To understand how this works, keep reading this blog.

What is a Nebulizer?

Nebulizer is a type of medical device that someone with asthma or similar respiratory illness can use to rapidly and efficiently deliver medication directly to the lungs. It can convert the liquid medication into a very thin vapour that can be inhaled through a mouthpiece. Many pediatric respiratory illnesses are treated  by using aerosolized medicines. It will take 15-20 minutes to release the medication. There are three types of nebulizer which is mentioned below,

  • Jet type: Produces a mist using compressed gas
  • Ultrasonic type: Generates larger mist particle-size aerosol using high-frequency vibration
  • Mesh type: The aerosol is created by liquid passing through a very thin mesh. The tiniest particles are released by this type of nebulizer.

Types of medicines used in nebulizers

A variety of medicine types can be used with nebulizer. Here are some of the medicines:

Antibiotics:

When children have major respiratory illness, specific antibiotics are directly delivered into the lungs or respiratory system using nebulizer.

Bronchodilators:

These medications aid in widening the airways and ease breathing. Children who are dealing with chronic obstructive lung disease, asthma, breathing difficulties or other respiratory conditions are frequently given bronchodilators for treatment.

Saline solution:

The saline solution can effectively widen air passages. As a result, mucus in the lungs may become more loosened which makes it simpler to cough up.

How nebulizer helps in relieving cough in children ?

One of the most crucial steps is to understand the actual reason behind your children’s cough before using the nebulizer. Our body uses coughing as a defence mechanism against pollutants and irritants. Here are some common causes of cough in children:

1. COMMON COLD:

Cough doesn’t always show as the initial sign of a common cold, but it usually does in its later stages. Common cold can make your baby’s throat feel itchy. At the beginning of the cold, your baby may experience brief episodes of mild, wet coughing; but, as the cold gets worse, these episodes will become drier.

2. IRRITANTS IN THE ENVIRONMENT:

Some kids are more sensitive than others to environmental irritants including smoke, dust, and mould. Cough may develop after exposure, especially if the air is dry. With continued exposure to the irritant, the cough might develop.

3. ACID REFLUX OR GERD:

Acid reflux causes the stomach’s contents to flow backward into the oesophagus, causing discomfort and a cough. Children and infants who have GERD, also known as chronic gastric reflux disease, may have a persistent cough.

4. WHOOPING COUGH:

Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, is a dangerous upper respiratory infection. It frequently begins with cold-like symptoms before developing into a chronic cough that makes “whooping” noises, losing appetite, and a low-grade fever. Constant whooping eventually leads to drying of the throat causing dry cough.

5. ALLERGIES:

Allergies can be one major cause. Many kiddos have a fascination towards gardens, flowers, pets etc. All these can be potential sources of allergens that can negatively affect in some or the other way round. When the human body perceives a foreign substance (such as pollen or pet hair) as a danger, allergies develop. Your body reacts by generating extra mucus, which can then drip down your throat and cause a cough.

6. ASTHMA:

Most asthmatic kids experience a dry cough, which does not produce mucus. This is a characteristic of asthma and occurs when the airways narrow in reaction to an irritant. The restricted airway also frequently results in a high-pitched wheeze sound in combination with the cough.

Also check, 7 foods that help with Asthma

Nebulizer therapy may aid in minimising the inflammation in the lungs or air passage particularly in the case of above mentioned respiratory issues. Therefore, the symptoms including coughing, breathing difficulties or wheezing can be relieved. Yet, nebulizers typically do not address the root cause of coughing.

Things to keep in mind while using nebulizer

Proper cleaning is must

It is crucial to stick to the washing, sanitising, and maintenance guidelines while using nebulizers. Clean the nebulizer tubes and mouthpiece with ethanol or sterile water. Ensure that everything is air dried. If not cleaned well, nebulizers may be contaminated with bacteria that can lead to an infection which can be quite harmful, especially for someone who has issues in lungs.

Challenging task!!

Children should remain still for 15 to 20 minutes while they inhale the medication. It is not easy to make your kid sit still for a long time with a mouth piece on. It can make them frustrated. Therefore, you have to put some effort into making it enjoyable by reading stories, singing, or giving them their favourite toys.

How does cold and cough affect the immunity of a kid?

Children catch cold or cough, when a virus comes in contact with the lining of the nose and throat. There are more than two hundred different viruses causing cold and cough in children, but the Rhinovirus is the most common offender. The symptoms include stuffy or runny nose, sneezing and coughing. However, flu symptoms are more severe than cold and include fever, headache, sore throat, congestion. Every time when kids get infected with a specific virus, their immune system develops antibodies, which help them to fight against it next time. But there are lots of different viruses, so it takes time to build an effective immune system. Many times, taking medicines through nebulizers can give immediate relief but affect the immunity of a child negatively.

WHAT IS ASTHMA (BREATHING PROBLEM)??

The chronic inflammatory condition of the lungs is asthma. It causes the airways to become constricted and swollen, which causes breathing problem. Additionally, it makes it challenging and occasionally impossible to engage in any daily physical tasks.

To understand how asthma affects the lungs, let’s first understand how normal respiration takes place. When you breathe, the air goes from your nose or mouth, passes through the throat, into the airways and finally into the lungs. Inside the lungs, there are so many air passages that deliver the oxygen from the lungs into the bloodstream. When the muscles surrounding your airways constrict and the lining of your airways expands, symptoms of asthma develop. The amount of air that can pass through is then further diminished as mucus fills the airways. The coughing and chest tightness that are symptomatic of an asthma “attack” can then arise from all these circumstances.

GENERAL SYMPTOMS OF ASTHMA

The most typical asthmatic symptom is wheezing. Basically, wheezing is a crackling or whistling sound that happens during breathing. Other symptoms of asthma include coughing while laughing or exercising, chest tightness, difficulty in talking, anxiety, chest pain, exhaustion, fast breathing, more recurrent infections, and trouble sleeping.

Children’s asthma may initially be brought on by an allergy. They may develop asthma as a result of a respiratory infection or family history, or they may be allergic to pollen, pet hair, dust mites, or saliva.

SYMPTOMS:

Children with asthma may sometimes have rapid breathing patterns, tightness in the chest, breathing problem, heavy coughing, wheezing noises, difficulty feeding, sluggishness, feeble cries, and blue or pale skin or nails.

When to see the doctor?

If you find any following symptoms in your child, then immediately contact the doctor.

How common is melasma and who is at risk?

Melasma is a relatively prevalent skin condition that affects more women (especially 15 to 50% of pregnant women) than men.It generally begins between the ages of 20 and 40. Melasma can appear on any portion of your skin that is exposed to the sun. It’s also known as “pregnancy mask” or “chloasma.” Dark pigmentation of the skin usually lasts until the end of the pregnancy, but it can sometimes last longer. Melasma is less likely to impact fair-skinned persons than deeper brown skinned people or those who tan easily.

What happens to the skin?

Our skin is made up of three layers. The epidermis is the outermost layer, the dermis is the intermediate layer, and the subcutis is the deepest layer. Our epidermis contains cells called melanocytes that store and produce a dark colour (pigment) known as melanin. Melanocytes produce more melanin in reaction to light, heat, UV radiation, or hormone stimulation, which is why our skin darkens. Pregnant women have increased levels of the hormones estrogen and progesterone. Hence, these hormones are thought to contribute to melasma. The darker colour usually fades after pregnancy.

Types of melasma/Pigmentation on skin:

Melasma is divided into three categories based on the depth of the pigmentation on skin.

1.    Epidermal:

Epidermal melasma has a dark brown colour, a well-defined border, appears obvious under black light and sometimes responds well to treatment.

2.    Dermal:

Dermal melasma has a light brown or bluish colour, a blurry border, appears no differently under black light and doesn’t respond well to treatment.

3.    Mixed melasma:

Mixed melasma, which is the most common of the three, has both bluish and brown patches, shows a mixed pattern under blacklight and shows some response to treatment.

Causes of melasma:

There are two main causes of melasma: radiation, whether ultraviolet, visible light, or infrared (heat) light; and hormones. Ultraviolet and infrared radiation from the sun is key in making melasma worse. Other possible causes of skin melasma include:

  • Anti Seizure medications:
  • Pregnancy:
  • Hormones:
  • Contraceptive therapy (birth control):
  • Genetics:
  • LED Screens like television, laptop, cell phone and tablet.
  • Skincare products:

Signs of melasma:

Melasma causes light brown, dark brown, and/or bluish patches or freckle-like spots on your skin. Sometimes the patches can become red or inflamed. Skin melasma appears in six locations or a combination of locations on your skin:

Types of MelasmaLocations on skin
BrachialAppears on shoulders and upper arms.
CentrofacialAppears on your forehead, cheeks, nose and also upper lip.
Lateral Cheek patternAppears on both cheeks.
MalarAppears on your cheeks and nose.
MandibularAppears on the jawline.
Neck Appear on all sides of the neck.

What are the Foods for Healthy Skin?

foods healthy skin Iyurved

“No beauty cream will make your skin beautiful if you don’t start eating healthy”. Our skin is the body’s largest organ, and it is subjected to a variety of chemical, physical, bacterial, and fungal strikes. We are all aware that probiotics and prebiotic can help with a variety of health issues, either directly or indirectly. Another surprising aspect is that these probiotics and prebiotic have a high potential for preventing and treating skin-related issues such as dryness or eczema, acne, ageing, skin hypersensitivity, UV damage, or allergic inflammation. Let us find out how probiotics and prebiotic acts as foods for healthy skin.

Every person’s skin requires a steady, balanced microbiota. There’s a significant probability your microbiome is out of balance if your skin isn’t looking or feeling as healthy and fresh as it used to. Everyone, especially those with a damaged skin barrier or sensitivity, can benefit from the beneficial assistance that prebiotics provide.

WHATSAPP for concerns like Speech Delay, Low Weight, Frequent Illness, Hyperactivity, Low Concentration, Weak Eyesight, Improper Sleep, Pigmentation, Pores, Face Marks, Fine Lines, Lactation etc.

What are probiotics?

Probiotics are live bacteria naturally occurring in food that are good for you, your digestion and your GUT. These are those good bacteria that help you fight off diseases causing bad bacteria and restore the balance of both. Food habits, stress, lifestyle and antibiotics, all of them impact the gut health of your body.

Also check here: What are probiotic foods for gut health?

What are prebiotics?

Prebiotics are a type of dietary fiber that humans cannot digest but the gut bacteria can. Prebiotic is a source of food for your gut’s friendly bacteria. It is a food which does not get fully digested in the body and reaches the large intestine (commonly known as GUT). The good bacteria in the large intestine eat this food and flourishes.

Prebiotics should not be confused with probiotics. Each has their separate role in the battle for better gut health, where probiotics are the friendly bacteria, prebiotics in foods are food for these bacteria.

Also check here: Understand the role of prebiotics in foods for health

how pre-probiotic foods are for healthy skin:

Each part of your body has its own microbiome, which is made up largely of beneficial viruses, fungi, and bacteria. Bacteria can aid in the promotion of skin health by preventing infections from becoming more serious. When the environment becomes unbalanced, it can lead to a variety of skin problems. This is when microbiome skin care enters the picture. According to current studies, pre and probiotics can aid in the prevention and treatment of a variety of skin disorders.

1. Acne:

As we age, the pH of our skin rises, which disrupts the skin barrier, causing it to dry out and allowing more bad bacteria to grow. Apart from this, hyperkeratinization, excess sebum production and bacteria colonization are also responsible for acne formation. When it comes to acne, it is critical to soothe the inflammation, keep the skin hydrated, consume foods for healthy skin and improve the skin barrier. Prebiotics are an effective treatment for certain types of acne breakouts. Probiotics aid in the removal of acne-causing bacteria from the skin, while prebiotics aid in the completion of the task. Aside from that, research shows that certain probiotics help to increase the skin’s ceramide (lipid) production, which traps moisture and keeps the skin hydrated, as well as improve the skin’s barrier functions and bacteria levels.

2. Ageing and UV radiation:

Many intrinsic factors, such as genetics and hormones, as well as extrinsic factors, such as environmental, stress, diet, and lifestyle, contribute to skin ageing. The changes in skin ageing include an increase in skin pH and a decreased ability to quench reactive oxygen species. Healthy, normal skin has a slightly acidic pH in the range of 4.2-5.6, which helps to prevent pathogenic bacterial colonization, regulate enzyme activity, and maintain a moisture-rich environment. A few topical probiotics improve moisture absorption and help to delay the signs of ageing. Lactic acid, one of the probiotics, reduces wrinkles, tightens pores, and exfoliates the skin. This, in turn, aids in the improvement of dull skin and the nourishing of sun-damaged skin.

3. Strengthen the Skin Barrier:

We’ve seen what these beneficial microorganisms can do for your skin. Apart from that, prebiotics play a significant role in protecting and strengthening our skin barrier. In your skin’s microbiome, you’ll find the good bacteria that play a key part in maintaining a healthy barrier function. Probiotics help to maintain a healthy balance of bacteria in the skin microbiome, which helps to strengthen and protect your skin barrier. A robust skin barrier protects against UV rays, pollution, and other factors. In addition, probiotics also minimize the risk of infection and increase the skin’s barrier capabilities against harmful germs, pollutants, and free radical damage.

4. Soothes Skin:

Prebiotics have a number of beneficial features, including the ability to relieve skin irritation, rash, redness, and inflammation. These are mild and help to improve sensitive skin. Ceramide levels are lower in those with eczema, thus replenishing them is crucial. Pre and probiotics have been shown in studies to aid with eczema relief and skin suppleness.

5. Promote Healthy Scalp:

Yes! Yes, you read that correctly. These beneficial bacteria not only keep the skin healthy, but also the scalp. Probiotics aid in the relief of irritations and the restoration of hair health. One study found that consuming probiotics led to thicker, shinier, and glossy hair.

Overall, prebiotics and probiotics have a strong relationship with your skin and hair. Probiotics, or beneficial bacteria, maintain the skin and hair healthy, while prebiotics assist these bacteria in doing their duties without fail. Consumption of these foods (Probiotics and Prebiotic) on a regular basis helps in maintaining healthy skin.

How to Avoid Frequent Infection in Kids?

infection in kids Iyurved

Our body is constantly communicating with us in its own language. We need to observe and understand the sign language that our body speaks to us. Come let’s understand. The collection of bacteria that resides in the gut is called the gut microbiome and has positive effects on behaviour, appetite, immunity (avoiding frequent infection in kids), digestive health and metabolism. Although most people think of bacteria as a bad word, human cells and bacteria live in close proximity and have a mutually beneficial connection.

Probiotics are live bacteria naturally occurring in food that are good for you, your digestion and your GUT. These are those good bacteria that help you fight off diseases causing bad bacteria and restore the balance of both. Food habits, lifestyle and antibiotics, all of them impact the gut health of your body. Your body loses good bacteria when you fall sick and take antibiotics. At this time probiotics can help to maintain the amount of good bacteria in the gut again.

Each have their separate role in the battle for better gut health, where probiotics are the friendly bacteria, prebiotics in foods are food for these bacteria. (What are some foods for healthy gut?)

Benefits of prebiotics:
  • Consumption of prebiotics increases the useful gut flora, which synthesize the B complex vitamins.

How gut health helps in reducing frequent infection in kids?

The best gift you can ever give to your child is a healthy body and strong immunity to fight infections. Immunity plays a major role and it can be achieved by feeding some foods for immunity boost. For the world, 2020 was all about immunity. We had never dreamt about going through such trying medical and emotional conditions. It taught us that in some situations science and medicine fail to help us as spontaneously as our own immunity can. Now the question arises: How to increase immunity in children?

Your GI tract houses a large amount of your immune system. The gut contains approximately 70% of the immune system. According to the studies, it is critical for the body’s health to maintain a delicate balance in the immune system by eliminating invading pathogens while also maintaining self-tolerance to avoid autoimmunity.

What is the immune system?

Our immune system is critical in protecting our bodies from harmful invaders. Immune cells serve as your body’s first line of defense, identifying and neutralizing harmful substances that enter the body. When this system in the body is functioning properly, your kid’s bodies do not feel anything. However, if this system is not robust, your child is likely to become ill on a regular basis.

Gut health and immunity:

The immune system’s job is to keep the body healthy and protect it from viruses and bacteria. What about gut microbes (prebiotics and probiotics), and how do they play a role?

The immune system shapes the bacteria variety, and the gut has an impact on the immune system’s strength and growth. Other factors, such as nutrition, environment, and lifestyle behaviours, affect the composition of the gut flora throughout time. When everything is in order, the stomach sends out signals that encourage the development of good immunological function, which modulates immune responses. In exchange, the immune system aids in the proliferation of health-promoting bacteria in the microbiome. When you acquire an infection, it’s a symptom that your system is out of balance due to nasty germs. At this moment, good bacteria assists in the elimination of the bad bacteria and the restoration of the good bacteria equilibrium. Thus, overall gut health improves children’s ability to fight infections and reduces the frequency of infection in kids.
