Suspected Causes for Autism: 10 foods that may help

Autism or Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder that affects communication and behavior. Although autism can be diagnosed at any age, it is said to be a “developmental disorder” because symptoms generally appear in the first two years of life. There are many causes for autism in kids and symptoms may vary from child to child. In some kids the symptoms are very mild while in certain cases severe symptoms are high.

Around 50% of the parents of children with autism notice signs by the time their child reaches 12 months and the remaining notice problems by 2 years. Children with ASD may have symptoms throughout their lives, but it’s possible for them to get better as they get older. Based on the most recent report, ASD is estimated to affect about 1 in 54 children, with boys being more likely to have ASD than girls.

Symptoms of autism spectrum disorder:

Kids with Autism have difficulty with social communication, interaction and behavior.  Here is the list of behaviors that are noticed in children diagnosed with Autism.  These Symptoms may vary from person to person.

1) Social communication and interaction

Children with autism find it difficult to interact with people. This is one of the most common symptoms of ASD. You might notice these signs by the age of 10 to 12 months. Other social skill symptoms may also include:

  • Give no response or little response when someone calls their name.
  • Less or no eye contact.
  • Don’t like cuddling or holding. They don’t stretch their arms to be picked up.
  • They prefer to be alone.
  • Difficulty in speaking or speech delay. (Tips to improve speech delay)
  • Their words generally don’t match with their facial expression and gestures.
  • Speak with unusual tones like robotic, flat or singsong voices.
  • Can’t start a conversation or be a part of one.
  • Often speak on their favorite subject without noticing that others are not interested or without giving others a chance to respond.
  • Doesn’t express their feelings and emotions.
2) Behavioral symptoms

Children with autism spectrum disorder may have repetitive patterns of behavior. Some of the common behavioral symptoms are as follows:

  • Repetitive behavior like repeating words or phrases, hand flapping or rocking.
  • Aggressive behavior. Perform activities that could cause self-harm.
  • Easily get upset with slight changes in a routine.
  • Lack of coordination and confidence.
  • Eat only specific foods or are generally fussy eaters.
  • Having overly focused interests, such as with moving objects or parts of objects
  • Over sensitivity to touch, light and sound.
  • Impulsiveness. Usually act without thinking.

Kids with ASD may also find it difficult to sleep. Despite so many challenges, they may have some strength, like they have an ability to learn things in detail and remember information for a long period of time. They are also strong visual and auditory learners.

Causes for autism:

However the exact causes for Autism is still unknown. There is no single cause, research shows that genes and environment can act together to affect the child’s development in the may that leads to ASD. Some most suspected causes or risk factors for  Autism include.

  • Having a sibling with ASD.  When one child is diagnosed with ASD, the next child to come along has about a 20% greater risk of developing autism than normal.
  • Research shows that older parents have a greater likelihood of having a child with autism.
  • Kids with certain genetic conditions such as Down syndrome, Fragile X syndrome and Rett syndrome are most likely to have ASD.
  • Exposure to heavy metals and environmental toxins.
  • Low birth weight.
  • Premature birth and maternal use of valproic acid or thalidomide during pregnancy can also be one of the causes for autism.
Diagnosis:

If you notice any of the above symptoms mentioned above , you must go for a proper diagnosis as recommended by the doctor. While there is no specific laboratory test to determine autism, a team of child psychologist, occupational therapists and speech pathologist do screening and evaluation which may include:

  • Medical exam like blood test, hearing test
  • Gathering information about the symptoms that exist, and from when these symptoms started.
  • Whether these symptoms are affecting their day to day life, or they find it difficult to socialize.
  • Family history of ASD.
  • May also involve interviews or questionnaires for family members, teachers and others close to the child to know the causes for autism
Treatment and therapies:

While there is no cure for ASD, currently available treatments can help reduce symptoms and improve functioning. Treatments include medication, psychotherapy, education or training, or a combination of treatments.

  • A doctor may use medication to treat some symptoms like irritability, aggression, repetitive behavior, hyperactivity, anxiety and attention problems.
  • Behavioral, psychological, educational, or skill-building therapy to build self confidence.
  • Speech-language pathologists are therapists who specialize in treating language problems and speech disorders. They are a key part of the autism treatment team.
  • Find an autism support group. Sharing information and experiences can help children with ASD and/or their caregivers learn about treatment options and ASD-related programs.
Healthy ASD diet for kids:

It is very important to feed kids a nutritious diet from the early years itself, even more important if the child is suffering from ASD. Along with the treatment and therapies a healthy ASD diet for kids including essential nutrients is must, which may help in reducing the symptoms. Experts say whatever is good for the brain is likely to be good for ASD and speech delay. Below is the list of essential nutrients and foods recommended as a part of a healthy ASD diet?

Protein:

Protein is an important part of a healthy diet. It builds, maintains and repairs body tissues. It is also essential for brain health and plays an important role in producing neurotransmitters (brain chemical). It’s also integral in forming enzymes and hormones in the body. From digestion to immunity, from hair to nails, everything requires protein. Some foods rich in protein are: nuts and seeds, egg and dairy products.(how to get a protein rich diet?)

Omega 3 fatty acids:

Research has established a link between omega 3 fatty acids and brain development in early childhood. These healthy fats have amazing brain boosting power and play a vital role in enhancing memory and attention span. Fish & walnuts are a very good source of omega 3. (Why is Omega 3 important for your kids?)

Magnesium:

In our body, Magnesium is responsible for nerve transmission and nerve-muscle coordination. In other words, it protects against the excessive excitement in a child (which can be traumatic). There is enough research going on how Magnesium can help in fixing or preventing neurological disorders. Banana, avocado, pumpkin seeds and spinach are some food sources of magnesium.(what are some disorders in which magnesium can help?)

Zinc:

Zinc is considered an essential nutrient which means that the body cannot produce or store it. For this reason, it is very important to add zinc in your daily diet. Zinc is required for proper brain function and development, immune function, protein synthesis, wound healing. Some food sources rich in zinc are: nuts, pumpkin seeds, spinach, chicken, shrimp and kidney beans. (How can zinc help with hair and skin health?)

NUTS:

All the nuts like almonds, walnuts, cashew, peanuts and hazelnuts are rich in vitamin E and help in boosting memory. They are also antioxidants which protect against cell damage. Walnuts are rich in omega 3 fatty acids and are a valuable substance for brain function, memory and thinking abilities. This fatty acid also encourages cognitive functions. ( best nuts for protein)

Seeds:

Apart from nuts, seeds like flex, chia, melon, sesame and pumpkins also contain powerful antioxidants like vitamin E that protect the brain from free radical damage. Sunflower seeds impact overall mood and mental processing powers and therefore it is considered a brain boosting snack. Pumpkin seeds are high in magnesium, copper, and much higher in zinc than other seeds, which help in increasing concentration and memory. One of the easiest to feed brain boosting foods for kids.

COCOA POWDER:

Pure cocoa powder (unsweetened) contains brain boosting components as it is packed with a large number of antioxidants molecules, the main is epicatechin helpful to improve cognition in studies. Hence cocoa powder is also an important brain development food for children. (More benefits of cocoa powder)

Ashwagandha:

Ashwagandha is an adaptogen. It is known to reduce anxiety and stress. Moreover, it increases acetylcholine levels which support better memory, mental focus and intelligence. Ashwagandha also improves communication between nerve cells and stimulates the body’s capacity to heal any nervous system damage.

Brahmi:

Brahmi is a superfood for the brain and is believed to sharpen the brain by protecting cells and increasing chemicals associated with learning and memory. It has shown to improve spatial learning and retaining power in kids. That is why in older times, kids were often given Brahmi powder with ghee/honey. This would increase their focus and attention, while keeping them calm and distressed.

Shankhapushpi:

Shankhapushpi is a traditional remedy for increasing the functioning of the brain. The powerful antioxidants and flavonoids present in it improve the memory capacity, focus, concentration, calmness, alertness of an individual. Since it is a brain tonic and stimulator, people taking shankhapushpi have improved memory, reasoning, problem-solving, and other cognitive abilities.

Foods to avoid

Refined sugar: Excessive sugar impairs cognitive skills as well as self control. Moreover, sugar damages the protein in our body, resulting in ageing of organs, which further compromises immunity, growth and functioning. Greatest source of sugar in the average kid’s diet are sugary snacks and beverages like cookies, cakes, candies, fruit juice, soda, and sports drinks. Everything that the child picks up to eat today has strains of added sugar in some form or the other.

Preservatives: Most of the packaged food companies are adding artificial preservatives to delay spoilage and contamination in foods.  Artificial preservatives such as nitrates, benzoates, sulfites, sorbates, parabens, formaldehyde, BHT, BHA and several others can cause serious health hazards such as hypersensitivity, allergy, asthma, hyperactivity, neurological damage.

Refined oil: The high temperature involved in the refining process removes all the natural and beneficial substances from the oil, which is not good for the digestive as well as respiratory health and ultimately affects your immunity.

How to feed all these foods to kids?

Now the question arises- how to include all these bitter Ayurvedic herbs, nuts, seeds and antioxidants in your child’s diet?

Is fast food ok for kids?

Over the last two decades, so many fast food restaurant chains have emerged and are on a constant rise. Whether we are travelling, have guests, short on time, hanging around with friends or simply want to relax, pizza, burger and fries are an instant choice, both affordable and comfortable for parents and children. In reality, food with high sugar/ saturated fat/ salt (what does sugar do to kids?) and low nutrient value in terms of protein, fibre, vitamin and mineral is termed as Fast Food. Food that can be served ready-to-eat and fast. Many of our children are fond of such ready-made food. But these foods have a negative impact on kid’s health in the long run and some of the concerning outcomes are obesity, stress, hormonal imbalance in kids. A single fast food meal could add 300-500 calories instantly without much added nutrition, terming it as empty calories (Why should kids eat a balanced diet?).

Kids love to enjoy meals with high sugar content. Sugar can be consumed in many forms like Bread which is extremely high in added sugar and one of the most staple foods in every household for kids. Other common sources of sugar are white sugar, brown sugar, cane sugar, cookies, candy, donut, cake, canned drinks, packed juices, bottled shakes and smoothies, granola bars, sauces, jams and many others. Such intake on a regular basis can deplete four of the best bone-friendly nutrients from your child’s body.

During the early years, the bones of kids develop and grow while also being depleted at the same time. If the consumption of calcium, Vitamin D and other required minerals are sufficient, the health of bones will be positive. If the consumption of required vitamins and minerals are less, the depletion of bones will soon take over resulting in much weaker bones and easy fractures. When sugar is consumed, there is acid that’s released in the body. In order to balance this acid, calcium is extracted from the bones resulting in Calcium deficient weaker bones. Vitamin D assists in absorption of Calcium by the bones. Consumption of sugar increases an enzyme that degrades vitamin D and thereby also results in reduced absorption of calcium by the bones. Double whammy!

Vitamin C helps to make collagen and also delays the decaying process of bones. Sugar intake restricts the absorption of this vitamin into our body cells resulting in weaker bones.

Magnesium works on keeping the bones strong. Sugar strips the body of magnesium too by releasing it out through urine.

BEST SNACKS FOR CHILDREN:

Many packaged snacks for kids are extremely unhealthy. They are often full of refined flour, added sugars, and artificial ingredients like colours and flavours. Snacks can act as a great opportunity to sneak some extra nutrients into your child’s diet. Instead of highly processed fast foods, fill your child’s tummy with healthy whole food snacks that will provide energy and complete nutrition.

  • You may consider popcorn as junk food, but it’s really a nutritious whole grain healthy fast food for kids. As long as you don’t drown it in unhealthy fat like margarine, popcorn can be a snack for kids. It is also loved by them. Popcorn actually has 4 grams of fibre per 3-cup serving, which makes it a filling snack and good for digestion.

Amongst many minerals and vitamins that contribute towards Brain Health– Development and Function, a few are Manganese, Vitamin B6 and B9. Just a cup of Makhana is enough to meet 50% of Manganese requirements for the day.

It is those rare snacks which are loaded with a good balance of Vitamin Bs. Not just Brain, Makhana also supports strong bone development of a growing child.

  • You can make them healthy fast food for kids, when you use the right ingredients. Healthy cookies contain whole grain flour, which provide protein, vitamins, minerals, and fibre. It can be a favourite treat for kids and adults as well. Adding ground seeds like flax, chia or sunflower seeds to the cookie mix make them more nutritious. By swapping out the added sugar and using other alternatives like puree of dates or raisins or dried berries can make the cookie a healthier choice. (Recipe of cookies)
  • Bread is a staple food in many households. Healthy spreads for bread can be a good way to feed essential nutrition to children. It can not only calm down a kid’s hunger pangs but also give a dose of good fat, protein and vitamins. Peanut butter mixed with cocoa and dates or honey is a bread spread which is loved by adults and kids alike. It is enough to provide with essential nutrients as well as antioxidants. (see Iyurved’s 5 Herbs and 7 Nuts spread)
  • Mixed nut balls or laddoo are the best snacks for children to settle their sweet cravings. Peanut butter (or any other nut butter) mixed with almond flour, dipped in melted dark chocolate is just the perfect snack for anytime during the day. Consuming Nuts and seeds is among the best food with protein to meet the daily requirement of the body and also among the best foods for children in their developing years. (Recipe of nut balls)
Laddoo/ Sweet ball using Iyurved’s 5 herbs and 7 nuts spread
  • Smoothies are a great way to pack fibre and vitamin rich fruits and vegetables, calcium, protein and good fats into a drinkable meal or snack. They are really easy and fast to make at home, and you can create lots of flavour combinations using what you have. An addition of kefir instead of yogurt adds the necessary bacterias to the drink. (Recipe of kefir shake)
  • Cake or cupcake is undoubtedly a favourite and healthy fast food for kids. Using whole wheat flour and mixing with seeds of Sunflower, Pumpkin and Melon together offer a great source of nourishment to the body. 1 tablespoon of this seed mix provides 5g of protein. A spread of this can easily blend with any dish and won’t even get noticed by kids.(Recipe of cupcakes)

What is with Saturated fat nuts ghee

Do you know that from the moment we are born, we begin to latch (pun intended) onto Saturated fat? Breast milk is a high source of saturated fat, formed naturally and is unprocessed. Now… if saturated fat is so bad, then why does the world go ga-ga over feeding only breast milk to a new born for as long as possible?

Olive! Another high source of saturated fat, key part of traditional diet of Middle Easterners, naturally occurring and unprocessed.

Coconut, high source of saturated fat, naturally occurring and unprocessed, loved by most of the Asians since forever.

The list is not long but it is intriguing. Nuts, Avocado and Ghee are few more examples.

  • On a very high level- there are two kinds of cholesterol- LDL (bad) and HDL (good). Saturated fat from the natural food sources actually increases both LDL and HDL. However, within LDL, there are two types as well- Type A and Type B. With the consumption of saturated fat from natural food sources, studies reveal that only type A LDL increases which doesn’t impact the heart. It is type B of LDL that impacts the heart, and that’s sourced primarily from refined carbohydrates (processed/comfort foods). Hence, it is advised to eat whole grains where the ratio of fibre to carbs is higher.

Our body needs saturated fat from natural sources. They help to fix hormones that can otherwise cause the body to go haywire impacting weight, mood, acne, bloating, PCOS, thyroid, sleep and the list goes on. Our brain, that is just 2% of our body mass but consumes 25% energy of the body, needs fat to perform efficiently for life. Saturated fat also stays inside the body cells to build a defence system and attack viruses and bacterias.

If you look around to find a food which has both high level of carbohydrates and saturated fat existing together, you might not be able to. Do you know that nature has not designed any food where saturated fat and carbs are combined? Generally speaking, fruits and veggies are mostly carbs or fibre. If you pick up any grain, then they are mostly protein or carbs. Can you think of any example with both saturated fat and carbs?

The most commonly loved and preferred food, nowadays, are fries, burger, chips, doughnuts etc. They are excellent examples of processed foods where both saturated fat and carbs are combined. They don’t occur naturally around us like a fruit or vegetable or whole grains. These are processed foods and hence can be harmful for the body. Interestingly, a study revealed that this kind of a processed food combination confuses and falsely tricks the brain into valuing this meal higher in nutrition (fat and carbs), releasing higher amount of dopamine (a feeling of reward) and ultimately resulting in more craving for the same.

So you can safely go back to those nuts, avocado, coconut and other naturally occurring saturated fats which haven’t been processed and combined with carbs. And keep a distance from saturated fats which are manufactured and combined with carbs in the form of fast-foods.

Impact of Sleep Disorder on Kid’s Brain Development

Sleep is an essential part of everyone’s routine. Studies have shown that kids who regularly get adequate amounts of sleep have improved attention, behaviour, learning, memory and most importantly, mental and physical health. Sleep disorder leaves negative impact of brain development. Most of a baby’s brain development happens during night sleep. This is the time when the connections between the left and right hemispheres of their brains are being formed. Brain synapses (a junction between two nerve cells) are formed during night sleeping. Infant sleep development is a highly dynamic process occurring in parallel to and in interaction with cognitive and physical growth. In the womb babies spend about 95% of their time asleep. Your baby’s brain has been developing since they were in your womb.

Brain development in babies

In the first trimester, nerve connections are built that enable your baby to move around in the womb, while in the second trimester, more nerve connections and brain tissues are formed. In the third trimester, the cerebral cortex (the largest part of the brain responsible for thought, memory, language and awareness) starts to take over from the brain stem to prepare your baby for future learning. The first five years of a baby’s life are exceptionally important for the development of the brain. This early brain development is essentially the building blocks for your baby’s future learning, health and behaviour. The child learns to crawl, eat, sleep, walk, and talk.

Just like you have to recharge your body and brain after a long day, it’s the same for the baby too. All that important stuff and learning going on into their tiny head. They need to recharge more frequently than adults. Baby’s brain stores everything they learn on that day during night sleeping.

Signs of Sleep disorder in Children:

You should watch for different symptoms and signs of sleep disorder to check if he/she is suffering from any sleep problem. Snoring, getting up often in the night, sleep walking, not able to sleep, pauses in breathing during sleep, having nightmares, difficulty staying awake during the day are some sleep disorder. They effect negatively on their performance in sports and academics are the signs of lack of sleep in children. Your kid might also complain of a headache from lack of sleep and if you observe any of these signs, you might want to see a pediatrician.

Kids who sleep less can suffer from:

  • Crankiness or irritation
  • Mood swings
  • Lack of interest, alertness and motivation
  • Academic struggles
  • Trouble in concentrating
  • Headache from lack of sleep (Yes! this happens in kids too)

There are four vitamins and minerals that are found in food that cure sleep disorder. Magnesium, Calcium, Vitamin B6 and Tryptophan. Tryptophan is an amino acid that is important for production of serotonin (happy hormone) in the body.

Foods to cure sleep disorder:

Eggs

Eggs are loaded with high quality protein. It also contain important nutrients like folate, Vitamin A, D, E, choline (excellent for brain development also), iron and calcium. Egg whites help the body prepare for bedtime by producing melatonin that bring on that sleepy feeling. Eggs are also a rich source in the amino acid tryptophan, which helps you sleep better or longer by telling your brain to shut down for the night.

Dairy products

Milk before bed time is certainly a good idea, but apart from milk other dairy products like cottage cheese/ paneer and cheese (especially cheddar cheese) are also packed with tryptophan. Cheddar cheese can have up to 60% more tryptophan than turkey. (What kind of cheese should you buy?)

Chickpeas (chola)

Chickpea curry or hummus is high in the amino acid tryptophan, the chemical that can help you fall asleep easily. The versatile beans are also high in folate, which helps regulate sleeping, and vitamin B6 which helps regulate your internal clock of sleep and rise. (Recipe for more nutritious spreads for bread, paratha)

nuts

Nuts like almonds, walnuts, pistachios and cashews are often considered to be a good food source for sleep. They contain melatonin (sleep hormone) as well as magnesium, vitamin B6, protein and zinc. Magnesium is helpful in promoting sleep because of its ability to reduce inflammation (body heat). The level of stress hormone cortisol, which is known to interrupt sleep can be reduced by including nuts in diet. (What nuts are easy protein sources?)

Coconut water

This might be surprising for you, but apart from iron, chloride, potassium, sodium, phosphorus and calcium, coconut water has ingredients that can help you sleep better. Magnesium and potassium also helps to relax muscles. This drink is also full of vitamin B, helping to reduce stress level, therefore results in sound sleep. A glass of coconut water as an evening beverage can help in quality sleep. (Recipe of a healthy coconut meal?)

Dates

Dates are a superfood. They contain most of the vitamins and minerals. They are also high in fiber and antioxidants. (what are they?). Magnesium present in dates is a calming mineral and helps to improve stress, sleep, muscle soreness, pain and inflammation. Your kid’s sweet craving can be fulfilled by dates. It contains two key nutrients that play a role in sound sleep- vitaminB6 and potassium. (Recipe of chocolate using dates)

Pumpkin seeds

A study published in 2005 in Nutritional neuroscience suggested that consuming tryptophan alongside a carbohydrates source is one of the best ways to treat sleep deprivation. Pumpkin seeds may be small but they are packed with valuable nutrients. They are rich in healthy fats, magnesium, fiber, antioxidants and zinc. If your kid has trouble sleeping, give few pumpkin seeds before bed with small amounts of carbohydrates such as a piece of fruit. It may be beneficial in providing the body with tryptophan needed for melatonin production, which can lead to better sleep. For younger kids, powdered pumpkin seeds can be an option.
