Epilepsy is the most common childhood brain disorder which affects children and adults of all races and ethnic backgrounds. About two-thirds of all children with epilepsy outgrow their seizures by the time they are teenagers. However, it is important for parents to understand why maintaining a healthy lifestyle and ensuring regular medical visits is important to manage epilepsy in kids. What is Epilepsy?

Epilepsy is a brain condition that causes a child to have seizures. Also, it is one of the most common disorders of the nervous system. The brain consists of nerve cells that communicate with each other through electrical activity. A seizure occurs when one or more parts of the brain has a burst of abnormal electrical signals that interrupt normal brain signals. Anything that interrupts the normal connections between nerve cells in the brain can cause a seizure including head injuries, infections, poisoning or even brain development problems prior to birth. Though, often a cause for the seizures and epilepsy cannot be found. But when a child has 2 or more seizures with no known cause, this is diagnosed as epilepsy. Types of Seizures:

There are mainly two types of seizures:

1. Generalised Seizures: It means sudden abnormal electrical activity throughout the brain and it includes tonic clonic convulsions and absence seizures.

2. Partial Seizures: Partial seizures means abnormal electrical activity in just one part of the brain. This can spread to other parts as well and includes partial seizure, complex partial seizure and secondarily generalized seizure.

Some seizures are very short, lasting only a few seconds, while others can last a few minutes. A doctor will typically diagnose a child with epilepsy (also called a seizure disorder) if:

  • ​The child has one or more seizures
  • The doctor thinks the child is likely to have a seizure again
  • The seizure was not directly caused by another medical condition, like diabetes or a severe infection

Signs of Epilepsy in Kids: 

Symptoms or signs of epilepsy in kids usually depend upon the type of seizure. Most likely, a person with epilepsy will tend to have the same type of seizure each time. Some common signs or symptoms may include:

  • Sudden jerks in arms
  • Strange feeling
  • Sudden blackout & fainting
  • Stiffness in muscles
  • Twitching or trembling of muscles
  • Psychic symptoms

When to see a doctor?

If your child shows any of the following symptoms, then you must visit a doctor:

  • Seizure that lasts for longer duration, like more than five minutes
  • Pregnancy
  • High fever
  • Any injury due to seizure
  • Can’t regain breathing or consciousness even when seizure attack stops
  • Second seizure follows immediately after the first one

What causes Epilepsy in Kids?

Though a clear cause of epilepsy is not known but the most common cause is an injury to the brain. Other causes include:

  • Low oxygen during birth
  • Infections such as meningitis and encephalitis
  • Brain tumor
  • Stroke
  • Any kind of brain damage
  • Prenatal injury
  • Genetic conditions resulting in brain injury such as tuberculosis

Risk factors of Epilepsy:

Certain factors may increase the risk of epilepsy:

  • Age: Epilepsy is more common during early childhood or after the age of 60
  • Family History: A child with family history of epilepsy is at higher risk of epilepsy.
  • Head injuries: Head injuries also increases the risk of epilepsy.
  • Stroke & other brain infections
  • Dementia

How to diagnose epilepsy in kids?

Initially, your doctor will review symptoms and medical history of the patient and run several tests to diagnose this condition:

  • Neurological examination: To review patient’s behavior, motor abilities, mental function and the type of epilepsy.
  • Blood tests: To diagnose the signs of infections, genetic conditions, or other conditions that may be associated with seizures.
  • Electroencephalogram(EEG): To diagnose epilepsy in which doctors attach electrode to patient’s scalp with paste like substance. These electrodes record electrical activity of brain and help to diagnose the type of seizure.
  • Computerized tomography scan (CT): To check the cross sectional images of brain which helps to reveal abnormalities in brain which are responsible for seizures.
  • Functional MRI (fMRI): To measure the change in blood flow that occurs in specific parts of the brain and to detect the exact locations of critical functions such as speech and movement.
  • Positron emission tomography (PET): A small amount of radioactive material is injected into vein that helps to visualize active areas of brain and detect abnormalities.
  • Neuropsychological tests: To assess patient’s thinking, memory and speech skills and to find out which area is more affected.

Treatment of Epilepsy in Kids:

Treatment for epilepsy usually begins with medication. However, it is important to remember that epilepsy is a complex condition and every child is different. Not every child responds to treatment in the same way, so there is no one “right treatment.”

1.Seizure-prevention drugs

There are many seizure-prevention drugs, called anti-epilepsy drugs (AEDs) or anticonvulsant drugs, in the market. However, it sometimes takes a while to find the one that works best for each child. These drugs do not change the brain’s underlying susceptibility to produce seizures. Rather, they only treat the symptoms of epilepsy by reducing the frequency of seizures. The medication will not work properly until it reaches a certain level in the body, and it is important to maintain that level. For this reason, it is especially important to follow the doctor’s specific medication instructions.

2. OTHER TREATMENTS:

  • Brain surgery
  • Medical devices to prevent and control seizures
  • Dietary therapies (e.g. ketogenic diet, modified Atkins diet, low glycemic index treatment)

Ingredients:
  • 1/3 cup each cornflakes(crushed), wheat flour and oats
  • Handful choco chips
  • Pinch salt
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon powder
  • 2-3 tbsp milk/almond milk
  • 3 tbsp Iyurved chocolate spread(order here)

Procedure:

Take cornflakes, wheat flour, oats, choco chips, pinch salt, cinnamon. Add Iyurved chocolate spread(order here) and mix well. Add milk as little as to make sticky dough. Take small scoop of dough and place on lined baking tray. Preheat oven for 5 min. Bake at 200 Celsius for 15 min. Once edges begin to brown, take it out. Cool on rack. Once completely cool, eat right away.

1 से 2 चम्मच गुनगुना सरसों का तेल लें और उसमें आधा चम्मच सेंधा नमक मिलाएं। फिर इस तेल से बच्चे की छाती और पीठ पर धीरे से मालिश करें, सूती कपड़े से ढक दें। सरसों के तेल की गर्माहट कंजेशन से राहत दिलाने में मदद करती है।

मुलेठी:

एक गिलास गुनगुने पानी में एक चम्मच मुलेठी का चूर्ण एक चम्मच शहद के साथ मिलाकर अपने बच्चों को दिन में दो बार पिलाने से आराम मिलता है। (बच्चों में रोग प्रतिरोधक क्षमता बढ़ाने के लिए कौन से खाद्य पदार्थ अच्छे हैं?)

अदरक और शहद:

अदरक के रस को कद्दूकस करके निकाल लें और उसमें थोडा सा शहद मिला लें। इस मिश्रण को अपने 1 वर्ष से अधिक उम्र के बच्चे को दिन में दो बार जल्दी राहत के लिए दें।

गर्म पानी:

एक गिलास गर्म पानी में थोड़ा नींबू का रस निचोड़ें और स्वाद के लिए शहद मिलाएं। यह उपाय एक वर्ष से अधिक उम्र के बच्चों के लिए है। (बच्चों को पानी देने की सही उम्र क्या है?)

हल्दी वाला दूध:

एक गिलास गर्म दूध में हल्दी पाउडर मिलाएं और इसे अपने बच्चे को हर रात पिलाएं। इससे गले में दर्द और बहती नाक में तुरंत आराम मिलता है।

 भाप:

यदि आपका छोटा बच्चा सर्दी से पीड़ित है और उसे सांस लेने में तकलीफ है, तो उसे भाप इनहेल करने दें। एक चौड़े कटोरे में पानी गरम करें और बच्चे को कम से कम १० से १५ मिनट के लिए गर्म भाप इनहेल करने दें या स्टीमर का उपयोग करें। नीलगिरी के तेल सेआपके बच्चे के सिस्टम को शांत करने में भी मदद मिल सकती है।

जलयोजन:

नियमित अंतराल पर गुनगुना पानी पीने से सामान्य सर्दी से लड़ने में मदद मिलेगी और गले में सूजन कम होगी। गर्म सूप या ताजा जूस भी शरीर की खोई हुई ऊर्जा को फिर से भरने में मदद करेगा।

 नमक गरारे करना:

एक गिलास गर्म पानी में एक चम्मच नमक मिलाकर पीने से गले की खराश दूर होती है। अपने बच्चे को दिन में दो बार नमक के पानी से गरारे करने के लिए कहें। खारा पानी दर्द को शांत करने में मदद करता है।

सोने की स्थिति:

काली मिर्च:

आहार:

With every changing season, the biggest concern amongst parents around the globe is to prevent their kids from cold, cough and flu. Children start to get cold and cough after about six months of age when the immunity they received from their mom fades and they have to build up their own immunity. Cough and cold is one of the most common complaints for which parents take their children to a doctor. Some cough and cold home remedy and foods can help to cure the symptoms and build immunity in kids. Understanding different types of cough helps to treat them better.

How cold and cough affects the immunity of a child?

Children catch cold or cough, when a virus comes in contact with the lining of nose and throat. There are more than two hundred different viruses causing cold and cough in children, but the Rhinovirus is the most common offender. The symptoms include stuffy or runny nose, sneezing and coughing. However, flu symptoms are more severe than cold and include fever, headache, sore throat, congestion. Every time when kids get infected with a specific virus, their immune system develops antibodies, which help them to fight against it next time. But there are lots of different viruses, so it takes time to build an effective immune system. Many a times, taking medicines for these symptoms can give immediate relief but affect the immunity of a child negatively.

Which foods can help to boost immunity in children?

Giloy:

It is a shrub and an essential herb in ayurvedic medicines. Giloy is used to treat a wide range of health conditions. It contains important plant compounds like terpenoids, alkaloids, lignans, and steroids. Research shows that these compounds have antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antidiabetic properties, among other benefits which help to boost immunity.

Tulsi:

Tulsi leaves have been scientifically proven to have medicinal properties. It also has antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal effects, rich in vitamin c and zinc and thus keeps the infection at a bay and naturally boosts the immunity.

Amla:

Amla is a storehouse of antioxidants. It is one of the richest sources of vitamin C, which is known to boost immunity. It has antibacterial and astringent properties that boosts immunity.

Ashwagandha:

As an anti-oxidant, boosting immunity is one of the most popular benefits of Ashwagandha for kids. The root activates and increases the levels of enzymes and macrophages, a type of white blood cell that kills bad viruses and bacteria. It also promotes the development of antibodies, which is a major factor in improving the body’s response to a health-threatening infection.

TURMERIC:

A compound found in turmeric, Curcumin, offers therapeutic relief and is a perfect immunity booster for kids. It has a a very high antioxidant value to protect body from invading infections. It is also rich in vitamin A, Thiamine (B1), Riboflavin (B2) and vitamin C.

Nuts:

The vitamin E found in nuts like almonds, cashews, peanuts and hazelnut help the immune system to fight against invading bacteria. They are a great source of antioxidants that keep the body healthy and disease free by neutralizing free radicals and reducing inflammation. Nuts are beneficial for brain development as well. Seeds:

Seeds are an incredible source of nutrients. Sunflower seeds are rich in magnesium, vitamin E, antioxidants and good fats. Together they help to boost immunity. Pumpkin seeds are rich in Vitamin E which is necessary for immunity building and also packed with other bone-building nutrients like potassium, magnesium and vitamin K. Melon seeds are a good source of zinc. It helps to boost our immunity, helps in digestion, cell growth, and keeps your nervous system healthy.

Antioxidants:

Cocoa contains flavonoid, a naturally occurring compound found in plants which act as antioxidant and help in counteracting free radicals in the body. Also rich in zinc, iron, copper, and vitamins like A, B12 and K. Vitamin E is a potent antioxidant and has an ability to modulate host immune functions. Vitamin E is key for strong immunity and healthy skin and eyes. In recent years, vitamin E supplements have become popular as antioxidants.

COUGH AND COLD HOME REMEDY for kids:

Massage:
  • Heat mustard oil and roast garlic and carom seeds in it. Once cool, apply this oil on the baby’s head, palm, feet base, chest and back. Leave it applied and let the child sleep. It will help settle the cold and cough both. Also, any body ache the child has will be resolved. Mustard oil is a very effective cough and cold home remedy.
  • Take1 to 2 tbs of lukewarm mustard oil and mix half a teaspoon of rock salt. Then, massage this oil gently on the baby’s chest and back, cover with cotton cloth. The warmth of mustard oil helps in relieving congestion.
Mulethi:

Mix a spoon of mulethi (Licorice) powder with a spoonful of honey in a glass of lukewarm water and make your kids take this twice a day to get relief. (Which foods are good for boosting immunity in kids?)

Ginger & Honey:

Take out some ginger juice by grating it and mix it with some honey. Give this mixture to your child above 1 year twice a day for quick relief.

Warm water:

Squeeze some lemon juice in a glass of warm water and add honey for taste. This remedy is for older kids above one year. (What is the right age to give water to babies?)

Turmeric milk:

Add turmeric powder to a glass of warm milk and make your kid have it every night. This provides instant relief for an aching throat and runny nose.

 Steam: 

If your little one suffers from cold and has trouble breathing, give him/her steam inhalation. Heat water in a wide bowl and make the kid inhale the hot fumes for at least 10 to 15 minutes or use a steamer. Adding eucalyptus oil can also help soothe your child’s system.

Hydration:

Drinking lukewarm water at regular intervals will help fight the common cold and reduce the inflammation in the throat. Warm soup or a fresh juice will also help to replenish the body’s lost energy.

 Salt gargling: 

A glass of hot water with a teaspoon of salt is very beneficial to ease a sore throat. Ask your kid to gargle with salt water twice a day. The saline water helps soothe the pain.

Sleeping Position:

Keep your child’s head in an elevated position to give some relief from cough and blocked nose that perpetuates through the night. (How sleep and brain development is related?)

Black pepper:

Roasting pepper in ghee and consuming it 2-3 times a day helps in easing congestion and blocked nose. In addition, pepper is rich in vitamin C that helps to boost immunity.

Diet:

Avoid fried and spicy food to prevent acid reflux which might trigger cough and cold. Soft and warm foods like soups, daliya and khichdi are easy to eat and digest. Recipe for Sabudana Kheer by Iyurved
Ingredients:
  • Ghee- 1tsp
  • Soaked sabudana or tapioca- 1/4 cup
  • Iyurved’s 7 nuts & 5 herbs Savoury spread (order here) – 1tbsp
  • Dates puree/ jaggery powder -1tsp
  • Milk-1 cup
Method:

On a pan, heat ghee and add soaked sabudana after straining the water. Now, add Iyurved’s Savoury Spread (order here), milk and mix well. Cook well until the milk thickens and sabudana is soft. Healthy Sabudana kheer is ready to serve. The savoury spread will not change the taste of the kheer.
