Oral Health of Kids: Tooth Decay Remedies at Home

Teeth are one of the most vital parts of our body. They help us to bite and chew food. Healthy and beautiful teeth give us a bright and beautiful smile. It is important to take care of them from childhood. It is the time when kids are filled with adventure, exploration and growth. Little bit of ignorance and carelessness can create a life long suffering. Playing or climbing here and there can end up with a broken tooth. Slow formation of plaque can result in a cavity. One of the most concerning issues in toddlers and kids are dental cavities. Tooth decay is most common among children. Some tooth decay remedies at home can provide quick relief but, your little bit of attention to the developing symptoms can save your child from unwanted pain and trouble.

Common Dental Issues in Kids
Tooth decay

Children are not proficient at brushing and flossing teeth without supervision. You should help them in holding and brushing teeth until they firmly learn to grasp the tooth brush. To make it a regular practice you have to tell them in the initial stage to brush teeth twice a day. Generally kids love a sugar loaded diet. It forms a layer of plaque over teeth that eats away the enamel which is the main cause of tooth decay. Making your kids brush their teeth properly can help in removing plaque, bacteria and food particles from their teeth and thus prevent early tooth decay. (Why brushing teeth should be part of night time routine?)

Tooth sensitivity

Tooth sensitivity is another major dental issue that kids may face. Many factors can be responsible for sensitivity. It can be uncomfortable and distracting for your child. It is important to take your child for dental check-up at least twice in a year to diagnose the underlying causes. Some factors that can cause tooth sensitivity are:

  • Cavities
  • Newly erupting permanent teeth
  • Teeth grinding
  • Plaque formation
  • Cracked filling
Dental emergencies

Dental emergencies are something that can happen anytime. While participating in sports activities, during rough fights with siblings, falling while learning riding cycle or bike or any other unexpected accidents can be a reason for dental emergencies. All these can result in cracking, breaking or teeth chipping. In worst scenarios teeth can be knocked out permanently. Mouth guard is a good option to prevent sports related tooth injuries. Parents have to keep an eye on their children while they are playing to avoid such injuries.

Gingivitis and Gum Diseases

Generally people think that gum diseases only occur in adults. But, it is quite common in kids also. Gingivitis is a precursor of gum disease. Red swollen gums, little bit bleeding while brushing or flossing are some of the symptoms of gum diseases. It is mostly common in children with poor oral hygiene. It can be avoided by taking proper care and brushing and flossing daily.

Bad breath

The bacteria in our mouth feeds on leftover food, fluid and plaque and produces hydrogen sulfide, which leads to a bad smell in the mouth. In children, it is most common in the morning when they wake up. Brushing your teeth before going to bed at night can prevent this problem to a large extent. Other than that, cleaning your tongue and using an antibacterial mouthwash can also help.

Excessive thumb sucking

We have often seen infants, toddlers and kids sucking their thumbs or pacifiers. They use it as a means to soothe irritations and anxiety. It’s not a problem until it becomes a habit. Prolonged thumb sucking can affect the development of teeth in kids or can create problems with teeth alignment. It can cause open bite. The upper and lower front teeth don’t meet due to the thumb thus do not fit together properly. Another problem that can be caused due to thumb sucking is that upper incisor teeth may be tipped forward. This may make it difficult for your child to bite or chew or even can affect the kid’s speech. Parents should break this habit after the baby crosses the infant stage.

How to clean baby’s gums:

Babies don’t have teeth as they are born. So there is no need to use a toothbrush or toothpaste for cleaning mouth. But, you can brush their gums to establish the habit of oral hygiene. Take a clean damp cloth, fix it in your index finger and run it slowly and smoothly over the baby’s gums and tongue. Just doing this twice a day would be enough. There is no need to use any product in their mouth. As the baby starts teething, initially you can use only water to clean their mouth. As they get several teeth, this is the time when you can put a tiny amount of fluoride free toothpaste on a toothbrush with soft bristles and teach them how to hold and brush their teeth.

Foods to strengthen kid’s teeth
Vitamin C

There are many things your kids eat during the day. They can develop different kinds of bacteria in the kid’s mouth which can cause gingivitis first stage gum disease. Vitamin C rich foods such as oranges, kiwis, papayas, limes, tomatoes and sweet potatoes can help to kill these bacteria. It also promotes a healthy supply of collagen in gums. (Role of vitamin C in building immunity)

Calcium

Calcium is one of the most important nutrients for healthy teeth. It strengthens the hard outer shell of the tooth called enamel, which is the defense against erosion and cavities. Calcium rich food like milk, cheese, broccoli and other milk products are the best food sources for kid’s healthy teeth development. (What are calcium rich foods?)

Chewable vegetables

Cucumbers, green beans, peas, raw carrots are some foods which can mechanically cleans teeth by just chewing them. Chewing these foods can vanish the layer of plaque naturally. Encourage your kids to chew these foods slowly to get their teeth clean. (Recipe of carrot beetroot pasta sauce)

Egg yolk

Eggs are one of the highest natural sources of vitamin D. Just one whole large egg provides 50% of vitamin D required for the day. It helps to maintain strong bones and teeth. Those who can may opt for fish (salmon, sardines) also as a source of vitamin D. (Vitamin D rich foods for building strong bones)

Moringa

Moringa is a superfood. It has 3 times more calcium than milk which makes it an excellent food to treat weak or damaged bones and also one of the best non-dairy sources of calcium. Some studies also indicate that moringa can heal damaged bones thus making it a must have calcium rich foods for bones and teeth. Dried moringa leaf powder has 17 times more vitamin D than fortified milk. In addition to this, it’s a fix for digestion troubles, immunity and iron. (Science based health benefits of moringa)

Tooth Decay Remedies At Home
Warm Salt Water

It is considered as one of the effective first line tooth decay remedies at home for toothache. As a natural disinfectant salt water helps to release food particles by loosening, that may be stuck in between teeth. It also heals internal wounds and reduces inflammation. You can take warm water and mix ½ teaspoon of salt in it. Use it as a mouthwash thrice a day.

Clove

It has been used from ages to treat toothaches. Clove contains a natural antiseptic Eugenol. Clove oil numbs the pain effectively and reduces inflammation. Dab a small amount of cotton in clove oil and fix it in a cavity hole or apply on the affected area. You can also make a mouthwash by adding a drop of this oil into a glass of water. It is one of the best tooth decay remedies at home for toothache.

Guava Leaves

Guava leaves have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties that heals wounds and can help in oral care. You can chew fresh guava leaves or boil them to make a mouthwash.

Garlic

Garlic has been known for its medicinal properties from past thousands of years. It can be used as pain reliever in toothache. It can kill plaque forming bacteria and protect teeth from cavities. You can make paste and apply it on the affected area to get relief. It is also considered as one of the effective tooth decay remedies at home which can provide relief from toothache instantly.

Asafetida

Asafetida and lemon juice is one of the common home remedies for toothache. Mix asafetida with warm lemon juice and apply on the affected tooth. Use this after every 30 minutes until the pain subsides.

Peppermint

It is a widely used herb for dental health as it acts as a breath freshener and teeth whitener. Recent scientific studies have found that peppermint fights bacteria inside your mouth which causes gum disease. Peppermint oil is an effective way to reduce plaque (a combination of bacteria, food particles, saliva and acid that sticks to the teeth). Rinsing with diluted peppermint oil can prevent bad breath and toothache also. (What are some ayurvedic herbs to build immunity?)

Neem

Traditionally neem sticks were used as toothbrushes. It has a high place in the traditional medicine world. Due to its antibacterial properties, neem is considered to treat bacteria and heal. It is quite useful in dentistry for curing gingival (tissues which provide a seal around teeth) problems and maintaining oral health in a natural way. Neem is an additive in some branded toothpastes nowadays. Neem oil has antibacterial and antifungal properties that can prevent gum inflammation and toothache. It is one of the known tooth decay remedies since ages.

Tips and Foods to Increase height of Your Child

Every parent wants their kids to be taller than them. Children grow at their own pace and the rate of their growth is also different, some kids gain height in early years while others in their late teenage years. But generally both girls and boys are likely to gain 2 inches in height every year. but there are certain tips and foods to increase height of the kids. The height of the kids depends upon many factors as listed below:

Factors that influence kid’s height

Genetics: Genetics play an important role in determining a kid’s height. They got their physical characteristics from their parents, all aspects of their personality such as , height, weight, body structure, skin , hair and eye color, all influenced by their parents genes. Usually taller parents have taller kids and vice versa.

Nutrition: After genetics nutrients is the main factor on which the height of the kids depends, as everything the body needs comes from the food we eat. Malnutrition can lead to many deficiency diseases that can adversely affect the child’s growth and development. (How to keep track of daily kids nutrition?)

Exercise and outdoor activities: Outdoor activities and regular exercise helps kids to grow well and reach their developmental milestones on time. If they regularly play outdoors or do some exercise daily, it will help keep them healthy by strengthening their immune system. (How to control the weight of the child?)

Hormones: Growth hormones play an important role in a child’s physical growth. These are made in pituitary gland and are crucial hormones for growth. If the production is low due to any health condition it will adversely affect the children’s height. (Foods that are good to balance the hormones?)

Sex: boys and girls grow in different rates. Males tend to be taller than females. Even males continue growing for longer than females.

This is a reference Height and Weight Chart for Indian Boys and Girls upto 5 years of age.

Indian Boys Growth Chart

*Weight in Kg and Height in cm.

Indian Girls Growth Chart

*Weight in Kg and Height in cm

Tips on how to increases height of kids
Balanced diet:

You are what you eat, your personality is the mirror of your diet. The foods that kids consume have to be healthy so that they grow up to be tall. A balanced diet is one which includes protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals in correct proportions. Minerals like calcium and potassium are key nutrients for bone development and should be present in the foods to increase height. Also keep a check on the consumption of processed foods as it adversely affects the kid’s growth. (Nutrition tips for toddlers?)

Exercise and yoga:

Outdoor play and exercise must be part of a kid’s lifestyle. There are some exercises which help in gaining height like stretching, as it helps elongate the spine and also improves the posture of the child at all times. Hanging from the bar also helps the spine elongate, which is important to be taller. The next exercise for gaining height is skipping, in which the body stretches entirely and promotes the overall growth in the kids. Swimming is another sport or exercise which keeps your child active and energetic, it’s a full body exercise which involves lots of stretching which helps kids to grow taller. Apart from these exercises you can also motivate your child to do some yoga poses, which is an age-old practice and helps children to make them taller. Some of the asanas are surya namaskar and chakrasana, which are proven to have positive effects on a kid’s height. (What kind of supplements should healthy kids eat?)

Good sleep:

Sleep is the golden chain that ties your health and body together. Proper sleep is one of the most important factors in your kids overall development and an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. Sleeping releases a growth hormone called HGH, which plays an important role in increasing height. The effects of sleep deprivation (insufficient sleep) can lead to many developmental issues. (How is sleep linked to brain development and what foods help in better sleep?)

Sunlight:

Sunlight is the great source of vitamin D, which helps in muscle and bone growth and development that is crucial for a kid’s height. Vitamin D also helps your body to absorb calcium from the foods and aids in strengthening the bones. So always encourage our child for outdoor activities, so that they get a daily dose of vitamin D through the sun. (What foods are a good source of calcium and vitamin-D?)

Posture:

Posture of your child has a great impact on their height, as slumping can put unnecessary pressure on the spine. A good posture not only elevates stress and pain in neck and back but it can change your physical height also. Always interrupt your child to sit and walk straight when you see them slouching.

Kids are growing fast and gaining height so their Calcium needs are also high. One of the most important minerals in our body is CALCIUM. Bones are 70% calcium and it is only calcium which gives bones their hardness for protection and support. Vitamin D helps the body to absorb calcium and works with it to build strong bones and increase height. It moves calcium from the intestine to the bloodstream and into the bones. From age 9 – 18 children need more calcium to meet the daily recommended intake. Interestingly, it is only till mid-20s that kids can improve their bones and increase height, which will last them a lifetime

Foods to increase height :
Cow’s milk and its products:

It is the most commonly consumed type of milk and naturally a good source of many nutrients like calcium, protein, phosphorus and Vitamin B2 and is one of the best foods to increase height. In several countries, it is fortified with vitamin D because milk doesn’t naturally contain vitamin D, but is one of the most widely used calcium rich foods for kids. These two work together to keep the bones strong. There are some dairy products made of cow’s milk like cheese, yogurt which are a good source of vitamin D. All of these play a role in increasing the height of kids.

Egg yolk:

Eggs are one of the highest natural sources of vitamin D. Just one whole large egg provides 50% of vitamin D required for the day. It helps to maintain strong bones and teeth. Those who can may opt for fish (salmon, sardines) also as a source of vitamin D. Egg is the food if you are looking for height gainer foods.

Moringa:

Moringa is a superfood. It has 3 times more calcium than milk which makes it one of the best foods to increase height to treat weak or damaged bones and also one of the best non-dairy sources of calcium. Some studies also indicate that moringa can heal damaged bones thus making it a must have calcium rich foods for bones. Dried moringa leaf powder has 17 times more vitamin D than fortified milk. In addition to this, it’s a fix for digestion troubles, immunity and iron.

Ragi:

Ragi is also one of the foods high in calcium and vitamin D.  It is said that no other plant source provides calcium the way ragi can, making it one of a popular non-dairy sources of calcium. Ragi also has vitamin D and along with calcium, it can help in improving bone strength. It is a whole grain that is gluten free also and can be used in baking cakes and cookies.

Potassium rich food:

If the child eats lots of comfort-food, then consuming Potassium rich foods (banana, spinach, cucumber, peas, and sweet potato) will save Calcium from being robbed from the bones.

Almonds:

Amongst all the nuts, almonds are the highest in calcium. One ounce of almonds or about 22 almonds, provides 8% of the recommended daily intake of calcium. (Iyurved’s Daily Nutrition Chocolate and Savoury spread made of Almond and 6 other nuts and seeds)

Seeds:

Many seeds are good sources of calcium. For instance, 1 tablespoon (9 grams) of poppy seeds has 13% of the recommended daily intake, while the same serving of sesame seeds packs 9% of the recommended daily intake. In addition to calcium, chia seeds are also rich in omega 3 fatty acids.

Vegetables:

Cabbage, mustard (sarson leaves), broccoli & ladyfinger are a good source of calcium.

Lotus seeds/ Makhana:

Makhana or lotus seeds are grown in Asian countries and considered as a power foods to increase height. Makhana is an excellent source of many important nutrients. It is loaded with protein, fiber, calcium, magnesium, iron, phosphorus and carbohydrates. Just a bowl of makhana is a great snack for kids. (Recipe to make Makhana ice cream)

Growing leg pain at night

Has it ever happened with your child, that he/she seems perfectly fine in the morning, and all of a sudden start complaining of leg pain at night? It must be a sign of growing leg pain at night in your child. Growing pains are cramping, muscle pains that can occur in preschoolers or in preteens (what are some best fruits for teens?). It is usually caused by overuse of muscles. This can be because of childhood activities, such as running around or playing games, or dancing in birthday parties for too long. Adults may also experience this pain due to some muscle soreness followed by workouts. In some kids these pains get accompanied by stomach pain and headaches. It might be related to stress and anxiety.

What is growing pain or leg pain at night?

Growing leg pain at night is an ache or throb in the legs usually in the front of the thighs, the calves or behind the knees. It affects both the legs and occurs at night, and may disturb the child’s sleep. Data suggests that almost two out of five children get growing knee and joint pains in young age just around the time of their growth spurts. A specific cause for growing pains is unknown. Kids are growing rapidly and their muscles, tendons and ligaments are also growing. One theory suggests that the body parts might not be growing at the same rate as the body, thereby causing a protest and leading to pain or ache.

Other common reasons for knee joint pain in young age can be running, jumping and playing throughout the day, or psychological issues, or vitamin D deficiency, or restless leg syndrome or arthritis.

How can you help your child?

You can comfort your child from knee joint pain in young age by using simple procedures such as massaging gently, applying heating pads, making him/her do some stretching exercises, giving warm bath before bed time and pain- relief medicines if it becomes necessary.

Diet rich in vitamin D, calcium, magnesium (some easy food sources), phosphorus and protein will in general take care of bone and muscle health and help in preventing leg pain at night, knee joint pain in young age or even from arthritis pain in young age.  (What are some common vitamin D and calcium food sources?)

How to know if it is something more serious?

Keep a close watch on your kid and if you see any other symptoms mentioned below, then it might be a cause for concern.

  • Pain continues for a longer period of time
  • Ache in the joints
  • Fever
  • Unusual rashes
  • Limp
  • Less active than usual
Arthritis pain at young age

Arthritis is mostly associated with older people but kids also might be suffering from it. Kid’s arthritis is called juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). Arthritis is commonly confused with growing pains in kids and that is why it is important to understand the difference between the two conditions.

Arthritis is a disease that causes swelling, stiffness and pain in a person’s joints thereby affecting the proper working of joints and causing pain in the joints like knees, hips, ankle, shoulders, elbows and knuckles etc.

Cause for arthritis pain in young age is not known but it is mostly associated with genes which are passed on from parents to their children having a family history of arthritis.

Nutrients and Food sources to prevent knee joint pain in young age
Protein:

Getting enough protein is important for holding on to muscle mass and function. Chickpea, lentils, peanut butter, pumpkin seeds, Quinoa, nuts and seeds have high amounts of protein which helps in building the muscles of the body.
