White spots on kid’s face: causes and remedies

White spot on the face is the most common skin problem among kids. It can be caused by a variety of conditions, including allergies and nutritional deficiencies. White patches on the skin usually appear when the skin protein or dead cell becomes trapped under the skin’s surface. Depigmentation can also be the reason.

Generally white spots are not a reason to worry or concern, but still it is important to get it checked by a dermatologist, to know the causes or treatment.

WHATSAPP for concerns like Speech Delay, Low Weight, Frequent Illness, Hyperactivity, Low Concentration, Weak Eyesight, Improper Sleep, Pigmentation, Pores, Face Marks, Fine Lines, Lactation etc.

Causes of white spot on kid’s face

Mineral and Vitamin deficiency:

We are what we eat. We all know the importance of a balanced and nutritious diet, but kids being fussy eaters miss the required nutrients, as a result they suffer from mineral and vitamin deficiencies and white spots on their face can be one of them. Deficiencies in calcium, vitamin D and vitamin E can cause white patches on the skin.

Vitamin B12 is responsible for the production of melanin in the body. Deficiency in this vitamin can also lead to white spots.

Tinea versicolor:

Tinea versicolor is the common fungal infection of the skin. It  is a skin condition characterized by patches of lighter or darker skin. This is caused by a type of yeast (fungus) that is found on most people’s skin. It is generally not harmful and isn’t contagious. They are especially common on the back, chest, neck and/or arms. They may occur on the face as well, particularly in children. People who have a weakened immune system are generally more susceptible to infections. People who live in a humid or hot climate are affected more. Exposure to the sun can make these patches even worse.

Pityriasis alba:

Pityriasis alba is a common skin disorder of patches of light-colored (hypopigmented) areas. The cause is unknown  but usually appears during summers and the humid season may be linked to atopic dermatitis (eczema). The disorder is most common in children and teens. They are mostly located on the face, arms, and upper trunk and are more noticeable in people with darker skin types. Starts with red, scaly, itchy patches. These patches eventually heal and leave behind faint, white spots.

Worm Infection

This reason is still under research. Some people claim the white patches are due to worms in the stomach. Though this reason is not sure, you can still deworm your kids once in a while. (How to deworm kids naturally?)

Tips to prevent white spot on kid’s face:

You can prevent your child from white spots on face simply by following these tips’

  • Always make sure that your child is applying a broad spectrum sunscreen before going out in the sun.  It’s better to use sunscreen as recommended by a doctor. (How to apply a sunscreen?)
  • Give your child a balanced diet to meet their daily nutritional needs. So that they do not suffer from any deficiency. (what is a balanced diet for kids?)
  • However there is no study to prove the impact of worms on white spots on the face, no harm to get your baby deworm every 6 months.
  • Make sure the face is not oily and sweaty, wash the face with a mild foaming cleanser and clean it often with cold water, at least 2 to 3 times a day.
  • If these white patches are due to some fungal infection, then use antifungal cream as prescribed by the doctor.
  • Some pediatricians may also advise using non-perfume and non-dye emollients. This will prevent dry skin which might sometimes lead to Pityriasis Alba.

However these white spots on the face or Pityriasis Alba is a self-limiting disease and is likely to disappear on its own. There is no specific treatment for white spots, but if the affected area have severe itching or whitish patch has changed color to reddish and is also spreading, it’s better to consult your pediatrician or dermatologist

Foods that may help to prevent white spot on face

There are certain foods that you must include to your child’s daily diet to avoid white spots on face of kids

CALCIUM:

Deficiency of calcium not only can cause white spots on the face but also results in weaker bones. It is really important to get strong bones and we get a chance to build them only once – throughout childhood and adolescence. Children who get enough calcium in childhood start their adult lives with the strongest bones possible. Mostly calcium is stored in bones and teeth where it supports their structure and hardness, but the body also needs calcium for muscles to move and for nerves to carry messages between the brain and every body part. Calcium is predominantly found in milk and milk based products like cheese. And is also found in smaller quantities in some nuts and seeds. (Should kids take whey protein?) Moreover, few herbs such as shallaki also contain calcium.

Vitamin D:

Every single cell in the body requires this Vitamin D. Body can also produce this through cholesterol exposure to sunlight. However, deficiency of Vitamin D is common in kids and along with white spots results in weaker bones and muscles, fatigue, depression, body pain, and extreme hair loss (alopecia). Vitamin D too has to be consumed with fat (oil). For e.g. Cheese has vitamin D and fat both, so it’s a great food supplement for children to meet this nutrition.

Vitamin E:

It is an important vitamin that also acts as a powerful antioxidant, which helps to protect the body against damage caused by free radicals (pollution, lifestyle, stress, processed food).Vitamin E is a fat soluble vitamin which can be stored in the body. It is rarely found deficient in kids who eat nuts, seeds and greens. This vitamin is vital in protecting against any infections and damage to eyes, skin, and brain and enables regeneration of cells to keep organs healthy and active.

Vitamin B12:

Vitamin B12 deficiency can cause white spots on face. It is also known as Cobalamin is important for the production of blood cells and melanin in the body to sustain healthy nerve cells in the body. Apart from white spots on the face, vitamin B12 shortage can also lead to a number of symptoms including weakness, exhaustion, constipation, a decreased appetite, and weight. Failure to meet the minimum requirements can also have negative effects on the nervous system and can lead to mental illness such as confusion, depression and dementia. The main food sources of vitamin B12 are Dairy products, fish, meat, beef liver, and fortified cereals.

Home remedies for white spot on face

Ginger:

It has anti-inflammatory  antibacterial, antiviral properties that make it an excellent home remedy for healing skin discoloration. Cut a slice of ginger and place it on the affected area. Let it sit there until the ginger dries. Repeat this one to two times a day till a few weeks to see the results.

Tulsi:

Tulsi is an important herb and every household should have it. With its antibiotic and excellent antifungal properties, it kills the fungi that cause discoloration. Make your child chew 2 to 3 leaves daily to see positive results in a few weeks.

Coconut oil:

Coconut oil applied to the skin is an anti-inflammatory that will encourage the growth of new pigment. It protects your skin from the harmful UV radiations by acting as a barrier between your skin and the radiations. This acts as a natural sunscreen as few studies have stated that it can block about 15-20% of the sun’s UV radiation

Copper pot:

If you eat more copper (by using copper pots) you can aid in the production of melanin which may help prevent future melanin loss. Cooking in copper is not advisable when it comes to salty and acidic food since they react with the metal but eating in these is useful .

Why Deworming in kids is necessary? 7 foods that help

Every parent wishes to give their child a better environment and a healthy life. But Presence of worms in the stomach or intestine of your kid can shatter this wish of yours. Deworming in kids is necessary as these worms badly affect the growth and development of kids.(How to help your baby in growth and development?) The main cause behind this issue is unclean environment which takes a serious toll on the kids’ health. The World Health Organization stated that “soil transmitted helminth (STH)  infections are among the most common infections in humans, caused by a group of parasites commonly referred to as worms, including three main types that are roundworms, whipworms and hookworms.

These intestinal worms can severely affect the child’s nutrition and growth. ”For food and survival, these worms reside in the human intestine where they produce thousands of eggs every day. Consumption of vegetables grown in contaminated soil and drinking or washing hands with polluted water or playing in ground where soil carries these worms and pets with infections are some of the potential sources from where your child can get these worms.

Awareness

There is an increased number of awareness worldwide about deworming for children. It is important to identify the symptoms in children so that you can prevent growth deficiency and infant mortality. Certainly from the age of two, you should deworm your child regularly. At least once every six months deworming in kids is important. Children with worm infestations need repeated deworming because this can help your child to increase his/her nutritional uptake. (Nutrition for kids) If it is ignored, these worms are able to form cysts in the liver and lungs which can lead to pneumonia and some neurological disorders. (How to take care of your kids liver health?) So, it is really important to keep a close check on your kids to figure out the symptoms as early as possible and start deworming kids accordingly.

Why deworming in kids is important?
  • It helps in boosting immune system
  • Helps control infections
  • Keep the child active and healthy
  • Boost growth and development
Symptoms that your child is affected by these worms
  • Feeling hungry every time
  • Complaining sore tummy
  • Diarrhea
  • Loss in weight and loss of appetite
  • Anemia
  • Itching in anal region
  • Constipation
  • Blood in stool
  • Frequent urination
  • Irritating itchiness, Rashes in buttocks
  • Fatigue and lethargy
  • Coughing
Effects of worms on kids overall well being

These intestinal worms affect kids in several ways. Anemia is the most common effect as these worms feed on host tissues, including blood which results in loss of iron and protein. (How to overcome iron deficiency?) Children often suffer from malnutrition because these worms interrupt the process of absorption of nutrients through the small intestine. (What is the required nutrition for kids?)

Some safety measures

Children who are exposed to an unclean environment and are in direct contact with soil are more likely to have these intestinal worms. In addition to that dirty hands, toys, and tools are easy instruments for transmission of these parasites through hands to mouth and at the end they enter the body and intestine. Some precautionary measures should be taken to prevent your kids from these worms such as:

  • Keep the surroundings clean
  • Develop cleaning habits among kids
  • Don’t allow kids to play barefoot in grass and mud
  • Ensure that kid is using clean swimming pool
  • Wash fruits and vegetables properly before consumption
  • Never use Fruit and vegetable that has infested part
  • Don’t allow your child to drink water from contaminated tank
  • Never serve semi cooked meat and vegetables.

10th February is celebrated as National Deworming Day in India. It aims at eradicating the intestinal parasites and to prevent malnutrition among children in the age group of 1- 19 years. There are some medications provided to deworm kids and all of them are safe to use. But it’s always better if one could find some natural ways to get rid of these worms. There are some foods and fruits that may help in deworming kids naturally.

Foods to get rid of intestinal worms
Pumpkin seeds:

Pumpkin seeds are used as a traditional remedy to treat intestinal parasites. They are rich in an amino acid called cucurbitacin. Recent study has also shown that pumpkin seeds can help in parasite removal- especially tapeworms. (Pumpkin seeds millet crackers recipe) So, pumpkin can help to deworm your kid.

Papaya seeds:

Papaya seeds contain a variety of essential micronutrients. It has strong anthelmintic and antiamoebic properties which mean they have the ability to kill intestinal parasites in your digestive tract. A study found that papaya seeds with honey have a positive impact on removal of intestinal parasites. You can mix papaya seeds powder with honey in warm water and can give the child empty stomach in the morning for better results. (Importance of liver health) Therefore, not only papaya but its seeds are also very useful.

Garlic:

Garlic has some very effective antiseptic and anti parasite properties that helps to destroy intestinal worms and their eggs. It not only kills the existing eggs but also prevents female pin worms from laying more eggs. Regular use of garlic can help to prevent oxidation caused by parasite toxins. (How to increase breast milk production?) Thus, Garlic plays an important in the process of deworming in kids.

Turmeric:

Beta-carotene has ability to destroy the eggs of intestinal worms. Eating it raw after washing properly can is best home remedy for deworming kids. Carrot scrapes the mucus which is home for these parasites and helps to push away these worms out of the intestine. (Foods and recipes for 6 months old baby) Therefore, carrot is considered as one of the best foods for deworming kids.

Giloy:

Giloys also work as a good de-worming agent. It is a shrub and an essential herb in ayurvedic medicines. Giloy is used to treat a wide range of health conditions. It contains important plant compounds like terpenoids, alkaloids, lignans, and steroids. Research shows that these compounds have antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antidiabetic properties which not only helps in boosting immunity, but Giloy stem can also help improve digestion, reduce constipation, acidity, gas and bloating. It works well for people with a weak digestive system.

Food to Manage Hormone Imbalance

Food choices can directly impact hormone in the body. Consuming refined or processed carbs like white flour, bread, pasta, pizza, white rice can directly increase the blood sugar in the body and ultimately results hormone imbalance. On the contrary, foods which are whole grains like amaranth, buckwheat, barley or other high fibre foods can control the spike in blood sugar and manage stress by making hormones happy. Fiber rich foods are suitable to beat stress as they release a brain calming chemical called serotonin in the body.

In addition to fibre, research has found that intake of Magnesium can help manage stress, anxiety and hormone imbalance in kids. Magnesium is responsible for nerve transmission and nerve-muscle coordination. It protects against the excessive excitement in a child (which can be traumatic). There is enough research going on how Magnesium can help in fixing or preventing neurological disorders and hormone imbalance.

WHATSAPP for concerns like Speech Delay, Low Weight, Frequent Illness, Hyperactivity, Low Concentration, Weak Eyesight, Improper Sleep, Pigmentation, Pores, Face Marks, Fine Lines , Lactation etc.

MAKE Hormone HAPPY

Traditionally, if we look back centuries ago, Sendha namak or Epsom salt has been used to heal, relax and calm the body nerves. Epsom salt is actually not a salt but a mineral called Magnesium sulfate. Soaking body or feet in this mineral enables absorption of decent quantity through skin which results in relaxing nerves and muscles.

Studies indicate that roughly 50% kids don’t meet the daily Magnesium requirement. Magnesium is one of the top four abundant minerals in the body. So, any deficiency of this mineral will easily reflect in daily life as it results in hormone imbalance. Magnesium is key in formation of bones, maintaining blood flow, keeping stress low and to make hormones happy. It also brings relief to girls who suffer from menstrual cramps, leg cramps and irritable mood. (Puberty in girls)

For kids who deal with Asthma, which is on a rise due to hazardous air quality levels, magnesium can help. This Marvelous mineral has calming effects and hence aids in reducing hyper activity and lack of focus in kids. Daily intake of magnesium is necessary to maintain stock of the mineral in the body. Including magnesium rich foods in diet is best way to balance hormones with supplements based on foods.

Also check, Fruits to fix hormone imbalance

Food to Manage Hormone Imbalance

Spinach, beans, chia seed, sunflower seed, cumin, whole wheat flour, milk, yogurt, almond, peanut, cashew, quinoa are great sources of this mineral. Just 1 wholewheat roti/ paratha can meet 15% daily requirement of this mineral. In addition, 10 almonds or cashews will give 10% and 1 cup spinach will give 20%. However, a diet high in processed food can cause excretion of Magnesium through urine.

  • Magnesium also helps to absorb Vitamin-D in our body, which in turn helps to absorb Calcium in our bones. Hence, lack of this powerful mineral will directly result in weaker bones, teeth, hair and nails. Weaker bones (lethargy) further adds to irritation and stress in kids.
  • Migraine is one of the most common neuro disorders which too has shown improvement with the consumption of Magnesium.
  • Anxiety and Depression have impacted hundreds of millions of people across the world. Dietary intake of magnesium has been offered as a possible treatment, in addition to therapy.

So Yes! Magnesium is vital for every kid. Next time when your child has some tired muscles or cramp, use the magnesium salt with water to dip their feet in and let that table salt be on the table only!

Calcium Containing Foods: Must For Building Strong Bones

From being in the womb to enjoying your retirement, this one mineral is incredibly vital to our overall health. Especially important for adolescents who are building bones rapidly. Teens are growing fast and gaining height so their Calcium needs are also high. However, invariably they are most deprived because they switch from milk to non-dairy beverages (e.g. coke, ice-teas etc) and munch a lot of salty foods (e.g. chips, fries, pizza etc). Caffeine and soda lead to calcium loss from the body. Comfort-foods (high in sodium) is the other robber of calcium. At this point of time they badly need calcium containing foods in their diet to meet the required amount of this mineral. Read here to know more.

99% of the Calcium is stored in Bones and Teeth. If calcium is needed elsewhere, it is taken from the Bones. Hence it becomes imperative to keep 100% stock of calcium and consume it every day. The more bones will lend calcium, the weaker they will become. It is said that Osteoporosis is a disease that manifests in old age.

We only build bones until mid-20s and hence it becomes crucial to build strong bones and teeth to last us a lifetime.

Calcium containing foods
Milk & dairy products

Milk, cheese and yogurt are a rich source of calcium and are the most widely used calcium rich foods in India and other countries for kids. They are good for children who don’t have any milk allergies. In case your child has allergies to dairy products, then you should look for non-dairy foods rich in calcium. (Foods to prevent allergies in kids)

Moringa

Moringa is a superfood. It has 3 times more calcium than milk which makes it an excellent food to treat weak or damaged bones and also one of the best non-dairy sources of calcium. Some studies also indicate that moringa can heal damaged bones thus making it a must have calcium rich foods for bones. (Foods and remedies for cold and flu in kids)

Ragi

Ragi is also one of the foods which is very high in calcium. It is said that no other plant source can provide calcium the way ragi can, making it one of a popular non-dairy calcium rich foods in India. It is a whole grain that is gluten free also and can be used in baking cakes and cookies.

Vegetables

Cabbage, mustard (sarson leaves), broccoli & ladyfinger are a good source of calcium. (How to retain vitamin A and C in food?)

Seeds

Many seeds are good sources of calcium. For instance, 1 tablespoon (9 grams) of poppy seeds has 13% of the recommended daily intake, while the same serving of sesame seeds packs 9% of the recommended daily intake. In addition to calcium, chia seeds are also rich in omega 3 fatty acids. (List of seeds to eat everyday)

Almonds

Amongst all the nuts, almonds are the highest in calcium. One ounce of almonds or about 22 almonds, provides 8% of the recommended daily intake of calcium. (Top 6 benefits of almonds for kids)

Lotus seeds/ Makhana

Makhana or lotus seeds are grown in Asian countries and considered as one of the best calcium containing foods. Makhana is an excellent source of many important nutrients. It is loaded with protein, fiber, calcium, magnesium, iron, phosphorus and carbohydrates. Just a bowl of makhana is a great snack for kids. (Easy to make Makhana ice cream recipe)

Amaranth

In addition to calcium, Amaranth is a good source of folate and very high in certain minerals, including manganese, magnesium, phosphorus and iron. One cup (246 grams) of cooked amaranth grain delivers 116 mg of calcium, or 12% of the recommended daily intake.

Potassium rich food

If the child eats lots of comfort-food, then consuming Potassium rich foods (banana, spinach, cucumber, peas, sweet potato) will save Calcium from being robbed from the bones.

Calcium & Vitamin D

Calcium always works together with Vitamin-D and Magnesium. So, foods high in these nutrients are necessary to be included in your kid’s diet like dairy, whole grains, nuts, greens. (Panchamrit benefits for digestion)

What micronutrients are good for your child?

foods for vitamins and mineralsinerals

We know that there are two food groups namely macronutrients and micronutrients. But what micronutrients are good for the child and which are the food sources for micronutrients? As we all know that every food we eat gives us energy…CALORIES. And this calorie can come from Protein, Fat or Carbs– which are the broader nutrition giving sources- Macro nutrients. After the food is consumed, it breaks down further into smaller nutrients like vitamins, minerals and antioxidantsMicro nutrients.

What micronutrients are good for the child?

Micronutrients broadly consists of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. And since these are required in smaller amounts as compared to macronutrients, hence these are called micronutrients. While the food will always contain macronutrients (Protein, Fat and Carb), it will not always contain large amount of micronutrients (vitamins, minerals and antioxidants). Hence, the deficiency of any can be damaging for our body. Moreover, a diet in processed food, for example, is very low in micronutrients. However, foods for vitamins and minerals like vegetables, fruits, nuts, grains, berries, seeds is extremely high in micronutrients and therefore more beneficial for the health of our bodies.

VITAMINS,MINERALS AND ANTIOXIDANTS:

Vitamins are important for various processes and maintenance of the structure of skin, bone, nerves, eye, brain, blood. And vitamins are either water-soluble or fat-soluble. Leafy vegetables, animal products, nuts & seeds, vegetable oils, dairy foods are rich source of fat-soluble vitamins. Whereas nuts & seeds, fruits, vegetables, grains, milk and dairy foods are a great source of water-soluble vitamins. (What foods have which vitamins?)

Minerals include calcium, iron, sodium, phosphorus, magnesium, chloride and Sulphur. Nuts, seeds, shellfish, chicken, eggs, beans, cocoa, avocados, berries, yogurt and cheese are rich in minerals. (What are some vitamins and minerals for bones?)

Antioxidants are compounds produced in your body or naturally found in some foods that scavenge or neutralize the effects of cell damage by potentially harmful molecules known as free radicals. These Free radicals are highly unstable molecules that are naturally formed when you breathe or when your body converts food into energy. Walnuts, raisins, apple, orange, dark chocolate, turmeric, beetroot and ginger are rich in antioxidants.

As we can see, foods for vitamins and minerals are very important to meet the required micronutrients for the day. If you are deficient in any of the vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, your doctor might prescribe supplements.
