COVID 19 vaccination of pregnant women or breastfeeding mothers

vaccination pregnant

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease that has spread rapidly throughout the world. In March 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic. Since then the pandemic has severely impacted health systems, economic and social progress throughout the world. In this article, we will learn whether vaccination of pregnant woman or breastfeeding mothers is safe or not?

COVID-19 is caused by a newly discovered coronavirus now named as the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Coronaviruses (CoV) are zoonotic, and are transmitted between animals and humans. Coronaviruses cause diseases such as the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and more mild illnesses including the common cold. (Home remedies of cold in kids)

The most common signs of infection with COVID-19 include fever, dry cough (Home remedies for cough), shortness of breath or difficulty in breathing, and tiredness or fatigue. Though most people (~80%) experience mild disease and recover without requiring hospitalization. However, globally, around 20% of people who contract COVID-19 become seriously ill and have trouble breathing. Also, in more severe cases, the infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and even lead to death. (Reference: MoHFW)

Vaccination and pregnant WOMAN:

COVID-19 infection during pregnancy may result in rapid deterioration of health of pregnant women and could also affect the foetus. Based on the recommendations from National Technical Advisory Group on Immunization (NTAGI), MoHFW has approved vaccination of pregnant women against COVID-19. But with the condition that the pregnant women may be informed about the risks of exposure to COVID-19 infection along with the risks and benefits associated with the COVID-19 vaccines available in the country.

vaccination pregnant

Moreover, A pregnant woman who opts for vaccination, could be vaccinated at any time of the pregnancy. Also, to help pregnant women make an informed decision to be vaccinated, they should be provided with information about the risks of COVID-19 infection in pregnancy, the benefits of vaccination, along with the likely side effects of vaccination. vaccination in India in pregnant women is showing a hike. (Reference: WHO) (World Health Organization)

  • Pregnancy does not increase the risk to COVID-19 infection, but current evidence indicates that pregnant women are at an increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19 compared to non-pregnant women in case they get infected.
  • Additionally, pregnant women with COVID-19 are at increased risk for preterm birth and might have an increased risk of other adverse pregnancy outcomes.
  • Most pregnant women will be asymptomatic or have mild disease, BUT their health may deteriorate rapidly and that might affect the foetal outcome.
  • It is important that they take all precautions to protect themselves from acquiring COVID-19, including taking vaccination against COVID-19.
  • WHO recommends vaccination in pregnant women when the benefits of vaccination to the pregnant woman outweigh the potential risks.
  • It is therefore advisable that a pregnant woman should take COVID-19 vaccine.
vaccination pregnant
Are there any side effects of the COVID 19 vaccines that can either harm the pregnant woman or her foetus?
  • COVID 19 vaccines available are safe and vaccination protects pregnant women against COVID 19 illness/disease like other individuals. (Immunity building foods)
  • Based on current knowledge, experts believe that COVID -19 vaccines are unlikely to pose a risk to the pregnant person or foetus.
  • Like any medicine a vaccine may have side effects which are normally mild. After getting the vaccine, she can get a mild fever, pain at the injection site, or feel unwell for 1-3 days.
  • The long-term adverse effects and safety of vaccines for foetus and child is not known yet.
  • Very rarely, (one in 1-5 lakh persons) the beneficiary may, after COVID 19 vaccination, experience some of the following symptoms within 20 days after getting the injection which may need immediate attention.
Symptoms occurring within 20 days after receiving any COVID 19 vaccine:
  • Shortness of breath (difficulty in breathing)
  • Chest Pain
  • Pain in limbs / pain on pressing the limbs or swelling in the limbs (arm or calf)
  • Small pinpoint hemorrhages (petechial) or bruising of the skin beyond the vaccination site
  • Persistent abdominal pain with or without vomiting.
  • Seizures in the absence of previous history of seizures with or without vomiting.
  • Severe and persistent headaches with or without vomiting (in the absence of previous history of migraine or chronic headache)
  • Weakness/paralysis of limbs or any particular side of the body
  • Persistent vomiting without any obvious reason
  • Blurred vision/ pain in eyes
  • Any other symptom or health condition which is of concern to the recipient or the family
Are there any specific contraindications for vaccination of PREGNANT WOMAN?

As for the general population, pregnant women should avoid vaccination in the following conditions:

  • Anaphylactic or allergic reaction to the previous dose of COVID-19 vaccine (Home remedies for allergies)
  • Anaphylaxis or allergic reaction to vaccines or injectable therapies, pharmaceutical products, food-items etc.

Vaccine is temporarily contraindicated in the following conditions:

  • Diagnosed COVID-19 infection – defer for 12 weeks from infection or 4 to 8 weeks from recovery
  • Active COVID-19 infection
  • COVID-19 infection treated with anti-COVID-19 monoclonal antibodies or convalescent plasma.

(Reference: MoHFW)

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):
If a pregnant woman has already had COVID-19, when should she be vaccinated?

In case a woman has been infected with COVID-19 infection during the current pregnancy, then she should be vaccinated soon after the delivery.

What are the benefits of VACCINE?

The COVID-19 vaccines produce protection against the disease, as a result of developing an immune response to the SARS-Cov-2 virus. In addition, developing immunity through vaccination means there is a reduced risk of developing the illness and its consequences. So, this is how immunity helps you fight the virus if exposed.

Should we eat or drink differently the day or two after getting vaccinated?

The effectiveness of the vaccine is not dependent on any food or drink before or after taking the vaccine. (Reference: WHO) (World Health Organization)

Is it safe for pregnant women, those planning to become pregnant, and breastfeeding mothers to receive COVID-19 vaccines?

In the interim, WHO recommends that for pregnant women the use of the COVID-19 vaccine depends on the basis of a benefit vs risk assessment. WHO does not recommend pregnancy testing prior to vaccination. Neither does WHO recommend delaying pregnancy or terminating pregnancy because of vaccination. Vaccination with any of the vaccine products assessed by the WHO Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization can be offered to breastfeeding women. Also, WHO does not recommend discontinuation of breastfeeding after vaccination.

Claims on social media suggested that COVID-1919 vaccine could affect female fertility. Is it true?

Rumours or social media posts suggesting that COVID-19 vaccines could cause infertility are not true and totally baseless. Such rumours were floated in the past against other vaccines also e.g. polio and measles. None of the available vaccines affects fertility. All vaccines and their constituents are tested first on animals and later in humans to assess if they have any such side effects. Vaccines are authorized for use only after their safety and efficacy is assured. (Reference: MOHFW)

Should women who are on their periods take the COVID-19 vaccine?

Women can receive a vaccine at any point in their menstrual cycle

(Reference: WHO) (World Health Organization)

What are the side effects of COVID-19 vaccines?

Like any vaccine, COVID-19 vaccines can cause mild, short term side effects. Most reactions to vaccines are mild and go away within a few days on their own.

Reported side effects to COVID-19 vaccines have mostly been mild to moderate and short-lasting. They include: fever, fatigue, headache, muscle pain, chills, diarrhoea, and pain at the injection site. The chances of any of these side effects following vaccination differ according to the specific COVID-19 vaccine. (Reference: WHO)

There are multiple ways of treating or reducing the pigmented lips. Everyone wishes for red lips. Apart from the cosmetic procedure, here are a few effective home remedies that will answer your question of how to lighten dark lips. Remember, consistency is the key!

1. Lemon and Sugar:

Lemon has skin lightening properties. It exfoliates and bleaches the skin. Sugar acts as a scrubbing agent. Honey moisturizes the skin.  Take a slice of freshly cut lemon. On it add some sugar and honey. Gently massage your lips for a few minutes. Rest it for a minute or two. Rinse with cold water. If you feel it drying out, apply honey and rinse.

2. Potato:

Potatoes have a naturally occurring compound called catecholase which is responsible for reducing darkness. Rub a slice of potato on your lips. Rest it overnight. Wash with lukewarm water.

3. Milk and turmeric:

Raw milk and turmeric are indeed a great combination to reduce dark lips. It exfoliates the skin and acts as a melanin inhibitor. Mix 1 tablespoon of milk with ½ tablespoon of turmeric. Make a paste and massage the lips. Rest for 5 minutes. Wash clean.

Pomegranate is a great answer to how to lighten dark lips. It helps reduce hyperpigmentation and restore the natural colour of your lips. Crush or grind pomegranate seeds. Mix raw milk. Make a paste and gently massage your lips. Leave for 5 mins rinse off with cold water. You can also mix carrot or beetroot juice for extra benefits.

6. Cucumber juice:

Cucumber soothes and rejuvenates skin. It has a good amount of vitamin C and antioxidants. Juice half of a cucumber. Refrigerate it. Once cooled, apply it on the lips and gently massage. Leave it for 30 minutes. Rinse well.

7. Rose water:

Apart from soothing and moisturizing the lips, rose water helps in healing the lip. Mix well honey and rose water. Apply this to your lips at least twice a day. Leave it for 15-20 minutes. Wash with cold water. Alternatively, you can mix rose petal paste with honey and milk.

8. Beetroot:

Baby feeding schedule: 9 to 12 months old

As your baby completes 9 months of age, He/ she probably moved on from breast milk or formula milk to some different solids. At this tender age they are exploring their preferences and changing their mind from day to day in terms of foods and tastes. Babies really grow fast in the first year of their age and their nutritional needs also change accordingly. They themselves didn’t know their likes and dislikes, thus use to experiment with foods each day. Slowly as they get to know the taste of different food items they develop taste buds. This is the time when you need to make a proper schedule to feeding up baby.

Some babies show more interest in fruits, some may prefer veggies, some like to eat in pureed or mashed form, whether some enjoy chewing or like finger foods more. As it is a growing age baby goes through a lot of physical and mental developmental changes. Feeding up baby according to the planned schedule can help to provide a balanced nutritional diet that not only fills their little stomach but also meet all the required nutrients they need in a day.

How much milk is required?

Around 9 months of age, food schedule of a baby should consist of three proper meals a day with one or two healthy snacks (Some healthy snacks ideas) in between. These snacks can include fruits, finger foods, or any light preparations. In spite of this your baby still needs breast milk or formula milk as an important part of his/her meal plan. Milk is the most essential source of protein and at this age the baby needs ample protein as it is the building block of the body. Around this age the quantity of milk required can be anywhere from 15 to 25 oz a day. Its absolutely depends upon the consumption of solid foods by baby throughout the day.

Baby feeding schedule for 9 – 12 months old

It is important to include breast milk/ formula milk in your 9 months baby’s meal planner. Some mothers want to wean off milk completely whereas some continue up to 2 years of age. It’s absolutely a personal choice and the mother is the one who can make decisions. As your baby completes 6 months of age, feeding up solids to them becomes important for them, because at this time they need additional nutrients for their growth and development. Around 9- 12 months of age a baby may require approximately 700-900 calories per day. Breast milk (How to increase breast milk production?) or formula milk is sufficient to provide only 400-500 calories and the remaining you can balance through solids only. Sharing a simple meal planner you can follow for your baby. According to your baby’s preferences you can make your own chart including various combinations of foods.

Breakfast options
  • Half cup of small sliced soft fruits
  • Half cup cereals
  • Upma, mung bean cheela/wrap
  • 5-6 oz of breast milk/ formula milk
Mid morning snacks

  • 4-5 oz breast or formula milk
Lunch options
  • Khichdi/ Porridge

Attentive: Keep a close check on your baby while he/she is eating. Offer food in small pieces as big ones may choke.

Sitting position: Use an upright position while feeding your baby. Make the baby sit on a high chair or just make sure that he/ she is not in a lying position.

Milk bottle: Never put your baby to sleep with a milk bottle. This can cause dental issues in babies. (Which milk to give?)

Popcorn or Makhana- the better snack for Kids

Giving healthy snacks to kids every time when they have cravings in between meals is the toughest job for every mother. By handing over a pack of chips, sugary cookies and cold drinks we miss the chance to feed them something healthy and nutritious. In this article we will discuss which is healthier of the two snacks: Popcorn or Makhana (lotus seeds) and will see who wins the race in being more nutritious.

Popcorn: What makes a movie perfect? The answer is popcorn. Whether it is in the theatre or at home, movies are incomplete without popcorn. They are considered as one of the healthy snacks for kids. It has ample dietary fiber and low calorie count. Popcorn is also a good source of polyphenols, an antioxidant that helps in better blood circulation and digestive health. And is considered to be a food that can aid in weight loss too. Although always remember that vending-machine popcorn is not just high in calories but also in sodium. Air-popped would be a good way to prepare popcorn.

Makhana (Lotus seeds): Makhana or lotus seeds are grown in Asian countries and considered as a power food. It is an excellent source of many important nutrients. Moreover, it is loaded with protein, fiber, calcium, magnesium, iron, phosphorus and carbohydrates. It also contains antioxidants like gallic acid, chlorogenic acid and epicatechin, which reduces inflammation, helps to neutralize harmful free radicals and prevent oxidative stress. To sum up, makahan and popcorn both are healthy snacks options. Its a kind of co win situation for you to offer these healthy snacks to your kids.

Makhana (Lotus Seeds) vs. Popcorn

Amongst many minerals and vitamins that contribute towards brain development and function, a few are Manganese, Vitamin B6 and B9. They are abundantly present in Makhana.

  • Just a cup of Makhana is enough to meet 50% of Manganese requirements for the day.
  • It is those rare snacks which are loaded with a good balance of B vitamins, 5 times that of popcorn.
  • Makhana has 1/4th of the calories of popcorn. This gap is huge in the limited amount of calories a child can be fed. Every calorie a child consumes should be loaded with nutrients and not be an empty calorie.
  • Not just Brain, Makhana also supports strong bone development of a growing child.

Hence we can say that if we have to choose between Popcorn or Makhana as a healthier snacks for kids, Makhana wins over many folds in nutrition. However, popcorn is not an unhealthy snack option, but Makhana is definitely more nutritious and healthier. So next time when you are watching a movie or otherwise, offer your kids roasted makhana. They will surely love this crunchy healthy snack.

Health benefits of Makhana:

Strengthen bones:

Calcium is crucial for bone development and strengthening, especially for kids in growing years to have strong bones for lifetime. In addition to this, Makhana being high in calcium helps kids in bone development and adults in bone strengthening.(Foods that help build strong bones?)

Gluten free:

This superfood is gluten free, which means if you are gluten intolerant or somebody who avoids gluten foods, can enjoy it without worrying about the reactions. (Foods that can help with allergies?)

Weight loss:

Loaded with sufficient amounts of protein, this healthy snack for kids helps to stay full for longer and prevents overeating. Also low in calories, makhana is an ideal food for weight loss. Moreover, the fiber in it moves slowly through your digestive tract to keep you feeling full for a long time. (Foods that can help with weight control?)

Helps in cognitive function:

Makhana have high thiamine content, which helps with sustaining the cognitive function of the nerves and contributes to the process of neurotransmission. (Brain developments foods for kids?)

Better digestion:

The high fiber contents of makhana aids in digestion and keeps the bowel movement regular. The antioxidant properties of makhana make them even better for digestion. It also helps in prevention of excessive and frequent urination. (How to fix gut health?)

Improve heart health:

Makhana is the great source of magnesium, which significantly improves the quality of blood and oxygen in the body and reduces the risk of heart diseases. Makhana is high in potassium and low in sodium, which keeps the blood pressure level in check. (How to keep the liver safe from fatty liver disease?)

Good for skin

Makhana contains several amino acids, which help promote skin elasticity and skin health. Also the antioxidant properties in it help fight free radicals, thus they act as an anti-ageing agent. Since Makhana is high in a natural flavonoid called kaempferol, it helps to keep away the signs of ageing such as hair loss, graying of hairs and formation of wrinkles. So it is not only good for kids but for adults too. (Remedies and foods to avoid rashes in skin?)

To conclude we can say that Makhana and popcorn both are healthy but Makhana has more nutritional benefits than popcorn.
