Daily requirement of vitamins for Kids: Do they need them and which one?

Vitamins help the body grow and work the way it should. There are 13 essential Vitamins — Vitamins A, C, D, E, K, and Vitamin Bs. Some help in eyesight and energy production. While others support healthy nerves and cells and in fighting infections. The food that kids eat should meet their daily requirement of vitamins.

Daily requirement of vitamins

Vitamins are found in the food we eat. Some like D, K can also be partially produced by our body. A balanced meal full of a variety of grains, nuts, vegetables and fruits will meet the daily requirement of vitamins for kids. Nature has packed food in such a way that the nutrition received is well-balanced with complementary nutrients

For example, Nuts have a variety of Vitamin Bs and E. However, for the vitamins to be absorbed efficiently by the body, they have to be consumed with fiber. So consuming the vitamin naturally in the form of the nut itself (vs. a pill) is not only easy but also essential for its maximum absorption by the body. Secondly, consuming vitamins through nuts fairly reduces the chance of over consumption of any vitamins vs. popping pills in the mouth (excessive consumption of any vitamin can have adverse effects on the body organs). Lastly, consuming the nut not only gives us Vitamin Bs and E but a lot more added goodness in the form of fibre and phytonutrients.

While it is usually preferred to get the nutrients a child needs from food rather than a pill, syrup or gummy, it is not always possible. That’s because some kids are picky eaters and their intake of food is limited to a chosen few. This results in a deficiency of some key vitamins (mentioned below) in their body. The solution here is to introduce multivitamins which are made of real food (like nuts, beans, veggies, fruits), in kids most loved formats (e.g. chocolate spread or crisps) and tasty to consume directly or easy to hide in meals.

Vitamin A:
  • It is one of the essential vitamins for kids eyesight, immunity and reproduction of tissues (of skin). The body cannot manufacture this and it needs to be included in the diet and consumed with fat (oil) since it is a fat soluble vitamin. Lightly sautéing carrot in oil becomes a great food supplement for children to meet vitamin A nutrition. This vitamin is heat sensitive so has to be cooked lightly.
Vitamin Bs:
  • These vitamins are required to release energy from food, providing fuel to perform daily activities and supporting brain function. As children grow older, their requirements for this group of vitamins increase to help them cope with more energetic lifestyles. Inadequate intake of Vitamin Bs can lead to anaemia (low haemoglobin production), which may result in tiredness and lethargy. Food sources of Vitamin B like milk, nuts, greens etc should be stored away from direct light, since light can reduce the level of vitamin in the food. It is a best food supplement for children and adults as well to get strong hairs and healthy scalp.
Vitamin C:
  • Our body does not produce vitamin C and hence it becomes necessary to consume it through foods.Kids should consume a sufficient amount of Vitamin C during growing years to support development of bones and teeth. Vitamin C helps heal the wound as it repairs body tissues. It also helps in absorption of iron in the body. Guava, oranges, papaya, kiwifruit, tomatoes are some food supplements for children to meet daily requirements of this vitamin. (Easiest Vitamin C for kids)
vitamin D:
  • Every single cell in the body requires this Vitamin. Body can also produce this through cholesterol exposure to sunlight. However, deficiency of Vitamin D is common in kids and results in weaker bones and muscles, fatigue, depression, body pain, and extreme hair loss (alopecia). Vitamin D too has to be consumed with fat (oil). For e.g. Cheese has vitamin D and fat both, so it’s a great food supplement for children to meet this nutrition.
Vitamin E:
  • It is an important vitamin that also acts as a powerful antioxidant, which helps to protect the body against damage caused by free radicals (pollution, lifestyle, stress, processed food).Vitamin E is a fat soluble vitamin which can be stored in the body. It is rarely found deficient in kids who eat nuts, seeds and greens. This vitamin is vital in protecting against any infections and damage to eyes, skin, brain and enables regeneration of cells to keep organs healthy and active.
Vitamin K:
  • It is an important vitamin that promotes healthy bones and supports proper blood clotting (thereby preventing excessive bleeding). Vitamin K is a fat-soluble vitamin that can be stored in the body. This vitamin’s food supplement for children is found in greens, veggies, nuts, seeds, dry fruits. Vitamin K is also produced by the body through good bacteria found in the gut. Any deficiency in this can reflect in excessive bleeding during periods, bruising, oozing from teeth or gums.

Cashews: 6 reasons to feed your child everyday

cashew nuts benefits for health

Survey of 150 parents reflected on the top concerns they had for their kids. Some of the concerns, mentioned below, can be improved with the consumption of just a single nut- Cashew! Are cashew nuts good for health? What are the benefits of cashew nut? Consuming just 4-8 cashews for kids aged 3 to 15 years is enough to aid daily nutrition. Cashew nuts benefits for health include improved bones, eyesight, skin, hair, digestion and energy levels.

Cashews are increasingly becoming common as cooking medium in households. They are just perfect replacement to dairy-based cheese or milk. Worldwide, families are preferring plant-based cashew for their vegan diet. Not only is the nut nutritious, but it is also extremely creamy and slightly sweetish in flavour which works perfect for various desserts and gravy.

WHATSAPP for concerns like Speech Delay, Low Weight, Frequent Illness, Hyperactivity, Low Concentration, Weak Eyesight, Improper Sleep, Pigmentation, Pores, Face Marks, Fine Lines , Lactation etc.

Overall health:

Cashew is a great source of antioxidants that keep body healthy and disease free by neutralising free radicals and reducing inflammation. Study presents that roasted cashews appear to have an increased antioxidant level compared with raw cashews.

Bones:

Benefits of raw cashew nuts include stronger bones. Being high in Copper, Calcium, Manganese and Magnesium, this nut supports stronger bones. Deficiency of these minerals have shown to cause osteoporosis later in life.

Eyesight:

Due to excessive pollution and screen time, kids often suffer from eye infection and weak vision. Cashews contains a powerful antioxidant called Zea Xanthin which is absorbed by retina and helps in maintaining eye health.

Digestion:

Cashews are good source of fibre which aids in better digestion. Some research suggests that consuming whole, raw cashews benefits in weight loss too since only 70% fat of the nut is absorbed by the body and the rest is excreted with fibre. However excessive consumption may cause bloating.

High Energy:

Cashews are one of the most ideal source of quick energy for atheletes since they are high in protein. It is also a rich source of copper which is necessary to absorb iron in the body to keep energy levels high (haemoglobin high)

Hair and Skin:

Another benefits of cashew nuts are improved hair & skin. Copper in cashew helps in building skin and hair pigment which also gives the color and shine. It also supports production of collagen and elastin resulting in healthy skin.

Cashews should be consumed raw, not salted. This is primarily because cashew and salt together decrease the nutrition of the body. Cashew is a great source of calcium for bones. Salt has sodium. When calcium combines with sodium, it results in lack of absorption of calcium by the body which causes weaker bones and teeth. You can read more about this here.

There is some research on how the nutrition property changes when the nuts are consumed raw vs. roasted. For cashews, roasting the nut increases the lineolic acid (good for our brain, heart) significantly. Roast and enjoy!

Kids notice format of food and not the food

We understand that making Healthy food is as big a challenge as feeding food to kids! Making food that looks great can help in feeding to kids, as most of the kids notice format of the food rather than the food itself.

In a perfect scenario, a mother would want her child to pick up the veggies, fruits and nuts on a daily basis. But it seems like most mothers are far away from the ideal situation. Forget kids, even adults notice format of food and fuss over eating certain fruits and vegetables. Nevertheless, what we can’t forget is that every fruit and vegetable we avoid, we also risk the deficiency of its micro and macro-nutrients, which are extremely essential for active growth and life long functioning of the body.

Kids who don’t eat well in early years end up having problems with digestion, weaker bones, delayed growth, weak vision, dull skin and hair. In the long run, these early concerns mature and take the form of osteoporosis, diabetes, depression, grey hair, baldness, early aging, obesity etc. Hence it’s utmost important to teach kids to consume a variety of fruits, vegetables, nuts and other natural foods. The next big achievement of course will be when kids not only love to eat them but also demand and notice format of food.

It is observed that it’s not the food that makes a child fussy but they notice format of food. If a child is given food in his/her favorite format in their early years, then they learn to eventually pick up and enjoy those vegetables, fruits and nuts without much fuss.

Format 1- Fries:

Replace tomato ketchup with nut spread or chutney (as ketchup sugar counters calcium absorption in the body). Stuff the wrap with cheese, tofu and sesame seeds and fold it in a convenient easy to hold format. kids will surly love and notice format of this wrap.

What is Organic foods and its benefits Over Non-Organic Food

Organic foods is known to be less harmful for the environment because of no chemical use. It’s a clean source of food and kinder to animals. What is still debatable is- Is organic food better than conventional food for health?

WHATSAPP for concerns like Speech Delay, Low Weight, Frequent Illness, Hyperactivity, Low Concentration, Weak Eyesight, Improper Sleep, Pigmentation, Pores, Face Marks, Fine Lines , Lactation etc.

There have been multiple studies indicating that Organic food is safer to consume. Results indicate that the pesticide and antibiotic levels in organic foods are definitely less compared to conventional foods. Also, animals are not injected with hormones for a quicker or larger output (for milk or eggs) resulting in safer animal produce.

So while some may debate that the level of pesticides in conventional food produce is under the alarming levels (as defined by the govt.), but accumulation of these pesticides over time in our body (and soil) will result in harmful outcomes.

Organic comes at a High price. So to suit your budget or if in doubt, begin with organic buying of ‘dirty few’. The most common purchases of this season being- tomato, potato, spinach, fenugreek, mustard and other greens, coriander, apple, pear, berries, grapes and milk.

Be an aware buyer. Know your source. Read and understand labels. Go seasonal.

    • One of the ingredients of these eggs is organic, not the whole produce. Hens were not necessarily fed organic feed.

Most importantly, Organic or not, eat whole grains, pulses, beans, fruits, veggies and nuts to meet your daily nutritional requirement.

How to read organic foods labels?

    1.FSSAI
    1. Just like green & red dots on products to signify if they are vegetarian or non-vegetarian, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) in December 2017, introduced the Jaivik Bharat logo to help customers identify authentic organic food. The consumer should look for Food Safety and Standard Authority of India’s unified organic food product logo – Jaivik Bharat and FSSAI Logo License number
2.National Program for Organic Production (NPOP) System:
    • In case of single ingredient product where all requirements been met as per the specified standards can be labelled as ‘Organic’.
    • In case of multi ingredient product where min. 95% of ingredients are of certified origin, can be labelled as ‘Certified Organic’.

Besides logo it would also have Name and logo of the Accredited Certification Body & Accreditation Number

    3. PGS-India Certified Organic Food Products

Under Participatory Guarantee System (PGS) -India system:

    • In case of single ingredient product where all requirements have been met, may be labelled as ‘PGS- Organic’.
    • In case of multi ingredient product where min. 95% of ingredients are organic, it may be labelled as ‘PGS- Organic’.

Both the programmes (NPOP and PGS-India) are independent of each other and products certified under one system cannot be processed or labeled under another system. While NPOP certified products can be traded in export and in domestic market including imports, PGS-India certified products can be traded only in domestic market. This certification is in addition to the Jaivik Bharat certification.

    4. The FSSAI in collaboration with APEDA (AGRICULTURAL & PROCESSED FOOD PRODUCTS EXPORT DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY) and PGS-India has also built a web-portal to consolidate all the information in form of “Indian Organic Integrity Data Base”. This helps consumers verify the authenticity of organic food, consumers can access information about the producer, the certification system and the availability of certified organic products

Having Jaivik bharat distinguishes organic food from non-organic food, however, you may not see all the organic food in the market have Jaivik license.

Some organic food sellers may not have a Jaivik Bharat authentication but they can be authentic organic food.

FSSAI has permitted small organic producers, having an annual turnover of over Rs 12 lakh, to sell their produce directly to end consumers without certification (Jaivik Bharat Logo) till April 2020. A similar relaxation has been given to ‘aggregators’ having an annual turnover of Rs 50 lakh.

So, while you may find genuine organic products also without the logo(s) and label. One thing is for sure that, the products with such logo would meet national organic standards

How to identify organic vegetables/fruits without labels/ licenses

Organic foods are grown without pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Hence they differ in size, shapes and often times their taste than the non-organic foods. Here’s how to identify organic foods and its benefits,

1.Size: 100% organic foods are smaller in size than the usual looking size.

    2. Look: Organic foods are un-attractive. They are less-glazy and less fuller than the non-organic ones. In short, they not perfect looking.

    3. Shape: Most organic grown foods are dis-figured. No two organic tomatoes will be of exactly same shape.

    4. Insects: Seeing specks of insect bites on a fruit/ vegetable is a sign that it is organic. Pests/insects do not flock on pesticide-sprayed and fertilizer- induced plants

    5. Seeds: Organic fruits will have more number of seeds than non-organic ones

    6. Smell/Taste: Organic fruits and vegetables have a stronger smell. Fruits will smell more fruity and less sugary. Non-organic fruits will have more than normal amount of fructose and sugar

    7. Shelf-life: If you open your refrigerator and see some fruits/vegetables getting expired faster than usual, it means that fruits/ vegetables were organic. They have shorter shelf lives

    8. Cooking time: Organic food cook faster than non-organic ones
