7 essential Nutrients for eye care of kids

Year 2020 (corona pandemic) has shown us many ups and downs. More or less we adjusted ourselves according to the situation and learned to survive. The worst hit emotionally and physically from this situation are the kids. From not being able to attend school to sitting at home without friends, screen came to their complete rescue. With a sharp drop in physical movement (outdoor activities), and increased screen time due to online classes and pleasure viewing, it has led to many health related concerns. One organ being way more stressed than others is the Eye. Rather than giving supplements to kids, it is better to look for eye health food and include it in their diet from very beginning to prevent eye diseases in the future. Some nutrients are beneficial for eye care or eye health of kids. Including them in kids diet can take away your this worry forever.

Eyes continue to grow and develop as a child ages and the eye muscles become stronger. For most of the children, as they grow, they have good eyesight and do not need to wear glasses. However, if a child develops any eye diseases or eye disorders and it is not diagnosed at an early age, it may lead to reduced vision in one or both eyes.

Which food will improve eyesight?

Vitamin A:

Vitamin A plays a crucial role in vision by maintaining a clear cornea, which is the outer covering of your eye. Rhodopsin, a protein present in eyes that helps to see in low light is component of vitamin A. Orange- colored fruits and vegetables like carrots, mangoes, apricot, and sweet potatoes are high in bête-carotene, a form of vitamin A that helps your eyes to adjust them in darkness and improves night vision. It is key for eye care and necessary to protect your kid from any children’s eye disease.

Vitamin C:

It is a powerful antioxidant that protects eyes against damaging free radicals and plays an important role for eye care. It produces collagen which is important for eyes. Connective tissues in eyes are maintained by collagen. It holds them together and protects them, which helps in preventing any kind of eye disorders in children. Citrus fruits like oranges, guava, lemon and vegetables like tomatoes are the major contributors of vitamin C. Broccoli, sprouts, and capsicum are some other rich natural sources of vitamin C.

Vitamin E:

Vitamin E is an antioxidant which protects certain parts of the eye. It has been known to lower the risk of developing macular degeneration and cataract, two age-related conditions. Including almonds, pistachio and walnuts in the child’s diet can preserve his/her eyesight. Studies also show that eating nuts daily is an effective home remedy to control myopia (a condition in which far objects don’t appear clear). It is one of the essential nutrients for eye care.

Zinc:

Eye contains high level of zinc. It is also involved in the formation of visual pigments in the retina. Zinc deficiency can result in night blindness. Chickpeas, beans, nuts are some food sources of zinc. Including them in diet is good for eye care.

Omega 3:

There are many clinical studies, that omega 3 fatty acids are essential for infant vision development. DHA and other omega 3 fatty acids are found in mother’s milk and also present in some formula milks to support eye development in infants. These essential fatty acids also help to protect an adult’s eye from macular degeneration and dry eye syndrome. Fish, nuts, seeds like chia seeds and flax seeds are rich sources of omega 3 fatty acids and play important role for eye care.

Antioxidants Lutein and Zeaxanthin:

It helps to protect eyes from harmful bright light waves like ultraviolet rays in sunlight by absorbing excess light. Studies suggest that high levels of both in eye tissue can give better vision in dim light. These work to protect eyes from free radicals. Natural food sources of these two are green or yellow vegetables like spinach, carrot. Non vegetarian sources include egg yolks. For eye care, including these foods in diet is the best and easiest way.

Herbs:

Herbs like triphala and ginkgo biloba promote better eyesight. Triphala is an ayurvedic formulation made from amla, haritaki and bibhitaki. It is very efficient in treating many eye disorders and improving eyesight. Ginkgo biloba is a strong antioxidant with many benefits, it improves the blood circulation around the eyes and is used in improving conditions for live glaucoma and macular degeneration.

Scientific research on INGREDIENTS FOR Eye Health:

Betacarotene- Lutein and Zeaxanthin: There is convincing scientific evidence that a lack of Lutein and Zeaxanthin from birth impact eye health and weaker vision. Read here.

Triphala: There is wide research on the role of Triphala in improving computer/screen vision syndrome or weaker vision due to family history or otherwise. Read here.

Foods to avoid

Refined sugar: Excessive sugar can bring about problem of blurry vision. Moreover, sugar damages the protein in our body, resulting in ageing of organs, which further compromises immunity, growth and functioning. Greatest source of sugar in the average kid’s diet are sugary snacks and beverages like cookies, cakes, candies, fruit juice, soda, and sports drinks. Everything that the child picks up to eat today has strains of added sugar in some form or the other.

Preservatives: Most of the packaged food companies are adding artificial preservatives to delay spoilage and contamination in foods.  Artificial preservatives such as nitrates, benzoates, sulfites, sorbates, parabens, formaldehyde, BHT, BHA and several others can cause serious health hazards such as hypersensitivity, allergy, asthma, hyperactivity, neurological damage.

Refined oil: The high temperature involved in the refining process removes all the natural and beneficial substances from the oil, which is not good for the digestive as well as respiratory health and ultimately affects your immunity.

Health Benefit of Massage for Babies

Massaging the baby every day is a kind of old aged ritual in India. We have always heard from our elders that massaging newborns with oil is important for their overall growth and development. This is a practice which has been followed from ages. Massaging is a great way to relax babies. It is not just a simple way to nurture a baby but also the best time for a mother to develop a connection with the baby. In this whole process massage oil plays an important role. The oil you have chosen has to be gentle and with some super healthy properties. Then only your baby will get the benefit of massage, such as nourished healthy skin and strong bones and muscles.

Benefit of massage for newborns

Connection

After breastfeeding, massage plays a great role to promote a lovely bond between mother and child. A delicate and calming massage helps a mother to convey her emotions to baby. (How to boost up breast milk production?)

Skin

A gentle baby massage helps to retain the moisture of the skin. It provides the required nourishment to baby’s skin and promotes healthy, soft and supple skin in babies. (How to prevent dry skin issue in kids?)

Sleep

Massaging helps to promote better sleep patterns in babies. A proper soft massage improves blood circulation and relaxes the baby. If the baby is getting irritable, he/she can get a better sound sleep after massage. (Why rest and sleep is important for babies?)

Growth and development

Massage helps the baby skin to get stimulated and nourished. It promotes all round growth and development of the baby by improving blood circulation, nervous system and body functions. (Growth and development of infants)

Strengthen bones and muscles

Babies used to stretch their body. After coming out of the womb they get space. Their bodies grow a little bit every day. A good Ayurveda massage oil ensures to develop strong bones in babies that strengthens muscles too. (Which foods can help to build strong bones and muscles in kids?)

Digestion

Massaging the infant helps in easing the digestion. It prevents gas and stomach torment issues in babies. It actually helps in relieving colic in babies too. (Some foods and recipes to introduce solids to babies)

How to do a baby massage?

Set the mood

Start connecting with the baby by singing a lullaby. Dim the lights and make the room warm. You can turn on some soft calming music too while massaging. Keep talking to the baby. It will make a lovely bond and understanding between you and baby.

Surface

The surface on which you are placing the baby for massage has to be comfortable. It should be flat. This can be your bed or floor. (Never leave the baby alone or unattended). Put a towel or two and place the baby carefully over it.

Undressing baby

Undress the baby and remove the diaper. Left the baby naked for some time. Let the body get direct air. Babies often get diaper rash or heat rash. This airtime is beneficial for their skin and especially for bums.

Gentle touch

Newborn’s skin is very soft. You cannot rub it. Give a soft handed gentle massage. It should be as smoothing as your baby’s skin. The process should be calming and relaxing for your baby. You can use firm strokes for toddlers but for infants strokes should be soft and gentle.

Hygiene

Use a clean towel or clothes for the baby every time you give a massage. Wash your hand properly before picking up the baby for massage. If you have a midwife (Dai), do insist that she clean up herself thoroughly before handling the baby as she visits several houses and can easily carry germs that may cause infection.

What to avoid?

  • Avoid Massaging face of the baby. He/she is too small and the possibility of dripping oil into eyes or mouth is non-avoidable.
  • Baby’s soft spot on the head still needs time to close. So avoid massaging on the head.
  • Never use oils for baby massage with artificial fragrance and paraben. Avoid harsh Ingredients.
  • 5-10 minutes massage would be enough for infants. Give a soft and gentle massage to your little one.
  • If the baby is crying, falling asleep stops the massage.
  • Hold the baby carefully after massage. Massage oil makes the grip slippery.

Best oil for baby massage

Coconut oil

As coconut oil contains lauric acid and other essential fatty acids too, it possesses antimicrobial, antifungal and antiviral properties. It helps to nourish the baby’s skin and at the same time protect it from any kind of skin infections too. It improves the moisture and prevents skin dryness. Baby’s skin is quite sensitive. Rashes caused by diapers and heat can also be treated with the help of coconut oil. Since coconut oil has soothing and hydrating properties, it reduces the inflammation thus giving relief from itching and irritation. It is one of the best oils which can provide maximum benefit of massage to babies. (Benefits of coconut oil)

Mustard oil

Mustard oil has been used by mothers to massage babies from ages. It has antifungal and antibacterial properties that makes it the best choice for baby massage. Baby’s skin is very sensitive and is more prone to skin infections. Mustard oil protects it from any kind of fungal infections. It has a strong and pungent smell which helps to keep insects and mosquitoes away from babies. Mustard oil is very popular in cold regions because it is very effective to keep the body warm by retaining heat. Benefit of massage from mustard oil are very high during winters.

Olive oil

Olive oil contains Vitamin E and Vitamin K. It is also loaded with antioxidants which can help to prevent skin inflammation. It can be used to massage the baby in any season. Olive oil acts as a great moisturizer and also improves skin tone. As it is loaded with healthy fats, oleic acids and squalene, it has a regenerative effect on skin tissues. Olive oil effectively treats diaper rash. Take two tbsp. of olive oil and 1 tbsp. of water, mix well and give a gentle massage to the baby’s bum.

Almond oil

It is important to choose the best oil for your baby’s skin. Benefit of massage doubles if you choose best oil. Almond oil is among one of the top choices by parents for using it to massage their babies. It is enriched with vitamin A, vitamin E, fatty acids and with some minerals too. All these qualities make it a desirable choice for taking it for a baby massage. There are two types of almond oil- sweet and bitter. Sweet almond oil is absolutely safe to use as it is edible. No harm if the baby puts his/her hands in mouth. (How almond can help in growth and development of kids?)

Oral Health of Kids: Tooth Decay Remedies at Home

Teeth are one of the most vital parts of our body. They help us to bite and chew food. Healthy and beautiful teeth give us a bright and beautiful smile. It is important to take care of them from childhood. It is the time when kids are filled with adventure, exploration and growth. Little bit of ignorance and carelessness can create a life long suffering. Playing or climbing here and there can end up with a broken tooth. Slow formation of plaque can result in a cavity. One of the most concerning issues in toddlers and kids are dental cavities. Tooth decay is most common among children. Some tooth decay remedies at home can provide quick relief but, your little bit of attention to the developing symptoms can save your child from unwanted pain and trouble.

Common Dental Issues in Kids
Tooth decay

Children are not proficient at brushing and flossing teeth without supervision. You should help them in holding and brushing teeth until they firmly learn to grasp the tooth brush. To make it a regular practice you have to tell them in the initial stage to brush teeth twice a day. Generally kids love a sugar loaded diet. It forms a layer of plaque over teeth that eats away the enamel which is the main cause of tooth decay. Making your kids brush their teeth properly can help in removing plaque, bacteria and food particles from their teeth and thus prevent early tooth decay. (Why brushing teeth should be part of night time routine?)

Tooth sensitivity

Tooth sensitivity is another major dental issue that kids may face. Many factors can be responsible for sensitivity. It can be uncomfortable and distracting for your child. It is important to take your child for dental check-up at least twice in a year to diagnose the underlying causes. Some factors that can cause tooth sensitivity are:

  • Cavities
  • Newly erupting permanent teeth
  • Teeth grinding
  • Plaque formation
  • Cracked filling
Dental emergencies

Dental emergencies are something that can happen anytime. While participating in sports activities, during rough fights with siblings, falling while learning riding cycle or bike or any other unexpected accidents can be a reason for dental emergencies. All these can result in cracking, breaking or teeth chipping. In worst scenarios teeth can be knocked out permanently. Mouth guard is a good option to prevent sports related tooth injuries. Parents have to keep an eye on their children while they are playing to avoid such injuries.

Gingivitis and Gum Diseases

Generally people think that gum diseases only occur in adults. But, it is quite common in kids also. Gingivitis is a precursor of gum disease. Red swollen gums, little bit bleeding while brushing or flossing are some of the symptoms of gum diseases. It is mostly common in children with poor oral hygiene. It can be avoided by taking proper care and brushing and flossing daily.

Bad breath

The bacteria in our mouth feeds on leftover food, fluid and plaque and produces hydrogen sulfide, which leads to a bad smell in the mouth. In children, it is most common in the morning when they wake up. Brushing your teeth before going to bed at night can prevent this problem to a large extent. Other than that, cleaning your tongue and using an antibacterial mouthwash can also help.

Excessive thumb sucking

We have often seen infants, toddlers and kids sucking their thumbs or pacifiers. They use it as a means to soothe irritations and anxiety. It’s not a problem until it becomes a habit. Prolonged thumb sucking can affect the development of teeth in kids or can create problems with teeth alignment. It can cause open bite. The upper and lower front teeth don’t meet due to the thumb thus do not fit together properly. Another problem that can be caused due to thumb sucking is that upper incisor teeth may be tipped forward. This may make it difficult for your child to bite or chew or even can affect the kid’s speech. Parents should break this habit after the baby crosses the infant stage.

How to clean baby’s gums:

Babies don’t have teeth as they are born. So there is no need to use a toothbrush or toothpaste for cleaning mouth. But, you can brush their gums to establish the habit of oral hygiene. Take a clean damp cloth, fix it in your index finger and run it slowly and smoothly over the baby’s gums and tongue. Just doing this twice a day would be enough. There is no need to use any product in their mouth. As the baby starts teething, initially you can use only water to clean their mouth. As they get several teeth, this is the time when you can put a tiny amount of fluoride free toothpaste on a toothbrush with soft bristles and teach them how to hold and brush their teeth.

Foods to strengthen kid’s teeth
Vitamin C

There are many things your kids eat during the day. They can develop different kinds of bacteria in the kid’s mouth which can cause gingivitis first stage gum disease. Vitamin C rich foods such as oranges, kiwis, papayas, limes, tomatoes and sweet potatoes can help to kill these bacteria. It also promotes a healthy supply of collagen in gums. (Role of vitamin C in building immunity)

Calcium

Calcium is one of the most important nutrients for healthy teeth. It strengthens the hard outer shell of the tooth called enamel, which is the defense against erosion and cavities. Calcium rich food like milk, cheese, broccoli and other milk products are the best food sources for kid’s healthy teeth development. (What are calcium rich foods?)

Chewable vegetables

Cucumbers, green beans, peas, raw carrots are some foods which can mechanically cleans teeth by just chewing them. Chewing these foods can vanish the layer of plaque naturally. Encourage your kids to chew these foods slowly to get their teeth clean. (Recipe of carrot beetroot pasta sauce)

Egg yolk

Eggs are one of the highest natural sources of vitamin D. Just one whole large egg provides 50% of vitamin D required for the day. It helps to maintain strong bones and teeth. Those who can may opt for fish (salmon, sardines) also as a source of vitamin D. (Vitamin D rich foods for building strong bones)

Moringa

Moringa is a superfood. It has 3 times more calcium than milk which makes it an excellent food to treat weak or damaged bones and also one of the best non-dairy sources of calcium. Some studies also indicate that moringa can heal damaged bones thus making it a must have calcium rich foods for bones and teeth. Dried moringa leaf powder has 17 times more vitamin D than fortified milk. In addition to this, it’s a fix for digestion troubles, immunity and iron. (Science based health benefits of moringa)

Tooth Decay Remedies At Home
Warm Salt Water

It is considered as one of the effective first line tooth decay remedies at home for toothache. As a natural disinfectant salt water helps to release food particles by loosening, that may be stuck in between teeth. It also heals internal wounds and reduces inflammation. You can take warm water and mix ½ teaspoon of salt in it. Use it as a mouthwash thrice a day.

Clove

It has been used from ages to treat toothaches. Clove contains a natural antiseptic Eugenol. Clove oil numbs the pain effectively and reduces inflammation. Dab a small amount of cotton in clove oil and fix it in a cavity hole or apply on the affected area. You can also make a mouthwash by adding a drop of this oil into a glass of water. It is one of the best tooth decay remedies at home for toothache.

Guava Leaves

Guava leaves have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties that heals wounds and can help in oral care. You can chew fresh guava leaves or boil them to make a mouthwash.

Garlic

Garlic has been known for its medicinal properties from past thousands of years. It can be used as pain reliever in toothache. It can kill plaque forming bacteria and protect teeth from cavities. You can make paste and apply it on the affected area to get relief. It is also considered as one of the effective tooth decay remedies at home which can provide relief from toothache instantly.

Asafetida

Asafetida and lemon juice is one of the common home remedies for toothache. Mix asafetida with warm lemon juice and apply on the affected tooth. Use this after every 30 minutes until the pain subsides.

Peppermint

It is a widely used herb for dental health as it acts as a breath freshener and teeth whitener. Recent scientific studies have found that peppermint fights bacteria inside your mouth which causes gum disease. Peppermint oil is an effective way to reduce plaque (a combination of bacteria, food particles, saliva and acid that sticks to the teeth). Rinsing with diluted peppermint oil can prevent bad breath and toothache also. (What are some ayurvedic herbs to build immunity?)

Neem

Traditionally neem sticks were used as toothbrushes. It has a high place in the traditional medicine world. Due to its antibacterial properties, neem is considered to treat bacteria and heal. It is quite useful in dentistry for curing gingival (tissues which provide a seal around teeth) problems and maintaining oral health in a natural way. Neem is an additive in some branded toothpastes nowadays. Neem oil has antibacterial and antifungal properties that can prevent gum inflammation and toothache. It is one of the known tooth decay remedies since ages.
