5 foods that help your child in sleeping well

Is your child facing difficulty in falling asleep? Do they often wake up multiple times during the night? Are they getting the recommended amount of sleep according to their age? Do you think your child is not sleeping well because of anxiety issues?

A proper night sleep is one of the most important factors in your kids overall development and an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. A decent sleep can make a positive impact on your child’s entire day. When your body does not have enough rest or sleep you may feel cranky and irritated but when it comes to kids, the effects of sleep deprivation (insufficient sleep) can lead to numerous developmental issues. Kids need to get enough night sleep so they can achieve their necessary growth milestones, play, learn and perform well. Not just for routine chores, but also for the brain to function at its best, it has to be well rested.

Studies have shown that kids who regularly get adequate amounts of sleep have improved attention, behaviour, learning, memory and most importantly, mental and physical health. Sleep disorder leaves a negative impact on brain development. Most of a baby’s brain development happens during night sleep. 10 days of 6 hours sleep, leads to a 400% dip in concentration. Most of the kids don’t get enough sleep as they are often busy with school, studies, sports and other activities.

WHATSAPP for concerns like Speech Delay, Low Weight, Frequent Illness, Hyperactivity, Low Concentration, Weak Eyesight, Improper Sleep, Pigmentation, Pores, Face Marks, Fine Lines , Lactation etc.

Foods to help kids in sleeping well

Nuts

Nuts like almonds, walnuts, pistachios and cashews are often considered to be a good food source for sleep. They contain melatonin (sleep hormone) as well as magnesium, vitamin B6, protein and zinc. Magnesium is helpful in promoting sleep because of its ability to reduce inflammation (body heat). The level of stress hormone cortisol, which is known to interrupt sleep, can be reduced by including nuts in your diet.

Pumpkin seeds

A study published in 2005 in Nutritional neuroscience suggested that consuming tryptophan alongside a carbohydrates source is one of the best ways to treat sleep deprivation. Pumpkin seeds may be small but they are packed with valuable nutrients. They are rich in healthy fats, magnesium, fiber, antioxidants and zinc. If your kid has trouble sleeping, give a few pumpkin seeds before bed with small amounts of carbohydrates such as a piece of fruit. It may be beneficial in providing the body with tryptophan needed for melatonin production, which can lead to better sleep. For younger kids, powdered pumpkin seeds can be an option.

Chamomile:

Chamomile is considered to be a safe and effective way to help a child relax. It’s a dried flower. These flowers are white and yellow and look like beautiful little daisies. Native to Europe and Asia. For centuries, it has been used for medicinal purposes to calm the mind and mildly induce sleep. It Improves relaxation and relieves stress, reduces anxiety, promotes sleep and relieves insomnia.

Lemon balm:

Lemon balm extracts: A Phytomedicine Compound Improves Symptoms of Hyperactivity, Attention Deficits, and Impulsivity in Children. As per the study conducted by NIH, The fraction of children having strong/very strong symptoms of poor ability to focus decreased from 75% to 14%, hyperactivity from 61% to 13%, and impulsiveness from 59% to 22%. Parent rated social behavior, sleep and symptom burden showed highly significant improvements.

Antioxidants:

Pure Cocoa powder (unsweetened) contains brain boosting components as it is packed with a large number of antioxidants molecules, the main is epicatechin which is helpful to improve cognition in studies. Hence, cocoa powder is also an important brain development food for children.

Foods to avoid

Refined sugar: Sugar has been shown to increase restlessness at night and nighttime awakenings. The insulin helps your body to break down the sugar and convert it into energy at a time when your body needs to rest. As a result, you may end up feeling overstimulated and restless due to the excess energy. In a recent study, scientists offered strong evidence that sleep and sugar don’t mix. Moreover, sugar damages the protein in our body, resulting in ageing of organs, which further compromises immunity, growth and functioning.

Preservetives: Most of the packaged food companies are adding artificial preservatives to delay spoilage and contamination in foods.  Artificial preservatives such as nitrates, benzoates, sulfites, sorbates, parabens, formaldehyde, BHT, BHA and several others can cause serious health hazards such as hypersensitivity, allergy, asthma, hyperactivity, neurological damage.

Refined oil: The high temperature involved in the refining process removes all the natural and beneficial substances from the oil, which is not good for the digestive as well as respiratory health and ultimately affects your immunity.

Suspected Causes for Autism: 10 foods that may help

Autism or Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder that affects communication and behavior. Although autism can be diagnosed at any age, it is said to be a “developmental disorder” because symptoms generally appear in the first two years of life. There are many causes for autism in kids and symptoms may vary from child to child. In some kids the symptoms are very mild while in certain cases severe symptoms are high.

Around 50% of the parents of children with autism notice signs by the time their child reaches 12 months and the remaining notice problems by 2 years. Children with ASD may have symptoms throughout their lives, but it’s possible for them to get better as they get older. Based on the most recent report, ASD is estimated to affect about 1 in 54 children, with boys being more likely to have ASD than girls.

Symptoms of autism spectrum disorder:

Kids with Autism have difficulty with social communication, interaction and behavior.  Here is the list of behaviors that are noticed in children diagnosed with Autism.  These Symptoms may vary from person to person.

1) Social communication and interaction

Children with autism find it difficult to interact with people. This is one of the most common symptoms of ASD. You might notice these signs by the age of 10 to 12 months. Other social skill symptoms may also include:

  • Give no response or little response when someone calls their name.
  • Less or no eye contact.
  • Don’t like cuddling or holding. They don’t stretch their arms to be picked up.
  • They prefer to be alone.
  • Difficulty in speaking or speech delay. (Tips to improve speech delay)
  • Their words generally don’t match with their facial expression and gestures.
  • Speak with unusual tones like robotic, flat or singsong voices.
  • Can’t start a conversation or be a part of one.
  • Often speak on their favorite subject without noticing that others are not interested or without giving others a chance to respond.
  • Doesn’t express their feelings and emotions.
2) Behavioral symptoms

Children with autism spectrum disorder may have repetitive patterns of behavior. Some of the common behavioral symptoms are as follows:

  • Repetitive behavior like repeating words or phrases, hand flapping or rocking.
  • Aggressive behavior. Perform activities that could cause self-harm.
  • Easily get upset with slight changes in a routine.
  • Lack of coordination and confidence.
  • Eat only specific foods or are generally fussy eaters.
  • Having overly focused interests, such as with moving objects or parts of objects
  • Over sensitivity to touch, light and sound.
  • Impulsiveness. Usually act without thinking.

Kids with ASD may also find it difficult to sleep. Despite so many challenges, they may have some strength, like they have an ability to learn things in detail and remember information for a long period of time. They are also strong visual and auditory learners.

Causes for autism:

However the exact causes for Autism is still unknown. There is no single cause, research shows that genes and environment can act together to affect the child’s development in the may that leads to ASD. Some most suspected causes or risk factors for  Autism include.

  • Having a sibling with ASD.  When one child is diagnosed with ASD, the next child to come along has about a 20% greater risk of developing autism than normal.
  • Research shows that older parents have a greater likelihood of having a child with autism.
  • Kids with certain genetic conditions such as Down syndrome, Fragile X syndrome and Rett syndrome are most likely to have ASD.
  • Exposure to heavy metals and environmental toxins.
  • Low birth weight.
  • Premature birth and maternal use of valproic acid or thalidomide during pregnancy can also be one of the causes for autism.
Diagnosis:

If you notice any of the above symptoms mentioned above , you must go for a proper diagnosis as recommended by the doctor. While there is no specific laboratory test to determine autism, a team of child psychologist, occupational therapists and speech pathologist do screening and evaluation which may include:

  • Medical exam like blood test, hearing test
  • Gathering information about the symptoms that exist, and from when these symptoms started.
  • Whether these symptoms are affecting their day to day life, or they find it difficult to socialize.
  • Family history of ASD.
  • May also involve interviews or questionnaires for family members, teachers and others close to the child to know the causes for autism
Treatment and therapies:

While there is no cure for ASD, currently available treatments can help reduce symptoms and improve functioning. Treatments include medication, psychotherapy, education or training, or a combination of treatments.

  • A doctor may use medication to treat some symptoms like irritability, aggression, repetitive behavior, hyperactivity, anxiety and attention problems.
  • Behavioral, psychological, educational, or skill-building therapy to build self confidence.
  • Speech-language pathologists are therapists who specialize in treating language problems and speech disorders. They are a key part of the autism treatment team.
  • Find an autism support group. Sharing information and experiences can help children with ASD and/or their caregivers learn about treatment options and ASD-related programs.
Healthy ASD diet for kids:

It is very important to feed kids a nutritious diet from the early years itself, even more important if the child is suffering from ASD. Along with the treatment and therapies a healthy ASD diet for kids including essential nutrients is must, which may help in reducing the symptoms. Experts say whatever is good for the brain is likely to be good for ASD and speech delay. Below is the list of essential nutrients and foods recommended as a part of a healthy ASD diet

Protein:

Protein is an important part of a healthy diet. It builds, maintains and repairs body tissues. It is also essential for brain health and plays an important role in producing neurotransmitters (brain chemical). It’s also integral in forming enzymes and hormones in the body. From digestion to immunity, from hair to nails, everything requires protein. Some foods rich in protein are: nuts and seeds, egg and dairy products.(how to get a protein rich diet?)

Omega 3 fatty acids:

Research has established a link between omega 3 fatty acids and brain development in early childhood. These healthy fats have amazing brain boosting power and play a vital role in enhancing memory and attention span. Fish & walnuts are a very good source of omega 3. (Why is Omega 3 important for your kids?)

Magnesium:

In our body, Magnesium is responsible for nerve transmission and nerve-muscle coordination. In other words, it protects against the excessive excitement in a child (which can be traumatic). There is enough research going on how Magnesium can help in fixing or preventing neurological disorders. Banana, avocado, pumpkin seeds and spinach are some food sources of magnesium.(what are some disorders in which magnesium can help?)

Zinc:

Zinc is considered an essential nutrient which means that the body cannot produce or store it. For this reason, it is very important to add zinc in your daily diet. Zinc is required for proper brain function and development, immune function, protein synthesis, wound healing. Some food sources rich in zinc are: nuts, pumpkin seeds, spinach, chicken, shrimp and kidney beans. (How can zinc help with hair and skin health?)

NUTS:

All the nuts like almonds, walnuts, cashew, peanuts and hazelnuts are rich in vitamin E and help in boosting memory. They are also antioxidants which protect against cell damage. Walnuts are rich in omega 3 fatty acids and are a valuable substance for brain function, memory and thinking abilities. This fatty acid also encourages cognitive functions. ( best nuts for protein)

Seeds:

Apart from nuts, seeds like flex, chia, melon, sesame and pumpkins also contain powerful antioxidants like vitamin E that protect the brain from free radical damage. Sunflower seeds impact overall mood and mental processing powers and therefore it is considered a brain boosting snack. Pumpkin seeds are high in magnesium, copper, and much higher in zinc than other seeds, which help in increasing concentration and memory. One of the easiest to feed brain boosting foods for kids.

COCOA POWDER:

Pure cocoa powder (unsweetened) contains brain boosting components as it is packed with a large number of antioxidants molecules, the main is epicatechin helpful to improve cognition in studies. Hence cocoa powder is also an important brain development food for children. (More benefits of cocoa powder)

Ashwagandha:

Ashwagandha is an adaptogen. It is known to reduce anxiety and stress. Moreover, it increases acetylcholine levels which support better memory, mental focus and intelligence. Ashwagandha also improves communication between nerve cells and stimulates the body’s capacity to heal any nervous system damage.

Brahmi:

Brahmi is a superfood for the brain and is believed to sharpen the brain by protecting cells and increasing chemicals associated with learning and memory. It has shown to improve spatial learning and retaining power in kids. That is why in older times, kids were often given Brahmi powder with ghee/honey. This would increase their focus and attention, while keeping them calm and distressed.

Shankhapushpi:

Shankhapushpi is a traditional remedy for increasing the functioning of the brain. The powerful antioxidants and flavonoids present in it improve the memory capacity, focus, concentration, calmness, alertness of an individual. Since it is a brain tonic and stimulator, people taking shankhapushpi have improved memory, reasoning, problem-solving, and other cognitive abilities.

SCIENTIFICALLY proven studies conducted by NIH

There are many researches by NIH that support the benefits of Ayurvedic herbs in kid’s brain and speech development. Few are as below.

Baby’s milestone: 6 foods that help in walking

The first year of a baby’s life is the most crucial year for their gross motor skill development. Motor skills refer to the body’s ability to manage the process of movement. Gross Motor skills involves baby’s milestone like holding head, sitting, crawling and walking. During her first year, your baby is busy developing coordination and muscle strength in every part of her body.

Babies develop their skills gradually. It’s so overwhelming to see your newborn doing new activities everyday, but these abilities don’t develop overnight. Babies put a lot of effort and handwork to achieve these motor skills. There are a lot of new parents frequently asking questions around baby development including when babies typically hold their head, sit up, roll over crawl and finally walk. So below are some baby’s milestone related these motor skills.

WHATSAPP for concerns like Speech Delay, Low Weight, Frequent Illness, Hyperactivity, Low Concentration, Weak Eyesight, Improper Sleep, Pigmentation, Pores, Face Marks, Fine Lines , Lactation etc.

Baby’s milestone

Head control:

Your baby’s first big milestone is his/her control over the head. Babies are born with fairly weak muscles and they will rely upon you to support their head and neck. By the end of 2 months the baby should be able to lift it slightly and turn from side to side while lying on their stomach. All these little movements help strengthen the baby’s neck muscles. By 6 months generally the baby will be able to hold their head steady and gain control over their neck.

Roll over:

At around 4 months the baby starts to roll over. When you place them on their tummy they will begin to push up on their arm. Tummy to side rolling is most common in babies at this age. By 6 months most babies have gained enough abdominal strength to flip in both directions and roll over from their back to front. Rolling over helps strengthen the upper body and neck muscles that your baby needs to sit up. So always encourage your baby to roll over by placing toys or books near to them, so that they roll over to reach those things.

Sitting:

Holding head control and having enough upper body strength is a must for a baby  before he/ she is able to sit up on their own. At around 5 to 6 months, babies begin to sit with little support. At 9 months babies can sit without any support and easily get in and out of sitting position.

Walking:

Once the baby is comfortable in sitting, the next baby’s milestone is walking. Just like other milestone, walking age also varies between children. Some take their first step around 9 to 12 months while others may take a little longer time i.e around 15 to 17 months. At around 9 months, babies most likely start trying to pull themselves up to stand while holding something like bed or sofa. Soon they also try to take some steps holding from one side of the furniture to the next. They may also be able to stand without support till their first birthday. At 14 months normally most of the babies walk a few steps independently and by the end of 17 months your child will become steadier in his/ her walk.

Causes of delay

Motor skill development of the child is an important aspect in a child’s overall growth and development. But problems in sitting, crawling and walking are the most common developmental delay a child faces. A child with motor skill developmental delay may experience difficulty coordinating certain movements such as holding a pencil, walking and performing activities requiring brain and body coordination. Blow are some of the basic causes of these delays in kids:

  • Premature birth
  • Cerebral Palsy (brain damage before birth)
  • Myopathy (a disease of muscles)
  • Brain injury
  • Ataxia (defective muscle coordination)
  • Problems with vision
  • Spina Bifida (birth defect in the baby that occurs when the spine and spinal cord do not develop completely)

Tips to improve motor skill

Usually a child who is late doing certain activities catches up to other children. But sometimes, developing late is the sign of a health condition. In case a child does not show any of the above mentioned motor skill development on time, talk with your pediatrician. In addition, try these tips mentioned below

  • Give your baby plenty of tummy time.  Lay your baby on his tummy and place the toys he/ she likes in front of them.  It helps strengthen your baby’s arms, legs, torso, as well as his neck muscles.
  • Once the baby gains control over their head, you can encourage them to sit by placing a pillow around them for support. Be careful and stay close to help them if they fall.
  • Try sitting them on the floor while holding their back up straight. This helps improve their muscle control and coordination.
  • Once the baby starts sitting independently, encourage them to crawl. Set up an area on the floor with their favorite toys and things that they can explore and if they don’t crawl to reach out to toys show them how to crawl by doing yourself and ask your baby to imitate.
  • Once your baby pulls himself up and gains balance holding your hands, guide him take a few steps, this will help him gain confidence to take those first steps.
  • When the baby starts balancing and standing for a few seconds, start balancing games. Sit with the baby on the floor and help them stand up. Then count how long they can stay up before falling. Don’t forget to praise after each attempt.
  • Allow your child to be bare feet. There are tiny muscles in the feet that need to be developed. You can do this by bearing weight on them. The muscles in your feet can easily grasp the ground when bare feet.
  • Place their favorite things just out of reach so they have no choice but to try and stand to get it.
  • Bouncing a baby up and down strengthens their lower body and works on their balance. Hold their arms and hands, and assist them in learning to bounce.

Foods to improve motor skill:

As soon as your baby is 6 months, taking care of their diet is imortant, as food or nutrients that they get from food is key for a baby to achieve different milestones on time. Nutrients like protein helps in muscle strengthening, calcium and vitamin d promotes bone health and the most important foods that promote brain healthy like omega 3 fatty acids, as these developments involve the brain and body’s muscles to work together. Below are the foods that help in baby’s milestones like sitting, crawling and walking.

Omega 3:

Research has established a link between omega 3 fatty acids and brain development in early childhood. These healthy fats have amazing brain boosting power and play a vital role in enhancing memory and attention span. Omega-3 fatty acids are considered as critical brain foods that may counteract oxidative stress and inflammations, two drivers of cognitive decline which may also result in motor skill delay.

Pumpkin seeds are high in magnesium, copper, and much higher in zinc than other seeds, which help in increasing concentration, memory and thus helps in better coordination.

Ayurvedic Herbs:

Ayurveda has the potential to not only correct imbalances in our children, but also to set them on an enduring path toward optimal health and well-being. Thus, ayurvedic herbs must be included in the list of health foods for kids. Ayurvedic herbs such as ashwagandha, brahmi, shakhapuspi are great for kids’ development. Overall, these herbs support immunity, bone strength, brain development and overall growth.

Calcium:

It is really important to get strong bones and we get a chance to build them only once – throughout childhood and adolescence. Children who get enough calcium in childhood start their adult lives with the strongest bones possible. Mostly calcium is stored in bones and teeth where it supports their structure and hardness, but the body also needs calcium for muscles to move and for nerves to carry messages between the brain and every body part. Calcium is predominantly found in milk and milk based products like cheese. And is also found in smaller quantities in some nuts and seeds. (Should kids take whey protein?) 7 foods that helps in speech disorder/ delay in kids

That first word from your baby’s tiny mouth takes away all the pains of your sleepless night. There is no word that can describe the euphoria you feel when your baby recognizes you and for the first time says mamma. It’s a milestone that feels like magic. However these days many kids suffer from speech disorder/delay. Lot of parents have plenty of questions about their child’s developing speech skills. Like when do babies utter their first word? When can they hold a conversation? My son is 3 and still not talking!! My 22 month old only saying a few words!! The child speaks less!!

WHATSAPP for concerns like Speech Delay, Low Weight, Frequent Illness, Hyperactivity, Low Concentration, Weak Eyesight, Improper Sleep, Pigmentation, Pores, Face Marks, Fine Lines , Lactation etc.

Feedback from parents

When do babies start talking?

As like other milestones, the age at which baby’s start talking words or sentences may vary. Some start saying words at 9 month while other may start at 1 year. Babies generally archive About 50% of the speech development at around 2 year of age and 75% by 3 years.  Following are the milestone that demonstrates normal speech development:

Birth to 6 months:

A child starts his/ her life with a cry which is a non-verbal communication, and with time starts coos in response to you or your smile. At 4 months your baby will like to babble or even copy your sounds. The sound of cries changes for different needs  whether the baby is  crying out of hunger or in pain.

6 to 12 months:

From 6 months onward the baby try to communicate by action or gestures. Starts recognizing their name, turns and looks at new sounds. Till 12 months baby start making sounds like ma-ma-ma-ma or ba-ba-ba-ba and other similar long sounds. They start talking gibberish like sssbi, ebeedu to participate in conversation. He or she may start to combine his talking with gestures such as pointing to what he or she wants, shaking his or her head to mean ‘no’ or waving ‘bye bye’. In some cases babies start to say proper one words like mama, baba, papa etc. or try to repeat the words he/ she hears from you.

12 to 18 months:

At this age, babies start to follow instructions and understand far more words than he/she can speak. At around this age, the Baby starts to recognize common objects like bottles, cups and plates. Body parts like nose, tummy, ears and mouth etc. also their belongings like recognizing their toys . You will notice your child learning new words every day such as ‘mummy, daddy, ball, teddy, biscuit’, depending on which words he hears often. However, the pronunciation may not be very clear at this stage. As you introduce alphabets to them they try to pronounce them, though not in order but as they want to rhyme it, like abcd, nkipl , lmnop.

18 months to 2 year:

Most of the toddlers will start making short sentences like I want that, mummy come here, I need milk. Sounds and words will be copied more accurately. Also, kids start enjoying rhymes by trying to repeat the lines or actions. By the end of 2nd year your baby may recognize about 200 words and try to make sentences with those words.

2 to 3 year:

The vocabulary keeps on growing. Their speech become more clear or you should be able to understand 75% of what your toddler says. This is the stage where they can tell you about their needs like water, milk or food, also they tell you if they need to go to the toilet. Generally pre-school begins at this age and kids are ready to learn numbers, colours and alphabets.

3 to 5 years:

Their vocabulary reaches upto 500 words. Now they are ready for a simple question and are more expressive through their words. They can tell a short story or if you ask what you did today at school? they should be able to tell you in small sentences. Being correctly using plurals, pronouns and propositions. By the end of 5 year usually, they can carry on conversion.

5 proven natural remedies for diaper rash in babies?

Everything that gives you comfort has its own demerits and one of these is diapers which come with diaper rash.  Diaper rash in babies is quite common among infants and toddlers and can cause great discomfort.

Diaper dermatitis is an inflammatory reaction of the skin around the diaper area. It is the most common skin disorder seen in young infants.  It results due to a combination of multiple factors such as increased moisture, prolonged contact with urine or feces, and other irritants like detergents. Major signs of diaper rash are as below.

WHATSAPP for concerns like Speech Delay, Low Weight, Frequent Illness, Hyperactivity, Low Concentration, Weak Eyesight, Improper Sleep, Pigmentation, Pores, Face Marks, Fine Lines , Lactation etc.

Signs of diaper rash
  • Patchwork of bright red skin on your baby’s buttock.
  • Peeling and scaly skin.
  • Soreness.
  • Blisters or open sores.
  • Pus- filled sores.
  • Fussiness and uncomfortable.
Causes of diaper rash in babies

Dirty diaper:  Dirty diaper is the main culprit of diaper rash in babies. The enzymes in poop can cause irritation in our baby’s sensitive skin and urine releases ammonia which makes these enzymes more active and causes skin damage. There are many nights when parents don’t realize that the baby is in need of diaper change and that prolonged exposure of urine and stool causes diaper rash in kids.

Irritation and friction: Sometimes tight fitting of diapers causes irritation and constant rubbing results in rashes. Friction between the diaper and skin breaks the protective barrier of the skin, even worse when the skin being wet under the diaper.

Yeast infection:  Warm and moist area is the perfect surrounding for bacteria and yeast to grow. A group of fungi called candida normally lives in the skin and can make the normal diaper rash even worse.

Irritants: Baby’s skin is super sensitive and isn’t used to scents, soaps and other products. Diapers and wipes you are using can be the reason for diaper rash in babies. Also the harsh detergent used to wash cloth diapers may cause rashes.

In case of any specific skin condition: Some infants are particularly prone to diaper rash and may get it very frequently, especially if they have an underlying skin condition, such as eczema. ( How to treat eczema?)

Introduction of new foods: Babies take time to adjust with any new food. When the baby starts eating solid foods the content of their stool changes. The frequency of the blow movement may increase, which can lead to diaper rash. Frequent cleaning of the baby’s bottom with water or wipes make it dry out and skin loses its natural moisture which results in diaper rash. (How to introduce solids?)

How to prevent diaper rash

Babies have very delicate skin and even after parent’s best efforts, diaper rash occurs. These basic tips can help hold off diaper rash.

Change the dirty diapers as soon as possible:

The first and the most important step to prevent diaper rash in babies is to change their dirty diapers. Keep checking the diaper often and if required change it immediately. This may reduce the chances of rash to a great extent.

Cleaning:

Properly cleaning the diaper area using warm water or baby wipes that are alcohol and fragrance free, is the second step to avoid diaper rash.  Don’t rub the area as scrubbing or rubbing can further irritate the skin by damaging it. After cleaning, pet the area dry and be sure that the diaper area is completely dry before putting on a fresh diaper.

Give your baby diaper free time:

between every diaper change give your baby some diaper free time. Exposing skin to air is the best natural way to let it heal.

Change the diaper brand or detergent:

If your baby develops a diaper rash frequently, it can be because of the diaper you are using, in that case change your diaper brand immediately. In the case of cloth diapers, harsh detergents used to clean the diapers could also result in diaper rash. Choose the diaper brand and the detergent to wash baby’s clothes carefully.

Take care of the size:

Always make sure that the diaper is not too tight, as it can irritate the sensitive skin of your baby.  Tight diapers can also cause chafing at the waist or thighs. Opt a larger size of diaper with the baby’s growing age.

Using ointment:

Applying ointment during every diaper change prevents your baby from irritation. There are many barrier creams and skin soothing ointments containing zinc oxide and petroleum jelly available in the market, which may help in preventing and healing diaper rash in babies.

When to see a doctor:

Although diaper rash is painful and irritates your baby, it usually clears up with simple prevention tips discussed above at home. However if your baby’s rashes don’t improve after a few days of home treatment you must consult your doctor. These are the cases when you should seek medical help.

  • Rash doesn’t get better even after 5 to 7 days of home treatment.
  • Causes burning sensation or pain with urination and bowel movement.
  • Swelling in the diaper area.
  • If rashes spread beyond the diaper area.
  • Skin around rash bleeds, itches or oozes
  • When you are not sure what is causing rashes
  • Pus or discharge from the rash
  • If your baby develops a fever
  • Rash is accompanied by a bacterial infection.
Home remedies for diaper rash in babies

Diaper rash is annoying and very painful for babies , so it is very important to take some immediate action at home to give them some relief. Here are some home remedies for diaper rash in babies, let’s know why it works and how you are going to apply.

Coconut oil:

Coconut oil helps in protecting and retaining skin hydration with the help of fatty acids present in them. Baby’s skin is quite sensitive. Rashes caused by diapers can be treated with the help of coconut oil. Since coconut oil has soothing and hydrating properties, it reduces the inflammation thus giving relief from itching and irritation. (Home remedies to treat heat rash). Coconut oil also contains lauric acid and other essential fatty acids, it possesses antimicrobial, anti fungal and antiviral properties and thus helps in prevention of further infection. (what are some other benefits of coconut oil?)

Baking soda:

We all know the importance of baking soda for baking, but apart from this it works wonders on diaper rash in babies. It has anti-pruritus effects, which will eliminate the itching and restore the pH balance of the skin, which reduces the inflammation caused by the rash.  Baking soda is both antibacterial and antifungal, making it a great natural solution for any infection. Add Two tablespoons of baking soda in a warm bath, don’t rub the area, just let the baby soak for about 10 minutes, and wipe with a soft washcloth.

Apple cider vinegar:

Apple cider vinegar can be used for many health issues as a home remedy. It cleanses the rash and disinfects it. It has anti- inflammatory properties which help in reducing the redness and pain of the rash. You can dilute a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a cup of water and wash your baby’s bottom with it each time you do a diaper change. ( Other benefits of apple cider vinegar)

Olive oil:

Olive oil contains Vitamin E and Vitamin K. It is also loaded with antioxidants which can help to prevent skin inflammation.  Olive oil acts as a great moisturizer and also improves skin dryness as it is loaded with healthy fats, oleic acids and squalene, it has a regenerative effect on skin tissues. Olive oil effectively treats diaper rash. Take two tbsp. of olive oil and 1 tbsp. of water, mix well and give a gentle massage to the baby’s bum. ( Best oil for baby massage)

Homemade rash cream:

A wide variety of diaper rash creams are available in the market. But if you are sure not to use them, then you can make one for yourself at home by using simple ingredients.

How to make it: Take 1 cup coconut oil, 1 cup olive oil, 8 drops lavender essential oil, 6 drops lemon essential oil and 4 drops of tea tree essential oil. Mix them all together and store it in your refrigerator. Apply every time you change your baby’s diaper.
