Role of Calcium in Growth & Development

CALCIUM FOOD

Have you noticed any delay in your child’s development, weakened bones, or dental problems? Are they experiencing cramping, or fatigue? Are you concerned about their risk of bleeding, bone health, or hormone imbalances?

Insufficient intake of calcium food in children can result in a condition known as hypocalcemia, which is characterized by a deficiency in calcium. This condition is particularly worrisome as it may not present any symptoms in its early stages. However, in the long term, it can lead to dental issues, osteoporosis, and even impaired brain function.

Reasons for a low amount of calcium?

Possible reasons for a low amount of calcium intake include inadequate consumption of calcium food, limited intake of dairy products, poor calcium absorption due to medical conditions or dietary restrictions, and insufficient exposure to sunlight for vitamin D production. Chronic medication use, certain lifestyle choices, ageing, genetic factors, and inadequate supplementation can also contribute to low calcium levels

Techniques to Increase Calcium in growth and development.

1. Include foods high in calcium in your diet, such as dairy items like milk, Yogurt, and cheese. Other calcium food to ingest include leafy greens, fortified cereals, tofu, and almonds.
2. Select goods that are fortified with calcium: Go for calcium-enriched drinks like orange juice or plant-based milk substitutes. These might offer an extra calcium supply.
3. If necessary, take into account supplements: If obtaining the recommended amount of calcium through diet alone is difficult, speak with a healthcare provider who may suggest calcium supplements.
4. Make sure you are getting enough vitamin D. Vitamin D is essential for calcium absorption. Consider taking supplements or spending time in the sun to make vitamin D naturally, especially if sunlight exposure.
5. Maintain well-balanced eating habits: To support general health, including calcium absorption and utilisation, maintain a diet rich in a range of nutrients.

CALCIUM Food sources:

Cow’s milk and its products:

It is the most commonly consumed type of milk and naturally a good source of many nutrients like calcium, protein, phosphorus and Vitamin B2. In several countries, it is fortified with vitamin D because milk doesn’t naturally contain vitamin D, but is one of the most widely used calcium rich foods for kids. These two work together to keep the bones strong. There are some dairy products made of cow’s milk like cheese, yogurt which are a good source of vitamin D

Also check, How is it used in the rest of the world?

Cereals:

In comparison to other natural resources, fortified corn flakes and oat meals or granola mixes may provide less vitamin D, but still they can be a good way to boost the vitamin D levels. These cereals can be consumed together with milk or yogurt to achieve both calcium and vitamin D for the body. The most important check to make here is the sugar levels in the cereal. Added sugar intake can adversely impact calcium and vitamin D levels.

Also check, How does sugar impact bones?

Egg yolk:

Eggs are one of the highest natural sources of vitamin D. Just one whole large egg provides 50% of vitamin D required for the day. It helps to maintain strong bones and teeth. Those who can may opt for fish (salmon, sardines) also as a source of vitamin D.

Banana:

The yummy bananas are a great source of magnesium, which plays an important role in activating vitamin D in the body. Journal of the American osteopathic Association, suggests that- it is essential to consume the recommended amount of magnesium to obtain the optimal benefits of vitamin D. So while bananas don’t have vitamin D directly, it enables absorption. In addition, bananas are also a great source of quick energy (simple carbs) and prebiotic fibre (for digestion) for kids. Win-win!

Moringa:

Moringa is a super food. It has 3 times more calcium than milk which makes it an excellent food to treat weak or damaged bones and also one of the best non dairy sources of calcium. Some studies also indicate that moringa can heal damaged bones thus making it a must have calcium rich foods for bones. Dried moringa leaf powder has 17 times more vitamin D than fortified milk. In addition to this, it’s a fix for digestion troubles, immunity and iron.

Ragi:

Ragi is also one of the foods high in calcium and vitamin D.  It is said that no other plant source provides calcium the way ragi can making it one of a popular non-dairy sources of calcium. Ragi also has vitamin D and along with calcium, it can help in improving bone strength. It is a whole grain that is gluten free also and can be used in baking cakes and cookies.

Mushroom:

Mushrooms are a rich ‘plant’ source of vitamin D. Researchers has found that we can increase levels of vitamin D even more by exposing mushrooms to the sun for 10-15 minutes. Mushrooms can be consumed either directly or also in the form of dried mushroom powder, which can be used throughout the year, even when the season of mushroom has passed. For kids who are picky and don’t particularly enjoy eating mushroom, using the powder is an easy option. You can hide it in any batter or dough to make pancakes, wraps, bread, paratha, pizza.

Reduce background noise, shut off the television, and avoid using electronic gadgets unless they are absolutely necessary for the task at hand. Encourage them, for instance, to leave their phones in a different room while they study until it is finished.

3. Break tasks into smaller chunks : Instead of presenting them with a massive assignment, they should be encouraged to take on one task at a time. Set goals and divide activities into smaller, more doable pieces. For instance, if they have a big task, recommend they start with brainstorming ideas, then move on to outlining, and ultimately write the actual content.

4. Encourage active learning: Encourage hands-on activities and interactive teaching strategies to keep kids interested in learning. Their focus may be maintained and learning will be more fun as a result. For instance, if they were studying plants, you could take them on a nature walk so they could see and recognise various plant species.

They can improve their attention span and calm their brains using breathing exercises and guided visualization. For instance, lead them through a brief breathing exercise where they concentrate on their breath coming in and out.

6. Provide regular short breaks: Regular breaks are important for recharging attention and preventing mental exhaustion. Encourage quick, frequent pauses during activities that call for extended concentration. For example, after 30 minutes of study, advise them to take a 5-minute break to stretch, get a snack, or perform a brief exercise.

Toe walking in kids: Causes, Tips and Foods to manage it

Toe walking

Does your child attempt to stand on his own with half of his sole? Is your child not using his heels to balance while walking? Does your child climbs up on you and tries walking with his toe? If you are wondering why your child is walking in this manner, it could be the signs of “toe walking”. It is normal if your kid is below 2 years of age, but if not, continue to read this article to find more details on toe walking in kids and ways to manage it.

WHATSAPP for concerns like Speech Delay, Low Weight, Frequent Illness, Hyperactivity, Low Concentration, Weak Eyesight, Improper Sleep, Pigmentation, Pores, Face Marks, Fine Lines , Lactation etc.

What is Toe walking?

Walking age varies between children. Some take their first step around 9 to 12 months while others may take a little longer time i.e around 15 to 17 months. Usually, when children learn to walk, most of them follow toe walking. Toe walking is a walking manner in which the kids uses toes of the feet for walking instead of heels contacting the ground.  At 14 months, the babies quit toe walking, walk a few steps independently and become steadier in his/ her walk. If they keep on walking with their toes even after 14 months, it might be due to some other reasons.

causes of toe walking

Usually in most cases, the reason for toe walking cannot be determined. But in some kids, toe walking may be driven by a some health issues, which might be any of the following:

1.Deformity of Achilles tendon

Achilles tendons are the connective tissue that connects the end of the lower part of the leg to the heel bone. Children with shorter Achilles tendons will find it challenging to fully stretch them. This might stop them from standing up straight and push them to follow toe walking.

2.Cerebral palsy

A set of conditions collectively known as cerebral palsy (CP) impact the balance and function of the muscles. The term “Cerebral” is related to the brain and “palsy” is a medical term which denotes difficulty in movement. Motor skill abnormalities in children are usually triggered by cerebral palsy. In some premature babies, the brain is underdeveloped which in turn causes some developmental abnormalities. When the muscles around the area of the feet get rigid, it can make walking challenging. As a result, it may force them to walk on their toes.

3.Periventricular leukomalacia (PVL)

Periventricular leukomalacia is a kind of brain damage that can harm the neural connections in the brain that regulate motor functions and make muscles weaker than usual, stiff, or resistive to move. It is prevalent in babies who are premature with low birth weight. They have trouble walking and as a result, they toe walk.

4.Muscle dystrophy

A category of genetic disorders known as muscular dystrophy lead to gradual muscle damage and weakening. This disease prevents the body from making the necessary proteins for building healthy muscle. The symptoms of muscular dystrophy start in childhood, predominantly in boys. Toe walking, difficulty running or jumping and not being able to balance are some of the symptoms of muscular dystrophy.

5.Spinal cord abnormalities

When a spinal cord is damaged, scar tissue gets attached with the spinal cord. The spinal cord is unable to freely move and causes nerve damage. This may result in toe walking and difficulty in standing.

6.Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Children with autism have developmental delays. When prolonged toe walking coexists with speech delay, it may be the sign of autism.

When your kid constantly follows toe walking for a long period, it will cause serious issues. Here are some of the risks:

  • Achilles tendons will become more stiff
  • Damage the muscles in the joints
  • Difficulty balancing
  • Frequently fall
  • Reduced ankle and feet movement
  • Trouble wearing shoes or foot wears

treatments for toe walking

If your child’s toe walking continues after 2 years, you might need to consult a doctor for a diagnosis  to find out the reason why your child is toe walking. The damage of muscles and joints can be avoided with the appropriate therapy and treatment. The doctor may advise your child to receive one of the following treatments, depending on the cause of toe walking.

1.Physiotherapy

Physical therapists employ a range of techniques to assist kids to gain strength, enhance their mobility, and improve the skills required to carry out daily tasks. Stretching increases the movement of rigid muscles.

2.Braces

Doctors could advise a foot-ankle brace that relaxes the foot and assists the kid in placing his feet flatly on the ground. It promotes the kid to walk flat-footed. Additionally, kids can keep it on at night to ease up their muscle stiffness.

3.Casts for walking

Doctors could suggest an orthopaedic cast made of plaster or fiberglass that stabilises the injured bones. This cast helps to stretch the tendons. When the tendon is long enough, it will improve the ankle movement of your kid and the cast will be removed.

3.Sense of touch

Allow your child to walk on various surfaces like mud, grassland, beach sand, smooth pebbles etc without wearing shoes. He/she will get a sense of what it’s like to walk with both feet touching the ground.

4.Be patient

A healthy walking pattern gradually emerges in children. Cheer them up!! when they learn to properly walk. Don’t force them, give them some time and space to rest.

A proper balance of sex hormones in the body results in improved fertility and reproductive health.

Fertility in men:

In men, low Vitamin D could result in problems including decreased sperm count, poor sperm motility, and other similar problems.

Male fertility and high vitamin D intake have been linked to enhanced sperm quality and motility. According to research, men with higher vitamin D levels had sperm with higher calcium levels. Sperm motility then increases as a result of the elevated calcium levels.

FERTILITY IN WOMEN:

In women, low Vitamin D increases the likelihood that females will experience conditions like PCOS, PMS, and infertility.

A normal vitamin D level may increase the likelihood of conceiving a healthy child in addition to having a good impact on fertility. Preterm birth, gestational diabetes, preeclampsia (extremely high blood pressure during pregnancy), and bacterial vaginosis all may be results of vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy proved by studies.

Studies have shown that having enough vitamin D in the body increases the success rate of Vitamin D of various reproductive therapies. According to a study, taking 25-OH vitamin D at a dosage of more than 30 ng/ml may increase your chances of becoming pregnant. However, the available scientific evidence is insufficient to support this claim.

Sources of Vitamin D:

Because vitamin D requirements differ from person to person, it would be better to know your vitamin levels through lab tests.  Following are some methods through which you can boost your vitamin D levels:

1. Sunlight:

One of the best and most efficient ways to receive your recommended daily amount of vitamin D is from sunlight. You can spend about 15 to 20 minutes under sunlight every day to get your daily dose of Vitamin D.

2. Vitamin D rich foods:

Nothing can beat the benefits achieved from direct food sources. This sunshine vitamin is more abundant in animal-based food sources than plant-based ones. Following are some of the vitamin D-rich food sources which you can include in your diet to boost vitamin levels.

  • Vegetarian sources: Shiitake and Button mushrooms
  • Non-vegetarian sources: Eggs, Cod liver oil, Mackerel, Salmon, Sardines, Grass-fed beef, etc

Also, Check: Foods to improve female egg quality

3. Vitamin D supplements:

Vitamin D supplements must be taken if advised by your doctor. Supplements may be recommended to you to boost your fertility, and at certain times doctors recommend supplements that contain vitamin D with vitamin K2. This is because, for calcium and vitamin D to be properly absorbed by the bones and to prevent it from entering the arteries, vitamin D3 and vitamin K2 are important.

VITAMIN D FOOD SOURCES

1. COW’S MILK AND ITS PRODUCTS:

It is the most commonly consumed type of milk and naturally a good source of many nutrients like calcium, protein, phosphorus and Vitamin B2. In several countries, fortification of milk with vitamin D takes place because milk doesn’t naturally contain vitamin D, but is rich source of calcium. These two work together to keep the bones strong. There are some dairy products made of cow’s milk like cheese, yogurt which are a good source of vitamin D.

2. CEREALS:

In comparison to other natural resources, fortified corn flakes and oat meals or granola mixes may provide less vitamin D, but still they can be a good way to boost the vitamin D levels. You can eat these cereals together with milk or yogurt to achieve both calcium and vitamin D for the body. The most important check to make here is the sugar levels in the cereal. Added sugar intake can adversely impact calcium and vitamin D levels. (how does sugar impact bones?)

3. EGG YOLK:

Eggs are one of the highest natural sources of vitamin D. Just one whole large egg provides 50% of vitamin D required for the day. It helps to maintain strong bones and teeth. Those who can may opt for fish (salmon, sardines) also as a source of vitamin D.

Win-win!

6. RAGI:

Ragi is also one of the foods high in calcium and vitamin D. No other plant source provides calcium the way ragi can making it one of a popular non-dairy sources of calcium. Ragi also has vitamin D and along with calcium, it can help in improving bone strength. It is a whole grain that is gluten free also and used in baking cakes and cookies.(Easy nutritious ragi recipe)

7. MUSHROOM:

Mushrooms are a rich ‘plant’ source of vitamin D. Researchers has found that we can increase levels of vitamin D even more by exposing mushrooms to the sun for 10-15 minutes. You can consume mushrooms either directly or also in the form of dried mushroom powder, use throughout the year, even when the season of mushroom has passed. For kids who are picky and don’t particularly enjoy eating mushroom, using the powder is an easy option. You can hide it in any batter or dough to make pancakes, wraps, bread, paratha, pizza. VOCAL STIMMING IN AUTISM

autism stimming

Does your child intonate more frequently? Intonation refers to the pattern of utterance. It refers to the rise and fall in voice during verbal expressions. How does it connect to autism? What are stimming types in autism? Children with autism frequently have peculiar intonation patterns, either using little intonation, which produces a flat or robotic sound, or extreme intonation can also sound weird. Absurd repetitive sounds made by the child refers to Vocal stimming. Children practice vocal stimming upon getting triggered.

Let’s understand more deeply.

WHATSAPP for concerns like Speech Delay, Low Weight, Frequent Illness, Hyperactivity, Low Concentration, Weak Eyesight, Improper Sleep, Pigmentation, Pores, Face Marks, Fine Lines , Lactation etc.

What is vocal stimming IN AUTISM?

Vocal stimming, often referred to as auditory stimming, is a form of self-stimulatory behaviour that uses the vocal cords, lips, and mouth. It’s one of the specific diagnostic marker in case of the autistic kids. Some examples of vocal stimming include in autism:

  • Random humming or singing
  • Screaming and shouting
  • Squealing or shrieking
  • Mimicking certain sounds on repeated basis
  • Groaning or grunting
  • Throat clearing
  • Absurd high and low pitched sounds
  • Whistling
  • Repetition of random sounds (phrases)

Also check, Early signs of Autism in kids.

How does vocal stimming help the child?

A Child practices self-stimulatory conduct for a variety of reasons. Self-stimulatory behaviour in those with autism may:

  • Helps in getting over stress
  • Provides internal pleasure
  • Helps in enhancement of the focus
  • Aids in conveying the emotions
  • Expression of excitement, anger or fear

Also check, Stimming in Autistic kids.

DAMAGING EFFECTS

  • If an individual with autism stims vocally while performing any task, it can result is focus diversion due to distraction voices
  • A person with autism may be unable to interact with others if they have persistent vocal stimming. People who vocal stim frequently might not be able to engage in daily tasks. They might also be prevented from places like the workplace, public areas, and classrooms.
  • Additionally, vocal stimming can cause an autistic person to stim in a harmful way to themselves.
  • Vocal stimming can have negative physical, mental, or social effects on some people, especially those with autism, even if it is less risky than physical types of stimming where people can hurt themselves.
  • The abnormal intonations can often affect speech

How to manage it?

Teach them when and where the behaviour is appropriate instead of trying to stop it.

1. Identify the triggers:

The potential sources of trigger must be identified. An autistic individual  always responds over some triggers that provoke him/her. For example: Loud noises in the background can trigger an autistic child to make loud absurd noises like “Brr-Brr” in order to get over with the unpleasant environment.

2. Make rules:

One must hold a realization that stimming offers ultimate comfort to the autistic kids and is the easiest way for them to cope up with their emotions. But this type of behaviour in the long run, on a continuous basis can pave a way for social disapproval. Thus, allot time for stimming or restricting the stimming only for some particular activities so the child won’t practice it again and again more number of times. For example : Asking the child to practice stimming only when at the house and to try to restrict and slowly reduce it at public places.

3. Set up regular routines:

Try to follow a consistent schedule for your everyday duties. Mealtimes, daily duties, leisure time, and times for work, study, or the child’s job can all be a part of the routine. Routines can assist individuals in avoiding being over- or under-stimulated and will lessen their need to stim. Regular routine helps in being consistent with the routine and not lets an individual stim for mere distraction.

4. Discover alternatives to vocal autism stimming:

Provide a fidget toy or any other alternative activity to the person who stims. Offer substitute activities that will achieve the expected goal. The individual who stims, for instance, can play sports for an hour and then create art for another. Encouraging someone to take a singing class may enable them to sing in a different way if they hum or sing as vocal stimming.

5. Consult experts for guidance and support:

Think about ABA therapy or occupational therapy as examples of different forms of therapy. Another alternative for stimming support is personal behavioural support. It might enable someone to identify and avoid their stimming triggers. For an Individual who is a stim user, Individual therapy is better suited. In the similar way family therapy can be helpful for families that include a stim user.

Games boosting focus and concentration

These 8 interesting and fun games for the brain can indeed help in sharpening the focus and improving the concentration in kiddos!

1. Jigsaw Puzzle

Playing jigsaw puzzles is a great way to exercise your short-term memory. Sorting out the different colors that make up a picture requires focus and thus pushes the kid harder to arrange the pieces attentively. Their  brain has to put more effort when there are more components to arrange. Daily jigsaw puzzle solving can greatly enhance a child’s ability to focus.

2. Brain Teasers

3. Tray Game

This is one of the funniest, memory testers for the kids to play. It helps in building up focus and concentration. Put several random items on a tray and hold it in front of the kid.  Let the child look at the tray for a moment and later you cover up the tray.  Ask the child to recall everything on the tray without looking after he or she has done that. Let them recall and write it down on a sheet of paper. Open the tray to check if anything is missing in the list. This game for the brain helps in enhancing the memory.

4. Throwing the ball into the cup

This game tests child precision. In this one, place a sturdy cup in front of the child and ask him/her to throw the ball in a way that it should exactly land inside the cup.

Initially place the cup near the child so at the beginning it is easier for the child to throw the ball into the cup. Slowly slide the cup away and ask the child to throw the ball. As the cup moves gradually away from the child, they have to concentrate more on the cup and have to throw the ball with more force for it to land into the cup! Thus it’s a concentration improving activity.

5. Mind-Body integration

This activity helps in imbibing self-awareness and control. For example: Ask your child to sit calmly on the chair without moving at all.
