Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD):

ASD, also known as an autism spectrum disorder, is a broad term covering several neurological behavioural disorders, including ADHD, Asperger’s syndrome, bipolar disorder, intellectual disability, schizophrenia and others. These disorders can affect a child’s capability for social interaction and communication.

The intensity of the symptoms will vary depending on the child. While some children may lack emotional intelligence yet possess a high level of logical intelligence, other children may find it difficult to perform fundamental functions like getting dressed or eating by themselves. Children with ASD frequently have higher emotional needs, even though they are just as open to compassion and love as other kids.

Although raising a child with ASD can be exhausting, it is your duty to go above and above to support your child in gaining self-confidence and achieving social acceptance.

Now tell them to hop in the boxes, pick up the stone/pebble, and then come back hopping without stepping on the sides of the boxes. This game helps the kids to improve their motor skills and keep them healthy. Since these games are usually played with other kids, this helps them to improve their social and communication skills.

3. Obstacle Courses

Tell the kids to hug a tree, run around bushes, jump over a rope etc. This helps them to keep their mind and body fully energetic and contributes in developing their motor and sensory skills.

Down syndrome and Brain Seizures

symptoms for seizures

You’re in the middle of a function when the child starts acting strangely, staring blankly and moving his hands, leg, and mouth in an odd manner. Well!! These are the symptoms for seizures. 1 to 13% of children with Down syndrome are affected with brain seizures. Out of which 40% of children show symptoms for seizures before the age of 1 year. If it is not treated early on, the symptoms for seizures may worsen. Here’s everything you need to know about seizures in children and how to manage them properly! (Child with developmental delay: Signs and Remedies)

Types of seizures

First understand what are the types of seizures. Doctors divide seizures into two types based on how and where abnormal brain activity begins. First one is focal seizures and second is generalized seizures. (Difficulties in Learning, Reading and Writing: 7 Foods that help)

1.Focal seizures

Focal seizures result from abnormal electrical activity in one area of your brain. It can occur with or without loss of consciousness:

  • Without loss of consciousness These seizures can alter emotions or the way things look, smell, feel, taste, or sound, but the person does not lose consciousness. They may become angry, joyful, or sad all of a sudden. Some people experience nausea or other unusual feelings that are difficult to describe.
  • With impaired awareness These seizures are characterized by a change or loss of consciousness or awareness that feels similar to being in a dream. The individual may appear to be awake, but they stare into space and do not respond normally to their surroundings, or they perform repetitive movements.

Symptoms of focal seizures can be mistaken for those of other neurological disorders such as migraine, narcolepsy, or mental illness.

2.Generalised seizures

Generalized seizures are seizures that appear to involve all areas of the brain. The following are examples of generalized seizures:

  • Absence seizures – Absence seizures, formerly known as petit mal seizures, are common in children and are distinguished by staring into space or subtle body movements such as eye blinking or lip smacking.
  • Clonic seizures – Clonic seizures are characterized by jerking muscle movements that are repeated or rhythmic. Symptoms for seizures on both sides of the body usually affect the neck, face, and arms.
  • Tonic seizures – Muscle stiffness is caused by tonic seizures. These seizures typically affect the muscles in your back, arms, and legs, causing you to lose consciousness and fall to the ground.
  • Atonic seizures – Atonic seizures, also known as drop seizures, result in a loss of muscle control, causing you to collapse, fall, or drop your head.
  • Myoclonic seizures – Myoclonic seizures are characterized by brief jerks or twitches of your arms and legs. Often, there is no loss of consciousness.
  • Tonic-clonic seizures – Tonic-clonic seizures, formerly known as grand mal seizures, are the most dramatic type of epileptic seizure and can result in an abrupt loss of consciousness, body stiffening and shaking, and, in rare cases, loss of bladder control or tongue biting.

The Connection between Seizures and Down Syndrome

Seizures affect people with Down syndrome for a variety of reasons. Some seizures, for example, are caused by cardiovascular disease. Seizures caused by abnormal electrical activity in the brain develop in person with Down syndrome as a result of decreased inhibition of electrical pathways, increased excitation of brain cells, structural abnormalities of the brain, and changes in the amount of certain neurotransmitters. There are almost certainly other reasons why seizures occur in Down syndrome. They have still not been explained.

Seizures in people with Down syndrome are similar to seizures in other people. Some seizures affect only one part of the body while others cause jerky movements throughout the body. Seizures in people with Down syndrome may also cause loss of consciousness, incontinence, and fatigue. Fortunately, right therapy can be successfully control symptoms for seizures.

What to do when somebody is having a seizure?

If somebody with you is showing symptoms of seizures, don’t panic; there are things you can do to help them.

  •     Help them in lying down on the floor.
  •     Turn the person on his or her side to avoid choking on drool or vomit.
  •     Do not attempt to halt the seizure’s movements.
  •     To avoid head injuries, place something soft under the person’s head.
  •    Create a safe and secure environment for the individual and yourself.
  •     Stay with the person who is having seizures.
  •     Remove any clothing that is too tight around the neck.
  •      Do not put anything in their mouth, including your fingers.

AUTISM AND EYE CONTACT

autism features

Autism or Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder that affects communication and behaviour and is estimated to affect about 1 in 54 children. Around 50% of the parents notice autism features by the time their child reaches 12 months and the remaining notice symptoms by 2 years.

“Lack of eye contact” is one of the common autism features. Children with autism are less likely to look in someone’s eyes, implying that they are less engaged with others or less responsive to people in general. And pushing for eye contact will result in even more lack of eye contact. Then let’s see how to encourage your autistic child to make eye contact, and how should the child’s avoidance be managed without causing anxiety or stress.

WHATSAPP for concerns like Speech Delay, Low Weight, Frequent Illness, Hyperactivity, Low Concentration, Weak Eyesight, Improper Sleep, Pigmentation, Pores, Face Marks, Fine Lines , Lactation etc.

Feedback from parents

What is the importance of eye contact?

Making eye contact is very vital for communication. It implies a communication partner’s interest, attentiveness, or consideration. During a conversation, making eye contact with another person may signal that you are interested in what they have to say and that you care about being in the conversation and with that person at that time. It demonstrates that you are also paying attention.

You may also pick up on social signs by making eye contact. You may utilize what you see in someone’s eyes to understand more about their experience, such as what they’re trying to say or how they feel.

When you don’t make eye contact with someone who is attempting to connect with you, they may think you aren’t interested in what they have to say or that you aren’t even listening.

Some reasons for lack of eye contact:

Why individuals with autism avoid or have reduced eye contact, is the question asked for a long time. Children with autism features appear to avoid eye contact for a variety of reasons, including:

  • They frequently lack the usual social motivation that encourages other children to make eye contact.
  • May not realize that looking into another person’s eyes is more revealing than looking into that person’s mouth or hands.
  • It’s difficult to concentrate on both spoken language and another person’s eyes at the same time.
  • Eye contact can be a very intense and alarming sensory experience for some children.

Ingredients that may help to improve eye contact:

According to experts, anything that is good for the brain is likely to be good for autism and autism features like eye contact. Below are a list of the essential nutrients and ingredients recommended as part of a healthy ASD diet.

ASHWAGANDHA:

Ashwagandha has a strong affinity for GABA receptors. As a result, Ashwagandha can be used to treat Autism symptoms such as eye contact, memory loss, anxiety, and attention deficit.

BRAHMI:

Brahmi is a brain superfood that is believed to sharpen the brain by protecting cells and increasing chemicals involved in learning and memory. It acts on the CNS, where it improves grasping power, eye contact, memory, intellect, and speech, as well as correcting emotional, mood, and personality aberrations in an individual.

SHANKHAPUSHPI:

In order to improve brain functioning, shankhapushpi is an old remedy. The powerful antioxidants and flavonoids present in it improve the memory capacity, focus, concentration, calmness, alertness of an individual. Since it is a brain tonic and stimulator, people taking shankhapushpi have improved autism features like eye contact, memory, reasoning, problem-solving, and other cognitive abilities.

PROTEIN:

Protein is an essential component of a healthy diet. It helps to build, maintain, and repair body tissues. It is also necessary for brain health and plays an important role in neurotransmitter production (brain chemical). G protein also regulates cellular signalling and is essential for retinoid receptor function, laying the groundwork for healthy visual processing.

OMEGA 3 FATTY ACIDS:

There is a link between omega 3 fatty acids and early childhood brain development, according to research. These healthy fats have incredible brain-boosting properties and play an important role in improving autism features like eye contact, memory, and attention span. Fish and walnuts are excellent sources of omega 3.

MAGNESIUM:

Magnesium is responsible for nerve transmission and nerve-muscle coordination in our bodies. In other words, it guards against a child’s excessive excitement (which can be traumatic). It also increases the effectiveness of vitamin B, which is important in the production of enzymes required by the brain. It  may improve eye contact and reduce behavioral issues.

Tips that help you to encourage your child to make eye contact:

If your child has been diagnosed with autism or autism features, therapy can begin to help him or her develop or improve their general communication skills. While developing eye contact will receive some attention, and for that, you can try these tips.

  1. Try to make appropriate eye contact with your child; always turn to your face when speaking to him/her.
  2. Blowing bubbles and then waiting is a common method for provoking eye contact.
  3. Touching your child’s chin gently can serve as a reminder to look, but DO NOT DRAG YOUR CHILD’S FACE ROUND TO MAKE THEM LOOK.
  4. You could say, “Look at me,” if your child is cooperative and understands what you mean.
  5. When your child is on the swing/rocking horse, etc., stand in front of him or her. Stop the swing every now and then and say “Ready, set” – wait a few moments in the hope that they will look at you and then say “Go.” You can encourage a “Go” vocalization as they turn to look at you more readily.
  6. Make eye contact with your child in a variety of ways. Do not nag him or her with “Look at me, look at me.”
  7. Bring an object/toy up to your eye level to encourage them to look. He or she may initially only look at the toy, but eye contact will gradually emerge.
  8. When some children engaged in gross motor activities like swinging or tickling they feel relaxed. During these activities, the child may make spontaneous eye contact.
  9. Appreciate all random eye contact by saying “Good looking.”

Stammering in Kids

speaking difficulty

Stammering, also known as stuttering or childhood-onset fluency disorder, is a speaking difficulty characterized by repeated and substantial difficulties with usual fluency and flow of speech. According to the Indian Stammering Association, stammering affects 1% of the population and affects 5-15% of kids. People who stammer know what they want to say but struggle to say it. The majority of youngsters grow out of stammering. However, it can be a persistent problem that lasts into adulthood. But worry not: here are some strategies and foods to help your child with speaking difficulty to communicate better. (Speech delay signs in kids)

WHATSAPP for concerns like Speech Delay, Low Weight, Frequent Illness, Hyperactivity, Low Concentration, Weak Eyesight, Improper Sleep, Pigmentation, Pores, Face Marks, Fine Lines , Lactation etc.

A MOM’S OPINION ABOUT HOW Brain BOOSTER HELPED TO reduce stammering

WHAT IS STAMMERING?

Stammering is a neurodevelopmental disorder in which children have speaking difficulty and struggle to talk clearly and fluently. They may, for example, repeat or lengthen a word, a phrase, or a consonant or vowel sound. They may also halt during talking when they reach a difficult word or accent. Most stuttering occurs at the start of a phrase when kids repeat the first letter a few times before it is proper.

There are two main types of stammering:

1. Developmental stammering:

This is the most common type of stammering. It occurs in early childhood while speech and language abilities are rapidly developing. Certain treatments, medicines, and psychological or emotional stress might also contribute to it.

2. Acquired or onset stammering:

It occurs in older children and adults as a result of a brain injury, stroke, or chronic neurological disorder. It is relatively rare.

Causes of stammering in kids:

Stammering is the result of an imbalance in the activity of the two cerebral hemispheres of the brain. The researchers discovered that stammering or speech impairment may be linked to signal disruption in the left section of the brain. This region is responsible for the programming of physical speech movements, and also their regulation.

A youngster may stammer for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Inherited from parents
  • Childhood developmental delays
  • High/increased activity level, when tired or exhausted due to high physical activities.
  • During child’s rapid pace of speaking, when they attempt to speak faster.

Signs and symptoms of stammering in kids:

You can use these indications to determine if the youngster is just lost for words or is stammering.

  • Start a word, phrase, or sentence with difficulty
  • Adding sounds to a word or extending a phrase
  • If trouble progressing to the following word is expected, additional words such as “hmm” might be included.

Suspected Causes for Autism: 10 foods that may help

Autism or Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder that affects communication and behavior. Although autism can be diagnosed at any age, it is said to be a “developmental disorder” because symptoms generally appear in the first two years of life. There are many causes for autism in kids and symptoms may vary from child to child. In some kids the symptoms are very mild while in certain cases severe symptoms are high.

Around 50% of the parents of children with autism notice signs by the time their child reaches 12 months and the remaining notice problems by 2 years. Children with ASD may have symptoms throughout their lives, but it’s possible for them to get better as they get older. Based on the most recent report, ASD is estimated to affect about 1 in 54 children, with boys being more likely to have ASD than girls.

Symptoms of autism spectrum disorder:

Kids with Autism have difficulty with social communication, interaction and behavior.  Here is the list of behaviors that are noticed in children diagnosed with Autism.  These Symptoms may vary from person to person.

1) Social communication and interaction

Children with autism find it difficult to interact with people. This is one of the most common symptoms of ASD. You might notice these signs by the age of 10 to 12 months. Other social skill symptoms may also include:

  • Give no response or little response when someone calls their name.
  • Less or no eye contact.
  • Don’t like cuddling or holding. They don’t stretch their arms to be picked up.
  • They prefer to be alone.
  • Difficulty in speaking or speech delay. (Tips to improve speech delay)
  • Their words generally don’t match with their facial expression and gestures.
  • Speak with unusual tones like robotic, flat or singsong voices.
  • Can’t start a conversation or be a part of one.
  • Often speak on their favorite subject without noticing that others are not interested or without giving others a chance to respond.
  • Doesn’t express their feelings and emotions.
2) Behavioral symptoms

Children with autism spectrum disorder may have repetitive patterns of behavior. Some of the common behavioral symptoms are as follows:

  • Repetitive behavior like repeating words or phrases, hand flapping or rocking.
  • Aggressive behavior. Perform activities that could cause self-harm.
  • Easily get upset with slight changes in a routine.
  • Lack of coordination and confidence.
  • Eat only specific foods or are generally fussy eaters.
  • Having overly focused interests, such as with moving objects or parts of objects
  • Over sensitivity to touch, light and sound.
  • Impulsiveness. Usually act without thinking.

Kids with ASD may also find it difficult to sleep. Despite so many challenges, they may have some strength, like they have an ability to learn things in detail and remember information for a long period of time. They are also strong visual and auditory learners.

Causes for autism:

However the exact causes for Autism is still unknown. There is no single cause, research shows that genes and environment can act together to affect the child’s development in the may that leads to ASD. Some most suspected causes or risk factors for  Autism include.

  • Having a sibling with ASD.  When one child is diagnosed with ASD, the next child to come along has about a 20% greater risk of developing autism than normal.
  • Research shows that older parents have a greater likelihood of having a child with autism.
  • Kids with certain genetic conditions such as Down syndrome, Fragile X syndrome and Rett syndrome are most likely to have ASD.
  • Exposure to heavy metals and environmental toxins.
  • Low birth weight.
  • Premature birth and maternal use of valproic acid or thalidomide during pregnancy can also be one of the causes for autism.
Diagnosis:

If you notice any of the above symptoms mentioned above , you must go for a proper diagnosis as recommended by the doctor. While there is no specific laboratory test to determine autism, a team of child psychologist, occupational therapists and speech pathologist do screening and evaluation which may include:

  • Medical exam like blood test, hearing test
  • Gathering information about the symptoms that exist, and from when these symptoms started.
  • Whether these symptoms are affecting their day to day life, or they find it difficult to socialize.
  • Family history of ASD.
  • May also involve interviews or questionnaires for family members, teachers and others close to the child to know the causes for autism
Treatment and therapies:

While there is no cure for ASD, currently available treatments can help reduce symptoms and improve functioning. Treatments include medication, psychotherapy, education or training, or a combination of treatments.

  • A doctor may use medication to treat some symptoms like irritability, aggression, repetitive behavior, hyperactivity, anxiety and attention problems.
  • Behavioral, psychological, educational, or skill-building therapy to build self confidence.
  • Speech-language pathologists are therapists who specialize in treating language problems and speech disorders. They are a key part of the autism treatment team.
  • Find an autism support group. Sharing information and experiences can help children with ASD and/or their caregivers learn about treatment options and ASD-related programs.
Healthy ASD diet for kids:

It is very important to feed kids a nutritious diet from the early years itself, even more important if the child is suffering from ASD. Along with the treatment and therapies a healthy ASD diet for kids including essential nutrients is must, which may help in reducing the symptoms. Experts say whatever is good for the brain is likely to be good for ASD and speech delay. Below is the list of essential nutrients and foods recommended as a part of a healthy ASD diet

Protein:

Protein is an important part of a healthy diet. It builds, maintains and repairs body tissues. It is also essential for brain health and plays an important role in producing neurotransmitters (brain chemical). It’s also integral in forming enzymes and hormones in the body. From digestion to immunity, from hair to nails, everything requires protein. Some foods rich in protein are: nuts and seeds, egg and dairy products.(how to get a protein rich diet?)

Omega 3 fatty acids:

Banana, avocado, pumpkin seeds and spinach are some food sources of magnesium.(what are some disorders in which magnesium can help?)

Zinc:

Zinc is considered an essential nutrient which means that the body cannot produce or store it. For this reason, it is very important to add zinc in your daily diet. Zinc is required for proper brain function and development, immune function, protein synthesis, wound healing. Some food sources rich in zinc are: nuts, pumpkin seeds, spinach, chicken, shrimp and kidney beans. (How can zinc help with hair and skin health?)

Foods to avoid

Refined sugar: Excessive sugar impairs cognitive skills as well as self control. Moreover, sugar damages the protein in our body, resulting in ageing of organs, which further compromises immunity, growth and functioning. Greatest source of sugar in the average kid’s diet are sugary snacks and beverages like cookies, cakes, candies, fruit juice, soda, and sports drinks. Everything that the child picks up to eat today has strains of added sugar in some form or the other.

Preservatives: Most of the packaged food companies are adding artificial preservatives to delay spoilage and contamination in foods.  Artificial preservatives such as nitrates, benzoates, sulfites, sorbates, parabens, formaldehyde, BHT, BHA and several others can cause serious health hazards such as hypersensitivity, allergy, asthma, hyperactivity, neurological damage.

Refined oil: The high temperature involved in the refining process removes all the natural and beneficial substances from the oil, which is not good for the digestive as well as respiratory health and ultimately affects your immunity.
