10 easy dinner recipes In India for kids of all ages

Ayurvedic chocolate spread by Iyurved

Most parents are often confused as to what to feed their babies for dinner. Unlike breakfast and lunch, dinner has an impact on a child’s sleep too. As a result, extra care must be taken while choosing dinner recipes for babies because putting your baby to sleep is one of the most difficult chores you must accomplish every day. If your kid is breastfed and has been introduced to solid meals, then he/she most likely eat a range of items for dinner. Purees, cereal, rice, fruits, and so forth. As a result, make sure his/her dinner is nutritious, filling, and easy to digest while still maintaining his sleep cycle. Here are few tips and easy, healthy dinner recipes in India for babies and toddlers.

Some tips to keep in mind before feeding dinner for babies:

  1. It is better to introduce new foods at breakfast or lunch rather than at dinner time. This helps to identify any food allergies in babies.
  2. Avoid snacks and processed foods – baked goods, ready to eat meals which are high in refined carbs, sodium, and transfat. This not only makes them feel full, but also has long-term health consequences.
  3. Choose foods that can be easily digested by babies at night.
  4. Make sure to feed them dinner at least two or three hours before their bedtime.
  5. Always prepare and store baby foods in clean and sterilized steel or glass containers and avoid containers made up of plastic.
  6. Use steel cups to introduce water rather than a feeding bottle to bring out the transition in growing babies.

6 Months Baby Dinner Recipes:

Solids are introduced to the babies at this stage after indicators of physical development such as adequate head and neck control, curiosity in meals are observed. Digestive enzymes are also produced at this stage, which helps digestion. At this age, babies are exclusively breastfed, with solids introduced once or twice a day. As a result, introducing solids around dinner time is not recommended for a six-month-old baby which may lead to colic, digestion related issues and allergies. (6-month baby food chart)

7-9 Months Baby Dinner Recipes:

Solid feeding was limited to only twice a day in the sixth month. However, by the seventh month, the infant has tried a variety of foods and is ready to go up to three solid meals each day including dinner. The frequency of breast milk can be reduced and solids can be increased at the end of the ninth month. (7 Foods to increase breast milk )

You may have noticed that your kid is easily bored these days and prefers to play with her meals. That’s your cue to start introducing a lot of diversity into her diet. It is important to make wise dinner choices for babies which are easy on their stomachs. Look at few 7-9 month babies dinner recipes in India.

Common FAQ’s related to dinner for babies and toddlers:

1. What is the right time to introduce dinner to babies?

You may need to experiment with the time schedule to ensure that your kid is getting enough to eat. Dinner should preferably be served two to three hours before the nighttime bottle and her usual bedtime.

2. What are the foods to avoid for babies during dinner?

Avoid foods high in sugar and salt, such as canned foods, processed meats (such as sausages, hot dogs, and ham), and frozen dinners should be avoided. Give foods that are cooked properly. Avoid fresh vegetables and high-protein foods such as meat, egg, and spinach for dinner because they take longer to digest and may interrupt your child’s sleep.

3. When to introduce water or breastmilk to babies after dinner?

Water can be given to the babies: 10-15 minutes after dinner. Babies who are still breastfed or bottle-fed can be fed with milk one hour after dinner or 30 minutes before bedtime. (Right time to introduce water for the baby)

4. Is it true that introducing solids at dinnertime causes constipation in children?

When a baby first starts eating solid foods, he may become constipated (hard stools). It could be induced by high-starchy foods like rice, unripe bananas, apple sauce and potatoes etc. If your baby becomes constipated, change to whole wheat or barley cereal instead of rice cereal, and avoid unripened bananas and sweet potatoes. And, of course, moderation is a golden rule as an excess of any food might cause indigestion. (10 foods that help constipation in kids)

Dinner time is crucial, and adequate care should be taken when feeding them, as the consequences might be seen as late as midnight. So, don’t force the child to eat something if they don’t like it, even if it is highly nutritious. Choose foods that are easy to chew and swallow. Make sure the food is cool before serving.

Baby’s milestone: 6 foods that help in walking

The first year of a baby’s life is the most crucial year for their gross motor skill development. Motor skills refer to the body’s ability to manage the process of movement. Gross Motor skills involves baby’s milestone like holding head, sitting, crawling and walking. During her first year, your baby is busy developing coordination and muscle strength in every part of her body.

Babies develop their skills gradually. It’s so overwhelming to see your newborn doing new activities everyday, but these abilities don’t develop overnight. Babies put a lot of effort and handwork to achieve these motor skills. There are a lot of new parents frequently asking questions around baby development including when babies typically hold their head, sit up, roll over crawl and finally walk. So below are some baby’s milestone related these motor skills.

Baby’s milestone
Head control:

Your baby’s first big milestone is his/her control over the head. Babies are born with fairly weak muscles and they will rely upon you to support their head and neck. By the end of 2 months the baby should be able to lift it slightly and turn from side to side while lying on their stomach. All these little movements help strengthen the baby’s neck muscles. By 6 months generally the baby will be able to hold their head steady and gain control over their neck.

Roll over:

At around 4 months the baby starts to roll over. When you place them on their tummy they will begin to push up on their arm. Tummy to side rolling is most common in babies at this age. By 6 months most babies have gained enough abdominal strength to flip in both directions and roll over from their back to front. Rolling over helps strengthen the upper body and neck muscles that your baby needs to sit up. So always encourage your baby to roll over by placing toys or books near to them, so that they roll over to reach those things.

Setting:

Holding head control and having enough upper body strength is a must for a baby  before he/ she is able to sit up on their own. At around 5 to 6 months, babies begin to sit with little support. At 9 months babies can sit without any support and easily get in and out of sitting position.

Walking:

Once the baby is comfortable in sitting, the next baby’s milestone is walking. Just like other milestone, walking age also varies between children. Some take their first step around 9 to 12 months while others may take a little longer time i.e around 15 to 17 months. At around 9 months, babies most likely start trying to pull themselves up to stand while holding something like bed or sofa. Soon they also try to take some steps holding from one side of the furniture to the next. They may also be able to stand without support till their first birthday. At 14 months normally most of the babies walk a few steps independently and by the end of 17 months your child will become steadier in his/ her walk.

Causes of delay

Motor skill development of the child is an important aspect in a child’s overall growth and development. But problems in sitting, crawling and walking are the most common developmental delay a child faces. A child with motor skill developmental delay may experience difficulty coordinating certain movements such as holding a pencil, walking and performing activities requiring brain and body coordination. Blow are some of the basic causes of these delays in kids:

  • Premature birth
  • Cerebral Palsy (brain damage before birth)
  • Myopathy (a disease of muscles)
  • Brain injury
  • Ataxia (defective muscle coordination)
  • Problems with vision
  • Spina Bifida (birth defect in the baby that occurs when the spine and spinal cord do not develop completely)
Tips to improve motor skill

Usually a child who is late doing certain activities catches up to other children. But sometimes, developing late is the sign of a health condition. In case a child does not show any of the above mentioned motor skill development on time, talk with your pediatrician. In addition, try these tips mentioned below

  • Give your baby plenty of tummy time.  Lay your baby on his tummy and place the toys he/ she likes in front of them.  It helps strengthen your baby’s arms, legs, torso, as well as his neck muscles.
  • Once the baby gains control over their head, you can encourage them to sit by placing a pillow around them for support. Be careful and stay close to help them if they fall.
  • Try sitting them on the floor while holding their back up straight. This helps improve their muscle control and coordination.
  • Once the baby starts sitting independently, encourage them to crawl. Set up an area on the floor with their favorite toys and things that they can explore and if they don’t crawl to reach out to toys show them how to crawl by doing yourself and ask your baby to imitate.
  • Once your baby pulls himself up and gains balance holding your hands, guide him take a few steps, this will help him gain confidence to take those first steps.
  • When the baby starts balancing and standing for a few seconds, start balancing games. Sit with the baby on the floor and help them stand up. Then count how long they can stay up before falling. Don’t forget to praise after each attempt.
  • Allow your child to be bare feet. There are tiny muscles in the feet that need to be developed. You can do this by bearing weight on them. The muscles in your feet can easily grasp the ground when bare feet.
  • Place their favorite things just out of reach so they have no choice but to try and stand to get it.
  • Bouncing a baby up and down strengthens their lower body and works on their balance. Hold their arms and hands, and assist them in learning to bounce.
Foods to improve motor skill:

As soon as your baby is 6 months, taking care of their diet, as food or nutrients that they get from food is key for a baby to achieve different milestones on time. Nutrients like protein helps in muscle strengthening, calcium and vitamin d promotes bone health and the most important foods that promote brain healthy like omega 3 fatty acids, as these developments involve the brain and body’s muscles to work together. Below are the foods that help in baby’s milestones like sitting, crawling and walking.

Omega 3:

Research has established a link between omega 3 fatty acids and brain development in early childhood. These healthy fats have amazing brain boosting power and play a vital role in enhancing memory and attention span. Omega-3 fatty acids are considered as critical brain foods that may counteract oxidative stress and inflammations, two drivers of cognitive decline which may also result in motor skill delay.

Nuts:

All the nuts like almonds, walnuts, cashew, peanuts and hazelnuts are rich in vitamin E and help in boosting memory. They are also antioxidants which protect against cell damage. Walnuts are rich in omega 3 fatty acids and are a valuable substance for brain function, memory and thinking abilities. This fatty acid also encourages cognitive functions. ( best nuts for protein)

Seeds:

Apart from nuts, seeds like flex, chia, melon, sesame and pumpkins also contain powerful antioxidants like vitamin E that protect the brain from free radical damage. Sunflower seeds impact overall mood and mental processing powers and therefore it is considered a brain boosting snack. Pumpkin seeds are high in magnesium, copper, and much higher in zinc than other seeds, which help in increasing concentration, memory and thus helps in better coordination.

Ayurvedic Herbs:

Ayurveda has the potential to not only correct imbalances in our children, but also to set them on an enduring path toward optimal health and well-being. Thus, ayurvedic herbs must be included in the list of health foods for kids. Ayurvedic herbs such as ashwagandha, mulethi, brahmi, shallaki and turmeric are great for kids’ development. Overall, these herbs support immunity, bone strength, brain development and overall growth.

Calcium:

It is really important to get strong bones and we get a chance to build them only once – throughout childhood and adolescence. Children who get enough calcium in childhood start their adult lives with the strongest bones possible. Mostly calcium is stored in bones and teeth where it supports their structure and hardness, but the body also needs calcium for muscles to move and for nerves to carry messages between the brain and every body part. Calcium is predominantly found in milk and milk based products like cheese. And is also found in smaller quantities in some nuts and seeds. (Should kids take whey protein?) Moreover, few herbs such as shallaki also contain calcium.

Antioxidants:

Antioxidants are compounds produced in your body or naturally found in some foods that scavenge or neutralize the effects of cell damage by potentially harmful molecules known as free radicals. Fortunately eating a diet rich in antioxidants or antioxidant rich foods help to fight oxidative stress and reduce the risk of many chronic diseases. Turmeric, Vitamin E, cocoa, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Selenium, Beta carotene, Lycopene, Lutein, Zeaxanthin, Manganese, Polyphenols show great antioxidant properties.

Sleep Well Chocolate Spread

7 health foods for kids daily nutrition

heal foods for kids by Iyurved

Taking care of kid’s nutrition from early years itself is very important. This not only keeps their present active but also ensures a dependable and disease-free future. What are the benefits of eating nutritious food? Nutritious health foods for kids and healthy diet has many benefits for children: improves mental health, stabilizes energy, builds immunity and prepares the body against diseases. You can easily develop healthy eating habits in your children from their childhood. This can be the best gift you can give them for their better tomorrow. (Healthy eating for children?)

WHAT COMPRISES A NUTRITIOUS OR HEALTHY DIET FOR KIDS?

A nutritious diet plan must provide all the essential nutrients like carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals and water in the required amounts. Requirements of essential nutrients vary with age, gender, physiological status and physical activity. (Why is balanced diet important for children?)

RECOMMENDED DIETARY ALLOWANCE FOR INDIAN KIDS AS PER NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF NUTRITION, HYDERABAD:

RDA for Macronutrients and Minerals
RDA for Vitamins
7 health foods for kids daily nutrition:
Protein:

Protein makes up building blocks of organs, muscles, skin and hormones. Our body needs protein to maintain and repair tissues. Meanwhile, children need it for proper growth in their early years too. Fish, poultry, nuts (almond, peanut, cashew, hazelnut), beans, are best choices. A balanced protein rich breakfast is always great for children to start their day. It helps them stay full for longer ideas and hence protein is a must for proper child nutrition. (How to add protein to your diet?)

Good fats:

Health foods for kids must limit fats that are high in saturated fat and avoid trans-fat. Nuts, avocado, seeds (such as pumpkin seeds, melon seeds, sunflower seeds) and few oils are the healthiest sources of unsaturated fat. It is good for eye, bones and mental health of child, helps to boost brain and nervous system development, and strengthen the immune system. Encourage your child to eat all these good fats that support kid’s nutrition. (Foods and remedies for cough?)

Calcium:

It is really important to get strong bones and teeth and we get chance to build them only once – throughout childhood and adolescence. Children who get enough amount of calcium in childhood start their adult lives with the strongest bones possible. Mostly calcium is stored in bones and teeth where it supports their structure and hardness, but the body also needs calcium for muscles to move and for nerves to carry messages between the brain and every body part. Calcium is predominately found in milk and milk based products like cheese. And is also found in smaller quantities in some nuts and seeds. (Should kids take whey protein?) Moreover, few herbs such as shallaki also contains calcium.

Carbohydrates:

Fibre, starches and sugar are very essential food for healthy diet that body turns into glucose to give energy to function. Carbs that take time to digest and have fibre in them are complex carbs which are found in naturally existing fruits, vegetables, almonds, cashews, hazelnut, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, melon seeds and whole grains.

Vitamin and minerals:

Vitamins and minerals help us to grow, to form bones, muscles, for eyesight, for skin and organs and most importantly help us to fight against infections by building immunity. Deficiency of certain vitamins and minerals can lead to severe issues related to health. The best way to ensure that your child is getting enough vitamins and minerals for proper growth and development is to provide them with five food groups (fruit and vegetable, complex carbs, dairy, protein and fat).

Ayurvedic Herbs:

Ayurveda has the potential to not only correct imbalances in our children, but also to set them on an enduring path toward optimal health and well-being. Thus, ayurvedic herbs must be included in the list of health foods for kids. Ayurvedic herbs such as ashwagandha, mulethi, brahmi, shallaki and turmeric are great for kids development. Overall, these herbs support immunity, bone strength, brain development and overall growth.

Foods to avoid:

Refined sugar: Sugar causes inflammation in the body which results in weaker immunity. Sugar damages the protein in our body, resulting in ageing of organs, which further compromises immunity, growth and functioning. Greatest source of sugar in the average kid’s diet are sugary snacks and beverages like cookies, cakes, candies, fruit juice, soda, and sports drinks. Everything that the child picks up to eat today has strains of added sugar in some form or the other.

Preservatives: most of the packaged food companies are adding artificial preservatives to delay spoilage and contamination in foods.  artificial preservatives such as nitrates, benzoates, sulfites, sorbates, parabens, formaldehyde, BHT, BHA and several others can cause serious health hazards such as hypersensitivity, allergy, asthma, hyperactivity, neurological damage.

Refined oil: The high temperature involved in the refining process removes all the natural and beneficial substances from the oil, which is not good for the digestive as well as respiratory health and ultimately affects your immunity.

5 foods being the reason of weight gain & GROWTH in children

Everyone has probably heard the rhyme “chubby cheeks, dimple chin,” and the gist of it is that everyone loves chubby kids. One of the most difficult problems for any mother is ensuring that her children acquire weight in a healthy manner. However, parents are worried about their children getting obese in the face of the global pandemic, while many parents are still hunting reason of weight gain or weight-gain recommendations for their children such as weight gain baby food.

how to promote healthy weight gain in children?

Every parent should understand the difference between gaining weight and gaining a healthy weight. In today’s world, children are more likely to consume processed and refined foods that are readily available. However, they serve no nutritional purpose other than to fill their bodies with unhealthy empty calories. As a result, the children have a poor appetite and are unable to fulfil their body’s daily nutritional requirements.

As children grow at a steady speed, they require special attention to support and encourage healthy development while also fulfilling their energy requirements. Nutrition for children follows the same principles as nutrition for adults. So, here are some of the things you can do to help your child acquire weight while also maintaining a healthy and active body.:

  • Provide nutrient-dense foods that are rich in essential fats, carbohydrates, proteins, fibre, vitamins, and minerals.
  • Reduce drinks at mealtimes to increase children’s consumption of nutritious foods (which being the reason of weight gain).
  • Offer four or five little meals rather than three large meals and encourage a few healthy snacks throughout the day.

Which food is good for weight gain in children?

Nuts:

Nuts like peanuts, almonds, cashew and hazelnuts contain healthy fats. They are also a great source of protein and dietary fibre, along with a pack of a number of vitamins and minerals. They are high in calories and hence nuts and nut butter is absolutely the right choices if you are looking for some foods that support active growth and healthy weight gain in kids.

Seeds:

Seeds like pumpkin, melon and sunflower are high in fat, mono and poly-unsaturated fats that add healthy calories for overall growth and weight gain. Vitamin E, antioxidants, magnesium, zinc, potassium, and vitamin K are all abundant in them. Pumpkin seeds solve dietary deficiencies, while sunflower and melon seeds boost metabolism and aids in digestion. Melon seeds are also a good source of zinc and it helps to boost our immunity, helps in digestion and overall growth and development.

Herbs:

Since time immemorial, herbs like ashwagandha, mulethi, turmeric, shallaki, and brahmi have been shown to aid in weight gain and boost brain, immune, and bone development. Ashwagandha and Mulethi aid digestion and nutrition absorption and encourage the growth of healthy bacteria in the intestine. Ashwagandha enhances bone mineral density, which in turn increases overall body mass. Brahmi and turmeric help to keep digestive issues at bay. Shallaki is rich in carbohydrates and calcium, thus helping in bone growth and improves appetite.

Antioxidants – Vitamin E and rosemary extract:

Antioxidants, such as vitamin E, help to keep cells healthy by fighting free radicals. Rosemary extract is high in iron, calcium, vitamins A, C, and B6, and is commonly used to treat digestive issues and a lack of appetite. Antioxidants can be found in a variety of foods, including vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and herbs and spices.

Millet

Jowar flour is a great source of protein, unsaturated fats and dietary fibre, packed with B Vitamins, minerals like iron, magnesium, calcium, zinc, potassium and phosphorus.  It also contains antioxidants. The high dietary fibre content eases digestion in kids and improves their appetite. Ragi is loaded with protein, calcium, fiber, vitamin B2, vitamin B6 and it is the food for kids to gain weight. With around 130 calories per ½ cup, it also strengthens the bones, teeth and aids digestion. Ragi can be given as ragi porridge, kheer or in the form of flat bread. (How does whole grains manage menstruation pain?)

Refined sugar: Excess sugar increase the caloric content without providing any nutritious benefit. Moreover, sugar damages the protein in our body, resulting in ageing of organs, which further compromises immunity, growth and functioning. Greatest source of sugar in the average kid’s diet are sugary snacks and beverages like cookies, cakes, candies, fruit juice, soda, and sports drinks. Everything that the child picks up to eat today has strains of added sugar in some form or the other.

7 foods that helps in speech disorder/ delay in kids

That first word from your baby’s tiny mouth takes away all the pains of your sleepless night. There is no word that can describe the euphoria you feel when your baby recognizes you  and for the first time says mamma. It’s a milestone that feels like magic. however these days many kids suffer from speech disorder/delay. Lot of parents have plenty of questions about their child’s developing speech skills. Like when do babies utter their first word? When can they hold a conversation?

When do babies start talking?

As like other milestones, the age at which baby’s start talking words or sentences may vary. Some start saying words at 9 month while other may start at 1 year. Babies generally archive About 50% of the speech development at around 2 year of age and 75% by 3 years.  Following are the milestone that demonstrates normal speech development:

Birth to 6 months:

A child starts his/ her life with a cry which is a non-verbal communication, and with time starts coos in response to you or your smile. At 4 months your baby will like to babble or even copy your sounds. The sound of cries changes for different needs  whether the baby is  crying out of hunger or in pain.

6 to 12 months:

From 6 months onward the baby try to communicate by action or gestures. Starts recognizing their name, turns and looks at new sounds. Til 12 months baby start making sounds like ma-ma-ma-ma or ba-ba-ba-ba and other similar long sounds. He or she may start to combine his talking with gestures such as pointing to what he or she wants, shaking his or her head to mean ‘no’ or waving ‘bye bye’. In some cases babies start to say proper one words like mama, baba, papa etc. or try to repeat the words he/ she hears  from you.

12 to 18 months:

At this age babies start to follow instructions and understand far more words than he/she can speak. At around this age the Baby starts to recognize common objects like bottles, cups and plates. Body parts like nose, tummy, ears and mouth etc. also their belongings like recognizing  their toys . You will notice your child learning new words every day such as ‘mummy, daddy, ball, teddy, biscuit’, depending on which words he hears often . However the pronunciation may not be very clear at this stage.

18 months to 2 year:

Most of the toddlers  will start making short sentences like I want that, mummy come here, I need milk. Sounds and words will be copied more accurately. Also kids start enjoying rhymes by trying to repeat the lines or actions. By the end of 2nd year your baby may recognize about 200 words and try to make sentences with those words.

2 to 3 year:

The vocabulary keeps on growing. Their speech become more clear or you should be able to understand 75% of what your toddler says. This is the stage where they can tell you about their needs like water, milk or food, also they tell you if they need to go to the toilet. Generally pre-school begins at this age and kids are ready to learn numbers, colours and alphabets.

3 to 5 years:

Their vocabulary reaches upto 500 words. Now they are ready for a simple question and are more expressive through their words.they can tell the short story or if you ask what you did today at school? they should be able to tell you in small sentences. Being correctly using plurals, pronouns and propositions. By the end of 5 year usually they can carry on conversion.

Speech disorder and delay

Language development of the child is an important aspect in a child’s overall growth and development. But speech and language problems are the most common developmental delay a child faces. Similarly, The speech development of a child means verbal expression or the way words are spoken. Whereas the language development of the child refers to a broader concept of expressing, receiving and comprehending information.

  • Learning disability
  • Exposure to more than one language
  • Premature birth
  • Brain injury or trauma
  • Hearing loss
  • Autism
  • Apraxia of speech, a disorder where a child faces difficulty sequencing and executing words

  • Read stories to your child daily. Encourage them to talk to you about the plot and characters, ask them how they think a character could behave, let them ask questions whenever they feel like they’re simply learning how to express themselves.
  • Don’t miss any opportunity and use everyday situations to create communication. Keep on telling the name of different objects around the house.
  • Explain what you are doing as you are cooking, dish washing or cleaning or engage them by saying let’s do this or that.
  • If you are not watching the television, turn it off. The excess background noise can cause delays in the formation of words
  • Let the child lead the conversation.
  • Ask a lot of daily questions and give time to your child to answer questions.
  • Give lots of praise and positive reinforcement while also correcting, instead of criticizing the child for not saying the word properly.
  • Encourage you baby to use straw for drinking or just to blow air through it. This helps the child to develop the oral muscles used for speech.
7 Foods to manage speech disorder/delay

Without the brain, there would be no language. The human brain has a few areas that are specific to language processing and production. Adding foods that support brain development can help to improve language development.

Pumpkin seeds are high in magnesium, copper, and much higher in zinc than other seeds, which help in increasing concentration and memory. One of the easiest to feed brain boosting foods for kids.

OMEGA 3 FATTY ACIDS:

This would increase their focus and attention, while keeping them calm and distressed.
