7 Foods to Boost Immunity in Kids

The best gift you can ever give to your child is a healthy body and strong immunity to fight infections. Immunity plays a major role and it can be achieved by feeding some foods for immunity boost.

For the world, 2020 was all about immunity. We had never dreamt about going through such trying medical and emotional conditions. It taught us that in some situations science and medicine fail to help us as spontaneously as our own immunity can. Now the question arises: How to increase immunity in children?

How to boost immunity?

Immunity boosting is a comprehensive process which starts right from the early age. As babies grow and start preschool, they are more likely to be attacked by viruses and bacteria causing cold, cough and other infections. Building immunity becomes key at this early stage.

The food we eat plays a key role in determining the overall health and immunity. It gives the body a condition of being able to resist a particular disease.

Foods to boost immunity
Giloy:

It is a shrub and an essential herb in ayurvedic medicines. Giloy is used to treat a wide range of health conditions. It contains important plant compounds like terpenoids, alkaloids, lignans, and steroids. Research shows that these compounds have antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antidiabetic properties, among other benefits which help to boost immunity.

Tulsi:

Tulsi leaves have been scientifically proven to have medicinal properties. It also has antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal effects, rich in vitamin c and zinc and thus keeps the infection at a bay and naturally boosts the immunity.

Amla:

Amla is a storehouse of antioxidants. It is one of the richest sources of vitamin C, which is known to boost immunity. It has antibacterial and astringent properties that boosts immunity.

Ashwagandha:

As an anti-oxidant, boosting immunity is one of the most popular benefits of Ashwagandha for kids. The root activates and increases the levels of enzymes and macrophages, a type of white blood cell that kills bad viruses and bacterias. It also promotes the development of antibodies, which is a major factor in improving the body’s response to a health-threatening infection.

TURMERIC:

A compound found in turmeric, Curcumin, offers therapeutic relief and is a perfect immunity booster for kids. It has a a very high antioxidant value to protect body from invading infections. It is also rich in vitamin A, Thiamine (B1), Riboflavin (B2) and vitamin C.

Nuts:

The vitamin E found in nuts like almonds, cashews, peanuts and hazelnut help the immune system to fight against invading bacteria. They are a great source of antioxidants that keep the body healthy and disease free by neutralizing free radicals and reducing inflammation.

Seeds:

Seeds are an incredible source of nutrients. Sunflower seeds are rich in magnesium, vitamin E, antioxidants and good fats. Together they help to boost immunity. Pumpkin seeds are rich in Vitamin E which is necessary for immunity building and also packed with other bone-building nutrients like potassium, magnesium and vitamin K. Melon seeds are a good source of zinc. It helps to boost our immunity, helps in digestion, cell growth, and keeps your nervous system healthy.

Antioxidants:

Cocoa contains flavonoid, a naturally occurring compound found in plants which act as antioxidant and help in counteracting free radicals in the body. Also rich in zinc, iron, copper, and vitamins like A, B12 and K. Vitamin E is a potent antioxidant and has an ability to modulate host immune functions. Vitamin E is key for strong immunity and healthy skin and eyes. In recent years, vitamin E supplements have become popular as antioxidants.

Foods to avoid

Refined sugar: Sugar causes inflammation in the body which results in weaker immunity. Sugar damages the protein in our body, resulting in ageing of organs, which further compromises immunity, growth and functioning. Greatest source of sugar in the average kid’s diet are sugary snacks and beverages like cookies, cakes, candies, fruit juice, soda, and sports drinks. Everything that the child picks up to eat today has strains of added sugar in some form or the other.

Preservatives: most of the packaged food companies are adding artificial preservatives to delay spoilage and contamination in foods.  artificial preservatives such as nitrates, benzoates, sulfites, sorbates, parabens, formaldehyde, BHT, BHA and several others can cause serious health hazards such as hypersensitivity, allergy, asthma, hyperactivity, neurological damage.

Refined oil: The high temperature involved in the refining process removes all the natural and beneficial substances from the oil, which is not good for the digestive as well as respiratory health and ultimately affects your immunity.

Best food for Immunity Booster of Kids

As if the flu season was not enough to worry about, this coronavirus is threatening our heads. In the present scenario it has become important to take care of our health, as well as the health of our family members. We have to put extra efforts with children, as most of them are picky eaters and it is also difficult for them to follow health advisories that have been issued. So, it has become necessary to take care of their health and to feed them best food for immunity booster through a proper balanced diet.

To keep kids healthy, powerful antioxidants like Vitamin A, C, E are needed. Having nuts and seeds daily, eating immunity food for kids like green leafy vegetables, and staying hydrated are some of the preventive measures.

best FOOD FOR immunity booster
Vegetables:
  • Colorful veggies like carrots, tomatoes, beetroot, broccoli, peas have to be introduced to brighten up your child’s meal. These veggies are a great source of vitamin A, C, E, fiber and antioxidants (why are they important?) that help your child fight infections and are the best immunity food for kids.
Probiotics:
  • They are live bacteria that help in digestion and build immunity. Also called good bacteria, they help to keep the gut of a child healthy. Healthy digestive system is vital for childhood immunity and eventually complete body development. Kefir is one of the best food for immunity booster. It’s a healthy probiotic, similar to drinkable yogurt, that can boost the immune system of a child. Being rich in calcium also improves bone health (what does sugar do to our bones?).
Root vegetables:
  •  Turnips, potatoes, carrots, beetroots and sweet potatoes are some of their examples. Root vegetables absorb lots of nutrients from the soil like phosphorus, sulfur, magnesium (how does this mineral help with stress?), calcium along with being rich in fibre, vitamins, and antioxidants that together protect against diseases and illness and make them best immunity food for kids.
Honey:
  • Honey is the food to increase immunity in child naturally. It has been used as a medicine for thousands for years. Some studies support this claim that Manuka honey has antibacterial potential.  It is further researched that the concentration of honey and the bacteria it possesses ultimately impacts the anti-bacterial claim it can make. Nevertheless, frequent runny nose, cold, cough and wheezing can compromise the growth and learning of a child. 2 teaspoon of honey, therefore, may safely relieve coughing and make the child sleep calmly (what else helps in sleep?). Honey is also a good replacement to refined sugars for dessert or drinks.
Legume:
  • It is a type of dry fruit usually produced by plants. An important nutritional aspect of legume foods is that they are rich in protein, because plants are generally well nourished with nitrogen, which is essential for making protein in the body. Beans, peas and peanuts are legumes that we use commonly. Soybeans are exceptionally nutritious (like tofu, soy milk). Legumes contain antioxidants that help prevent damage of cells and fight illness. The fibre and other nutrients benefit the digestive system by supporting a stronger gut and hence proved to be an immunity food for kids. (what else helps in digestion?).
Fats:
  • They not only supply energy to kids, but also help other fat soluble nutrients like Vitamin A, D, E to do their job properly. They have antioxidant properties which help to fight infections and keep immunity high. For toddlers and young children, giving nut butter is also a source of good fats (Recipe: easy peanut butter balls)
Sprouts:
  • Some research indicates that sprouting increases the level of antioxidants and vitamin C in the legume. Consuming this boosts the immune system of the child. Once soaked, a seed gears up all the necessary superpowers (nutrients) to germinate and grow into a plant. Some studies suggest that sprouting also helps increase protein content of seeds which is also easily digestible. The nutrition in sprouts is also 30 times higher than the cooked food, which makes it an essential immunity food for kids. (How does soaking food help?)
Turmeric:
  • There is a enough scientific evidence that curcumin compound of turmeric aids in boosting immunity. They also prevents body from any pain, swelling, fever due to its anti-inflammatory property. Medicines derived from this plant have played an important role over years and the plant has been traditionally used for medical purposes over the last 4000 years for both preventing and healing purposes. As temperature changes from cold to warm, intake of turmeric can help keep the kids safe from common cold or flu. Mixing roasted powder with milk or honey to make a syrup can do the trick. Turmeric is one of the best food for immunity booster.
Vitamin D:
  • Every single cell in the body requires this Vitamin. There is tons of scientific research backing up that a deficiency in vitamin D increases chances of infections and it is an important ingredient in immunity food for kids. Our body can also produce this vitamin through exposure to sunlight (cholesterol produces vitamin D). However, deficiency of Vitamin D is extremely common in kids and results in weaker body, including reduced immunity. Food products including ghee, cheese, milk and yogurt are considered to be the most important sources for vegetarians. If the child is allergic to these, then food fortified with vitamin D e.g. cereals, milk etc should be preferred (Do healthy kids need supplements?)

How to Increase Immunity in Child?

For the world, 2020 was all about immunity. We had never dreamt about going through such trying medical and emotional conditions. It taught us that in some situations science and medicine also fail to help us as spontaneously as our own immunity can. now the question arises: how to increase immunity in child ?

From the past two decades, our lifestyle, especially food habits, has evolved. This change, not necessarily all good, has mainly affected kids as they are the ones latching on to the trend of packaged comfort foods . Have you ever thought about what you had snacked on as a kid? For most of us, the meals were simple, seasonal, locally procured veggies and fruits. The cart of street vendors could easily detail out the oncoming season.

At the beginning of autumn carts would be full of corn on the cob to strengthen our gut for seasonal changes and allergies. Once that would pass, the season of roasted peanuts, jaggery sweets, and oranges would come to build our immunity further to fight the winter flu. Our kids are deprived of the science of eating the naturally available superfoods in particular seasons or rather not eating them at all. They are forgotten and sadly forgone.

How to increase immunity in child

The food we eat plays a key role in determining the overall health and immunity. Replacing carbs-heavy comfort-food with a good balance of nuts, grains, veggies and fruits adds Vitamin A, C, D, E which are high antioxidants and prepare the body to fight . Food to Boost Immunity – Orange

Oranges is the food to boost immunity. They are not only nutritious and rich in Vitamin-C but also loved by kids. Just one orange can meet 100% vitamin C requirement for the kids daily nutrition. Kids should consume the whole fruit and not the juice. The pith (white after between peel and fruit) of orange has 30% fiber of the fruit and this particular fibre (called pectin) is good for kid’s gut which builds immunity and supports digestion.

Our body does not produce Vitamin C and hence it becomes necessary to consume it through food. Best is to offer food to boost immunity that kids will easily eat without any fuss. (More foods to boost immunity)

Orange:
  • Kids should consume sufficient amount of Vitamin C during growing years to support development of bones and teeth
  • Vitamin C helps heal the wound of a child whenever he/she falls
  • It also aids in developing communication system of the child- speaking, swallowing, walking, learning
  • Vitamin C keeps the immunity of the child high and safeguards from unwanted bugs and germs
  • Lastly, it also helps to absorb Iron. A child deficient in iron will have lower energy and be irritable.

Don’t worry if kids take more Vitamin C in a day than required. Vitamin C is water soluble. Whatever extra Vitamin-C is in the body will be released through urine.

8 best foods for toddler and kids that you should add to your Kids ‘everyday’ Food Basket

We all know the importance of a balanced diet, but what makes a diet a balanced diet? If the food you are feeding your baby is full of all the nutrients that a child needs, then the diet is a balanced diet.(what are the essential nutrients for kids). According to research, most of the kids are deficient in important nutrients because of their food choices. This is a direct outcome of increased intake of processed and refined foods such as chips, cookies, pizza, burger, fries and carbonated drinks (What are the effects of junk foods on kids?). These foods not only have zero nutritive value but also have an undesired impact on the health of the child. Here is the list of some best foods for toddler and kids that you must include in your kids daily diet.

Best foods for toddler and kids
One Apple:

An apple a day keeps the doctor away! It’s not just a saying, it really works. Apple is high in antioxidants and fiber which supports higher immunity and better digestion ( What are antioxidants?). Avoid peeling the skin, that’s 50% source of fruit fiber and loaded with powerful antioxidants called polyphenol. Your child needs 15-20g of fiber in a day. Imagine getting 5g fiber just from an apple with the skin on. To rinse of the alleged pesticides from the top layer of the apple, I soak it in water for 20 minutes and rub it clean. You can also add Apple cider vinegar to rinse the apple. Apple is one of the best foods for toddler and kids. ( Benefits of eating apple )

Whole grain:

Whole grains are nutritious foods for kids as they are powerhouse of energy and rich in carbohydrates, protein, iron, fiber, iodine, magnesium, zinc, folate, riboflavin and vitamin E. All these nutrients help in overall growth and development of kids.  Whole grains are a great way to start the day for a toddler or young child.  They are nutrient- dense, energy rich foods which make them ideal food for busy school going children. They help to maintain energy level and feeling of fullness for longer. Whole grain includes wheat, bulgur, oatmeal, quinoa, corn, barley and millet. As it contains dietary fibers, it also helps to maintain digestive health and contributes in preventing constipation. (Recipe of whole grain and millet pizza)

1 small bowl Sprouted moong daal:

This is the easiest form of sprouts which can get ready overnight. Sprouting makes our gut healthy and enables better absorption of vitamins and minerals by our body. Just with a small bowl your child gets 8g of fiber and 12 g of protein. With an apple and a bowl of sprouted dal you have covered nearly 100% fiber for your child and 50% protein. Purée sprouts to add to paratha dough or make Dosa or Cheela with it. (What are the health benefits of sprouting?)

20g Nuts:

They are a great source of good fat and many micronutrients which otherwise do not get covered in our daily home-cooked meals. 10-20g of nuts are sufficient for a child depending on their age/weight. If possible, add 1 brazilnut, which is a great source of selenium mineral which is not found easily in daily meals. Nuts are the best foods for toddler and kids. (How to get Selenium?)

150ml Yogurt or Kefir:

Yogurt is considered a carrier of both Probiotics and Prebiotics which keeps our gut healthy and immunity high that eventually results in less illness. It can be used plain or as a fruit smoothie. ( What are some foods supports healthy gut?)

1 slice Cheddar Cheese:

Cheese which is fermented and aged is a great source of good bacteria for the gut and also high in protein and calcium. I try to search for cheese which is at least 2 years aged.

2 tbsp Fresh or dried leaves:

Green leafy veggies are high in iron, calcium, potassium, and magnesium. Use any form of green leafy veggies, either dried or boiled and puréed, to add to your kids paratha dough. I know this can be tricky but anything can hide behind a paratha!

Half Carrot:

With the amount of screen time the kids enjoy these days, it becomes imperative for them to safeguard their eyes. Beta carotene in carrot converts into Vitamin A and keeps the eyes healthy. Carrot is also loaded with phytochemicals which are excellent antioxidants and helps to keep the immunity levels high. Just with half a carrot, your child can meet 100% of daily requirement of Vitamin A.

Dried Moringa Kefir Smoothie
Sprouted Chana with nuts and apple

If you have covered these 8 food items, you can rest assured that considerable amount of nutrition has been fed to your child.

I always keep grated carrot, sprouted beans, kefir, dried moringa (drustick) leaves handy to fold up in my kids’ paratha dough. Just by adding 10g of moringa leaves (dried) along with a slice of cheese and yogurt to their diet, your kids will meet 60% calcium requirement of the day.
