Hypotonia in Kids: Causes,Treatments and Foods that help

Hypotonia

Did you notice a delay in your child’s ability to sit up, walk, or eat themselves? Does your child lack the ability to control their neck muscles or lift their head? Does your baby have straight arms and legs that don’t bend at the elbow or knee? If yes, this could be the signs hypotonia which is characterised by low muscle tone. It frequently represents an indication of an underlying medical issue. Keep reading to learn more about the symptoms, causes, treatments for hypotonia and foods that help to manage hypotonia.

WHATSAPP for concerns like Speech Delay, Low Weight, Frequent Illness, Hyperactivity, Low Concentration, Weak Eyesight, Improper Sleep, Pigmentation, Pores, Face Marks, Fine Lines , Lactation etc.

Hypotonia

Hypotonia is characterised by poor muscle tone. It is also referred to as “floppy infant syndrome.” The condition can be identified by doctors during the first few minutes of life. Hypotonia can occasionally appear later, but it usually becomes apparent by 6 months of age. Muscle tone is your body’s reaction which enables you to maintain your posture when sitting and employ reflexes like moving your arms and legs. Muscle tone also contributes to the regulation of organ function in your body. If you don’t have enough muscular tone, your arms and legs will look floppy and weak. Your infant may struggle to sit up straight, hold their head up, and stretch their knees and elbows.

Symptoms of hypotonia

A rag doll-like appearance to a child’s physique is a symptom of hypotonia. Here are few typical signs of hypotonia:

  • Delay in developmental milestones like rolling over, sitting, crawling and walking
  • Having trouble speaking
  • Not able to regulate the neck muscle or lift the head
  • Has rigid limbs and legs that don’t bend at the elbow or knee
  • Trouble sucking or swallowing
  • Weak muscles
  • Unable to cry loudly

Causes of hypotonia

Hypotonia results from a malfunction in the signalling between the pathways that regulate movement. The brain, spinal cord, nerves, and muscles are all connected via these routes. Here are some major causes of hypotonia:

  • Genetic conditions: Down’s syndrome,Trisomy 13, Williams syndrome.
  • Premature birth
  • Conditions like cerebral palsy and muscular atrophy
  • Lack of oxygen during delivery
  • Severe injury in brain or spinal cord
  • Birth defects and brain abnormalities
  • Certain infections like meningitis, measles etc
  • Sleep apnea
  • Hypothyroidism

Treatments for hypotonia

It is a lifelong condition.  Sometimes, muscular tone becomes better with time but it’s not always curable. Here are some therapies that help to enhance their muscle tone and increase coordination skills:

1.OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY (OT)

This type of treatment helps children learn life skills such as eating and dressing themselves, bathing, and understanding how to interact with others. The skills they learn are helpful to them living as independently as possible.

3.SPEECH THERAPY

Speech therapy is a crucial therapeutic choice for ID patients since they struggle with social communication. It improves an individual’s communication abilities with a certified speech-language pathologist, enabling them to express their needs and wishes more clearly. When speech-language pathologists collaborate with teachers, support staff, families, and the child’s classmates to encourage functional communication in natural contexts, speech treatment for people with hypotonia is frequently most effective.

4.Sensory stimulation therapy

Sensory stimulation therapy is an experimental therapy for kids dealing with sensory processing issues or lack of senses. By offering sensory stimulation, it may be possible to activate the brain’s adaptability, excite the impaired neural networks, and prevent sensory loss. However, the effectiveness of such treatment is still being debated today. Now, music therapy has been suggested as a good approach to sensory stimulation programmes as another means to stimulate the senses.

Sensory Activities for Kids with ADHD and ASD

Sensory

Does your child have excessive energy or a complete absence of reaction? Do they get distracted frequently? Do you find it difficult to engage your children in any activities? Kids with ADHD have complicated sensory system. When this sensory system doesn’t function properly, they may act aggressively, become hyper and inattentive. Here are some sensory activities for kids at home that not only help them reduce hyperactivity but also improve their attention and stimulate their senses.

WHATSAPP to talk an expert!!

Types of sensory issues

Many autistic children have difficulties processing sensory information. Children who are either hyporesponsive or hyperresponsive may exhibit meltdowns, withdrawal, or other challenging behaviours. Desensitization tools can help these children deal with sensory inputs.

To feel satisfied, under-sensitive (Hyposensitivity) children seek out more sensations. This could mean they turn up the volume on the TV, jump on the bed, or spin the wheels of their toy car over and over. Sensory toys provide them with the sensations they seek in a fun and safe environment.

Over-sensitive (Hypersensitivity) children attempt to avoid overpowering sensations. This could mean they cover their ears when the vacuum cleaner is on, want clothing tags removed, or cry when placed on a swing. In these cases, sensory toys serve as an enjoyable introduction to unpleasant sensations for children, with the goal of making the sense more tolerable in the future.

Activities should constantly be customized to each child’s unique support strategies because children with autism exhibit a variety of different behaviours. It is advantageous in a number of ways to involve children with autism in sensory activities because it can help in:

  • Stimulating the brain, forming neural connections, and enhancing sensory processing mechanisms
  • Developing interpersonal abilities like cooperation and communication
  • Enhancing coordination and fine/gross motor skills
  • Calming down agitated children
  • Promote independent play or personalized learning, both of which can help children’s academic performance

If yes, then it is must to make the kiddo cope up with it through speech exercises. The inability to communicate also makes it difficult for the child to convey his thoughts or emotions. Thus speech disorders fall out as one of the most common disabilities among kids affecting over 10% of the children. In the long run, this can put limitations upon the kids abilities and also restrict them from being a part of several activities. Do you really want to see your child speech deprived? No, right! So, Let’s first look at why speech is important.

Feedbacks from parents

Importance of speech

Speech helps us in expressing ourselves. It effectively aids in building strong connections, reaching out to people and also influences our choices in life!

Inability to communicate properly can also create misunderstandings, social disapproval, unclarity, etc. Thus it becomes a must to gain firm grip upon one’s speech.

What can be some causes of speech disorders?

There can be different types of causes behind speech disorders.

Some of them include:

  • Autism
  • Attention deficit or hyperactivity disorder
  • Developmental or neurological disorder
  • Brain injury
  • Nervous system disorder
  • Hearing issues

If symptoms are left ignored, they could get worse and harm a child’s speech development. Communication difficulties can be effectively treated in order to reduce symptoms and significantly enhance behavioural and educational patterns. Speech exercises can tremendously help in bringing flexibility in tongue and clarity in communication!

Exercises for Speech Improvement

A child’s speech and language development can be aided by techniques and equipment used in structured speech therapy exercises. They are essential for enhancing a child’s speech, language, and communication abilities and, when given as a part of an entertaining activity, are enjoyable for young children while still being a very effective component of therapy.

Come on! Let’s get acquainted with some interesting exercises.

The following exercises can aid in your child’s oral motor muscle development. The exercises are made simpler if your youngster copies you while performing them. Be imaginative, energetic, and most importantly, have fun!

1. Tongue exercises

The main objective of tongue exercise is to strengthen the tongue muscle and increase oral coordination and stimulation.

Tongue Push-ups (Procedure)Tongue Pops  (Procedure)Back and Forth (Procedure)
Ask the child to hold the grape or berry on the upper ridge of their palate (not to touch the teeth) and roll the tongue upwards. Repeat it 3-4 times for few seconds. At last, berry is the reward!Suck tongue up on the top of the mouth. Pull it back and release it making a pop sound. Repeat it 3-4 times for few secondsSlide out your tongue and hold it for few seconds. Now the tongue inside the mouth. Make sure the tongue does not touch the teeth. Repeat it 3-4 times
2. Hop and talk

Although you already know that repetition is an effective strategy in speech and language therapy, it is not enjoyable to encourage children to repeat the same sound or word repeatedly. But it is possible with a little inventiveness on your part.

For eg: Make a trail with foamy pads on the way. Ask your little kiddo to jump from one pad to the next and repeat some sounds and words along with you. They won’t see this repetition exercise as anything other than pleasure because they’ll be too busy hopping!

3. One stanza of music each day

Music can indeed be a strong source to improve language skills. Every line full of meaning can help the child to develop verbally! So also it puts healthy force upon the vocal cords and helps out with speech.

For eg: Ask your child to learn one stanza of his favourite song supposedly “Saare jahan se accha Hindustan hamara”. Let him recite it once he is done learning the lyrics. The lyrics of music indeed can help the child in getting a firm grip on pronunciation, utterance and the  knowledge of words.

4. Picture decoding

This is one of the best ways to lighten up imagination centers in kids’ brains! Pictures indeed speak a lot and visual interpretation helps in understanding the things much better.

For eg: Place a cartoon scene of “Tom and jerry” in front of the child. Ask the child to speak a few sentences on each character that is the part of the scene. And then ask the child to narrate the scene or what is he actually able to understand from the picture displayed.

5. Bubbling

It’s exciting and entertaining to practise breath control with your kids by blowing bubbles. Because blowing forces kids to purse their lips, it’s also a great oral motor practice. Blowing exercises such as blowing bubbles position and strengthen the tongue for sounds produced in the back of the mouth. It also strengthens the abdominal muscles and helps in sustained speech thereby increasing the sentence length.

6. One new word each day

Learning one new word each day is a wonderful way of gradually expanding the vocabulary.

For eg: Give one word to the kid like “Sugar”. Ask the kid to use that word and make a sentence out of it followed by its pronunciation.

The sentence can be like this : I want some more sugar in milk.

In this way a kid will understand the basics behind sentence structure building and so also it will foster speech improvement.

7. Target reach

A fantastic technique to get your younger children talking is through toy cars. Make a road through the space using yarn or tape, and place many “stops” along the path that contain the desired word, sound, or statement. Encourage the kid to sound out the target word or sentence at each stop before continuing on to the finish line.

This will pour in a sense of awareness within the child and also enhance the speech due to pronunciation.

8. Play with consonant sounds

Consonant sounds make speech crisp, clear, and understandable, which makes it simpler for listeners to understand what is being said. Compared to vowels, consonants are simpler to learn. Each consonant sound can typically only be spoken in one way. You can also start clubbing vowels with the consonants to develop understanding for sounds.

For eg: R consonant clubbed with a,e,i,o,u will become “ra,re,ri,ro,ru”

Thus some of these exercises can effectively help in improving speech disorders.

Foods that can be helpful

Some of the foods that can help with the speech disorders include:

1. Nuts

All the nuts like almonds, walnuts, cashew, peanuts and hazelnuts are rich in vitamin E and help in boosting memory. They are also antioxidants which protect against cell damage. Growth Hormone Deficiency in Kids

Do you feel your tiny tot isn’t growing the way he should? Does he seem short with respect to his age? Then it can be the sign of growth hormone deficiency! Being a parent you would certainly wish for your child to grow healthy and possess good height. A lack of growth hormone can develop early in life or later in development. Approximately one in 4,000 to 10,000 kids suffers from a lack of growth hormone. Children who receive a diagnosis early frequently make a full recovery. If the illness is not treated, it may cause delayed puberty and shorter than average height.

Let’s try to get a deeper understanding of it.

WHATSAPP for concerns like Speech Delay, Low Weight, Frequent Illness, Hyperactivity, Low Concentration, Weak Eyesight, Improper Sleep, Pigmentation, Pores, Face Marks, Fine Lines , Lactation etc.

What’s Growth Hormone deficiency?

When the body does not produce enough growth hormone to support a child’s normal rate of growth, this condition is known as GH (Growth Hormone) deficiency.

One a simple note, its of two types:

  • Congenital Growth Hormone deficiency: Some newborns are born with this kind. They may also experience issues with different hormones. Some infants appear to be growing normally even though they were born with the disease until they were between 6 and 12 months old. There can be abnormal functioning of GH related genes.
  • Acquired Growth Hormone deficiency:  This happens when the body stops making enough GH to grow normally. It can begin at any point during the childhood and thus is called acquired GH deficiency.

Let us understand what might be the cause behind GH deficiency.

Causes

The causes again involve two types as specified earlier.

Congenital CausesAcquired Causes
1. Genetic abnormalities (GH gene malfunctioning)1.  Tumor’s , Infections, Injury to brain
2. Developmental defects2. Irradiation

Symptoms of GH Deficiency

Signs and symptoms of growth hormone deficiency include:

  • The face of a youngster could look younger than children of the same age
  • Delayed Puberty
  • Mild to Moderate chubbiness
  • Delayed Tooth development
  • Increased fat around the face and stomach
  • Low blood sugar levels
  • Muscle Weakness
  • Sluggish Hair growth

Can we do something about all this?

Continue reading to know about some remedies for it.

Remedies

The solutions to this include:

1. Growth hormone Therapy

The most typical treatment for  treating growth hormone deficiency in both children and adults include  growth hormone therapy injections of growth hormone into the body. Child will normally require daily growth hormone dosages after the doctor orders growth hormone therapy for him. However, the frequency of the growth hormone injections may vary depending on the severity of the disease.

Additionally along with this emotional therapy may be required.

2. Mental or Emotional Therapy

The GH deficiency can also significantly cast a negative impact upon the child’s mental health. For instance, being extremely short might lower a child’s self-esteem since classmates may ridicule them until they cry. Because of this, mental and emotional therapy is frequently a crucial component of treatment. You can talk about your emotions and learn coping mechanisms for growth hormone shortage from a mental health professional or psychologist.
