Nutrient Deficiency : 10 Signs of Protein Deficiency in Kids

deficiency nutrient Iyurved

A great philosopher once quoted “Life is the Mode of Action of Protein”. Couldn’t agree more, can I? To elaborate more, protein is known as the building block of your body. Protein is essential in almost everything, including hair, skin, muscles, energy, hormones, body tissues, and enzymes. While protein is an important nutrient for your body, it is possible that you are protein-deficient. This nutrient deficiency occurs when your protein intake is insufficient to meet your body’s needs. This deficiency can affect almost all vital body functions and cause a variety of health issues. This deficiency is more common in people or children who have an unbalanced diet structure. So next time, if your body shows any signs and symptoms of protein – Do not let it go unattended.

Listing below the signs that you need to look out to find out whether your child’s body is protein deficient or not.

WHATSAPP for concerns like Speech Delay, Low Weight, Frequent Illness, Hyperactivity, Low Concentration, Weak Eyesight, Improper Sleep, Pigmentation, Pores, Face Marks, Fine Lines , Lactation etc.

SIGNS OF PROTEIN DEFICIENCY IN KIDS:

1. Appetite:

There are two aspects here when appetite is considered. If your child has a milder nutrient (protein) deficiency then the appetite might increase. That is, when your body does not get enough amounts of protein, it attempts to restore the protein by increasing the appetite and encouraging you to find something to eat. (Here, majorly kids tend to crave junk foods more) Whereas, on the other hand, if your child has severe protein deficiency, then the appetite may seem to be poor.

2. Weak Bones:

Along with muscles, bones are also affected by low protein intake. Protein benefits the bones with strength and density. Therefore, deficiency of protein may increase the risk of bone fractures in kids as it weakens the bones.

3. Feeling Sluggish:

Not consuming enough protein can affect the muscles that are accountable for movement and posture. Moreover, it slows down the metabolism of the body. In addition to this, protein deficiency is also linked to anaemia which is the primary cause of sluggish feeling.

4. Low Immunity:

Lack of protein in your body may hamper you child’s immunity. Amino acids (proteins) in the blood assists the body’s immune system to produce antibodies that activate the cells to fight off against different viruses and bacteria. Also, studies have also shown that protein can alter the levels of diseases fighting good bacteria in the gut which is also responsible in building the immunity.

5. Slow wound healing:

Our skin is majorly made up of collagen. Collagen is responsible for holding the body together. It plays a major role in providing strength and structure. It is mostly present in bones, connective tissues, tendons, skin, muscles and ligaments. Therefore, protein is of crucial importance when it comes to wound healing. If you feel that your child is taking long enough to heal the wounds, check on the protein levels.

6. Skin, Hair and Nail:

Flaky, dry, split skin, redness, depigmentation, hair thinning, hair loss, brittle nails and fading of hair colour are all signs of protein nutrient deficiency.  Skin, hair and nails are majorly made up of proteins. Protein is known to give skin tissues its texture, durability, rigidity and structure. Moreover, it helps in keeping the skin hydrated and firm. It is an important part of hair and nails too. They are responsible for increasing hair thickness, quality and scalp coverage. Moreover, they help in strengthening nails thus preventing brittleness. (Healthy hair and skin foods)

7. Delayed growth:

Protein is vital for overall body growth and proper body functioning in kids especially during their growing phases. Therefore, it is of crucial importance to consume healthy proteins to ensure proper growth. Studies have shown that kids having low protein intake show impaired growth.

8. Lack of concentration:

In simple words, the brain uses a chemical to communicate information between cells. Most of these chemicals are made up of amino acids i.e., proteins. That means, when the body becomes deficient in proteins it would change how your brain works. It affects your mood, behaviour and concentration too.

9. Lack of muscle strength:

The simple logic behind this is, when your body lacks protein, it tends to draw it from the muscles (largest storage of protein) in order to preserve important body functions. This results in muscle wasting. Over a period of time, your child may feel a lack of muscle strength or find it harder to balance themselves.

10. Edema (Swollen/Puffy Skin):

This is a symptom of severe protein deficiency which causes swelling majorly on feet, ankle and legs. Acute protein deficiency may trap excess fluid in the tissues which results in swelling.

HOW MUCH PROTEIN DO KIDS REQUIRE?

Protein requirements in kids (or be it adults) depends on multiple factors such as age, weight, height, muscle mass, physical activities, genes. Generally speaking, the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of most people must be around 0.8 grams of protein per kg per day.

But what is exactly is vitamin E and what are the benefits of vitamin E for skin and hair? This read will help you understand Vitamin E and its benefits for skin and hair.

WHATSAPP for concerns like Speech Delay, Low Weight, Frequent Illness, Hyperactivity, Low Concentration, Weak Eyesight, Improper Sleep, Pigmentation, Pores, Face Marks, Fine Lines , Lactation etc.

What is Vitamin E ?

‘Alpha-Tocopherol’ is the chemical name for Vitamin E. It is a fat-soluble vitamin that plays a role as an antioxidant, shielding cellular membranes from the harm caused by free radicals in the environment. Vitamin E, as an antioxidant, is analogous to the good fairy in nursery rhymes, who utilises her superpowers to kill or expel the evil witch, in this instance free radicals!! There are several benefits of Vitamin E for skin, hair and overall wellness.

Benefits of Vitamin E for skin:

1. Good Moisturizing agent:

It repairs and rejuvenates dull skin by preventing moisture loss, which is the cause of dehydration.

Apply a few drops of Vitamin E oil to your skin before sleep, mixed either in your normal moisturiser or in virgin olive oil.

2. Reverses PREMATURE AGING OF SKIN:

Vitamin E helps your body and skin age gracefully, preventing wrinkles, dullness, and sagging. Being the most powerful antioxidant, it aids in the restoration of damaged skin by retaining moisture. It also boosts the formation of the protein collagen, which is responsible for preserving the skin’s elasticity, resulting in a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles, which are the earliest indications of ageing. Avoiding direct sunlight and using sunscreen is the best approach to avoid wrinkles.

3. Heals SUnburns:

UV light produces free radical damage, which can cause dark patches and burns. Vitamin E heals and soothes sunburned skin while neutralising the damage.

Simply take a few drops of vitamin E and Vitamin C oil and gently massage it into the affected region of the skin. Vitamin C and E, when combined, can function as a natural sunscreen, shielding the skin from the sun’s damaging rays. (How to apply sunscreen?)

4. Reduces dark spots:

Hyperpigmentation, which appears as dark blotches, is one of the damages caused by free radicals and due to excess production of melanin. Since vitamin E aids cell regeneration, your skin heals far more quickly, allowing you to say goodbye to old patches and welcome new, healthier skin.

Mix the contents of a vitamin E capsule with a spoon of moisturiser or olive oil and apply it once a day to the dark regions and patches. If you stick with the therapy for a while, the dark lines and spots will brighten dramatically.

5. Fades stretch marks:

Stretch marks are white striations on the skin that occur as a result of overstretching, causing the skin to lose elasticity and flexibility. It’s a rather typical pregnancy and weight gain adverse effect. Vitamin E boosts collagen formation and strengthens the skin’s damaged areas.
Vitamin E oil, when applied regularly and gently to stretch marks, improves suppleness and clears stretch marks.

Benefits of Vitamin E for Hair:

1. PROMOTES HAIR GROWTH:

Antioxidants have the property of improving blood flow in the body and the scalp. As a result, increased blood flow conditions the hair strands from the root to the shaft. Furthermore, vitamin E repairs broken and damaged hair follicles, supporting healthy hair growth. ( 9 Effective Hair oil for hair growth)

Gently dissolve one or two vitamin E capsules in warm olive or coconut oil, massage into the scalp and hair, and leave for an hour. For best results, rinse with warm water.

2. prevents split ends:

We would all enjoy and love having our hair coloured, straightened, and styled!!! Unsurprisingly, split ends are the negative side effect of these acts. Vitamin E can aid in the neutralisation of free radicals that might harm your hair follicles and mend split ends. Deep oil conditioning massages that assist to repair hair cuticles and heal split ends are a simple way to soothe your scalp and hair at the same time.

Mix equal parts olive oil, coconut oil, vitamin E oil, and any other oil and gently massage the scalp to nourish it. Rub it gently into the broken ends to close them and prevent additional splitting.

3. Reduces dandruff:

Dandruff is an annoyance as well as a source of embarrassment. A dry scalp causes dandruff by promoting excess oil production in the sebaceous glands. This oil then clogs the hair follicles, causing dandruff and an itchy scalp. Vitamin E prevents dandruff by regulating moisture and oil production on the scalp.

Mix 1 tbsp of coconut oil, vitamin E oil, tea tree oil and apply to the hair and leave it for 2-3 hours and then wash your hair. Doing this twice a week helps you to get rid of dandruff.

4. Prevents PREMATURE GREYING OF HAIR:

Grey hair is a result of the disintegration of hair tissues. Vitamin E contains potent antioxidants that prevent tissue degradation and premature greying. Oiling your hair with Vitamin E oil on a regular basis may do wonders for deep conditioning and maintaining strong hair tissues. ( Home remedies to treat grey hair in kids)

Vitamin E nourishes your scalp and hair deeply. Hairfall will be reduced and better-quality hair will develop as a result of a well-nourished scalp and hair. 6 Oily Scalp Home Remedies and Tips for Hair Care

tips hair care oily scalp Iyurved

Do you frequently have oily scalp after thoroughly washing it for a day or two? You are not, however, alone. A small amount of oil on the scalp is acceptable because it protects the hair. An abnormally oily scalp, on the other hand, can be a problem if it causes your hair to feel greasy! An oily scalp can cause scalp itching, dandruff, infection, hair loss, and other issues. Let’s learn more about the oily scalp causes, prevention, remedies for oily scalp and tips for hair care.

WHATSAPP for concerns like Speech Delay, Low Weight, Frequent Illness, Hyperactivity, Low Concentration, Weak Eyesight, Improper Sleep, Pigmentation, Pores, Face Marks, Fine Lines , Lactation etc.

What causes oily scalp?

Oily scalp can be caused by a variety of factors, including pollution and environmental factors.

Excess sebum production:

This is the root cause of oily scalp. Sebum is simply a protective oil that is secreted naturally to lubricate hair follicles and prevent moisture loss. Sebum overproduction can result in oily skin and other skin conditions such as dandruff.

Lack of personal hygiene:

This aggravates the situation. If you have a habit of not washing your hair for an extended period of time, using unwashed hair tools, and sleeping on dirty pillowcases and bed sheets, you may develop an oily scalp. It’s time to break the habit!

Stress:

You may not realise it, but stress causes your sebaceous glands to go into overdrive and produce more sebum (oil), resulting in an oily scalp. This states that stress and oily scalp go hand in hand!

Genetics:

Few factors are not in our control. This is one of them. The amount of oil produced by your glands and the thickness of your hair may be influenced by your genes. If someone in your close family has an abnormally oily scalp, there’s a good risk you’ll have it too.

Hormonal fluctuations:

Scientific research shows that hormonal changes can lead to oily scalp. When there are these sudden changes in the body, the body produces more testosterones thus, increasing the oily scalp.

Diet:

Diet has an impact on the scalp as much as the rest of the body. Consuming an unhealthy diet that is generally low in nutritional content deprives your hair of important nutrients, resulting in an oily scalp.

8 Effective Home Remedies and Foods for Facial Hair

FACIAL HAIR FOR WOMEN

‘Facial hair in women’, a concept we dismiss as too unpleasant to even speak openly, is actually a natural phenomenon. All women have body and facial hair, although the majority of the time, the facial hair is light in colour and thin in nature. For some women, though, hair growth is vast and coarse. As a result, we have come up with an article to get rid of facial hair for women with the use of simple home remedies that don’t cost a fortune. (5 Tips and foods to manage PCOS in teens)

WHATSAPP for concerns like Speech Delay, Low Weight, Frequent Illness, Hyperactivity, Low Concentration, Weak Eyesight, Improper Sleep, Pigmentation, Pores, Face Marks, Fine Lines , Lactation etc.

Causes of facial hair in women

All women have very fine, unnoticeable facial hair. However, only a few people have dense facial hair. The fuzz of hair on a woman’s face can be caused by a variety of factors. Let us go through them in detail. (Hormone happy fruits for kids and teens)

1. Hormones

One of the most common reasons for facial hair for women is hormonal imbalance. The most prevalent cause of excessive female growth is abnormal or above-normal amounts of androgens (the male hormone testosterone). Androgens are hormones that control male traits in the human body. Men and women both create masculine and feminine hormones. However, certain girls may have an overabundance of androgens, resulting in male pattern hair growth, a deep voice like a man, weight fluctuations, and so on.

Excess androgen production might be caused by health issues such as polycystic ovarian syndrome, Cushing syndrome, and thyroid imbalance. (5 foods to manage hormonal imbalances in kids and teens)

2. GENETICS

If a female has regular periods and no other illnesses, the cause of extra hair is most likely hereditary. If your grandmother, mother, or other women in your family have excessive facial hair, you are likely to have it as well.

3. Stress

Certain phases in the girl’s life may be pretty stressful like the changes in school, work,  family, and relationships. To help the body keep up, the adrenal glands release stress hormones in certain situations. Because the adrenal glands produce androgen hormones, increasing stress may result in an increase in the amount of androgens in circulation causing the growth of unwanted facial hair.

4. Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)

Just like hormonal changes, PCOS in teens and adults ( a type of hormonal imbalance) are part of normal puberty and is quite common these days.PCOS affects 6-10% of women and can manifest in females as young as eleven years old. Overproduction of androgens, a family of hormones responsible for masculine traits, causes this abnormal condition. Although hirsutism—unwanted or abundant facial hair—is one of the signs of PCOS, facial hair growth by itself does not indicate the condition. (6 foods for period pain in teens)

Home remedies for facial hair for women

Women employed natural home treatments for facial hair for women decades ago when there were no other options. These solutions are inexpensive because they simply call for a few common ingredients that you may already have on hand. These natural remedies are simple to produce, safe to use and provide long-term benefits. So, why not try one of the home remedies for facial hair for women listed below?

1. Lemon juice and sugar

This is an age-old beauty technique for getting rid of unwanted hair.

Combine the sugar, lemon juice, and a small amount of water in a small mixing bowl. To dissolve the sugar, whisk it vigorously until it forms a sticky granular paste. Scrub well after 30 minutes. The hair sticks to the pack and when it’s removed, the hair comes off with it.

2. Banana and oatmeal

The oatmeal removes hair as well as dead skin, while the banana moisturises the skin.

Mash the banana and then combine it with the oatmeal powder. Apply the paste and massage it in a circular motion against the growth of your hair. Allow it to dry completely before rubbing it off with your fingertips to remove facial hair.

3.Gram flour and rose water

Gram flour has excellent exfoliating properties, and when paired with the benefits of rose water, it slows hair growth.

Combine 2 tbsp gram flour, 2 tbsp rose water, 1 tbsp lemon juice in a bowl. Combine all of the ingredients to make a paste and apply it to your face. Allow it to dry fully before rubbing it off with your fingertips. Repeat this three to four times a week for best results. It is one of the best home remedy for removing facial hair.

4. Papaya and turmeric

Papaya includes an enzyme called papain, which is known to help eliminate facial hair, and turmeric gives the face a healthy and beautiful shine, hence, this home remedy for hair removal is also a glow-boosting one.

Cut a papaya slice into little pieces and mash it to make a paste, then add half a teaspoon of turmeric to it. Mix well and only apply to places where undesired hair growth occurs. Massage for a few minutes, then leave it on for another 15-20 minutes. Wash with lukewarm water. For optimal results, repeat this home treatment to eliminate facial hair twice a week.

5.Honey and sugar

Sugar gently exfoliates the skin’s surface, removing dead skin cells and facial hair, whilst honey heals and nourishes the skin, making it one of the greatest home remedies for facial hair removal.

In a bowl, combine one tablespoon of honey, two tablespoons of sugar, and one tablespoon of water. Microwave the mixture in a bowl for 30 seconds, or until the sugar melts. Apply the paste to the parts of your face where you have unsightly facial hair. Apply the paste and massage it in a circular motion on your hair’s growth. Allow it to dry completely before removing facial hair with your hands.

6. Turmeric, Rice flour and milk

Turmeric has been shown to inhibit hair growth while also adding a healthy and attractive sheen to the face, while milk works as a light exfoliating and moisturising agent.

Combine rice flour, turmeric and milk in a bowl and apply the mask over the area of unwanted hair and let it dry. Wash it off with warm water.

7. Aloe vera and papaya

Hair removal is aided by the papain enzyme, while skin moisturization is aided by aloe vera.

Combine aloe vera pulp, papaya paste, gram flour, and mustard oil to form a thick paste. Apply the paste to the surface and allow it to dry. Rub the dry mask in the opposite direction of hair growth with a cotton cloth. Wash it off and massage a few drops of coconut oil into the skin.

8. Potato and lemon juice

Potato juice, honey, and lemon juice are bleaching agents that brighten skin and hair colour, while green gram flour aids in hair removal.

Grate the potato and squeeze the juice out of it. To make a fine paste, combine green gram flour, lemon juice, honey, and potato juice. Apply the pack to your face. Rub it in a circular manner and remove it, once it has dried completely. Use it twice a week for optimal results.

Foods to consume to get rid of facial hair in women

To get rid of facial hair, you should consume a lot more of the following foods.

1. Magnesium, zinc and copper rich foods:

These essential minerals can help to prevent facial hair by reducing testosterone’s action. Magnesium may be obtained from foods such as soybeans, whole grains, seeds, and nuts. Zinc may be found in pumpkin seeds, peanuts, and dark chocolate. Copper is abundant in spirulina, leafy green vegetables, sunflower seeds, chickpeas, lentils, cashews, almonds, chia seeds, raisins, and sesame seeds.

2. Vitamin b6 rich foods:

Vitamin B6 reduces the female body’s synthesis of prolactin, a hormone that is responsible for the release of testosterone, which causes facial hair. Avocados, salmon, organ meats, soybeans, walnuts, peanuts, whole grains, spinach, bananas, and other fruits contain this vitamin.

3. Vitamin A RICH FOODS:

Vitamin A suppresses facial hair by regulating testosterone levels in the body. It serves the same purpose as Vitamin B6. Papaya, carrots, sweet potato, green leafy vegetables, pumpkin, milk, fish, and other natural sources of Vitamin A include papaya, carrots, sweet potato, green leafy vegetables, pumpkin, milk, and fish.

4. NUTS AND SEEDS

They are high in vitamin E, which can lower testosterone levels in the body by reducing the effects of androgens.  Nuts and seeds might help you get rid of unwanted facial hair by adding them to your diet. Nuts like almonds and peanuts, as well as seeds like pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds, reduce facial hair growth.

5. Manjistha

Manjistha is extremely useful to balance hormones and reduce unwanted facial hair caused due to PCOS. It is a herb known for its blood purifying properties and ability to restore uterine health. It is also well known for treating pimples, excessive facial growth, hair fall, improving moods, controlling heavy bleeding and aiding in the regulation of periods as well as treating PCOS in teens and adults.

6. TURMERIC

Turmeric (Haldi) has medicinal properties that aid in the treatment of a variety of medical conditions. It aids in hormone balance and menstrual cycle regulation in females. Although it is commonly used in home treatments to inhibit facial hair growth, it may also be consumed for the same purpose.

grey in hair

Greying of hair reasons / causes:

If you observe your child’s hair becoming grey or white frequently, it’s most likely due to a deficiency in his body. While there are a variety of causes for white hair in children, most of them may be treated and cured. The following are some of the most prevalent greying of hair reasons for white hair in kids.

1. Genetics

Genetics is the most prevalent cause of premature greying of hair in children. Simply said, if the parents or grandparents had premature greying of hair as a kid, the offspring are at a higher risk of developing the disorder as well. The early beginning of greying hair may be handed down the generations, and it is a primary premature greying of hair reason in children.

2. Vitamin B12 deficiency

A lack of Vitamin B12 in the body can be another greying of hair reasons in kids. Because a vegetarian diet lacks sufficient amounts of vitamin B12, children who follow a vegetarian diet are in danger of developing this condition.

3. Other medical conditions

Premature greying of children’s hair might be a sign of something more serious. Hair loss is a sign of a variety of diseases, including vitiligo and piebaldism. Melanin is the pigment that gives our skin and hair their colour. Vitiligo is a condition in which the melanocytes in the skin are unable to synthesise melanin, resulting in white patches. Similarly, if the thyroid gland isn’t functioning properly, it might cause overactivity or underactivity. This disorder occurs in a variety of conditions, including Grave’s disease and Hashimoto’s disease, and is found to be the premature greying of hair reasons.

4. Stress

Premature greying of hair in kids can happen due to stress, but this is uncommon. Stress is not the same as psychological stress in this context. It is called genotoxic stress, and it is brought on by environmental factors.

5. AnAemia

Anaemia, which causes fatigue and hair whitening in children, can be caused by an iron deficiency. Pernicious anaemia can also cause children’s hair to grey.

6. Unhealthy eating habits

It’s no surprise that premature greying is becoming more widespread in the current world, due to the fast-food lifestyle. The other two conditions like Menkes hair syndrome and Kwashiorkor (protein deficiency) are also premature greying of hair reasons in children.

7. Over use of synthetic soaps and shampoos

Hair product quality has deteriorated over time, as we all know. Children’s hair might become harsh and even grey as a result of the synthetic soaps and shampoos they use nowadays. Adult shampoo can make a child’s hair harsh and frizzy, so as a parent, you must be cautious from the beginning. Baby shampoo must be used on your child since it includes vitamin and mineral extracts. You may also wash your child’s hair with homemade or herbal shampoos. ( Dry and Frizzy Hair Home remedies)
