Headache is one of the most common complaints in children and adolescents . A headache is the pain in the area of the head, neck or face. It can affect any part of the head or may be present in one or several locations. Types of headache

The headache in kids can be divided into two type, based on the reasons of headache

Primary headache :

The reason for primary headache is not related to any specific health condition or when the head pain itself is the main problem and not due to any health condition. Primary headache also includes:

  • Tension headache: It is the most common type of headache in kids triggered by stress, lack of sleep, mental or emotional conflicts.
  • Migraines: Migraine pain is usually more severe, which is often felt on one side of the head. It  can run in families.  While they can be painful and disruptive at the time, migraines are not usually a serious problem, and they are not life-threatening. Migraine headaches may be caused by changes in brain chemicals or nerve signals.
  • Cluster headaches: This is the headache on the one side of the head that happens in groups or clusters.  This type of headache comes in groups or periods. Most people who get cluster headaches have one or two cluster periods each year. A cluster period might last 1 month or longer.
Secondary headache:

when  headache is the symptom of any other health condition like brain injury, eye stain, viral infection and dehydration.

Seizure Disorder: Types, Symptoms and Foods That Can Help

A seizure disorder represents the uncontrolled, abnormal electrical activity of the brain that may cause changes in the level of consciousness, behavior, memory, or feelings. Sometimes it may go simply unnoticed and in some serious cases it may result in unconsciousness and convulsions.

The brain consists of nerve cells that communicate with each other through electrical activity. A seizure occurs when one or more parts of the brain has a burst of abnormal electrical signals that interrupt normal brain signals. Anything that interrupts the normal connections between nerve cells in the brain can cause a seizure including head injuries, infections, poisoning or even brain development problems prior to birth. Though, often a cause for the seizures and epilepsy cannot be found. But when a child has 2 or more seizures with no known cause, this is diagnosed as epilepsy. TYPES OF SEIZURE disorder

There are mainly two types of seizures:

1. Generalized Seizures: It means sudden abnormal electrical activity throughout the brain. it includes some subtypes:

  • Tonic- clonic: in this the body get stiff and you may stop breathing for a moment. The person may feel tired after a tonic-clonic seizure
  • Absence seizure: when a person lose awerness briefly. It may last for few seconds.
  • Febrile seizure:  febrile seizure is a convulsion in a child that’s caused by a fever. The fever is often from an infection.

2. Partial Seizures: Partial seizures means abnormal electrical activity in just one part of the brain. This can spread to other parts as well and includes partial seizure, complex partial seizure and secondarily generalized seizure.

Some seizures are very short, lasting only a few seconds, while others can last a few minutes. A doctor will typically diagnose a child with epilepsy (also called a seizure disorder) if:

  • The child has one or more seizures
  • The doctor thinks the child is likely to have a seizure again
  • The seizure was not directly caused by another medical condition, like diabetes or a severe infection
Symptoms of seizures:

Symptoms of seizure disorder may differ from person to person depending upon the type of seizure, but generally it includes following symptoms:

  • Sudden jerks in arms
  • Strange feeling
  • Sudden blackout & fainting
  • Stiffness in muscles
  • Twitching or trembling of muscles
  • Confusion
  • Sweating or nausea
  • Staring into space
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Emotional symptoms
When to see a doctor:

One should immediately connect with the doctor in the following cases:

  • The seizure last for more the five minutes
  • Having high fever
  • Second seizure follows immediately
  • Injury during the seizure
  • doesn’t regain consciousness after seizure
  • Pregnancy
  • A person having seizure has diabetes

WHAT CAUSES Seizure IN KIDS?

Though a clear cause of seizure is not known, the most common cause is an injury to the brain. Other causes include:

  • Abnormal level of sodium or glucose in the blood
  • Infections such as meningitis and encephalitis
  • Brain tumor
  • Stroke
  • Any kind of brain damage
  • Prenatal injury
  • Drug abuse
  • Electric shock
  • Epilepsy
  • Genetic conditions resulting in brain injury such as tuberculosis.

HOW TO DIAGNOSE Seizures IN KIDS?

Initially, your doctor will review symptoms and medical history of the patient and run several tests to diagnose this condition:

  • Neurological examination: To review patient’s behavior, motor abilities, mental function and the type of seizure.
  • Blood tests: To diagnose the signs of infections, genetic conditions, or other conditions that may be associated with seizures.
  • Electroencephalogram(EEG): To diagnose epilepsy in which doctors attach electrode to patient’s scalp with paste like substance. These electrodes record electrical activity of brain and help to diagnose the type of seizure.
  • Computerized tomography scan (CT): To check the cross sectional images of brain which helps to reveal abnormalities in brain which are responsible for seizures.
  • Functional MRI (fMRI): To measure the change in blood flow that occurs in specific parts of the brain and to detect the exact locations of critical functions such as speech and movement.
  • Positron emission tomography (PET): A small amount of radioactive material is injected into vein that helps to visualize active areas of brain and detect abnormalities.
  • Neuropsychological tests: To assess patient’s thinking, memory and speech skills and to find out which area is more affected.

TREATMENT OF Seizures IN KIDS:

Treatment for seizure disorder usually begins with medication. Not every child responds to treatment in the same way, so there is no one “right treatment.”

1.SEIZURE-PREVENTION DRUGS

There are many seizure-prevention drugs, called anti-epilepsy drugs (AEDs) or anticonvulsant drugs, in the market. However, it sometimes takes a while to find the one that works best for each child. These drugs do not change the brain’s underlying susceptibility to produce seizures. Rather, they only treat the symptoms of epilepsy by reducing the frequency of seizures. The medication will not work properly until it reaches a certain level in the body, and it is important to maintain that level. For this reason, it is especially important to follow the doctor’s specific medication instructions.

2. OTHER TREATMENTS:

  • Brain surgery
  • Medical devices to prevent and control seizures
  • Dietary therapies (e.g. ketogenic diet, modified Atkins diet, low glycemic index treatment)

3. AYURVEDIC HERBS FOR seizure IN KIDS:

In Ayurveda, Epilepsy is called Apasmara (Apa = loss, smara = memory, knowledge, or even consciousness). Akshepaka is a condition characterized by seizures. An imbalance of the Vata dosha in Ayurveda creates convulsions. Likewise, an imbalance of Pitta dosha creates loss of consciousness in terms of doshic effect. BRAHMI:

CURCUMIN:

In addition, Preclinical studies have indicated its beneficial effect for the treatment of seizures disorders. Moreover, the molecule has an anti-seizure potential in preclinical studies, including chemical and electrical models of acute and chronic epilepsy.

SHALLAKI:

Some side effects of seizures medicines include decreased bone mineral density. This condition is called osteoporosis. Shallaki, also known as Boswellia Serrata, is very beneficial to support bone health and also stress management. Maintenance of bone stability is a difficult task but is also essential for the maintenance of overall health and well being of a person. Bones not only work as the frame for body structure but also help maintain the nervous systems in the anatomy. MULETHI:

Foods That Can Help In Cerebral Palsy (CP)

Cerebral palsy is the group of disorders that affects muscle tone, movements and coordination.  In CP the brain is not fully developed to properly send messages to different parts of the body or the movements are not well coordinated. This  affects a person’s ability to control his or her muscles. According to a study, it affects at least 1.5 to 4 out of every 1,000 children worldwide.

The symptoms of CP vary from person to person, but generally all have problems with movement and posture. Some people have severe symptoms and few have mild symptoms. Some common symptoms are as follows

Symptoms of Cerebral Palsy

Developmental delay: Early signs of cp include delay in development like rolling, crawling, sitting and walking.

Movements and coordination: Lack of balance and muscle coordination. Muscles are either too stiff or too floppy. The child might also use one side of the body more than the other when reaching, crawling, or moving. Also they might have Difficulty with fine motor skills, such as buttoning clothes or picking up utensils.

Cerebral palsy does not get worse with time. However it takes time to realise the exact symptomes.

Different types of cerebral palsy

There are mainly 4 different types of Cp with slightly different symptoms. 

1. Spastic cerebral palsy:

It is the most common form of CP. 80 % of people suffering from CP has this type. The muscles of people with spastic cerebral palsy feel stiff and their movements may look stiff and jerky. Spasticity is a form of hypertonia, or increased muscle tone. This results in stiff muscles which can make movement difficult or even impossible. It can affect the entire body or just one part of the body.

2. Dyskinetic cerebral palsy:

People with dyskinetic CP have trouble controlling muscle movements. The movements can be slow and writhing or rapid and jerky. They can make it difficult for the affected person to walk, sit, swallow, or talk.

3. Ataxic cerebral palsy:

It is the least common type of Cp. People with ataxic cerebral palsy have trouble with balance and coordination. They may have difficulty walking and performing fine motor functions, such as grasping objects and writing.

4. Mixed cerebral palsy:

Few people have a combination of all the types of cerebral palsy. This is called mixed cerebral palsy.

Causes of cerebral palsy

Surgery: Orthopedic surgery may be used to relieve pain and improve mobility. It may also be needed to release tight muscles or to correct bone abnormalities caused by spasticity.

Other therapies: Other types of treatment for CP may include therapies like speech therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy and counselling.

There are many ways that can impact the nutrient absorption process. This is why even if you are eating nutrient-rich foods, you might not be getting all the nutrients.

By using below mentioned tips and ways you can help your child reap the benefits of nutrients and improve nutrient absorption through foods.

1.Pairing of foods: 

The benefit you get from certain foods depends to the great extent how you combine certain foods. Pairing foods wisely can increase the absorption of different types of nutrients and also promote the overall health.These are some food combinations which increase the nutrient absorption from the food.

  • Fat soluable vitamins and fat(oil): To enhance the absorption of fat soluble vitamins like Vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E and vitamin K, it is important to consume it with fat (oil). For example, Palak (Spinach) is a great source of Vitamin A (carotenoid). However, cooking it lightly in some fat/oil helps for maximum absorption of this nutrient. When you gently heat the food, the carotenoid releases in the fat/oil, helping in better absorption of these vitamins . Even when you are taking any of its supplements, you should take it with a fat-containing meal. Study reveals that when these Vitamin rich foods are cooked without oil, their absorption is 60% less.
  • Iron and vitamin C: Inorder to maximise the absorption of iron from plant based sources( non heme iron) it is required to pair it with vitamin C. The vitamin C helps break the iron down into a form that the body can more easily absorb. So the next time you eat spinach salad or diced apple or iron rich fruits don’t forget to squeeze lemon or orange juice.
  • Vitamin D and calcium :One of the most important minerals in our body is CALCIUM. Vitamin D helps the body to absorb calcium and works with it to build strong bones. It moves calcium from the intestine to the bloodstream and into the bones. 
  • Complementary proteins: There are only a few foods that contain all the amino acids that your body needs. These are called complete protein and are mostly obtained from animal sources. But if you are a vegetarian, then most of the plant based protein sources are incomplete. But by pairing incomplete proteins together, you can create a complete protein source. For example rice and black beans, hummus and whole-wheat crackers, quinoa and corn, and whole-wheat bread and peanut butter. 
2. Foods best to eat raw:

Eat most of the water soluble or heat sensitive nutrients raw. Heat breaks down some nutrients like vitamin B1, B5 and C, folate, so to absorb them maximum, eat it raw. For example, raw spinach contains 3 times more vitamin C than cooked spinach. Some of these foods are sunflower seeds, peas, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, oranges, lemon etc.

3. Foods best to eat when cooked:

Generally a wide range of nutrient loss from cooking. But there are few foods which provide the most nutrients when cooked. For example when we cook red /orange/ yellow vegetables like carrots, tomatoes, sweet potatoes there is a significant increase in the bioavailability of beta carotene found in them. Research shows that lycopene increases by 25 percent when tomatoes are boiled for 30 minutes.

4. Soaking and sprouting: 

Dal, rice, beans, nuts, seeds and other whole grains contain phytic acid. Soaking for a few hours before you cook helps to break down the phytic acid which makes it easy for the body to absorb all the nutrients and also digest the food better. Study shows that grains contain arsenic, a compound found in earth‘s crust. By soaking the grain prior to cooking, the arsenic level can come down by 25-30%. Almost all the whole grains, nuts and legumes are high in fiber, B vitamins, iron, zinc and magnesium and protein. Studies show that sprouting may increase these nutrient contents even more.

5. Eat probiotic and prebiotic:

Almost all of the nutrients that we get from foods are absorbed by our gut. So for a healthy gut you should include probiotics and prebiotics in your diet.
