what is gluten free means: A guide to a Gluten free Diet for Kids

What is gluten free means? Is a gluten free diet advisable for kids? Before answering this question let us understand the meaning of gluten and gluten free diet. Gluten is a protein found naturally in certain grains including wheat, barley, spelt and rye. There are two main proteins in gluten: glutenin and gliadin. Gliadin is responsible for the adverse health effects of gluten. The name gluten is derived from the glue-like property of this protein. When the flour mixes with water, the gluten protein forms a sticky texture that has glue like consistency. A gluten free diet is an eating plan that excludes foods containing gluten.

Why a Gluten free diet for kids?

Gluten is not harmful and unhealthy. Avoiding or cutting gluten from your kid’s diet would not make your child feel better, however kids with certain health conditions are advised to avoid gluten or have a gluten free diet.

If the child is suffering from Celiac Diseases or gluten intolerance, should stick to a gluten free diet. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that causes damage to the small intestine’s lining due to eating gluten. People suffering from this disorder experience unpleasant symptoms after eating gluten rich foods like bread or pasta. Whereas gluten intolerance is the body’s inability to digest or break down gluten. Some people have gluten intolerance with mild sensitivity to gluten while others may have celiac disease.

Symptoms of celiac disease

Children with celiac disease may have the symptoms like weight loss, vomiting, abdominal pain and bloating, diarrhea or constipation and in some cases delayed puberty(How to deal with puberty in girls?). Kids with a family history of celiac disease are at higher risk. If you feel your child has any symptoms of celiac disease or gluten intolerance, call your doctor and go for the test he/ she suggests.

Treatment

Currently the only way to treat celiac disease is to avoid gluten. A lifelong strict gluten-free diet is the only available treatment for celiac disease. Parents should take extra care of kids with this disorder, as it is very difficult for kids to understand and follow the restricted diet. Make everybody around them aware of the fact like their teachers, school staff and friends.

Some foods are naturally gluten-free and some made gluten-free through a process of purification. There are several foods that are naturally gluten-free, such as rice, corn, potatoes and a number of different grains, seeds and legumes. Historically, rice, corn and potatoes have been the first natural substitutes for gluten-containing grains.

Gluten containing cereals:

Some foods that naturally contains gluten and should be avoided by a person or child suffering from celiac disease or have gluten intolerance are:

  • Wheat
  • Barley
  • Rye
  • Kamut
  • Malt
  • Triticale
Gluten free foods:

Gluten free foods are often low nutrients, as opposed to their gluten containing equivalents. Kids with celiac disease need to avoid gluten, they cannot eat many foods which are often good sources of minerals and vitamins. So, in order to make sure that your child gets all the nutrients despite the gluten free diet, meet with a registered dietitian nutritionist. A dietitian can work with you and your child to develop a gluten-free, balanced eating plan. Here are some naturally gluten free foods with their benefits.(Nutrients a child require?)

Vegetables:

Veggies like carrots, tomatoes, beetroot, broccoli, peas and other leafy greens are mostly gluten free. These veggies are a great source of vitamin A, C, E, fiber, iron and antioxidants. Vegetables are often a good source of prebiotic fiber that supports a healthy gut and immune system by becoming the food of the good bacteria living in the gut. Encourage your child to eat a variety of vegetables so that they do not face any mineral or vitamin deficiency due to a such diet. (Power foods for kids)

Fruits:

Fruits are one of the gluten free foods. Fruit provides vitamins, minerals, dietary fiber and many phytonutrients (nutrients naturally present in plants), which helps kids’ bodies to stay healthy. Fruits being rich in antioxidants boost a child’s immunity and give sustainable energy which is specially required when the child is on a special diet. It also ensures kids healthy growth and development. High in fiber contents it aids in proper functioning of the digestive system and thus prevents constipation. Fruits also provide a wide range of health- boosting antioxidants, including flavonoids.(fruits for teens and kids)

Nuts and seeds:

Apart from being gluten free foods, Nuts and seeds are among the best foods with protein to meet the daily requirement of the body. They are packed with antioxidants, protein, calcium, fiber, potassium, healthy fats like omega 3 and 6 (Why Omega 3 is important?). They are considered super healthy for brain development in children, nuts also help keep their immune system strong. (Why to include nut and seeds daily to a kid’s diet?)

Whole Grains:

Except for a few whole grains which contain gluten, rest are naturally gluten free. However when you are purchasing gluten free whole grains, always check the labels, because even gluten free gains can be contaminated with gluten, if they are processed in the same facility as gluten containing foods. Some of the gluten free whole grains are: quinoa, rice, brown rice, sorghum, millet, amaranth, teff, arrowroot, oats and buckwheat. Whole grains are nutritious foods for kids as they are powerhouse of energy and rich in carbohydrates, protein, iron, fiber, iodine, magnesium, zinc, folate, riboflavin and vitamin E. All these nutrients help in overall growth and development of kids.

From digestion to immunity, from hair to nails, everything requires protein. Some such sources of protein are: legumes (beans, lentils, peanuts, and peas), fresh fish, tofu, red meat, fresh chicken and egg. (Some easy sources of protein)

Hyper pigmentation: Here’s all you need to know

Who doesn’t love their skin? We all love our skin and do care for that. It’s a universal desire to have flawless skin. Yet, sometimes we find ourselves at a stage where we struggle to meet our skin expectations. Hyper pigmentation, undoubtedly is the most common skin issue that is faced across the world especially, in most of the women in their 30s. Hyper pigmentation isn’t necessarily a condition but the change in the colour of the skin which is usually harmless.

The colour differences of the skin in humans are mainly due to the natural pigment granules present and the amount of the melanin produced. Melanin is pigment which is made by the cells in the skin which provides coloration to the skin and is responsible for the hyper pigmentation too. The light and the dark skin complexion depend on the amount of the melanin produced in your body. Moreover, it protects the human skin from the UV light radiation.

What is hyper Pigmentation?

Pigmentations means the patches of skin that gets darker as compared to the surrounding area. This happens when the skin generates more melanin. All types of the skin are affected with this. There are a lot of factors that could cause skin pigmentation which include Genes, Skin damage, Injuries, Acnes or disorders. (Which foods can help to get best skin for lifetime?)

You will be surprised to know that the secret remedies for hyper pigmentation are right in your kitchen. Although, this might sound quite skeptical but your skin health depends a lot on what you consume. Scroll down to understand the scientific lens of pigmentation and know more about the foods and remedies for pigmentation.

Types of Pigmentation:

The common skin pigmentation types are mainly divided into 4 depending on the cause.

Melasma:

This is ubiquitous among women. It is also called the “Mask of Pregnancy”. This type of pigmentation occurs deeper in the skin dermis. The probable causes include hormonal changes which may develop during pregnancy. This can become worse when there is a high amount of sun exposure, stress or medication. These pigments are large brown patches (darker skin) and tend to appear mostly on the stomach, forehead and face. These patches have indistinct borders which can be a way of identification of this type.

Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH):

PIH is a type of pigmentation that occurs as a response to any skin injury, inflammation, acne, eczema, burns, frictions or some clinical treatments. Darkened skin or patches or maybe even spots show out as a result of this. This remedy is usually treated with tropical products. PIH can be improved with time although it can recur. They appear most of the time on the face and neck.

Sunspots:

Sunspots are also known as Solar Lentigines or Age spots. This occurs when the skin is exposed to sun in excess over the period. Sunspots are more of an age defined pigmentation which appears on hands, face or the areas overexposed UV. The spots, here, vary from light brown to black as the degree of the colour depends on how much these melanin pigments are exposed to UV light. If seen on a larger scale, these pigmentations must be monitored as there are probable chances for that to develop into melanoma or skin cancer.

Freckles:

The most prevalent type of pigmentation is Freckles. This occurs commonly with people having fair complexions. These are the tiny little dots that appear on your face due to the repeated exposure to sunlight. Freckles, to some extent, are influenced by heredity. They are more prominent in the summer and become light during the colder weather.

Causes of hyper Pigmentation:

As discussed earlier, the basic and the most common cause of skin pigmentation is the excess production of Melanin pigment. In addition, certain medications, pregnancy, hormonal changes can also result in pigmentation. The areas affected by skin pigmentation majorly include face, neck, hands, knees and elbows. There can be the various causes for the occurrence of skin pigmentation of which few are listed below –

  • Excess sun exposure
  • Medication
  • High production of melanin
  • Allergies
  • Heredity of skin pigmentation
  • Inflammatory Diseases
  • Aging
  • Pregnancy or hormonal causes
  • Chemical or physical injury
  • Frequent exposure to some cosmetic product
Remedies for Pigmentation:

Pigmentation on skin causes loss of confidence in many of them. So, apart from the cosmetic procedures and creams for the treatment of hyper pigmentation, there are numerous ways in which you can lighten the skin pigmentation at home using natural remedies. Few of the remedies are anecdotal, but research suggests that the actives present in the ingredients work on hyper pigmentation. If a person wishes to try any home remedy, first they should always try it on a small patch of the skin to know the suitability. Mentioning, some of the remedies for pigmentation below-

Apple cider vinegar:

Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) is one of the admirable skin lightening agents for unwanted pigmentation. ACV consists of acetic acid and polyphenols. The former part acts as a mild chemical peel in some cases and the latter one acts as an antioxidant that helps protect skin cells. The remedy can be used as – Mix equal parts of apple cider vinegar and water and apply it to the pigmented area. Keep it for 3-5 mins and rinse with lukewarm water. Avoid contact with the eyes and use higher concentrations.

Aloe Vera:

Aloe Vera is the king when it comes to skin. Aloin or Aloesin is the active ingredient that is present in Aloe Vera. This active could work effectively in reducing pigmentation over time. Moreover, it is also responsible for soothing and moisturizing the skin. The Fresh Aloe Vera or the Aloe Vera gel must be applied on the pigmented areas twice a day. The skin absorbs the actives and makes the skin soft. (How to treat heat rash?)

Yogurt or milk:

Another natural product that you may find in your kitchen is dairy products. Milk, Yogurt and even buttermilk contains lactic acid which tends to be effective in lightening the skin colour. As it is a dairy product, it also helps to rectify the Ph imbalances. The usage of any of these to reduce pigmentation is quite easy – Soak a cotton ball in the dairy product you wish to. Rub it over the pigmented skin twice a day. Let it rest for 10 min and rinse. You can also add honey or turmeric to it for better results.

Papaya:

Papaya is considered as a natural exfoliant as it contains fruit acid and enzyme, papain being the major one. It helps in breaking down the skin cells in and improves the skin by breaking the topmost layer of the skin. Papaya is rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants which helps reduce the age spots on the skin. Grate the papaya or blend it and apply the juice on the skin, rest it for 15 mins and rinse. Apply daily for a month to notice the changes. (Which foods can help to keep liver healthy?)

Lemon cucumber:

Together, lemon and cucumber are great ingredients for skin pigmentation. Vitamin C plays the major role here. These exfoliate, lighten and moisturize the skin. This combination is also suitable for oily skin. First, blend the slices of cucumber and add a few drops of lemon into it. Apply it to the skin and leave for around 20 mins. Usage of this remedy, twice a day for a month can leave your skin amazing.

Turmeric:

Turmeric has been used to treat skin disorders since ancient times. The major active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin. It has antibacterial properties and acts as a bleaching agent. Besides, to some extent it’s been shown to reduce the melanin production in the skin thus reducing the skin pigmentation. Daily apply turmeric mixed with lemon juice or raw milk on the skin for 20 mins and rinse with cold water. (How to use immunity powder?)

Natural Remedies for different type of Allergy

Allergies are the major cause of sickness in most of the children and it is disheartening for the parents to see their child suffering. Though it is not possible for parents to control or prevent it fully but early detection of type of allergy can enhance the child’s quality of life, and decrease the number of missed school days and help parents reduce their leaves from work to take care of the child. An allergic disease affects about 35% of all children and has been increasing in recent years.

What are allergies?

Allergies are abnormal reactions from your immune system to things that are usually harmless to most people. Our immune system protects us from harmful organisms that cause illness. If you have an allergy that means your immune system mistakes a harmless substance as an invader. There are various substances that can cause different type of allergy or allergic reactions like some foods, dust, plants, pollens, or medicines and these substances are called allergens.

Why do allergies occur?

It is not known why people have different type of allergy. Inheritance can be one reason. If your close family member has allergies, you can be at higher risk of having them. There are also some substances that cause an allergic reaction. When the immune system fights with allergens thinking it will harm the body and it causes symptoms on the body which can range from mild to fatal at times. To defend the body, the immune system makes antibodies called immunoglobulin E (IgE) and these antibodies can cause certain cells to release chemicals into the bloodstream. The release of these chemicals is what causes the allergic reactions and it can affect eyes, nose, throat, lungs, skin and gastrointestinal tract. In future, if the body gets exposed to the same allergen, the reactions trigger again.

Some type of allergy are seasonal which means that they occur at a specific time of the year (when pollen count is high) while other allergies can happen when a person comes in contact with an allergen.

In children, skin allergies are most common followed by food allergies and respiratory allergies.

What are some of the common allergens?
  • Skin allergies are caused by dust, dirt, dyes or mold.
  • Air borne allergens are the most common which are carried through the air and include dust mites, pollens, pets and cockroaches.
  • Food allergies are caused by food allergens like cow’s milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, peanuts, soy and wheat.
  • Insect allergies can cause swelling, redness and itching at the site of the bite.
  • Few medicines can also cause allergic reactions.
  • Chemicals in dyes, household cleaners and pesticides also act as allergens.
What are the symptoms?

The type or severity of symptoms may vary from person to person and allergy to allergy.

Skin allergies can cause redness, rashes, eczema, hives and contact dermatitis and can be painful and irritating for your child.

whereas type of Airborne allergy can cause allergic rhinitis, which mostly develops by the age of 10 in kids, reaches its peak in teens and early twenties and often disappears between the ages of 40-60. Symptoms may include sneezing, itchy nose, sore throat, stuffy nose and coughing.

Food, medicines or insect allergies cause wheezing, trouble in breathing, coughing, hoarseness, throat tightness, stomachache, vomiting, diarrhea, hives, swelling and itchy, watery or swollen eyes.

How to diagnose allergies?

For skin allergies, your doctor will ask for the medical history of your child and family to identify a potential allergen. If required, the doctor might conduct a patch test or a skin prick test. In both these tests, a small amount of allergen is introduced in the skin to check for any allergic reaction. If diagnosed with a skin allergy, your pediatrician will prescribe an ointment or a gentle skin cleanser for your child’s skin allergy treatment.

If your child has cold-like symptoms which last for longer than a week or two or develops a cold at the same time every year, then your doctor might diagnose an allergy and prescribe some medications. Skin tests and blood tests are conducted to find the cause of an allergy.

To detect food allergies early in toddlers, paediatricians advise introducing one new food to the baby at a time. Maintain a food diary and note down the food along with the date when you first gave it to your child and note down any discomfort or allergies that the child developed.

Home remedies for allergies:

Although there is no specific cure for allergies, the symptoms can be managed either by avoiding the allergen or taking proper medications. Few home remedies for allergies are mentioned below:

Saline nasal solution:

Nasal solution has been found to reduce the effects in both children and adults as it helps to clean mucus from the nose.

HEPA filters:

Acupuncture:

Acupuncture has shown positive results in both seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis

Honey:

Honey is one of the best naturally available home remedies for different type of allergy. It contains amino acids, vitamins and antioxidants which helps in healing. According to a theory, eating locally manufactured honey might reduce your allergic reaction over time to the pollen that the bees collect in your area to make their honey. But in some cases, when the honey is produced, it might get contaminated with bee pollen and pollen from other plants like buckwheat, tulips and sunflower. In case you are allergic to pollen, so you might also become allergic to honey.

Air Conditioners and Humidifiers:

Air conditioners and humidifiers can lower the growth of mildew and mold that cause allergies.

How do Probiotics rich foods help with Sneezing or Skin Allergy?

Up to 40% of the worlds population (an upward trend!) suffers from some form of allergy. Nut allergy, sneezing, itchy eyes, runny nose, eczema and many others. Allergies occur when the immune system overreacts to substances that are usually harmless, such as foods, pollen etc. At least 10% of children around the world have eczema. Probiotics rich foods help to resume the disrupted immune system and fix allergies.

The chances to develop allergies are largely genetically determined. Study shows that 12% of children with no family history of allergy, 30% to 50% of children with a single parental allergy and 60% to 80% of children with biparental allergies will develop allergic disease.

Food allergies

While peanut allergies are what parents hear about the most — which makes sense given that the number of kids with peanut allergies has tripled in the past 15 years — there are other foods that are most likely to trigger an allergic reaction in children- cow’s milk, wheat, soy, egg, fish. Food allergy is different from food intolerance. A child might feel bloated or gassy after having a milk product, but that could be a sign of an intolerance to lactose. However, in case of allergy, the reaction will be much stronger like extreme gut pain or vomiting or even more serious. The good news is that most children will outgrow their food allergy. Approximately 85 percent of allergies to cow’s milk, soy, egg and wheat will resolve by the time the child is 8 years old.

allergy and immune system

An allergic reaction is an immune system response to a particular food protein. 70-80% of immune cells are located in the gut (large intestine). This is also home to 100 trillion bacterias (gut microorganisms). There is enough research linking bacterias to immunity. The shift in lifestyle, rising pollution, use of antibiotics, and processed food consumption has all together impacted the quality of bacterias in our gut. This has contributed to compromised immunity in kids and adults.

Studies state that a lack of diversity in the gut bacterias can also be associated to allergies- seasonal or nut allergies. Children who are exposed to antibiotic or medication soon after birth, increase the chances of developing allergies early on. (Read about peanut allergy)

The good news is that our immune system can be modified from as early as pregnancy to infancy and further as we age. A well developed immune system ensures the maintenance of health for infants and children, throughout life. (What other foods help with immunity?)

probiotics

This is one way to resume the disrupted immune system. Probiotics rich foods are live bacteria found in certain additional food like fermented rice or bean, wine, buttermilk, kefir, kombucha, yogurt, miso, kimchi, aged cheese, pickled vegetables. We provide these bacteria home, and in return they extract vitamins and minerals from food for our body’s healthy functioning.
