for winter skin care by Iyurved

Winter has arrived! As a result, chapped lips and dry skin! Winter can wreak havoc on your skin, causing it to become dry, itchy, and irritated. On your skin, harsh winter conditions can be harmful, unpleasant, and even painful. Winter skin care necessitates a little extra time and effort due to the harsh conditions that our delicate protective barrier faces. During the winter, the severe cold atmosphere and dry indoor air can leave skin in less-than-ideal condition.

for winter skin care

However, there are several ways to combat this by making minor changes to your daily skin care routine and habits. This will keep your skin soft, supple, smooth, hydrated, and vibrant this winter.

Let’s have a look at it more closely!

Signs of dry skin:

The following are some of the most prevalent signs and symptoms of dry skin:

  • Dehydration
  • Flaky skin or rough texture
  • Cracks on the skin
  • Redness
  • Painful skin or stinging
  • Itchiness
  • Wrinkled skin with loose texture
  • Skin irritation
  • Peeling of skin
9 effective tips for winter skin care:

A small tweak in your everyday routine can help you combat the dry skin that winter brings.

1. Moisturize your skin:

Moisturization is an important step in any winter skin care routine, whether you have oily skin, normal skin, or dry skin. The natural oil for the skin is stripped away when you bathe, wash your hands, or wash your face. These natural oils are what keep your skin hydrated, healthy, and supple. As a result, it is critical to moisturize your skin every time you wash it, especially in the winter. Natural moisturizers include coconut oil, aloe vera, olive oil, buttermilk, and cocoa butter.

2. Reset your skin care routine:

If your facial skin appears to be particularly sensitive or dry as a result of the dry winter air, you may try to reconsider or simplify your skin care routine for the time being. It is also possible to use just a moisturizer and sunscreen. When you feel your skin is healthy, you can reintroduce your skin care treatment products.

During the winter, cream-based cleansers and products are always preferable. Aside from that, use toners and astringents sparingly because they contain alcohols that can dry out your skin. Use a rich moisturizer on your face and skin at night. Don’t forget about your lips. According to the AAD, using a moisturizing balm can help heal dry, cracked lips and keep them from becoming chapped.

3. Apply sunscreen:

Application of sunscreen should be a daily and a year-round habit that everyone should build. Application of sunscreen during summers is a must and explainable, but why winters? This is because during winters, the ozone layers thin out. This means we have less defense against UV rays.  Even in the winter, damaging UV rays can cause damage to your skin’s moisture barrier, which is essential for skin health and hydration. Therefore, it is important to apply sunscreen even to the easy to forget areas. The American Academy of Dermatology Association recommends using sunscreen with at least SPF 30.

4. Overnight treatments:

In the winter, this is an excellent way to replenish your skin. Overnight treatments with emollients and occlusive are an excellent way to keep your skin soft and hydrated. These are excellent for moisturizing the skin, but they take longer to absorb into the skin. As a result, by applying these overnight, your skin will have enough time to absorb them and restore itself. Wrapping your hands and feet in gloves and socks after applying moisturiser is also a good idea.

5. Drink a lot of water:

We tend to drink less water than necessary throughout the winter, whether consciously or unconsciously. This causes us and our skin to become dehydrated. Another important aspect of keeping your skin healthy and shining is to stay hydrated throughout the day. Inadequate hydration can alter the appearance of your skin and make it more prone to drying out.

6. Avoid scrubbing and scratching:

Skin exfoliation might be a regular skin care practise for you, but if your skin is cracked and dry, you should avoid it until it heals. Aside from that, if your skin feels stringy, avoid scratching and scrubbing excessively. This could result in bleeding and bruises. If your skin appears dry or flaky, a gentle chemical exfoliation may be preferable than a physical scrub. Scrubs containing big particles that are harsher are more likely to damage your skin’s moisture barrier.

7. Use gentle skin care products:

Using the improper skin care products can aggravate your skin, whether it’s winter or summer. In the winter, choosing the correct moisturizer, soap, body wash, face wash, exfoliators, and cleansers is crucial. Choose items that are appropriate for your skin type. The natural oils and moisture in your skin should be able to be retained by your skin care products. You can also avoid winter skin problems by using less soap overall, so just lather your hands, armpits, genitals, and feet when necessary.

8. Choose comfortable clothes:

Winter needs warmth, but the winter clothing you choose might have an impact on your skin. When dealing with any skin ailment, it’s a good idea to avoid using harsh materials. And dry skin is no different. Avoid wearing apparel that is too tight. Whenever possible, dress in soft cotton clothing. Give your skin a chance to breathe. Furthermore, they frequently wash their garments with harsh detergents and chemicals.

9. Limit your bathing time:

It is tempting to take long hot water showers in winter, but your skin will be better served if this temptation would be replaced by short warm water baths. Hot water evaporates quickly, drying your skin and compromising its natural protective barrier. Avoid using hot water baths and limit bathing time. Moreover, immediately dry yourself well and moisturize.

Foods to protect your skin in winter:
Nuts and seeds:

Nuts and seeds have many characteristics that make them an excellent food for healthy skin. They are a good source of essential fatty acids, which are fats that the body cannot make itself. Many health experts advise eating a handful of nuts and seeds every day. Almonds, walnuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds and others all carry omega 3 fatty acids that are good for your body. These fatty acids help to strengthen the membranes of skin cells, locking in moisture and nutrients that keep the skin plump and glowing and keeps out toxins that can damage skin cells.

Jaggery:

During the winter, many Indian homes make a variety of sweets with jaggery or gur. This is because jaggery is not only a nutritious sugar substitute, but it is also known to generate heat in the body, which helps to keep the body warm in the cold. Jaggery also contains glycolic acid, which smoothes the texture of your skin, making it soft and supple.

Tomatoes:

Benefits of tomatoes for dry skin on the face are plenty. It contains several skin friendly vitamins and nutrients that can give you beautiful and glowing skin such as lycopene and antioxidants. These can repair damaged skin cells and restore its natural, healthy glow. It also contains deep cleansing agents and corrects the skin pH levels (making it not too dry nor too oily), therefore can very well prevent dryness in skin and minimize acne. (What are other benefits of consuming a tomato every day?)

Ghee:

Butter oil (ghee) is a natural and easy source of essential healthy fats that is beneficial for your overall health. Ghee, according to Ayurveda, helps you stay warm from the inside out, which is why it’s used in so many winter recipes. Ghee is high in essential fatty acids, which can aid to nourish dull, dry skin. It also aids in the hydration of the skin’s cells.

Avocado:

The natural oils in avocado deeply penetrate the skin to nourish, soften and hydrate. Avocado is packed with vitamin A which is responsible for ensuring effective cell repair. It is a great source of biotin, which is part of Vitamin B and helps to control dry skin issues. They are factories of healthy fats including vitamin E, which are essential to keep skin flexible and moisturized. Additionally, avocado also helps to slow the visible signs of ageing. (What is an easy recipe to use avocado?)

Green vegetables:

During the winter, never underrate the power of green vegetables like spinach, cabbage, kale, methi (fenugreek), broccoli, and others. These veggies are the queen of beauty in winters, as they are high in vitamins C, A, and K, which help repair skin tissues, reduce free radical damage, and make you glow.

9 Proven Ingredients for Pimples on Face

for pimples on face by iyurved

We have all been in a position where along with something important, be it a date, an occasion or an important meeting, a breakout pops up too! Acne has always been an uninvited guest and the most asked question is how to get rid of acne? Pimples on face is the most common skin condition around the globe. Your skin has tiny pores or hair follicles and when these pores become clogged with sebum (skin’s natural oil), dead skin, bacteria and dirt the formation of pimples takes place. Apart from this, there are many reasons that cause pimples.

And if your skin is frequently affected by this condition then it results in the formation of acne. It appears especially on the face, forehead, neck, upper arms, shoulders, back and chest because those areas have the most sebaceous glands.

Acne normally occurs at the puberty age as the sebaceous glands activate but nowadays adult acne also seems to be prominent. (How to treat your kids acne?) However, pimples or acne, in general, are unfavourable at any time. It can, however, be treated with some consistency and the help of natural ingredients.

WHAT TRIGGERS ACNE?

There are certain things that are said to trigger or worsen acne. It may be your lifestyle or the genetics that causes pimples to grow.

Diet: Your skin reflects what you eat. Certain foods including refined carbohydrates, high calorie food, fats and junk food affects the skin. Uneven eating habits can also trigger acne.

Hormonal changes: Androgens, a hormone which rises in the puberty stage, cause the sebaceous gland to enlarge and produce more sebum. Also, the hormonal changes during pregnancy and menstruation cause the breakouts. The midlife hormonal changes due to the living pattern also causes pimples in the adults. (How can foods help in menstruation issues?)

Genetics: The genetics also trigger the acne. If the parents or ancestors had an issue of acne, the proceeding will face that.

Medications: Certain medications can trigger acne. Usually, the drugs contain steroids effects. Other than this, any reaction to the drug also induces this.

Stress: Stress can be a cause of pimples but if you already have acne, stress may make it worse.

Cosmetic products: Cosmetic products can cause pimples. Some greasy or oily cosmetic products trigger acne.

Friction: Friction or pressure on the skin where the pimple is already there can make it worse or even inflammation can occur.

9 natural ingredients that reduce pimples on face:
1. Niacinamide:

The ‘it’ ingredient in the market this time is niacinamide. Niacinamide is one of the versatile, recognizable, desirable and safe skin care ingredients. Using niacinamide over periods of time helps in reducing severe acne and pimples. It has anti-inflammatory properties, lowers sebum production, keeps the skin moisturized and reduces acne causing bacteria on the skin.

2. Aloe vera leaf juice:

Certain characteristics of aloe vera such as anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, astringent and antioxidant help effectively in reducing pimples and acne by killing acne causing bacteria. Moreover, it also contains magnesium lactate that reduces the itching caused by the same. Apart from this, it is used to soothe the skin, regenerate skin cells and add moisture to it.

3. Kakadu plum extract:

The high vitamin C content of the Kakadu plum makes it a useful therapy for acne treatment. It aids in the removal of the bacteria that causes pimples on your face, as well as the prevention of pimples in the future.

4. Illawarra plum extract:

Another rich source of vitamin C, Illawarra plum is also known for its antioxidant properties. This fruit extract helps in revitalizing dull skin. It not only helps in minimizing pimples but also aids in skin hydration, rejuvenation, and vitality.

5. Burdekin plum extract:

This is yet another fruit that belongs to the plum category and is a rich source of vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin A and vitamin K. It is packed with all the essential vitamins for skin.  Vitamin C is thought to be useful in the treatment of acne because it protects the skin from free radical damage, aids in skin regeneration, and forms scar tissue, blood vessels, and tendons.

6. Sodium hyaluronate:

This is typically thought to be a non-comedogenic ingredient. Acne redness and apparent appearance can be reduced with sodium hyaluronate. It can also help protect the skin, which is particularly beneficial for acne-prone skin. Furthermore, if you are unduly drying your face with strong exfoliants, cleansers, and treatments, it may assist your acne by rebalancing the skin.

7. Salicylic acid:

Face acids are much in trend now and salicylic acid is one of them. It is well known for reducing acne as it is an excellent exfoliating agent. Salicylic acid penetrates the skin and dissolves the dead skin cells that clog your pores, keeping them clear.

8. Allantoin:

This non-irritating component when applied topically, helps in soothing, protecting and hydrating the skin. Allantoin increases the blood flow in the skin and has tissue repairing properties. This helps in reducing the inflammation and the bumps on the skin.

9. Zinc PCA:

Right from being an effective sunscreen ingredient to its fantastic role in reducing pimples or breakouts. Many scientific studies have shown that Zinc PCA is an effective combination for treating acne and reducing the pain, inflammation, and redness associated with it. It can aid in the reduction of sebum secretion, which is the cause of pore clogging. Additionally, it aids in the skin’s overall healing process.

Causes of Nasal Congestion in kids: 8 Ways to Relieve

Baby’s stuffy or runny nose is a matter of concern for every parent but also unavoidable due to their still maturing immune system. Stuffed-up noses are caused by inflammation of the sensitive membranes that line the nasal cavity, and they’re usually nothing to worry about. Nasal obstruction is when the nasal passages are blocked, or there is difficulty breathing from the nose. This is very common in babies and toddlers. Especially it is troublesome for newborns younger than 2 months, as they don’t know how to sniff or blow their nose while adults and older children can blow their noses to help clear their nasal passages. The most common causes for nasal congestion and runny nose in infants and children are infections, mainly of viral origin, or allergies

Symptoms of nasal congestion

A child with nasal congestion may also have these symptoms

  • Stuffy or Runny nose
  • Sneezing or coughing
  • Itchy eyes, nose, mouth and throat
  • Reduced sense of smell or taste
  • Has difficulty breathing or is unable to breathe
  • Noisy breathing
  • Body aches
  • Recurrent, severe respiratory infection
  • Problem in falling asleep. (some foods that help in sound sleep)
  • Difficulty in feeding
Causes For nasal congestion

Nasal congestion can be caused by any of the following causes:

Cold and flu

Children catch colds when a virus comes in contact with the lining of the nose and throat. There are more than two hundred different viruses causing colds in children, but the Rhinovirus is the most common offender. The symptoms for cold include stuffy or runny nose and sneezing. (Home remedies for cold and flu)

Infection of the sinuses:

Sinuses are moist air spaces within the bones of the face around the nose. When they get infected and swell or become irritated, this is called sinusitis (or a sinus infection).  This infection usually causes nasal congestion.

Allergic rhinitis:

These are the symptoms that occur when you breathe in something you are allergic to, such as dust, animal dander, or pollen. Symptoms can also occur when you eat a food that you are allergic to. (What are some common food allergies in kids?)

Presence of irritants:

Another prominent cause of blocked nose due to cold in children is the presence of irritants such as dust, smoke, or perfumes around the little one.

Foreign object in nostril:

Nasal congestion in toddlers can also be because of the insertion of small objects like a bead or a peanut by mistake, which make it difficult to breathe properly and need to be taken out immediately.

Large adenoids

When the tissue in the back of the nose in children is enlarged, this may also cause nasal congestion in kids.

When to see a doctor?

In most of the cases nasal congestion is minor and clears up within a few days. If you notice any of the following symptoms, please seek help from your baby’s doctor.

  • Have fever (How to control fever at home?)
  • Nasal discharge persists for more than 10 to 14 days
  • Greenish or bloody nasal discharge
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Your child is eating or drinking less or seems to be having trouble with feeding
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Your child is peeing less than normal
  • Ear pain.
  • A blue tint to skin around lips and nostrils.
Home remedies for nasal congestion

Taking proper care at home can help your baby to recover fast from nasal congestion. Below are some home remedies and foods that can help your baby.

Plenty of fluid:

Keep your child hydrated, this will help in thinning the mucus clogged in their nasal passage. If the baby is under 6 months, feed more breastmilk or formula milk and if the child is above 6 month you can offer warm water or other fluids. Give a small amount of fluid at a time but multiple times in a day. Apart from this you can also offer hot homemade soups, which are full of essential vitamins and minerals and are easy to digest. Avoid drinks with caffeine, including colas and tea, because they can make dehydration worse by increasing urination.

Saline solution:

This is the most important home remedy for a stuffy nose. Mix a teaspoon of table salt in warm water and pour the solution into your kid’s nostrils with the help of a dropper. This will directly impact the thinning of the mucus.

Warm  compress:

Warm compress is one of the traditional and proven remedies to open up the nasal passage. Soak a soft washcloth in the warm water, squeeze it well. Now place this over the nose. This will help your child in passing the mucus and eases the clogged nose. Repeat this in a regular interval.

Steam:

If your child has nasal congestion then giving them steam is the best thing to do. For small kids who can’t inhale steam themselves, turn on the shower up to its hottest setting and close the door and let the steam build up. Turn off the shower once the bathroom is full of steam, now sit there with your baby for sometime. Your baby will automatically inhale the steam. This will help in thinning of mucus and give your baby relief from nasal congestion.

Sleeping Position:

Keep your child’s head in an elevated position to give some relief from cough and blocked nose that perpetuates through the night. (How is sleep and brain development related?)

TURMERIC

Due to its antibacterial and anti-viral properties turmeric is one of the best foods for cold and flu season, known to treat viral infections. Adding turmeric powder to a glass of warm milk can offer relief in the aching throat and runny nose.

GINGER

Ginger roots have been used for centuries for health benefits in Asian cultures. Research shows that ginger has medicinal properties, both antiviral and antibacterial, that could help ease the symptoms of stuffy nose or sore throat. Take out some ginger juice by grating it and mix it with some honey. Give this mixture to your child above 1 year twice a day for quick relief (What are other Ayurvedic herbs that are good for kids?)

Massage

• Heat mustard oil and roast garlic and carom seeds in it. Once cool, apply this oil on the baby’s head, palm, feet base, chest and back. Leave it applied and let the child sleep. It will help settle the cold and cough both. Also, any body ache the child has will be resolved. Mustard oil is a very effective cough and cold home remedy.

• Take1 to 2 tbs of lukewarm mustard oil and mix half a teaspoon of rock salt. Then, massage this oil gently on the baby’s chest and back, cover with cotton cloth. The warmth of mustard oil helps in relieving congestion.

Prevention is better then cure

Do your child often fall sick with fever, cold and cough? The food we eat plays a key role in determining the overall health and immunity. It gives the body a condition of being able to resist a particular disease. By adding foods, like Nuts, Seeds, Ayurvedic herbs like Tulsi, Giloy, Turmeric, Amla, Ashwagandha and Antioxidants like Cocoa and Vitamin E to your kid’s diet you can prevent them from falling sick again and again by boosting their immunity.

Treatment for Dry Skin: 7 Ready Steady Glow Ingredients

The most talked about and most common skin ailment on the globe is dry skin. It can affect any part of the body, but our face skin is particularly vulnerable. In many cases, treatment for dry skin includes simple lifestyle changes and over-the-counter moisturizers will suffice.

Dry skin is defined by a lack of moisture in the epidermis, or top layer of the skin. Lipids and protein make up the epidermis, which helps to keep the skin hydrated. When these proteins and lipids are deficient in our skin, moisture from the skin evaporates quickly, resulting in dry skin.

The symptoms of dry skin usually include cracked skin, itching, flakiness, redness, grey or ashy skin and stretched skin. Before knowing the treatments, let us understand the causes of dry skin.

What are the causes of dry skin?

The absolute cause of dry skin is quite unidentified. But it is alleged to be triggered by some environmental, genetic, atopic conditions.

  • Weather conditions – cold weather
  • Using extreme hot water for bathing
  • Hormone
  • Genetics
  • Allergens
  • Dry air
  • Exposure to harsh skin care products
  • Medical conditions (diabetes, eczema)
  • Unbalanced skin Ph
  • Harsh skin scrubbing or scratching
How to get rid of dry skin naturally?

There are the big hitters in the realm of moisturizing skin-care ingredients that you’ve probably heard of. These are few natural ingredients that helps in treatment for dry skin help:

1. Aloe vera:

This ingredient is an all-rounder and works great for alleviating dry skin. The mucopolysaccharides present help in binding moisture to the skin. Aloe vera gets absorbed easily in the skin and helps in retaining moisture and improving skin integrity.

2. Glycerin:

This humectant is a dry skin superhero. Glycerin has antimicrobial properties and is well suited for almost all types of skin.  It helps minimize the water loss in your skin and balances the skin Ph. Additionally, it draws moisture to the skin and creates a protective layer which helps in keeping the skin healthy and glowing. In skin care products, glycerin is majorly used as occlusive that traps moisture in the skin. Few studies show that glycerin is the most effective humectant.

3. Papaya extract:

This fruit extract is indeed a boon in treating dry skin It contains antioxidants, enzymes (papain), and vitamin A, all of which aid in the treatment of dry, flaky skin. Furthermore, this nutrient-dense fruit extract revitalizes the skin, keeping it soft, vibrant, and luminous.

4. Psidium Guajava (Guava):

Guava contains a variety of antioxidants and vitamins. It aids in the protection of your skin from harm. Guava fruit extract, in addition to its health benefits, aids in skin hydration when applied to the skin. Moreover, as guava has antimicrobial properties it may reduce the inflammation caused by dry skin.

5. Licorice:

For centuries, licorice has been used for skin treatments along with its benefits for health. Licorice has skin smoothing properties. It is an effective agent when it comes to treat dry skin or even atopic dermatitis (a type of eczema).  The active compound of licorice, glycyrrhetinic acid, helps in reducing skin dryness severity by alleviating irritation and redness. It also helps in regulating the oil production in the skin.

6. Hydrolysed rice protein:

This type of rice protein improves the ability of the skin to bind moisture. Thus, developing flexibility and strength. Hydrolyzed rice protein aids  in retaining skin’s moisture is an valuable cosmetic ingredient. It contains vitamin E, starch, and amino acids, which keep the skin hydrated and provide a protective barrier.

7. Sodium hyaluronate:

This hydrophilic ingredient extracted from Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is hydrophilic in nature. Sodium hyaluronate when applied to the skin topically draws moisture to the skin and retains it. It also helps in repairing the compromised moisture barrier and plums the skin up. According to the studies, sodium hyaluronate provides greater hydrating effects than HA.

Dry and frizzy hair home remedies: 10 hair hacks

dry and frizzy hair home remedies by Iyurved

People having dry and frizzy hair may relate to this quote that keeps on popping up the internet a lot of times. “My hair is wilder than I am” But, hey! Frizzy hair may be difficult to manage, but it’s not impossible! Frizzy hair is 100% natural and there is nothing wrong with it. With so many over-the-counter (OTC) anti-frizz products available in the market, you’d think keeping frizz away can be easy. But it seems that no matter how much product you put in your hair to keep it from frizzing up, nothing works. Here home remedies come into picture. Yes, there are some easy and effective dry and frizzy hair home remedies that not only control your frizz but also help improve the overall hair health.

Before going to home remedies, let’s start with some basic ideas about Frizz!

what causes hair to be frizzy?

Our hair is composed of three layers, the outermost of which is known as the cuticle. When the hair is healthy, the natural oil present in the outer layers of the hair protects the inner layer of the hair as well. As a result, the hair retains moisture, shine, and sheen.

But, when hair becomes damaged or dry, the cuticle (outer layer of the hair strand) begins to resemble a pine cone, with rough, open, and overlapping scales. When this happens, the hair loses moisture while absorbing moisture from the air. This causes the hair to swell, lose shape, become fragile, brittle, and appear dull. In a nutshell, it becomes frizzy!

Causes of dry and frizzy hair:

A lot of factors are responsible for dry and frizzy hair. Dry hair makes the frizz worse. Here are some possible causes:

  • Dry scalp
  • Weather or environmental conditions
  • Excessive sun exposure
  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Age
  • Very hot water for hair wash
  • Frequent or too often hair wash
  • Heat styling (blow try, straighteners, curlers)
  • Using harsh hair care product
  • Hormonal changes
  • No proper hair care routine
  • Some medical conditions can also lead to dry and frizzy hair:
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Hypoparathyroidism
  • Anorexia nervosa
  • Menkes disease
dry and frizzy hair home remedies:

You don’t have to spend a lot of money on these home remedies. Well, definitely not as much as the anti-frizz products available in the market. These remedies are pocket friendly, effective, and the simplest way to control frizz!

1.    Banana hair mask:

This fruit is almost universally adored. Bananas are not only good for the body but also for the hair. They are high in potassium and contain a lot of moisture. When applied to the hair, they help to prevent split ends, reduce frizz, soften the hair, keep it moisturized, and improve the elasticity of the hair.

Mash one banana. Mix 2 tablespoons of honey. Whisk and make a paste. Apply thoroughly from roots to tips. Let it rest for 45-50 minutes. Rinse well.

mash one banana and thoroughly spread it on the hair, from roots to ends. Leave it on for 1 hour and rinse with lukewarm water.

2.    Egg mask:

‘Do not use it if you have an egg allergy.’ Eggs contain a lot of protein, saturated fats, vitamins, and biotin. It has the ability to smooth and moisturize frizzy hair. Furthermore, it makes the hair shinier and healthier.

Whip one or two eggs according to the length of your hair. Mix 1-2 tablespoons of olive oil to it. Whisk it until they are frothy. Apply on the hair and scalp. Make sure that the entire length of hair is covered. Tie and cover your hair with aplastic wrap. Rest it for 30 minutes. Rinse well.

3.    Apple cider vinegar (ACV):

The pH of healthy hair is between 4.5 and 5.5. When the pH of the hair becomes too alkaline, the cuticles open up, resulting in frizz. ACV which is slightly acidic in nature that maintains the hair pH when applied. It helps by removing the product build up, reduces dandruff and thus tames frizzy hair. It also has antibacterial properties. People having sensitive scalp should avoid this remedy as it may cause irritation. Additionally, those who have coloured hair must not use this very often as this may fade the colour.

Mix 1/3 cup of apple cider vinegar to 1 quarter warm water. Combine thoroughly. Pour the required amount onto the hairs. Ensure that the entire length is covered. Allow it to sit for a few minutes before rinsing thoroughly. You can even use a conditioner if necessary. The strong odour of ACV must be washed away.

4.    Yogurt and Honey:

Honey and yogurt are a great combination to kick the frizz out. Yogurt has conditioning properties whereas honey provides hydration.

Mix well ½ cup of yogurt and 1 tablespoon of honey. Apply this to your hair and scalp completely. Keep it for about 20-30 minutes. Rinse well and ensure that all the residues of yogurt are washed off.

5.    Warm oil:

Coconut oil and argan oil are great to control the frizzy hairs. They are rich in lauric acid and oleic, linolenic acids respectively. Overall, they help in adding moisture to the hair, reduce protein loss, provide shine and protect hair from styling heat. There are multiple ways in which you can use these oils.

Apply warm coconut oil mixed with 10 drops of vitamin E on the scalp and hair. Massage gently. Leave it overnight. Rinse with warm water and shampoo.

Applying a tiny amount of coconut oil post wash (when the hair is damp) helps in reducing frizz too.

Before heat styling, add a few drops of argan oil on the palm and apply on the hair.

6.    Avocado hair mask:

Frizzy hair remedies at home include this fruit which is not only a delicious toast topping, but it’s also a superfruit that fights frizz. Avocado is high in vitamin A, E, saturated fats, vitamins, and minerals, all of which aid in hair strengthening, nourishing dry, damaged hair, and retaining moisture.

Mash one ripe avocado. To it add 2-3 spoons of coconut oil. Make a medium thick paste. Apply it all over your scalp and hair. Cover it with a plastic wrap or towel. Let it rest on your hairs for 20-30 minutes. Wash well with shampoo.

Herbs have been used for centuries for treating a lot of health concerns. It has incredible medical benefits when it comes to hair and skin too. Here are a few simple but amazing ayurvedic dry and frizzy hair home remedies:

White spots on kid’s face: causes and remedies

White spot on the face is the most common skin problem among kids. It can be caused by a variety of conditions, including allergies and nutritional deficiencies. White patches on the skin usually appear when the skin protein or dead cell becomes trapped under the skin’s surface. Depigmentation can also be the reason.

Generally white spots are not a reason to worry or concern, but still it is important to get it checked by a dermatologist, to know the causes or treatment.

Causes of white spot on kid’s face
Mineral and Vitamin deficiency:

We are what we eat. We all know the importance of a balanced and nutritious diet, but kids being fussy eaters miss the required nutrients, as a result they suffer from mineral and vitamin deficiencies and white spots on their face can be one of them. Deficiencies in calcium, vitamin D and vitamin E can cause white patches on the skin.

Vitamin B12 is responsible for the production of melanin in the body. Deficiency in this vitamin can also lead to white spots.

Tinea versicolor:

Tinea versicolor is the common fungal infection of the skin. It  is a skin condition characterized by patches of lighter or darker skin. This is caused by a type of yeast (fungus) that is found on most people’s skin. It is generally not harmful and isn’t contagious. They are especially common on the back, chest, neck and/or arms. They may occur on the face as well, particularly in children. People who have a weakened immune system are generally more susceptible to infections. People who live in a humid or hot climate are affected more. Exposure to the sun can make these patches even worse.

Pityriasis alba:

Pityriasis alba is a common skin disorder of patches of light-colored (hypopigmented) areas. The cause is unknown  but usually appears during summers and the humid season may be linked to atopic dermatitis (eczema). The disorder is most common in children and teens. They are mostly located on the face, arms, and upper trunk and are more noticeable in people with darker skin types. Starts with red, scaly, itchy patches. These patches eventually heal and leave behind faint, white spots.

Worm Infection

This reason is still under research. Some people claim the white patches are due to worms in the stomach. Though this reason is not sure, you can still deworm your kids once in a while. (How to deworm kids naturally?)

Tips to prevent white spot on kid’s face:

You can prevent your child from white spots on face simply by following these tips’

  • Always make sure that your child is applying a broad spectrum sunscreen before going out in the sun.  It’s better to use sunscreen as recommended by a doctor. (How to apply a sunscreen?)
  • Give your child a balanced diet to meet their daily nutritional needs. So that they do not suffer from any deficiency. (what is a balanced diet for kids?)
  • However there is no study to prove the impact of worms on white spots on the face, no harm to get your baby deworm every 6 months.
  • Make sure the face is not oily and sweaty, wash the face with a mild foaming cleanser and clean it often with cold water, at least 2 to 3 times a day.
  • If these white patches are due to some fungal infection, then use antifungal cream as prescribed by the doctor.
  • Some pediatricians may also advise using non-perfume and non-dye emollients. This will prevent dry skin which might sometimes lead to Pityriasis Alba.

However these white spots on the face or Pityriasis Alba is a self-limiting disease and is likely to disappear on its own. There is no specific treatment for white spots, but if the affected area have severe itching or whitish patch has changed color to reddish and is also spreading, it’s better to consult your pediatrician or dermatologist

Foods that may help to prevent white spot on face

There are certain foods that you must include to your child’s daily diet to avoid white spots on face of kids

CALCIUM:

Deficiency of calcium not only can cause white spots on the face but also results in weaker bones. It is really important to get strong bones and we get a chance to build them only once – throughout childhood and adolescence. Children who get enough calcium in childhood start their adult lives with the strongest bones possible. Mostly calcium is stored in bones and teeth where it supports their structure and hardness, but the body also needs calcium for muscles to move and for nerves to carry messages between the brain and every body part. Calcium is predominantly found in milk and milk based products like cheese. And is also found in smaller quantities in some nuts and seeds. (Should kids take whey protein?) Moreover, few herbs such as shallaki also contain calcium.

Vitamin D:

Every single cell in the body requires this Vitamin D. Body can also produce this through cholesterol exposure to sunlight. However, deficiency of Vitamin D is common in kids and along with white spots results in weaker bones and muscles, fatigue, depression, body pain, and extreme hair loss (alopecia). Vitamin D too has to be consumed with fat (oil). For e.g. Cheese has vitamin D and fat both, so it’s a great food supplement for children to meet this nutrition.

Vitamin E:

It is an important vitamin that also acts as a powerful antioxidant, which helps to protect the body against damage caused by free radicals (pollution, lifestyle, stress, processed food).Vitamin E is a fat soluble vitamin which can be stored in the body. It is rarely found deficient in kids who eat nuts, seeds and greens. This vitamin is vital in protecting against any infections and damage to eyes, skin, and brain and enables regeneration of cells to keep organs healthy and active.

Vitamin B12:

Also known as Cobalamin is important for the production of blood cells and melanin in the body to sustain healthy nerve cells in the body. Apart from white spots on the face, vitamin B12 shortage can also lead to a number of symptoms including weakness, exhaustion, constipation, a decreased appetite, and weight. Failure to meet the minimum requirements can also have negative effects on the nervous system and can lead to mental illness such as confusion, depression and dementia. The main food sources of vitamin B12 are Dairy products, fish, meat, beef liver, and fortified cereals.

Home remedies for white spot on face
Ginger:

It has anti-inflammatory  antibacterial, antiviral properties that make it an excellent home remedy for healing skin discoloration. Cut a slice of ginger and place it on the affected area. Let it sit there until the ginger dries. Repeat this one to two times a day till a few weeks to see the results.

Tulsi:

Tulsi is an important herb and every household should have it. With its antibiotic and excellent antifungal properties, it kills the fungi that cause discoloration. Make your child chew 2 to 3 leaves daily to see positive results in a few weeks.

Coconut oil:

Coconut oil applied to the skin is an anti-inflammatory that will encourage the growth of new pigment. It protects your skin from the harmful UV radiations by acting as a barrier between your skin and the radiations. This acts as a natural sunscreen as few studies have stated that it can block about 15-20% of the sun’s UV radiation

Copper pot:

If you eat more copper (by using copper pots) you can aid in the production of melanin which may help prevent future melanin loss. Cooking in copper is not advisable when it comes to salty and acidic food since they react with the metal but eating in these is useful .

The benefit of Vitamin C: Ready Steady Glow!

the benefit of vitamin c

We all love our skin and do care for that. It’s a universal desire to have flawless skin. Yet, sometimes we find ourselves at a stage where we struggle to meet our skin expectations. Dark spots, undoubtedly, are the most common skin issue that is faced across the world. Dark spots aren’t necessarily a condition but the change in the colour of the skin which is usually harmless. The benefit of vitamin C along with the other ingredients for dark spots are well known.

The colour differences of the skin in humans are mainly due to the natural pigment granules present and the amount of the melanin produced. Melanin is pigment which is made by the cells in the skin which provides coloration to the skin and is responsible for the dark spots too. The light and the dark skin complexion depend on the amount of the melanin produced in your body. But how do we reduce the dark spots on the face?

Well, where do we even begin? There are a lot of ingredients but vitamin C has captivated the entire cosmetic industry because of its potential benefits.  It is legendary in the skin care world and is known as the powerhouse. Vitamin C, on the other hand, is the holy grail (for a good reason) for many skin-related issues. The benefit of vitamin C are for reducing dark spots are massive!

Why do dark spots occur?

Dark spots occur when the skin generates more melanin. All types of the skin are affected with this. The types in which the dark spots appear may be melasma, post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (inflammation due to acne, pimples, eczema, burn or frictions), sunspots and even freckles.  There are a lot of factors that could cause dark spots on the face. Here are a few:

  • Excess sun exposure (Tips to use sunscreen)
  • Medication
  • High production of melanin
  • Allergies
  • Heredity of skin pigmentation
  • Inflammatory Diseases
  • Aging
  • Pregnancy or hormonal causes
  • Chemical or physical injury
  • Frequent exposure to some cosmetic product
How to reduce dark spots naturally?

There is no specific model for the mechanism behind the formation of dark spots. Additionally, the development of dark spots is ambiguous and unpredictable. However, there are few ingredients that help in reducing the dark spots.

1. Vitamin C:

It has been recognized as one of the most effective antioxidant (Foods with anti-oxidants) ingredients on the market. The benefit of topical vitamin C (also known as ascorbic acid) is thta it promotes collagen production, protects skin from sun UV rays, impedes melanin production (NIH), prevents existing pigments from getting darker and lightens the dark spots.

2. Licorice:

This is an effective botanical ingredient that helps in fighting the dark spots. Studies have shown that licorice root extract contains active components known as glabridin and liquiritin which helps in treating dark spots. The former one helps in retaining the enzyme that produces melanin and the latter one breaks up the melanin hence, reducing the pigmentation. Consequently, it reduces the dark spot on the face.

3. Aloe barbadensis (Aloe vera) leaf juice:

Aloe Vera is the king when it comes to skin. Aloin and Aloesin are the active ingredients present in Aloe Vera. This active could work effectively in reducing dark spots over the period of time. Moreover, it is also responsible for soothing and moisturizing the skin. Aloin has been shown to break down melanin in the skin, whereas aloesin suppresses melanin development by decreasing the action of tyrosinase, an enzyme that produces melanin (NIH).

4. Papaya fruit extract:

Papaya is considered as a natural exfoliant. It contains phytochemicals, fruit acid, beta-carotene, vitamins and enzymes, papain being the major one. It helps in breaking down the skin cells in and improves the skin by breaking the topmost layer of the skin. Thus, reducing the dark spots and enhancing the skin complexion.

5. Strawberry begonia extract:

Saxifraga sarmentosa is the extract from the herb strawberry begonia. It is widely known for its antioxidant and astringent properties. This herb has been used as a cosmetic ingredient for its skin whitening properties. Apart from reducing dark spots it also assists skin tightening and degreases oily skin.

6. Guava fruit extract:

This fruit extract is the newest source of skin care ingredients in the OTC products.  Guava fruit extract helps in reducing the dark spots as it is rich in vitamin A, vitamin C and potassium. It reduces the wrinkles, pigmentation, inflammation and tones the skin.

Which ingredients to avoid?

Despite the fact that every skin care product claims to reduce black spots, there are a few skin care chemicals that must be avoided. When taken for an extended period of time, they can cause serious harm. Therefore, when looking for a solution to help fade black spots, it’s important to do your research. Some cosmetics contain substances that are potentially detrimental to your skin and health. Here are a few to mention:

Foods to avoid:
Foods to avoid by Iyurved

Refined sugar: Excessive sugar spikes the insulin levels in the body and result in inflammation. Moreover, sugar can aggravate other skin conditions such as acne, wrinkles and fine lines. Greatest source of sugar in the average kid’s diet are sugary snacks and beverages like cookies, cakes, candies, fruit juice, soda, and sports drinks. Everything that the child picks up to eat today has strains of added sugar in some form or the other.

Preservatives: Most of the packaged food companies are adding artificial preservatives to delay spoilage and contamination in foods.  Artificial preservatives such as nitrates, benzoates, sulfites, sorbates, parabens, formaldehyde, BHT, BHA and several others can cause serious health hazards such as skin hypersensitivity, allergy, asthma, hyperactivity, neurological damage.

Refined oil: The high temperature involved in the refining process removes all the natural and beneficial substances from the oil, which is not good for the skin and body.
