What is Exfoliation?

Exfoliation is the technique of using a substance to gently scrub your skin in order to get smooth, clear skin. It is the removal of dead skin cells from the superficial layers of the skin. It can also help to brighten and enhance the appearance of your skin by removing dry or dull skin and improving blood circulation. Exfoliation can be done in two ways: chemically and physically. Chemical exfoliants employ alpha-hydroxy acids to exfoliate dead skin on a molecular level, whereas physical exfoliants physically wear away debris and dead cells.

10 DIY SCRUBS TO EXFOLIATE YOUR SKIN NATURALLY:

1. Sugar

Sugar contains glycolic acid, a natural chemical exfoliator that can assist in the separation of dead cells from new cells in the skin’s outermost layer. When gently applied, this can support the removal of dead skin in a safe and effective manner. Sugar scrubs are great exfoliants for those with dry skin.

Mix a half-cup sugar with enough olive or grape-seed oil to make a paste and apply it to the face in a circular motion. Let it sit for 10 minutes, then wash away with warm water.

2. Papaya

Papain, an enzyme found in papaya, is a potent exfoliant. Papain breaks down the keratin in dead skin cells, which helps to avoid blocked pores, infection, and improves skin suppleness. It promotes blood circulation and improves skin elasticity. It is found to be an ideal exfoliant for combination or oily skin because these skin types tend to overproduce sebum, resulting in clogged pores.

Make a smooth paste out of fresh papaya. Apply with your fingertips in a circular motion to your face and leave it for 15 minutes before rinsing with warm water.

3. Rice Flour

Rice flour is abrasive enough to exfoliate all of your dead skin cells. This scrub is ideal for people who have oily skin. The rice flour exfoliates the skin, while the honey hydrates it.

Combine a teaspoon of rice flour and half a teaspoon of honey in a small mixing bowl. Scrub your face for one minute with the mixture, then leave it on for two minutes before washing it off.

4. Coffee

Ground coffee acts as a great manual exfoliator, scrubbing away dead cells and dirt. Caffeine has also been proven to plump skin and reverses ageing symptoms like wrinkles and dark patches. So it’s good for dry skin.

To make a thick paste, combine a one-quarter teaspoon of used coffee grounds with one tablespoon of your favourite natural oil (adjust amounts as needed to achieve thick consistency). Apply on your face in a circular motion with your fingers. Allow for a five-minute rest period. Rinse well with water.

5. Oatmeal

Oatmeal is soft and non-irritating for most people and is known for its medicinal anti-inflammatory effects. Take one tablespoon finely ground oats and one tablespoon honey in a small mixing bowl. Apply on your face in a circular motion, leave it for 5-10 minutes and wash off with water.

For persons with dry or sensitive skin, oatmeal is an excellent ingredient in exfoliating scrubs. Make sure you’re using organic oats that have not been exposed to pesticides or chemicals.

6. Honey

Honey is not only good for your health, but it’s also good for your skin. It has antimicrobial and humectant qualities that help to promote healing and hydration. Honey scrub is ideal for oily skin.

Take a little amount of honey. Apply to your face in a circular motion to exfoliate and later rinse with sufficient water.

7. Turmeric

Turmeric is a capable exfoliator in addition to being a multipurpose spice. It is an excellent exfoliator for all skin types, but particularly sensitive skin.

To make a paste, combine one teaspoon of ground turmeric with yoghurt, natural oil, or water. Apply in a circular motion to your face and allow for a 10-minute rest period before washing with water.

8. LEMON

Along with the skin lightening or bleaching properties, lemon can also be used to exfoliate the skin. This can serve to be an ideal scrub when combined with sugar and honey which acts as a scrubbing and moisturising agent respectively.

Take a slice of freshly cut lemon. On it add some sugar and honey. Gently massage your face for a few minutes. Rest it for a minute or two. Rinse with cold water. If you feel it drying out, apply honey and rinse.

9. Pineapple

Pineapple is one of the fruits that have natural exfoliating properties. Take a few pineapple slices, crush them, and drain the juice. Apply to the face in a circular motion with an equal quantity of honey. It should be kept for 3 minutes before washing off.

10. Banana

Bananas are an excellent exfoliant, helping to remove excess sebum from the skin’s surface.

Mash the banana and then combine it with the oatmeal powder. Apply the paste and massage it in a circular motion. Allow it to dry completely before washing with water.

Exfoliation is an important part of the skincare routine. It helps in removing the dead skin and other impurities from the skin. This step also helps in better absorption of the actives from the other products and improves the skin texture. You should not exfoliate on a daily basis but make it a part of your regime a few times a week.
