Ingredients
  • 4 big cabbage leaves
  • Small piece of paneer
  • Small carrot
  • Onion
  • Cucumber
  • Capsicum
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tbsp oil

Procedure

Take water in a tumbler with pinch of salt. As it starts boiling, put cabbage leaves in it and cook for 3-4 minutes on low flame. Keep aside. Take paneer in a bowl and mash it. Add chopped onion, carrot, cucumber and capsicum in it. Put salt and Iyurved’s Daily nutrition Savoury Spread (order here). Mix well and place 1 tbsp of this mixture inside cabbage leaves. Ingredients
  • 2 tbsp Ragi flour
  • 1 medium size carrot
  • 1/4 cup green pea
  • 3-4 cauliflower florets
  • Small piece ginger
  • 2-3 cloves garlics
  • 2 tbsp desi ghee
  • Salt to taste

Procedure

Chop or coarsely grind all the veggies. Take a glass of water and add ragi flour. mix it well and keep aside. Put desi ghee in a skillet. Add chopped veggies and sauté. Add salt and a glass of water. Cover it with lid and cook on sim flame for 5-7 minutes. Pour the Glass of ragi water. Cook it on low flame for 10-15 minutes. keep on stirring to avoid lumps. Switch off the flame.   • 1.5 cups – Jaggery powder
  • 1 tsp – Baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp – Baking powder
  • 2 tbsp – Cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp – Vanilla essence
  • 1.5 tbsp – Oil/ butter
  • 1 cup – Milk/Nut milk
  • 2 tbsp – Iyurved’s Daily nutrition Chocolate spread (order here)
  • Pinch of salt

Procedure

  • Mix ragi flour and wheat flour in a bowl.

  • Add milk/nut milk to adjust the consistency and beat well to make a thick and fluffy batter.

  • 1 cup – Pasta
  • ½ cup – Spinach puree
  • 1 – Chopped onion
  • 3-4 cloves – Chopped Garlic
  • 1 tsp – Grated ginger
  • 3 tbsp – Sorghum millet

Preparation

  • Initially, add some water, pasta to a pan and cook the pasta and keep it aside.
  • In another pan, add oil, grated ginger, garlic, chopped onion and saute well.

Ingredients

  • 5 tbsp Moringa powder or spinach puree (for green)

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour or jowar (sorghum flour)
  • 3 tbsp Psyllium husk
  • Carom seeds (optional)
  • 1 tsp Nutritional yeast (optional)

  • Salt to taste

Procedure

  • For Green dough: Take moringa powder or spinach puree and add wheat flour, salt to make dough.

  • Divide the dough into equal portions.Take a small ball and roll the paratha evenly.

Ingredients

  • 2 cup moong dal/mung bean
  • 1 tsp – Ginger
  • 7-8 cloves garlic
  • 2 green chilies
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • 1/2 cup curd
  • 1 tbsp lemon
  • Hand full of coriander leaves
  • Curry leaves

Procedure

  • Soak moong dal overnight.
  • Grind it with chilies, ginger, garlic and 1/2 tbsp salt. Keep aside for 20 minutes.

  • Grease the idli stand and pour the batter in each mould. Let it cook in steam for 15 minutes. Fluffy moong dal idli is ready.

Child’s Development: 7 Foods That Help Babies in Sitting

The first year of a baby’s life is the most crucial year for a child’s development. Babies develop their skills gradually. It’s so overwhelming to see your newborn doing new activities every day, but these abilities don’t develop overnight. Babies put a lot of effort and handwork to achieve these motor skills. There are a lot of new parents frequently asking questions around baby development including when babies typically hold their head, sit up, roll over crawl and finally walk.

Motor skills refer to the body’s ability to manage the process of movement. Gross Motor skills involve baby’s milestone like holding head, sitting, crawling and walking.

Every parent wants to know if their child’s development is on track or not. Below are the age when normally babies start showing that they are ready to sit and the age when they finally sit without support.

When do babies start sitting

Normally a baby starts to sit with support at  around 5 months to 6 months and without support at around 7 to 9 months. Holding head control and having enough upper body strength is a must for a baby before he/ she is able to sit up on their own. At 9 months babies can sit without any support and easily get in and out of sitting position. When your baby starts sitting up, you should provide support to his back. There are chances that he may lose his balance and hit his head on the floor.

When to consult a doctor

Usually a child who is late doing certain activities catches up to other children. But sometimes, developing late is the sign of a health condition. In case your baby is unable to sit upright without support by the end of nine months, you should consult your doctor. There are many causes of such delay in a child’s development, few are listed below.

  •  Premature birth
  •  Cerebral Palsy (brain damage before birth)
  •  Myopathy (a disease of muscles)
  •  Brain injury
  •  Ataxia (defective muscle coordination)
  •  Problems with vision

How to help your baby in sitting

Right from the beginning you can help your child to achieve their milestones on time. Here are some tips on how you can help your baby to sit on time.

Holding the baby:

Holding the baby in an upright position on your shoulder. The baby tries to control the head position by using his/ her neck muscles. You can start this from the 2nd month, support the baby from the upper body then gradually move towards the hip. This will help them in strengthening their neck muscles.

Tummy time:

Give your baby plenty of tummy time.  Lay your baby on his tummy and place the toys he/ she likes in front of them.  It helps strengthen your baby’s arms, legs, torso, as well as his neck muscles.

Roll over:

When you place them on their tummy they will begin to push up on their arm. Tummy to side rolling is most common in babies at the age of 4 months. By 6 months most babies have gained enough abdominal strength to flip in both directions and roll over from their back to front. Rolling over helps strengthen the upper body and neck muscles that your baby needs to sit up. So always encourage your baby to roll over by placing toys or books near to them, so that they roll over to reach those things.

Sitting with support:

Once the baby gains control over their head, you can encourage them to sit by placing a pillow around them for support. Be careful and stay close to help them if they fall.Try sitting them on the floor while holding their back up straight. This helps improve their muscle control and coordination.

Foods to improve motor skill:

As soon as your baby is 6 months, taking care of their diet is very important, as food or nutrients that they get from food is key for a child’s development on time. Nutrients like protein helps in muscle strengthening, calcium and vitamin d promotes bone health and the foods that promote brain health like omega 3 fatty acids, as this milestone involve the brain and body’s muscles to work together. Below are the foods that help in a child’s development for sitting.

Calcium:

It is really important to get strong bones and we get a chance to build them only once – throughout childhood and adolescence. Children who get enough calcium in childhood start their adult lives with the strongest bones possible. Mostly calcium is stored in bones and teeth where it supports their structure and hardness, but the body also needs calcium for muscles to move and for nerves to carry messages between the brain and every body part. Vitamin D:

Recent study shows that most of the children are not getting essential vitamins and minerals, and especially vitamin D. Some children with low vitamin D complain of pain in the legs and body. Very low vitamin D can lead to soft bones, causing rickets, a bone softening disease and also increase the risk of bone fracture in children. From age 9 – 18 children need more calcium to meet the daily recommended intake.

Omega 3:

Research has established a link between omega 3 fatty acids and brain development in early childhood. These healthy fats have amazing brain boosting power and play a vital role in enhancing memory and attention span. Omega-3 fatty acids are considered as critical brain foods that may counteract oxidative stress and inflammations, two drivers of cognitive decline which may also result in motor skill delay.

Nuts:

All the nuts like almonds, walnuts, cashew, peanuts and hazelnuts are rich in vitamin E and help in boosting memory. They are also antioxidants which protect against cell damage. Ingredients
  • 1 bowl makhana/foxtail
  • 1 tbsp desi ghee
  • salt to taste
  • 1 teaspoon mint powder
  • Pinch Black pepper powder
  • 1 teaspoon chaat masala
  • 1 tbsp Iyurved savoury spread(order here)
Procedure

Warm desi ghee in skillet/Kadhai. Put makhana and roast them for 7-10 minutes on low flame. Sprinkle salt, mint powder, chaat masala and black pepper powder over makhanas. Add Iyurved savoury spread(order here) and mix well. Easy, crispy and healthy snack is ready for kids.

Let’s try to make every healthy food recipe for a child more tasty and nutritious with (hidden) veggies, herbs and nuts. Check this Ragi cheela/pancake is easy recipe of breakfast for babies, toddlers and kids.

Ingredients
  • 2 cups Ragi flour
  • Medium size Onion
  • Small size Tomato
  • Half Capsicum
  • Grated ginger
  • 2 tbsp Iyurved’s 5 Herbs and 7 Nuts Savoury Spread (order here)
  • chilies (optional)
  • Salt to taste
  • 3 tbsp Oil/ Ghee

Procedure

Take ragi flour. Put chopped onion, tomato , capsicum and grated ginger. Add Iyurved’s 5 herbs and 7 nuts savoury spread. (order here) Add salt to taste. Put water slowly and mix to make a thick spreadable paste. Now pour the batter on medium heated skillet ( check by sprinkling some drops of water on it. Water should sizzle right away) and spread evenly ( like dosa). Gently spread oil to the edges. wait for 30-50 seconds and flip the cheela. Press the cheela all around to ensure even cooking. Repeat this process twice or thrice on both side. Ragi cheela is ready to serve with coriander or coconut chutney.

Oral Health of Kids: Tooth Decay Remedies at Home

Teeth are one of the most vital parts of our body. They help us to bite and chew food. Healthy and beautiful teeth give us a bright and beautiful smile. It is important to take care of them from childhood. It is the time when kids are filled with adventure, exploration and growth. Little bit of ignorance and carelessness can create a life long suffering. Playing or climbing here and there can end up with a broken tooth. Slow formation of plaque can result in a cavity. One of the most concerning issues in toddlers and kids are dental cavities. Tooth decay is most common among children. Some tooth decay remedies at home can provide quick relief but, your little bit of attention to the developing symptoms can save your child from unwanted pain and trouble.

Common Dental Issues in Kids
Tooth decay

Children are not proficient at brushing and flossing teeth without supervision. You should help them in holding and brushing teeth until they firmly learn to grasp the tooth brush. To make it a regular practice you have to tell them in the initial stage to brush teeth twice a day. Generally kids love a sugar loaded diet. It forms a layer of plaque over teeth that eats away the enamel which is the main cause of tooth decay. Making your kids brush their teeth properly can help in removing plaque, bacteria and food particles from their teeth and thus prevent early tooth decay. Tooth sensitivity

Tooth sensitivity is another major dental issue that kids may face. Many factors can be responsible for sensitivity. It can be uncomfortable and distracting for your child. It is important to take your child for dental check-up at least twice in a year to diagnose the underlying causes. Some factors that can cause tooth sensitivity are:

  • Cavities
  • Newly erupting permanent teeth
  • Teeth grinding
  • Plaque formation
  • Cracked filling
Dental emergencies

Dental emergencies are something that can happen anytime. While participating in sports activities, during rough fights with siblings, falling while learning riding cycle or bike or any other unexpected accidents can be a reason for dental emergencies. All these can result in cracking, breaking or teeth chipping. In worst scenarios teeth can be knocked out permanently. Mouth guard is a good option to prevent sports related tooth injuries. Parents have to keep an eye on their children while they are playing to avoid such injuries.

Gingivitis and Gum Diseases

Generally people think that gum diseases only occur in adults. But, it is quite common in kids also. Gingivitis is a precursor of gum disease. Red swollen gums, little bit bleeding while brushing or flossing are some of the symptoms of gum diseases. It is mostly common in children with poor oral hygiene. It can be avoided by taking proper care and brushing and flossing daily.

Bad breath

The bacteria in our mouth feeds on leftover food, fluid and plaque and produces hydrogen sulfide, which leads to a bad smell in the mouth. In children, it is most common in the morning when they wake up. Brushing your teeth before going to bed at night can prevent this problem to a large extent. Other than that, cleaning your tongue and using an antibacterial mouthwash can also help.

Excessive thumb sucking

We have often seen infants, toddlers and kids sucking their thumbs or pacifiers. They use it as a means to soothe irritations and anxiety. It’s not a problem until it becomes a habit. Prolonged thumb sucking can affect the development of teeth in kids or can create problems with teeth alignment. It can cause open bite. The upper and lower front teeth don’t meet due to the thumb thus do not fit together properly. Another problem that can be caused due to thumb sucking is that upper incisor teeth may be tipped forward. This may make it difficult for your child to bite or chew or even can affect the kid’s speech. Parents should break this habit after the baby crosses the infant stage.

How to clean baby’s gums:

Babies don’t have teeth as they are born. So there is no need to use a toothbrush or toothpaste for cleaning mouth. But, you can brush their gums to establish the habit of oral hygiene. Take a clean damp cloth, fix it in your index finger and run it slowly and smoothly over the baby’s gums and tongue. Just doing this twice a day would be enough. There is no need to use any product in their mouth. As the baby starts teething, initially you can use only water to clean their mouth. As they get several teeth, this is the time when you can put a tiny amount of fluoride free toothpaste on a toothbrush with soft bristles and teach them how to hold and brush their teeth.

Foods to strengthen kid’s teeth
Vitamin C

There are many things your kids eat during the day. They can develop different kinds of bacteria in the kid’s mouth which can cause gingivitis first stage gum disease. Vitamin C rich foods such as oranges, kiwis, papayas, limes, tomatoes and sweet potatoes can help to kill these bacteria. It also promotes a healthy supply of collagen in gums. Calcium

Calcium is one of the most important nutrients for healthy teeth. It strengthens the hard outer shell of the tooth called enamel, which is the defense against erosion and cavities. Calcium rich food like milk, cheese, broccoli and other milk products are the best food sources for kid’s healthy teeth development. (What are calcium rich foods?)

Chewable vegetables

Cucumbers, green beans, peas, raw carrots are some foods which can mechanically cleans teeth by just chewing them. Chewing these foods can vanish the layer of plaque naturally. Encourage your kids to chew these foods slowly to get their teeth clean. (Recipe of carrot beetroot pasta sauce)

Egg yolk

Eggs are one of the highest natural sources of vitamin D. Just one whole large egg provides 50% of vitamin D required for the day. It helps to maintain strong bones and teeth. Moringa

Moringa is a superfood. It has 3 times more calcium than milk which makes it an excellent food to treat weak or damaged bones and also one of the best non-dairy sources of calcium. Some studies also indicate that moringa can heal damaged bones thus making it a must have calcium rich foods for bones and teeth. Tooth Decay Remedies At Home
Warm Salt Water

It is considered as one of the effective first line tooth decay remedies at home for toothache. As a natural disinfectant salt water helps to release food particles by loosening, that may be stuck in between teeth. It also heals internal wounds and reduces inflammation. You can take warm water and mix ½ teaspoon of salt in it. Use it as a mouthwash thrice a day.

Clove

It has been used from ages to treat toothaches. Clove contains a natural antiseptic Eugenol. Clove oil numbs the pain effectively and reduces inflammation. Dab a small amount of cotton in clove oil and fix it in a cavity hole or apply on the affected area. You can also make a mouthwash by adding a drop of this oil into a glass of water. It is one of the best tooth decay remedies at home for toothache.

Guava Leaves

Guava leaves have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties that heals wounds and can help in oral care. You can chew fresh guava leaves or boil them to make a mouthwash.

Garlic

Garlic has been known for its medicinal properties from past thousands of years. It can be used as pain reliever in toothache. It can kill plaque forming bacteria and protect teeth from cavities. You can make paste and apply it on the affected area to get relief. It is also considered as one of the effective tooth decay remedies at home which can provide relief from toothache instantly.

Asafetida

Asafetida and lemon juice is one of the common home remedies for toothache. Mix asafetida with warm lemon juice and apply on the affected tooth. Use this after every 30 minutes until the pain subsides.

Peppermint

It is a widely used herb for dental health as it acts as a breath freshener and teeth whitener. Recent scientific studies have found that peppermint fights bacteria inside your mouth which causes gum disease. Peppermint oil is an effective way to reduce plaque (a combination of bacteria, food particles, saliva and acid that sticks to the teeth). Neem

Traditionally neem sticks were used as toothbrushes. It has a high place in the traditional medicine world. Due to its antibacterial properties, neem is considered to treat bacteria and heal. It is quite useful in dentistry for curing gingival (tissues which provide a seal around teeth) problems and maintaining oral health in a natural way. Neem is an additive in some branded toothpastes nowadays. Neem oil has antibacterial and antifungal properties that can prevent gum inflammation and toothache. Ingredients
  • 2 cups ragi (finger millet) flour
  • 1 teaspoon cardamom powder
  • single pinch cinnamon powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tbsp baking soda
  • 1/2 cup khaand/ jaggery powder
  • 3/4 cup oil
  • 3 tbsp Iyurved 5 herbs and 7 nuts chocolate spread (order here)

Procedure

Take ragi flour, cardamom powder, cinnamon powder, salt and baking powder. Put Khaand (a sweetening agent and healthy substitute of sugar), oil /butter, Iyurved 5 herbs and 7 nuts chocolate spread (order here) and mix well using a wire whisk. When the mixture is well combined, start adding nut milk to the dough to bring it all together. You would need 3-4 tablespoons of milk to bring the dough together. Cover it and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Make round balls and flatten them in your palms. Pre-heat the oven for 5-7 minutes. Take a flat dish, put butter paper on it. No need to grease it. Place the biscuit roundels and bake for 10-12 minutes at 180 degree Celsius.

  • 1 ripe banana pieces (frozen for a few hours)
  • Medium avocado
  • ½ cup soft tofu or less than ½ cup nut milk (almond or coconut)
  • ½ cup cocoa powder
  • 3 tbsp roasted pistachio powder
