healthy eating food

Do you find your little ones always munching or snacking something like chips or cookies? Are they really fond of junk foods that make you worried about their health? Keep reading to find out how to help kids break bad eating habits and develop healthy eating food habits in kids.

WHATSAPP for concerns like Speech Delay, Low Weight, Frequent Illness, Hyperactivity, Low Concentration, Weak Eyesight, Improper Sleep, Pigmentation, Pores, Face Marks, Fine Lines , Lactation etc.

Why do kids go for Junk food?

According to the National Diet and Nutrition Survey, 92% of kids consume more saturated fat than is recommended, 86% eat too much sugar, 72% eat too much salt, and 96% don’t consume enough fruits and vegetables. Nowadays, Kids are considerably more aware of the options available on the market that suit their tastes than they were a few years ago. While playing games on their parent’s phones or watching TV, kids notice advertisements for new foods being offered at their favourite fast-food places. The benefits of their three healthy meals will be compromised if they snack on unhealthy foods, thus this habit needs to be broken as soon as possible.

tips to DEVELOP healthy eating FOOD routine

Here are some tips you can take to get your kid back on the right track if they indulge in more unhealthy food than is necessary.

1. Healthy Snacks option:

Start with opting for a healthy snack instead of junk food. Give your little one a bowl full of fruits topped with some honey and dry fruits. You can also add some whipped cream and strawberries to make it tastier and more colourful.

Also check, Gut healthy Foods

2. Follow the schedule for snacks too:

When meals and even snacks have a regular, time and plan, a healthy routine is established. If your kids eat whenever they feel like it, they can overeat since they won’t be hungry when it’s time for a meal.

3. Positive Environment:

Having family meals together creates a positive environment and allows kids to pick up healthy eating habits by observing others in the family.

4. Be a role model:

By observing the people and environment around them, children can learn a lot. Therefore, if they observe you eating unhealthy meals, this will set a bad example. Maintain a healthy eating food diet as much as you can and set a better example for your children. Teach them of the advantages of a healthy diet.

5. Restrict screen time:

Children who watch television often consume more than they actually need, which raises the possibility that they may grow up to be obese and make poor eating choices.

6. Stop using junk as a bribe:

Stop using junk food as a bribe, if you want your kid to do some chores. This will inculcate a mindset where the kid will think that he needs to act good to get what he wanted and will have a very unhealthy relationship with the food. Kids shouldn’t associate good behaviour with eating calorie-dense, unhealthy meals.

7. Keep your kids hydrated:

Your toddler may occasionally be motivated to get a snack solely out of boredom rather than actual hunger. Many times, giving them a glass of water during snack time will be sufficient to satisfy their appetite.

8. Go on shopping together:

Taking your children shopping and teaching them how to read labels and choose nutritious and healthy eating food helps to introduce healthy eating food habits in them at a young age. They will be able to discriminate between what is healthy and what is bad for their health, and these children will grow up to be mindful eaters.

9. Become creative:

Limiting or cutting down on junk can initially upset the kids. Therefore, to make up for it, be creative in how you give wholesome snacks and meals. Give them fruits and veggies cut in different shapes or make a cartoon out of it. Decorate it with some honey, dry fruits, cream or cheese to make it look more appetizing.

10. Start practising a healthy lifestyle

Just as much as they require a balanced diet, growing children also require the recommended amounts of sleep. Poor sleep directly influences food choices because it disrupts the rhythm of the hormones ghrelin and leptin, which can decrease appetite. Similarly, sitting idle can cause them to develop food cravings. Therefore, instead of allowing your children to play video games, set out some time in your schedule to take them outside to play.

Popcorn or Makhana- the better snack for Kids

Giving healthy snacks to kids every time when they have cravings in between meals is the toughest job for every mother. By handing over a pack of chips, sugary cookies and cold drinks we miss the chance to feed them something healthy and nutritious. In this article we will discuss which is healthier of the two snacks: Popcorn or Makhana (lotus seeds) and will see who wins the race in being more nutritious.

Popcorn: What makes a movie perfect? The answer is popcorn. Whether it is in the theatre or at home, movies are incomplete without popcorn. They are considered as one of the healthy snacks for kids. It has ample dietary fiber and low calorie count. Popcorn is also a good source of polyphenols, an antioxidant that helps in better blood circulation and digestive health. And is considered to be a food that can aid in weight loss too. Although always remember that vending-machine popcorn is not just high in calories but also in sodium. Air-popped would be a good way to prepare popcorn.

Makhana (Lotus seeds): Makhana or lotus seeds are grown in Asian countries and considered as a power food. It is an excellent source of many important nutrients. Moreover, it is loaded with protein, fiber, calcium, magnesium, iron, phosphorus and carbohydrates. It also contains antioxidants like gallic acid, chlorogenic acid and epicatechin, which reduces inflammation, helps to neutralize harmful free radicals and prevent oxidative stress. To sum up, makahan and popcorn both are healthy snacks options. Its a kind of co win situation for you to offer these healthy snacks to your kids.

Makhana (Lotus Seeds) vs. Popcorn

Amongst many minerals and vitamins that contribute towards brain development and function, a few are Manganese, Vitamin B6 and B9. They are abundantly present in Makhana.

  • Just a cup of Makhana is enough to meet 50% of Manganese requirements for the day.
  • It is those rare snacks which are loaded with a good balance of B vitamins, 5 times that of popcorn.
  • Makhana has 1/4th of the calories of popcorn. This gap is huge in the limited amount of calories a child can be fed. Every calorie a child consumes should be loaded with nutrients and not be an empty calorie.
  • Not just Brain, Makhana also supports strong bone development of a growing child.

Hence we can say that if we have to choose between Popcorn or Makhana as a healthier snacks for kids, Makhana wins over many folds in nutrition. However, popcorn is not an unhealthy snack option, but Makhana is definitely more nutritious and healthier. So next time when you are watching a movie or otherwise, offer your kids roasted makhana. They will surely love this crunchy healthy snack.

Health benefits of Makhana:

Strengthen bones:

Calcium is crucial for bone development and strengthening, especially for kids in growing years to have strong bones for lifetime. In addition to this, Makhana being high in calcium helps kids in bone development and adults in bone strengthening.(Foods that help build strong bones?)

Gluten free:

This superfood is gluten free, which means if you are gluten intolerant or somebody who avoids gluten foods, can enjoy it without worrying about the reactions. (Foods that can help with allergies?)

Weight loss:

Loaded with sufficient amounts of protein, this healthy snack for kids helps to stay full for longer and prevents overeating. Also low in calories, makhana is an ideal food for weight loss. Moreover, the fiber in it moves slowly through your digestive tract to keep you feeling full for a long time. (Foods that can help with weight control?)

Helps in cognitive function:

Makhana have high thiamine content, which helps with sustaining the cognitive function of the nerves and contributes to the process of neurotransmission. (Brain developments foods for kids?)

Better digestion:

The high fiber contents of makhana aids in digestion and keeps the bowel movement regular. The antioxidant properties of makhana make them even better for digestion. It also helps in prevention of excessive and frequent urination. (How to fix gut health?)

Improve heart health:

Makhana is the great source of magnesium, which significantly improves the quality of blood and oxygen in the body and reduces the risk of heart diseases. Makhana is high in potassium and low in sodium, which keeps the blood pressure level in check. (How to keep the liver safe from fatty liver disease?)

Good for skin

Makhana contains several amino acids, which help promote skin elasticity and skin health. Also the antioxidant properties in it help fight free radicals, thus they act as an anti-ageing agent. Since Makhana is high in a natural flavonoid called kaempferol, it helps to keep away the signs of ageing such as hair loss, graying of hairs and formation of wrinkles. So it is not only good for kids but for adults too. (Remedies and foods to avoid rashes in skin?)

To conclude we can say that Makhana and popcorn both are healthy but Makhana has more nutritional benefits than popcorn.

Healthy Foods to increase weight of kids

“Chubby cheeks, dimpled chin”, everybody must have heard this rhyme, and it’s essence is that chubby babies are everyone’s favorite. Healthy weight gain in children is one of the biggest challenges for every mother and what are some healthy foods to increase weight. However, during the ongoing pandemic around the globe parents are worried about obesity due to lack of physical activities in kids. But still there are many parents looking for tips on weight gain for their kids or baby food for weight gain.

Gaining weight or gaining healthy weight are two different aspects. In today’s era  kids are more prone to processed and refined foods which are easily available. But they don’t have any nutritional purpose other than just adding unhealthy empty calories to their body. If your baby is thriving properly, is active, happy and doesn’t fall sick frequently, there should not be a cause of concern. However, it is also important to keep a check on your baby’s weight to height ratio at regular intervals, as he/she may suffer from development delays because of being underweight for a long period of time. In that case it becomes imperative to work on their weight with a diet that is nutritionally rich and well balanced. If your baby is not gaining weight according to their age or their weight to height ratio is not ok, look for the reasons for that.

WHATSAPP for concerns like Speech Delay, Low Weight, Frequent Illness, Hyperactivity, Low Concentration, Weak Eyesight, Improper Sleep, Pigmentation, Pores, Face Marks, Fine Lines , Lactation etc.

Feedback from parents

Reasons for not gaining weight:

  • Not consuming enough calories
  • Poor appetite
  • Food intolerance and food allergies
  • Poor eating habits and eating disorder
  • Metabolic disorder
  • Genetic issues

  • Sometimes few medications also lead to loss of appetite resulting in poor weight gain

Tips for healthy weight gain:

Physical activity: Encourage your child for physical activities. Indulge them in some sports like swimming, cycling and running which can help to increase their appetite.

Balanced diet: Focus on a healthy, well balanced, nutritious diet instead of just thinking about weight gain. food for kids to gain weight should be nutrients-rich, energy-dense with adequate amounts of protein and carbohydrates. Small meals: Try to give 4 to 5 small meals, despite feeding 3 bigger meals. Also add 2 to 3 healthy snacks which may include fruits, nuts and seeds. They are the best baby food for weight gain. These in-between healthy snacks can help your kid to take in more calories than by eating three bigger meals.

Limited drinks: Hydration is important for kids. But drinking liquid just before or during meals can affect your kid’s appetite and make them eat less. Studies have shown that drinking water prior to meals can reduce calories intake. (Impact of sugar on the body?)

Proper sleep: Proper sleep is utmost important for kids in their overall development. A decent night sleep can make a positive impact on your child’s entire day and on their appetite also. (Link between sleep and brain)
