11 proven foods for proper digestion.

Eat right and digest well!

What we eat determines how well our digestion works. Digestion is amongst the most common concerns in kids today. Child’s gut is responsible for the child’s overall health. It is connected to the child’s immune system, mood, mental health and body functioning.  Most of the diseases emerge in the gut, which is a component of a child’s digestive system. Digestive tract is responsible for absorbing nutrients and eliminating waste. Food plays an important role in digestion. Probiotics, prebiotics and fiber rich food for good digestion should be included in diet from beginning.

Digestion means breaking down food into nutrients, which is further used by the body for energy, growth and cell repair. If you want to set your child up for a lifetime of good health, it is essential to flourish the child’s digestive system with healthy bacteria.  Symptoms of digestive problems include diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain, bloating, gas and constipation. All of them negatively affects your child’s growth and development.

Fiber

Digestive issues are primarily due to the food choices and not taking fiber rich food. Most of the meals nowadays comprises easy-to-consume options. Mostly include plain roti, yellow dal, potato, bread, white rice, pasta, cake, soup, noodles, cookies. While these food choices don’t lack nutrition entirely (if made at home). But they do miss out on an essential macronutrient- Fiber. Fiber is the non-digestible carbohydrate. It is responsible for keeping our digestion healthy and regular. Lack of fiber rich food in diet may cause constipation, which is a nutrient deficient disease. The usual cycle of digestion is between 1 to 1.5 days. However, with the current food choices, this time has become 4 days. So even though your child may be regular, he might still be 4 days late (constipated).

Preventive measures to improve the digestive system of kids:
  • Introducing small meals
  • Chewing food slowly and carefully
  • Fiber rich seasonal fruits and vegetables
  • Intake of plenty of water to cleanse child’s digestive system
  • Enough sleep helps to rejuvenate the child’s digestive system
  • Reduced processed foods

Foods to avoid
Processed food:

High consumption of ultra-processed food and low consumption of fiber and vegetables results in an unhealthy gut. Most of the processed food contains a lot of sugar, artificial colors, flavours and unhealthy fats which have diverse and less healthy gut flora. White spots on kid’s face: causes and remedies

White spot on the face is the most common skin problem among kids. It can be caused by a variety of conditions, including allergies and nutritional deficiencies. White patches on the skin usually appear when the skin protein or dead cell becomes trapped under the skin’s surface. Depigmentation can also be the reason.

Generally white spots are not a reason to worry or concern, but still it is important to get it checked by a dermatologist, to know the causes or treatment.

Causes of white spot on kid’s face
Mineral and Vitamin deficiency:

We are what we eat. We all know the importance of a balanced and nutritious diet, but kids being fussy eaters miss the required nutrients, as a result they suffer from mineral and vitamin deficiencies and white spots on their face can be one of them. Deficiencies in calcium, vitamin D and vitamin E can cause white patches on the skin.

Vitamin B12 is responsible for the production of melanin in the body. Deficiency in this vitamin can also lead to white spots.

Tinea versicolor:

Tinea versicolor is the common fungal infection of the skin. It  is a skin condition characterized by patches of lighter or darker skin. This is caused by a type of yeast (fungus) that is found on most people’s skin. It is generally not harmful and isn’t contagious. They are especially common on the back, chest, neck and/or arms. They may occur on the face as well, particularly in children. People who have a weakened immune system are generally more susceptible to infections. People who live in a humid or hot climate are affected more. Exposure to the sun can make these patches even worse.

Pityriasis alba:

Pityriasis alba is a common skin disorder of patches of light-colored (hypopigmented) areas. The cause is unknown  but usually appears during summers and the humid season may be linked to atopic dermatitis (eczema). The disorder is most common in children and teens. They are mostly located on the face, arms, and upper trunk and are more noticeable in people with darker skin types. Starts with red, scaly, itchy patches. These patches eventually heal and leave behind faint, white spots.

Worm Infection

This reason is still under research. Some people claim the white patches are due to worms in the stomach. Though this reason is not sure, you can still deworm your kids once in a while. (How to deworm kids naturally?)

Tips to prevent white spot on kid’s face:

You can prevent your child from white spots on face simply by following these tips’

  • Always make sure that your child is applying a broad spectrum sunscreen before going out in the sun.  It’s better to use sunscreen as recommended by a doctor. (How to apply a sunscreen?)
  • Give your child a balanced diet to meet their daily nutritional needs. So that they do not suffer from any deficiency. (what is a balanced diet for kids?)
  • However there is no study to prove the impact of worms on white spots on the face, no harm to get your baby deworm every 6 months.
  • Make sure the face is not oily and sweaty, wash the face with a mild foaming cleanser and clean it often with cold water, at least 2 to 3 times a day.
  • If these white patches are due to some fungal infection, then use antifungal cream as prescribed by the doctor.
  • Some pediatricians may also advise using non-perfume and non-dye emollients. This will prevent dry skin which might sometimes lead to Pityriasis Alba.

However these white spots on the face or Pityriasis Alba is a self-limiting disease and is likely to disappear on its own. There is no specific treatment for white spots, but if the affected area have severe itching or whitish patch has changed color to reddish and is also spreading, it’s better to consult your pediatrician or dermatologist

Foods that may help to prevent white spot on face

There are certain foods that you must include to your child’s daily diet to avoid white spots on face of kids

CALCIUM:

Deficiency of calcium not only can cause white spots on the face but also results in weaker bones. It is really important to get strong bones and we get a chance to build them only once – throughout childhood and adolescence. Children who get enough calcium in childhood start their adult lives with the strongest bones possible. Mostly calcium is stored in bones and teeth where it supports their structure and hardness, but the body also needs calcium for muscles to move and for nerves to carry messages between the brain and every body part. Calcium is predominantly found in milk and milk based products like cheese. And is also found in smaller quantities in some nuts and seeds. (Should kids take whey protein?) Moreover, few herbs such as shallaki also contain calcium.

Vitamin D:

Every single cell in the body requires this Vitamin D. Body can also produce this through cholesterol exposure to sunlight. However, deficiency of Vitamin D is common in kids and along with white spots results in weaker bones and muscles, fatigue, depression, body pain, and extreme hair loss (alopecia). Vitamin D too has to be consumed with fat (oil). For e.g. Cheese has vitamin D and fat both, so it’s a great food supplement for children to meet this nutrition.

Vitamin E:

It is an important vitamin that also acts as a powerful antioxidant, which helps to protect the body against damage caused by free radicals (pollution, lifestyle, stress, processed food).Vitamin E is a fat soluble vitamin which can be stored in the body. It is rarely found deficient in kids who eat nuts, seeds and greens. This vitamin is vital in protecting against any infections and damage to eyes, skin, and brain and enables regeneration of cells to keep organs healthy and active.

Vitamin B12:

Also known as Cobalamin is important for the production of blood cells and melanin in the body to sustain healthy nerve cells in the body. Apart from white spots on the face, vitamin B12 shortage can also lead to a number of symptoms including weakness, exhaustion, constipation, a decreased appetite, and weight. Failure to meet the minimum requirements can also have negative effects on the nervous system and can lead to mental illness such as confusion, depression and dementia. The main food sources of vitamin B12 are Dairy products, fish, meat, beef liver, and fortified cereals.

Home remedies for white spot on face
Ginger:

It has anti-inflammatory  antibacterial, antiviral properties that make it an excellent home remedy for healing skin discoloration. Cut a slice of ginger and place it on the affected area. Let it sit there until the ginger dries. Repeat this one to two times a day till a few weeks to see the results.

Tulsi:

Tulsi is an important herb and every household should have it. With its antibiotic and excellent antifungal properties, it kills the fungi that cause discoloration. Make your child chew 2 to 3 leaves daily to see positive results in a few weeks.

Coconut oil:

Coconut oil applied to the skin is an anti-inflammatory that will encourage the growth of new pigment. It protects your skin from the harmful UV radiations by acting as a barrier between your skin and the radiations. This acts as a natural sunscreen as few studies have stated that it can block about 15-20% of the sun’s UV radiation

Copper pot:

If you eat more copper (by using copper pots) you can aid in the production of melanin which may help prevent future melanin loss. Cooking in copper is not advisable when it comes to salty and acidic food since they react with the metal but eating in these is useful .

10 best proven home remedies for fever in kids

With every season change, parent’s biggest concern is their kid’s health and how to protect them from fever, cold and cough. Fever is common in children of all age group, no matter how careful you are. Young children are prone to falling ill because their immune systems are not strong enough to fight  toxic air and seasonal allergies.

Fever itself is usually not harmful, in fact it helps the body’s immune system fight off infection. Fever is a defense against infection, it raises the temperature of the body to kill the germs. By increasing the body’s temperature, a fever makes it harder for the bacteria and viruses to survive in the body and cause infection.

What considered as fever:

Many parents complain that their baby’s head is warm most of the time and their feet and palm are hot. Do they have a fever?

Children are considered to have a fever if they have a body temperature of 38.5°C (101.3°F) or more, and babies less than three months old are already considered to have a fever at a body temperature of 38.0°C (100.4°F) or more. Use a reliable digital thermometer to confirm a fever.

Causes of fever in kids

When the child has fever, the doctors are more concerned about what is causing the fever, and not what the child’s temperature is. Fevers can be caused by a few things, including

  • Infection:

Most of the fever is caused by infection or other illness for instance, a common cold, middle ear infection, urinary tract infection (UTI) or gastroenteritis. Fever helps the body to fight this infection by raising body temperature to kill the germs.

  • Vaccination:

Generally after vaccination kids get a slight increase in their body temperature. Child’s immune system is developing antibodies to fight the germs that the vaccine aims to protect them from.

  • Dehydration:

Dehydration caused by severe vomiting or diarrhea or they haven’t had enough fluid and their body is dehydrated. This also causes fever in some cases.

  • Sunburn /sunstroke:

Sunburn, sunstroke or heat stroke may also causes fever in some cases

  • Food allergies or intolerance:

Food allergies or intolerance like lactose intolerance and gluten intolerance may also cause fever in some cases.

Symptoms of fever and when to see a doctor

Generally you can tell that a child has a fever just by looking at them. Typical signs include a red face, tired-looking or glazed eyes and otherwise pale skin. A hot forehead or neck can also be a sign of fever. Some children lose their appetite or cry a lot.

You should consult a doctor if child has following symptoms:

  • Their temperature is above 39°C (102.2°F) or a baby under three months old has a temperature above 38°C (100.4°F)
  • The fever last longer than three days
  • Vomiting and refuses to eat or drink anything
  • Have diarrhea or pain in their belly (home remedies for diarrhea in kids)
  • They have skin rash
  • Stiff neck, are unresponsive, restless or confused
  • More sleepy than usual
  • Problems with breathing
  • They have a febrile seizure (fit)
  • Seem be getting more unwell

Seeing your baby in uncongottable in fever is a difficult thing and you do everything to give them comfort during fever. Taking proper care at home can help your baby to recover fast and regain their energy. Below are some home remedies and foods that can help your baby with fever.

Avoid drinks with caffeine, including colas and tea, because they can make dehydration worse by increasing urination.

5 foods that help your child in sleeping well

Is your child facing difficulty in falling asleep? Do they often wake up multiple times during the night? Are they getting the recommended amount of sleep according to their age? Do you think your child is not sleeping well because of anxiety issues?

A proper night sleep is one of the most important factors in your kids overall development and an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. A decent sleep can make a positive impact on your child’s entire day. When your body does not have enough rest or sleep you may feel cranky and irritated but when it comes to kids, the effects of sleep deprivation (insufficient sleep) can lead to numerous developmental issues. Kids need to get enough night sleep so they can achieve their necessary growth milestones, play, learn and perform well. Not just for routine chores, but also for the brain to function at its best, it has to be well rested.

Studies have shown that kids who regularly get adequate amounts of sleep have improved attention, behaviour, learning, memory and most importantly, mental and physical health. Sleep disorder leaves a negative impact on brain development. Most of a baby’s brain development happens during night sleep. 10 days of 6 hours sleep, leads to a 400% dip in concentration. Most of the kids don’t get enough sleep as they are often busy with school, studies, sports and other activities.

Kids who sleep less can suffer from:
  • Crankiness or irritation
  • Mood swings
  • Lack of interest, alertness and motivation
  • Academic struggles
  • Trouble in concentrating
  • Headache from lack of sleep (Yes! this happens in kids too)
Foods to help kids in sleeping well
Nuts

Nuts like almonds, walnuts, pistachios and cashews are often considered to be a good food source for sleep. They contain melatonin (sleep hormone) as well as magnesium, vitamin B6, protein and zinc. Magnesium is helpful in promoting sleep because of its ability to reduce inflammation (body heat). The level of stress hormone cortisol, which is known to interrupt sleep, can be reduced by including nuts in your diet. (What nuts are easy protein sources?)

Pumpkin seeds

A study published in 2005 in Nutritional neuroscience suggested that consuming tryptophan alongside a carbohydrates source is one of the best ways to treat sleep deprivation. Pumpkin seeds may be small but they are packed with valuable nutrients. They are rich in healthy fats, magnesium, fiber, antioxidants and zinc. If your kid has trouble sleeping, give a few pumpkin seeds before bed with small amounts of carbohydrates such as a piece of fruit. It may be beneficial in providing the body with tryptophan needed for melatonin production, which can lead to better sleep. For younger kids, powdered pumpkin seeds can be an option.

Chamomile:

Chamomile is considered to be a safe and effective way to help a child relax. It’s a dried flower. These flowers are white and yellow and look like beautiful little daisies. Native to Europe and Asia. For centuries, it has been used for medicinal purposes to calm the mind and mildly induce sleep. It Improves relaxation and relieves stress, reduces anxiety, promotes sleep and relieves insomnia.

Lemon balm:

Lemon balm extracts: A Phytomedicine Compound Improves Symptoms of Hyperactivity, Attention Deficits, and Impulsivity in Children. As per the study conducted by NIH, The fraction of children having strong/very strong symptoms of poor ability to focus decreased from 75% to 14%, hyperactivity from 61% to 13%, and impulsiveness from 59% to 22%. Parent rated social behavior, sleep and symptom burden showed highly significant improvements. (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24837472/)

Antioxidants:

Pure Cocoa powder (unsweetened) contains brain boosting components as it is packed with a large number of antioxidants molecules, the main is epicatechin which is helpful to improve cognition in studies. Hence, cocoa powder is also an important brain development food for children.

SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH ON INGREDIENTS FOR SLEEP, ANXIETY, HYPERACTIVITY

Foods to avoid

Refined sugar: Sugar has been shown to increase restlessness at night and nighttime awakenings. The insulin helps your body to break down the sugar and convert it into energy at a time when your body needs to rest. As a result, you may end up feeling overstimulated and restless due to the excess energy. In a recent study, scientists offered strong evidence that sleep and sugar don’t mix. Moreover, sugar damages the protein in our body, resulting in ageing of organs, which further compromises immunity, growth and functioning.

Preservetives: Most of the packaged food companies are adding artificial preservatives to delay spoilage and contamination in foods.  Artificial preservatives such as nitrates, benzoates, sulfites, sorbates, parabens, formaldehyde, BHT, BHA and several others can cause serious health hazards such as hypersensitivity, allergy, asthma, hyperactivity, neurological damage.

Refined oil: The high temperature involved in the refining process removes all the natural and beneficial substances from the oil, which is not good for the digestive as well as respiratory health and ultimately affects your immunity.

How to feed all these foods to kids?

Now the question arises- how to include all these bitter Ayurvedic herbs, nuts, seeds and antioxidants in your child’s diet?

10 Most effective home remedies for diarrhea in kids

Diarrhea is something which bothers every parent, as it drains too much fluid and makes your little one feel weak. It is a digestive problem that causes loose and watery stool, three to four times a day. Diarrhea in kids is a common condition, which can lead to dehydration or even more serious problems.

Diarrhea  is common in all age groups of kids and is unavoidable because you can’t stop them from playing and getting infected. Infection from viruses like rotavirus, bacteria like salmonella and rarely parasites like giardia are the most common causes of diarrhea in kids.

Causes of Diarrhea in kids.

The suspected causes of diarrhea in kids are:

  • Virus, commonly called stomach flu.
  • Bacterial infection
  • Food intolerance like lactose intolerance or gluten intolerance
  • Food allergy
  • Reaction to medicines.
  • Weaker digestive system.
Symptoms of diarrhea in kids:

Diarrhea can be acute or severe, where acute diarrhea lasts for not more than a week. Severe or prolonged diarrhea lasts longer and  has many other signs. Symptoms of diarrhea in kids may vary from child to child. Generally the symptoms may include.

  • Upset stomach
  • Loose and watery stool
  • Abdominal pain
  • Vomition
  • Bloating
  • Cramping
  • Bloody stool
  • Dehydration
  • Loss of appetite

When to consult a doctor?

Mild symptoms of diarrhea can be treated at home. However, if your child develops any of the below mentioned symptoms, consult your pediatrician.

  • If diarrhea persists for more than a week.
  • Vomiting along with diarrhea.
  • Severe stomach pain.
  • Increase in the baby’s body temperature more than 101 degree Fahrenheit.
  • Blood in stool.
  • If the baby is losing weight.
  • If there are symptoms of dehydration in a baby.
Tips for diarrhea in kids:

Rehydration: Rehydration is the process of restoring lost water or fluid to the body. The World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF recommended Oral Rehydration Salt (ORS) as essential for clinical treatment of acute diarrhea. ORS treats dehydration caused by severe diarrhea through the replacement of lost fluid, salt, sugar, potassium and other nutrients. Ask your doctor about what type and quantity of ORS to be used.

Maintain hygiene: The most important thing is to maintain a hygienic surrounding. Keep every belonging of your child clean and properly sterilized as far as possible. Proper handwashing can help prevent diarrhea.

Developing immunity: To boost up your kid’s immunity to fight infections just stick to nutrient rich foods, probiotics and follow their vaccination schedule.

Home remedies and foods to overcome diarrhea

Besides keeping your baby hydrated, it is also important to take care of their diet. Offer small meals to your baby at regular intervals. Foods rich in carbohydrates help to maintain the energy level of the body during diarrhea. Potassium rich foods are also important, which may be lost in large quantities through diarrhea. Here is the list of foods that you can offer to your baby during diarrhea:

1.Sugar salt solution:

The body loses a lot of sugar and salt during diarrhea, which is the main cause of dehydration in kids. The first home remedy for diarrhea is homemade sugar salt solution. Boil one liter water let it cool, now add one teaspoon of salt and 8 teaspoons of sugar. Give this solution in regular interval. This is an excellent remedy to keep your baby hydrated during diarrhea.

2.Banana:

It is best to give during diarrhea as it helps to harden the stool. Banana is the rich source of potassium, which helps to balance electrolytes lost due to frequent loose motions. It is a rich source of iron and fiber which contributes to a healthy digestive tract. It is a superfood which can be used as a complete plant to treat digestion. (How to use banana stem in food everyday?)

3.Buttermilk:

Buttermilk is rich in calcium, vitamin D, vitamin B12, protein, carbohydrates and low in fat. It has great probiotics properties that help to increase the production of good bacteria in the digestive tract, which improves kids gut health, boosts immunity and prevents acidity. 4.Boiled potato:

Potatoes are easy to digest and best to give your baby during diarrhea as it is high in carbohydrate and provides adequate energy that is lost during loose motion.

6.Nutmeg:

Nutmeg or Jaiphal has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, which helps to reduce microbial infection and reduces intestinal inflammation. It also has anti-secretory components which helps to reduce the loss of fluid from the body during diarrhea. You can make the powder by rubbing nutmeg on the stone grinder. Give your baby a pinch of this powder with some water. This is also great to treat cold and cough. (Foods and remedies to help with cold and flu)

7.Ginger juice:

Ginger has antibacterial properties that help heal internal infections. This is a reason why ginger juice stands to be effective in treating diarrhoea in children. Add some grated ginger to 500ml of boiling water. Drain the water and let it cool . give sip of this drink to your child throughout the day

8.Lemon juice:

While suffering from diarrhoea, a glass full of lemon juice can help ease the symptoms by neutralising the acids in the stomach and countering bacterial infections.

Suspected Causes for Autism: 10 foods that may help

Autism or Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder that affects communication and behavior. Although autism can be diagnosed at any age, it is said to be a “developmental disorder” because symptoms generally appear in the first two years of life. There are many causes for autism in kids and symptoms may vary from child to child. In some kids the symptoms are very mild while in certain cases severe symptoms are high.

Around 50% of the parents of children with autism notice signs by the time their child reaches 12 months and the remaining notice problems by 2 years. Children with ASD may have symptoms throughout their lives, but it’s possible for them to get better as they get older. Based on the most recent report, ASD is estimated to affect about 1 in 54 children, with boys being more likely to have ASD than girls.

Symptoms of autism spectrum disorder:

Kids with Autism have difficulty with social communication, interaction and behavior.  Here is the list of behaviors that are noticed in children diagnosed with Autism.  These Symptoms may vary from person to person.

1) Social communication and interaction

Children with autism find it difficult to interact with people. This is one of the most common symptoms of ASD. You might notice these signs by the age of 10 to 12 months. Other social skill symptoms may also include:

  • Give no response or little response when someone calls their name.
  • Less or no eye contact.
  • Don’t like cuddling or holding. They don’t stretch their arms to be picked up.
  • They prefer to be alone.
  • Difficulty in speaking or speech delay. (Tips to improve speech delay)
  • Their words generally don’t match with their facial expression and gestures.
  • Speak with unusual tones like robotic, flat or singsong voices.
  • Can’t start a conversation or be a part of one.
  • Often speak on their favorite subject without noticing that others are not interested or without giving others a chance to respond.
  • Doesn’t express their feelings and emotions.
2) Behavioral symptoms

Children with autism spectrum disorder may have repetitive patterns of behavior. Some of the common behavioral symptoms are as follows:

  • Repetitive behavior like repeating words or phrases, hand flapping or rocking.
  • Aggressive behavior. Perform activities that could cause self-harm.
  • Easily get upset with slight changes in a routine.
  • Lack of coordination and confidence.
  • Eat only specific foods or are generally fussy eaters.
  • Having overly focused interests, such as with moving objects or parts of objects
  • Over sensitivity to touch, light and sound.
  • Impulsiveness. Usually act without thinking.

Kids with ASD may also find it difficult to sleep. Despite so many challenges, they may have some strength, like they have an ability to learn things in detail and remember information for a long period of time. They are also strong visual and auditory learners.

Causes for autism:

However the exact causes for Autism is still unknown. There is no single cause, research shows that genes and environment can act together to affect the child’s development in the may that leads to ASD. Some most suspected causes or risk factors for  Autism include.

  • Having a sibling with ASD.  When one child is diagnosed with ASD, the next child to come along has about a 20% greater risk of developing autism than normal.
  • Research shows that older parents have a greater likelihood of having a child with autism.
  • Kids with certain genetic conditions such as Down syndrome, Fragile X syndrome and Rett syndrome are most likely to have ASD.
  • Exposure to heavy metals and environmental toxins.
  • Low birth weight.
  • Premature birth and maternal use of valproic acid or thalidomide during pregnancy can also be one of the causes for autism.
Diagnosis:

If you notice any of the above symptoms mentioned above , you must go for a proper diagnosis as recommended by the doctor. While there is no specific laboratory test to determine autism, a team of child psychologist, occupational therapists and speech pathologist do screening and evaluation which may include:

  • Medical exam like blood test, hearing test
  • Gathering information about the symptoms that exist, and from when these symptoms started.
  • Whether these symptoms are affecting their day to day life, or they find it difficult to socialize.
  • Family history of ASD.
  • May also involve interviews or questionnaires for family members, teachers and others close to the child to know the causes for autism
Treatment and therapies:

While there is no cure for ASD, currently available treatments can help reduce symptoms and improve functioning. Treatments include medication, psychotherapy, education or training, or a combination of treatments.

  • A doctor may use medication to treat some symptoms like irritability, aggression, repetitive behavior, hyperactivity, anxiety and attention problems.
  • Behavioral, psychological, educational, or skill-building therapy to build self confidence.
  • Speech-language pathologists are therapists who specialize in treating language problems and speech disorders. They are a key part of the autism treatment team.
  • Find an autism support group. Sharing information and experiences can help children with ASD and/or their caregivers learn about treatment options and ASD-related programs.
Healthy ASD diet for kids:

It is very important to feed kids a nutritious diet from the early years itself, even more important if the child is suffering from ASD. Along with the treatment and therapies a healthy ASD diet for kids including essential nutrients is must, which may help in reducing the symptoms. Experts say whatever is good for the brain is likely to be good for ASD and speech delay. Below is the list of essential nutrients and foods recommended as a part of a healthy ASD diet?

Protein:

Protein is an important part of a healthy diet. It builds, maintains and repairs body tissues. It is also essential for brain health and plays an important role in producing neurotransmitters (brain chemical). It’s also integral in forming enzymes and hormones in the body. From digestion to immunity, from hair to nails, everything requires protein. Some foods rich in protein are: nuts and seeds, egg and dairy products.(how to get a protein rich diet?)

Omega 3 fatty acids:

Research has established a link between omega 3 fatty acids and brain development in early childhood. These healthy fats have amazing brain boosting power and play a vital role in enhancing memory and attention span. Fish & walnuts are a very good source of omega 3. (Why is Omega 3 important for your kids?)

Magnesium:

In our body, Magnesium is responsible for nerve transmission and nerve-muscle coordination. In other words, it protects against the excessive excitement in a child (which can be traumatic). There is enough research going on how Magnesium can help in fixing or preventing neurological disorders. Banana, avocado, pumpkin seeds and spinach are some food sources of magnesium.(what are some disorders in which magnesium can help?)

Zinc:

Zinc is considered an essential nutrient which means that the body cannot produce or store it. For this reason, it is very important to add zinc in your daily diet. Zinc is required for proper brain function and development, immune function, protein synthesis, wound healing. Some food sources rich in zinc are: nuts, pumpkin seeds, spinach, chicken, shrimp and kidney beans. (How can zinc help with hair and skin health?)

NUTS:

All the nuts like almonds, walnuts, cashew, peanuts and hazelnuts are rich in vitamin E and help in boosting memory. They are also antioxidants which protect against cell damage. Walnuts are rich in omega 3 fatty acids and are a valuable substance for brain function, memory and thinking abilities. This fatty acid also encourages cognitive functions. ( best nuts for protein)

Seeds:

Apart from nuts, seeds like flex, chia, melon, sesame and pumpkins also contain powerful antioxidants like vitamin E that protect the brain from free radical damage. Sunflower seeds impact overall mood and mental processing powers and therefore it is considered a brain boosting snack. Pumpkin seeds are high in magnesium, copper, and much higher in zinc than other seeds, which help in increasing concentration and memory. One of the easiest to feed brain boosting foods for kids.

COCOA POWDER:

Pure cocoa powder (unsweetened) contains brain boosting components as it is packed with a large number of antioxidants molecules, the main is epicatechin helpful to improve cognition in studies. Hence cocoa powder is also an important brain development food for children. (More benefits of cocoa powder)

Ashwagandha:

Ashwagandha is an adaptogen. It is known to reduce anxiety and stress. Moreover, it increases acetylcholine levels which support better memory, mental focus and intelligence. Ashwagandha also improves communication between nerve cells and stimulates the body’s capacity to heal any nervous system damage.

Brahmi:

Brahmi is a superfood for the brain and is believed to sharpen the brain by protecting cells and increasing chemicals associated with learning and memory. It has shown to improve spatial learning and retaining power in kids. That is why in older times, kids were often given Brahmi powder with ghee/honey. This would increase their focus and attention, while keeping them calm and distressed.

Shankhapushpi:

Shankhapushpi is a traditional remedy for increasing the functioning of the brain. The powerful antioxidants and flavonoids present in it improve the memory capacity, focus, concentration, calmness, alertness of an individual. Since it is a brain tonic and stimulator, people taking shankhapushpi have improved memory, reasoning, problem-solving, and other cognitive abilities.

SCIENTIFICALLY proven studies conducted by NIH

There are many researches by NIH that support the benefits of Ayurvedic herbs in kid’s brain and speech development. Few are as below.

Baby’s milestone: 6 foods that help in walking

The first year of a baby’s life is the most crucial year for their gross motor skill development. Motor skills refer to the body’s ability to manage the process of movement. Gross Motor skills involves baby’s milestone like holding head, sitting, crawling and walking. During her first year, your baby is busy developing coordination and muscle strength in every part of her body.

Babies develop their skills gradually. It’s so overwhelming to see your newborn doing new activities everyday, but these abilities don’t develop overnight. Babies put a lot of effort and handwork to achieve these motor skills. There are a lot of new parents frequently asking questions around baby development including when babies typically hold their head, sit up, roll over crawl and finally walk. So below are some baby’s milestone related these motor skills.

Baby’s milestone
Head control:

Your baby’s first big milestone is his/her control over the head. Babies are born with fairly weak muscles and they will rely upon you to support their head and neck. By the end of 2 months the baby should be able to lift it slightly and turn from side to side while lying on their stomach. All these little movements help strengthen the baby’s neck muscles. By 6 months generally the baby will be able to hold their head steady and gain control over their neck.

Roll over:

At around 4 months the baby starts to roll over. When you place them on their tummy they will begin to push up on their arm. Tummy to side rolling is most common in babies at this age. By 6 months most babies have gained enough abdominal strength to flip in both directions and roll over from their back to front. Rolling over helps strengthen the upper body and neck muscles that your baby needs to sit up. So always encourage your baby to roll over by placing toys or books near to them, so that they roll over to reach those things.

Sitting:

Holding head control and having enough upper body strength is a must for a baby  before he/ she is able to sit up on their own. At around 5 to 6 months, babies begin to sit with little support. At 9 months babies can sit without any support and easily get in and out of sitting position.

Walking:

Once the baby is comfortable in sitting, the next baby’s milestone is walking. Just like other milestone, walking age also varies between children. Some take their first step around 9 to 12 months while others may take a little longer time i.e around 15 to 17 months. At around 9 months, babies most likely start trying to pull themselves up to stand while holding something like bed or sofa. Soon they also try to take some steps holding from one side of the furniture to the next. They may also be able to stand without support till their first birthday. At 14 months normally most of the babies walk a few steps independently and by the end of 17 months your child will become steadier in his/ her walk.

Causes of delay

Motor skill development of the child is an important aspect in a child’s overall growth and development. But problems in sitting, crawling and walking are the most common developmental delay a child faces. A child with motor skill developmental delay may experience difficulty coordinating certain movements such as holding a pencil, walking and performing activities requiring brain and body coordination. Blow are some of the basic causes of these delays in kids:

  • Premature birth
  • Cerebral Palsy (brain damage before birth)
  • Myopathy (a disease of muscles)
  • Brain injury
  • Ataxia (defective muscle coordination)
  • Problems with vision
  • Spina Bifida (birth defect in the baby that occurs when the spine and spinal cord do not develop completely)
Tips to improve motor skill

Usually a child who is late doing certain activities catches up to other children. But sometimes, developing late is the sign of a health condition. In case a child does not show any of the above mentioned motor skill development on time, talk with your pediatrician. In addition, try these tips mentioned below

  • Give your baby plenty of tummy time.  Lay your baby on his tummy and place the toys he/ she likes in front of them.  It helps strengthen your baby’s arms, legs, torso, as well as his neck muscles.
  • Once the baby gains control over their head, you can encourage them to sit by placing a pillow around them for support. Be careful and stay close to help them if they fall.
  • Try sitting them on the floor while holding their back up straight. This helps improve their muscle control and coordination.
  • Once the baby starts sitting independently, encourage them to crawl. Set up an area on the floor with their favorite toys and things that they can explore and if they don’t crawl to reach out to toys show them how to crawl by doing yourself and ask your baby to imitate.
  • Once your baby pulls himself up and gains balance holding your hands, guide him take a few steps, this will help him gain confidence to take those first steps.
  • When the baby starts balancing and standing for a few seconds, start balancing games. Sit with the baby on the floor and help them stand up. Then count how long they can stay up before falling. Don’t forget to praise after each attempt.
  • Allow your child to be bare feet. There are tiny muscles in the feet that need to be developed. You can do this by bearing weight on them. The muscles in your feet can easily grasp the ground when bare feet.
  • Place their favorite things just out of reach so they have no choice but to try and stand to get it.
  • Bouncing a baby up and down strengthens their lower body and works on their balance. Hold their arms and hands, and assist them in learning to bounce.
Foods to improve motor skill:

As soon as your baby is 6 months, taking care of their diet, as food or nutrients that they get from food is key for a baby to achieve different milestones on time. Nutrients like protein helps in muscle strengthening, calcium and vitamin d promotes bone health and the most important foods that promote brain healthy like omega 3 fatty acids, as these developments involve the brain and body’s muscles to work together. Below are the foods that help in baby’s milestones like sitting, crawling and walking.

Omega 3:

Research has established a link between omega 3 fatty acids and brain development in early childhood. These healthy fats have amazing brain boosting power and play a vital role in enhancing memory and attention span. Omega-3 fatty acids are considered as critical brain foods that may counteract oxidative stress and inflammations, two drivers of cognitive decline which may also result in motor skill delay.

Pumpkin seeds are high in magnesium, copper, and much higher in zinc than other seeds, which help in increasing concentration, memory and thus helps in better coordination.

Ayurvedic Herbs:

Ayurveda has the potential to not only correct imbalances in our children, but also to set them on an enduring path toward optimal health and well-being. Thus, ayurvedic herbs must be included in the list of health foods for kids. Ayurvedic herbs such as ashwagandha, mulethi, brahmi, shallaki and turmeric are great for kids’ development. Overall, these herbs support immunity, bone strength, brain development and overall growth.

Calcium:

Antioxidants:

Antioxidants are compounds produced in your body or naturally found in some foods that scavenge or neutralize the effects of cell damage by potentially harmful molecules known as free radicals. Fortunately eating a diet rich in antioxidants or antioxidant rich foods help to fight oxidative stress and reduce the risk of many chronic diseases. Turmeric, Vitamin E, cocoa, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Selenium, Beta carotene, Lycopene, Lutein, Zeaxanthin, Manganese, Polyphenols show great antioxidant properties.

7 foods that helps in speech disorder/ delay in kids

That first word from your baby’s tiny mouth takes away all the pains of your sleepless night. There is no word that can describe the euphoria you feel when your baby recognizes you  and for the first time says mamma. It’s a milestone that feels like magic. however these days many kids suffer from speech disorder/delay. Lot of parents have plenty of questions about their child’s developing speech skills. Like when do babies utter their first word? When can they hold a conversation?

When do babies start talking?

As like other milestones, the age at which baby’s start talking words or sentences may vary. Some start saying words at 9 month while other may start at 1 year. Babies generally archive About 50% of the speech development at around 2 year of age and 75% by 3 years.  Following are the milestone that demonstrates normal speech development:

Birth to 6 months:

A child starts his/ her life with a cry which is a non-verbal communication, and with time starts coos in response to you or your smile. At 4 months your baby will like to babble or even copy your sounds. The sound of cries changes for different needs  whether the baby is  crying out of hunger or in pain.

6 to 12 months:

From 6 months onward the baby try to communicate by action or gestures. Starts recognizing their name, turns and looks at new sounds. Til 12 months baby start making sounds like ma-ma-ma-ma or ba-ba-ba-ba and other similar long sounds. He or she may start to combine his talking with gestures such as pointing to what he or she wants, shaking his or her head to mean ‘no’ or waving ‘bye bye’. In some cases babies start to say proper one words like mama, baba, papa etc. or try to repeat the words he/ she hears  from you.

12 to 18 months:

At this age babies start to follow instructions and understand far more words than he/she can speak. At around this age the Baby starts to recognize common objects like bottles, cups and plates. Body parts like nose, tummy, ears and mouth etc. also their belongings like recognizing  their toys . You will notice your child learning new words every day such as ‘mummy, daddy, ball, teddy, biscuit’, depending on which words he hears often . However the pronunciation may not be very clear at this stage.

18 months to 2 year:

Most of the toddlers  will start making short sentences like I want that, mummy come here, I need milk. Sounds and words will be copied more accurately. Also kids start enjoying rhymes by trying to repeat the lines or actions. By the end of 2nd year your baby may recognize about 200 words and try to make sentences with those words.

2 to 3 year:

The vocabulary keeps on growing. Their speech become more clear or you should be able to understand 75% of what your toddler says. This is the stage where they can tell you about their needs like water, milk or food, also they tell you if they need to go to the toilet. Generally pre-school begins at this age and kids are ready to learn numbers, colours and alphabets.

3 to 5 years:

Similarly, The speech development of a child means verbal expression or the way words are spoken. Whereas the language development of the child refers to a broader concept of expressing, receiving and comprehending information.

  • Talk slowly and clearly. Use simple and short sentences.
  • Read stories to your child daily. Encourage them to talk to you about the plot and characters, ask them how they think a character could behave, let them ask questions whenever they feel like they’re simply learning how to express themselves.
  • Don’t miss any opportunity and use everyday situations to create communication. Keep on telling the name of different objects around the house.
  • Explain what you are doing as you are cooking, dish washing or cleaning or engage them by saying let’s do this or that.
  • If you are not watching the television, turn it off. The excess background noise can cause delays in the formation of words
  • Let the child lead the conversation.
  • Ask a lot of daily questions and give time to your child to answer questions.
  • Give lots of praise and positive reinforcement while also correcting, instead of criticizing the child for not saying the word properly.
  • Encourage you baby to use straw for drinking or just to blow air through it. This helps the child to develop the oral muscles used for speech.

Treatments include medication, psychotherapy, education or training, or a combination of treatments. Along with the treatment and therapies, including some foods in diet may help to great extent.

Foods to avoid

Refined sugar: Excessive sugar impairs cognitive skills as well as self control. Moreover, sugar damages the protein in our body, resulting in ageing of organs, which further compromises immunity, growth and functioning. Greatest source of sugar in the average kid’s diet are sugary snacks and beverages like cookies, cakes, candies, fruit juice, soda, and sports drinks. Everything that the child picks up to eat today has strains of added sugar in some form or the other.

Preservatives: Most of the packaged food companies are adding artificial preservatives to delay spoilage and contamination in foods.

Foods to manage hyperactivity and ADHD symptoms in kids:
Chamomile:

Chamomile is considered to be a safe and effective way to help a child relax. It’s a dried flower. These flowers are white and yellow and look like beautiful little daisies. Native to Europe and Asia. Parent rated social behavior, sleep and symptom burden showed highly significant improvements. ( https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24837472/)
