What causes pimples: Types, triggers, remedies & foods.

causes pimples

We have all been in a position where along with something important, be it a date, an occasion or an important meeting, a breakout pops up too! Acne has always been an uninvited guest and the most asked question is how to get rid of acne? Acne is the most common skin condition around the globe. Your skin has tiny pores or hair follicles and when these pores become clogged with sebum (skin’s natural oil), dead skin, bacteria and dirt the formation of pimples takes place. Apart from this, there are many reasons that causes pimples.

And if your skin is frequently affected by this condition then it results in the formation of acne. It appears especially on the face, forehead, neck, upper arms, shoulders, back and chest because those areas have the most sebaceous glands.

Acne normally occurs at the puberty age as the sebaceous glands activate but nowadays adult acne also seems to be prominent. (How to treat your kids acne?) There can be many reasons behind this sudden change including unhealthy diet- junk foods, deep fried eatables, heavy make-up (which clogs the pores of the skin), hormonal imbalance (which enables production of excess sebum), release of stress hormones, bacterial infection and inflammation. (Foods to manage hormone imbalance)

Types of acne:

Acne pimples differ in size, colour, area and level of pain. These are few possible types of acne that are seen –

Whiteheads: These are small, stay under the skin and produce white bumps.

Blackheads: These reach the surface of the skin and open up and are clearly visible. These turn black when exposed to air.

Papules: Very Small, usually pink bumps, tender and appear on the skin.

Pustules: Clearly noticeable on the surface of the skin. They are red at their base and are topped with white or yellow pus.

Nodules: Prominently noticeable. They are large, solid, painful pimples that are embedded deep in the skin.

Cysts: Very large, visible, painful and filled with pus. Cysts can cause scars.

Factors that causes pimples:

Factors responsible for the cause of acne are –

  • Excess oil (sebum) production
  • Hair follicles clogged by oil and dead skin cells
  • Bacteria
  • Inflammation.
What triggers acne?

There are certain things that are said to trigger or worsen acne. It maybe your lifestyle or the genetics that causes pimples to grow.

Diet: Your skin reflects what you eat. Certain foods including refined carbohydrates, high calorie food, fats and junk food affects the skin. Uneven eating habits can also trigger acne.

Hormonal changes. Androgens, a hormone which rises in the puberty stage, cause the sebaceous gland to enlarge and produce more sebum. Also, the hormonal changes during pregnancy and menstruation cause the breakouts. The midlife hormonal changes due to the living pattern also causes pimples in the adults. (How can foods help in menstruation issues?)

Genetics: The genetics also trigger the acne. If the parents or ancestors had an issue of acne, the proceeding will face that.

Medications: Certain medications can trigger acne. Usually, the drugs contain steroids effects. Other than this, any reaction to the drug also induces this.

Stress: Stress can be a cause of pimple but if you already have acne, stress may make it worse.

Cosmetic products: Cosmetic products can cause pimple. Some greasy or oily cosmetic products trigger acne.

Friction: Friction or pressure on the skin where the pimple is already there can make it worse or even inflammation can occur.

Remedies for acne:

Here are a few remedies mentioned below. Make sure you try a patch test to check the suitability of the ingredients.

Diet:

Improper diet causes pimples. It’s the simplest remedy. Just take care of what you eat! Consuming healthy food which is rich in vitamin A, vitamin E and minerals like zinc, iron can help to prevent acne. Also, make sure your eating pattern is not uneven, Moreover, try to cut off high glycemic index foods. Go for dark green leafy vegetables and fresh fruits. Drink plenty of water. (How to absorb vitamin A from food?)

Spot with Essential Oil:

Spotting with Tea tree oil is an effective remedy against acne. Tea tree oil has the ability to fight bacteria and reduce inflammation. Any essential oil MUST be diluted with carrier oil before use. Combine 1-2 drops of tea tree oil with the carrier oil. Dip the swab of cotton and apply on the affected area. Repeat this 1-2 times a day for better results. If needed, apply moisturizer. Other essential oils like lavender, rose, clove, cinnamon can also be used.

Green Tea:

Green tea contains polyphenols, flavonoids and tannins that fights against inflammation. It also has antioxidant properties. Steep green tea leaves in Boiling water for a few minutes. Once cooled, apply it on the face with a cotton swab or spray it through a bottle. Leave it overnight and later rinse it with water. (Why do we need antioxidants?)

Aloe Vera:

Aloe Vera fights bacteria and promotes wound healing too. It helps soothe the acne too. Scrap the gel and apply it to your face. Massage gently. Keep it for 30 mins and rinse normally. (How can Aloe Vera help to treat pigmentation?)

Apple cider vinegar:

It contains organic acid that has effects on inhibiting the bacteria on the skin. Mix 1 part apple cider vinegar and 3 parts waters (use more water for sensitive skin). Apply with a cotton swab on the affected area. Rest it for 30 secs and rinse it. Repeat once or twice a day.

Honey and cinnamon mask:

Honey and cinnamon have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Mix honey and cinnamon (2:1) and form a paste. After cleansing the face, apply for 5-10 minutes and rinse off. Pat dry.

Prevention and management tips can help to get rid of acne

Here are few prevention and management tips for acne prone skin:

  • Wash your face no more than twice each day
  • Avoid popping pimples
  • Refrain from touching the face
  • Clean spectacles regularly as they collect sebum and skin residue.
  • Choose makeup for sensitive skin and avoid oil-based products.
  • Remove makeup before sleeping
  • Keep hair clean
  • Avoid excessive sun exposure
  • Avoid anxiety and stress
  • Apply topical treatments
  • Cut back on foods linked to acne
  • Wear sunscreen when going outdoors
  • Avoid skincare products that contain oil
  • Keep facial care products clean
Foods to get rid of acne

Studies suggest that following a healthy diet can help to cure acne in children as well as in adults. Foods rich in complex carbohydrates, zinc, vitamin A and E, omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants are effective in reducing pimples on children’s face.

Complex Carbohydrates:

Having whole grains and less of processed food and flours reduces risk of developing acne in children. A quick look at the food label GI index can reduce chances of getting pimples on children’s faces. High GI index indicates the food is processed and causes pimples. Rich sources of complex carbs are whole grains, legumes and whole fruits and vegetables. (Importance of nutritional diet)

Zinc:

Studies support the fact that eating foods rich in zinc may be useful in preventing and treating acne by decreasing the production of oil in the skin. Researchers believe that zinc shields the body cells from any external bacterial or viral attack on them. It is easy to include zinc as a part of a varied diet. Dairy products, nuts, pumpkin seeds, lentils are good sources of zinc. (Health benefits of pumpkin seeds)

Vitamin A:

Vitamin A acts as antioxidant and fights free radicals. This helps to slow down cell ageing and keeps skin looking younger. Vitamin A plays an important role in helping new cells grow and stay healthy by healing acne and scars. Foods rich in vitamin A which can help in preventing acne in children are yellow/ orange pigment plants such as carrots, sweet potatoes and green pigment plant food like spinach, broccoli. (Foods that can help to overcome vitamin A deficiency)

Vitamin E:

This is also used as an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. As vitamin E oil is a fat soluble vitamin, it allows for quick absorption into skin sebum to heal pimples on children’s faces and also reduce scars. It also helps the skin to lock moisture and promotes the production of collagen which strengthens the skin and may help with skin elasticity and hydration. All nuts and seeds, especially walnuts and sunflower seeds, corn, olives, avocado, soybean, fortified cereals are considered as foods high in vitamin E. (How to get smooth glowing skin?)

Omega-3 fatty acids:

They can regulate the skin oil production and improve balanced hydration. A diet rich in omega-3 may help to prevent or reduce the causes of pimples. It reduces inflammation on the skin too, which research states, may positively result in reduction of acne in children. Flax seed, chia seeds, walnuts, soybeans and fish like salmon, tuna, sardines are rich sources of this fat. (Benefits of omega 3 fatty acids)

Face Mask for acne:

Here’s a simple natural ingredient mask that helps.

Ingredients:

  • Aloe Vera
  • Tea tree oil
  • Turmeric
  • Honey

How to use: Mix all the ingredients in a bowl properly. Apply on the affected area for 10-15 minutes. Rinse with water. Pat dry.

Reason for hair fall after childbirth: Postpartum changes

reason for hair fall

The social media and the many parenting groups are flooding with questions like- Is postpartum hair loss normal? or What can be the reason for hair fall after child birth? or What are the reason for hair fall ?Don’t panic, new moms! Every mother looks forward to finally meeting their little one but there’s one thing that she may not look forward to is the shedding of thick and shiny hair. Postpartum hair loss is absolutely normal and not a true hair loss.

The postpartum hair loss, also known as “Postpartum Shedding” refers to the excessive temporary hair loss after pregnancy. In medical terms it is referred to as “Telogen Effluvium” or “Postpartum Alopecia”. Many new moms observe a noticeable rate of hair loss at peak after pregnancy in the first two to six months. The loss of hair might not be due to the stress of having a new-born. This effect of pregnancy after child birth is a result of the hormonal changes in the body, being precise the falling of the estrogenic levels.

Some women may experience this condition in one pregnancy but not in another or some may not even experience it. As said, it’s a temporary hair loss, by the child’s first birthday, most of the mother’s get back to their normal hair growth. If the reason for hair fall is unknown and the hair fall persists even after a year, then something else may be causing your hair to fall out.

WHATSAPP for concerns like Speech Delay, Low Weight, Frequent Illness, Hyperactivity, Low Concentration, Weak Eyesight, Improper Sleep, Pigmentation, Pores, Face Marks, Fine Lines , Lactation etc.

What causes postpartum hair loss?

The primary and the biggest reason for hair fall after child birth is hormonal changes. The drastic hormonal changes during and after the pregnancy is responsible for shedding of your voluminous, healthy, long and vibrant hair.  During pregnancy, it is more likely that you take vitamin supplements, the blood volume increases, the hormones such as estrogens, progestogens, gonadotropin, oxytocin and prolactin increases. This helps in overall development of the body and also your hair to a greater extent. The hiked estrogen levels in the body signals the follicles to enter the growing stage of the hair cycle.

But immediately after childbirth, these hormone levels drop and return to their pre- pregnancy levels. Estrogen and progesterone are majorly responsible for the postpartum hair loss as they prompt the hair follicles to enter the resting phase of the hair cycle. In the resting phase, fewer hairs grow and after about 100 days there they begin to shed.

Additionally, postpartum stress, period, lack of sleep and demand for caring for the new-born also hampers hair growth. Lack of nutrition or proper intake of food can also be one of the reason for hair fall.

How long does postpartum hair loss last?

The postpartum hair loss is not permanent. Basically, the experience of postpartum hair loss varies among women. If a woman has grown a good amount of hair in her pregnancy or has quite long length hair, the hair loss is usually seen more in this condition.

Most of the new moms start experiencing this symptom of excessive hair fall somewhere round the 4th month. This postpartum hair loss continues for several months to a year after the childbirth, but the hair growth patterns typically come back on track after 6 months as the hormone levels start jumping back to their original levels.

But even after a year, if the hair loss still continues and is not slowing down then there can be chances of other health issues coming into play. Consulting the doctor for the same is advisable.

How to prevent postpartum hair loss?

Complete prevention of postpartum hair loss is quite skeptical but you can try to mitigate the losses. Many reasons of hair fall can fall out by –

Maintaining a balanced diet:

The body’s demand for energy after childbirth increases. Nutritional imbalance in the body shuttles energy to the major organs like brain, lungs, liver and heart keeping away from the secondary functions such as hair growth. In order to avoid this, a healthy diet including plenty of protein and iron, fruits, dark leafy vegetables, potatoes, carrots, nuts and seeds is essential. (Easy ways to get balanced diet)

Maintaining hair health:

When the follicles are in the resting phase of the hair cycle, they tend to dislodge easily. Therefore, taking care of your hair is advisable. Go for the shampoos and conditioners those are gentle cleansers and add volume to your hair. Some enriched shampoos with keratin and baobab can also help. Avoid rough brushing and drying of the hair. Make sure you don’t style your hair in a way that the follicles are stretched. A good styled hair cut works here.

Change your lifestyle:

Stress causes depression in postpartum period. Avoid stressing! Cortisol, a stress hormone, can have an undesirable effect on the hair cycle. A good, but gentle exercise practice such as yoga, meditation can help to reduce the stress levels.

Nutritional Support:

Obviously, a nutritional supplement should never be a substitute for a diet, especially when you are a mother. These supplements such as iron, calcium, vitamin B, vitamin C must be prescribed by your doctor for your overall health. This will help your body to get the adequate amount of nutrients along with the diet and will help to minimize the postpartum hair losses. (Nutrition for kids)

Remedies for postpartum hair loss-

Although, every remedy mentioned on the internet might not work for you. Therefore, it is recommended to try any remedy on a smaller patch to check its suitability on your scalp or skin.

Oil massage:

The benefits of hair massage for postpartum hair loss is amazing. It increases blood circulation, reduces hair fall and promotes hair growth. Moreover, it keeps you relaxed. Massage gently with lukewarm oil. Coconut oil is best suited but some medicated oil such as rosemary oil, arnica oil may be beneficial.

Fenugreek:

Fenugreek do wonders to your hair. It helps in reducing the hair fall and also keeping your hair healthy, soft, and clean. Soak the fenugreek seeds in water overnight. Strain and apply the fenugreek water to your scalp. Let it rest for 1-2 hours and wash with shampoo. You can also make a paste, apply for about 30 mins and wash off. Repeat this procedure twice a week for better results.

Amla:

For centuries, amla has been used as a cure for many hair issues. Amla, a rich source of vitamin C, can be used either in your diet or as an external application. Heat coconut oil with amla powder until it turns brownish-black. Once it is cooled, apply to your roots. Rest it for 2 hours and wash with shampoo. If this feels too sticky for you, then try mixing amla juice with lemon juice and apply it on your scalp. Massage it gently and leave it for about 2 hours. Wash off clean.

Bhringraj:

Bhringraj is commonly known for its benefits on hair and for hair fall control. Make a paste of fresh Bhringraj leaves and apply it on the scalp. Leave it for 45 mins and then wash as usual. If you don’t have fresh leaves, then try the tablets or powders available in the market.

Foods that can help

Following childbirth, an adequate intake of vital nutrients is of great importance. It will support the body to build up the energy required and keep the body and hair nourished.

Protein rich foods:

Hair is made up of 95% protein. Absorbable proteins must be a part of diet. Some good sources of proteins include legumes, soy, lentils, eggs, fish, beans and dairy products. (Top nuts and seeds for protein)

Vitamin B rich foods:

Biotin, a vitamin associated with hair growth is an essential one to be consumed. Natural sources of vitamin B include dark green leafy vegetables, almonds, eggs, milk, cheese, yoghurt, Salmon and legumes. (What are the reasons of hair fall in kids?)

Iron rich foods:

Iron is essential whether it be pre-pregnancy or post. Anemia is of the major reasons of hair fall. Iron helps in carrying oxygen to your cell. And as hair follicles are nourished by blood supply it is important to have iron rich foods. Good natural sources of iron include spinach, legumes, nuts and seeds, quinoa, dates, beetroot, broccoli, dark chocolate, fishes, ragi. (How foods can help to overcome iron deficiency?)

Vitamin E rich foods:

The antioxidant properties of vitamin E have been hailed for its skin and hair benefits. It helps in reducing hair fall to some extent. Also, vitamin E improves overall scalp, hair health and adds shine to the hair. This vitamin is easily found in nuts, sunflower seeds, soya oil, wheat germ, green leafy vegetables, olive oil, sunflower oil, avocado and kiwi.

Vitamin D rich foods:

Vitamin D stimulates the new and old hair follicles. Low levels of which can cause hair loss. Some foods rich in this vitamin include fishes, mushrooms, ghee, certain cereals, milk and egg yolk. (Why calcium and vitamin D are important?)

Vitamin C rich foods:

One of the roles of vitamin C in the body is to create a protein collagen which is an important part of hair structure. Moreover, it assists the absorption of iron. Vitamin C is abundantly found in citrus fruits, strawberries, raspberries, peppers, broccoli and kale. (Which food is power house of vitamin C?)

Zinc rich food:

The deficiency of zinc is one of the reason for hair fall. This is because zinc has its major part of play in hair growth and hair repair. Food high in zinc comprises pumpkin seeds, whole grains, milk products, poultry, beans, nuts, dark chocolate. (Food that can help to get best skin and hairs)

Banana and coconut oil hair mask-

These ingredients all together treat the hair follicles that are damaged.

Ingredients:

  • 1-2 ripe bananas
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil
  • 1/2 tablespoon honey

How to make: In a bowl, mash the banana properly and make a paste. Alternatively, blender can be used. To it add coconut oil and honey. Blend until the texture and the consistency is even.

How to apply: Detangle your hair and make sections. Apply this mixture properly on the scalp and focus on the root. Massage gently. Leave the mask for about 20 mins. Wash with warm water.

Who doesn’t love their skin? We all love our skin and do care for that. It’s a universal desire to have flawless skin. Yet, sometimes we find ourselves at a stage where we struggle to meet our skin expectations. Hyper pigmentation, undoubtedly is the most common skin issue that is faced across the world especially, in most of the women in their 30s. Hyper pigmentation isn’t necessarily a condition but the change in the colour of the skin which is usually harmless.

The colour differences of the skin in humans are mainly due to the natural pigment granules present and the amount of the melanin produced. Melanin is pigment which is made by the cells in the skin which provides coloration to the skin and is responsible for the hyper pigmentation too. The light and the dark skin complexion depend on the amount of the melanin produced in your body. Moreover, it protects the human skin from the UV light radiation.

Types of Pigmentation:

The common skin pigmentation types are mainly divided into 4 depending on the cause.

Melasma:

This is ubiquitous among women. It is also called the “Mask of Pregnancy”. This type of pigmentation occurs deeper in the skin dermis. The probable causes include hormonal changes which may develop during pregnancy. This can become worse when there is a high amount of sun exposure, stress or medication. These pigments are large brown patches (darker skin) and tend to appear mostly on the stomach, forehead and face. These patches have indistinct borders which can be a way of identification of this type.

Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH):

PIH is a type of pigmentation that occurs as a response to any skin injury, inflammation, acne, eczema, burns, frictions or some clinical treatments. Darkened skin or patches or maybe even spots show out as a result of this. This remedy is usually treated with tropical products. PIH can be improved with time although it can recur. They appear most of the time on the face and neck.

Sunspots:

Sunspots are also known as Solar Lentigines or Age spots. This occurs when the skin is exposed to sun in excess over the period. Sunspots are more of an age defined pigmentation which appears on hands, face or the areas overexposed UV. The spots, here, vary from light brown to black as the degree of the colour depends on how much these melanin pigments are exposed to UV light. If seen on a larger scale, these pigmentations must be monitored as there are probable chances for that to develop into melanoma or skin cancer.

Freckles:

The most prevalent type of pigmentation is Freckles. This occurs commonly with people having fair complexions. These are the tiny little dots that appear on your face due to the repeated exposure to sunlight. Freckles, to some extent, are influenced by heredity. They are more prominent in the summer and become light during the colder weather.

Causes of hyper Pigmentation:

As discussed earlier, the basic and the most common cause of skin pigmentation is the excess production of Melanin pigment. In addition, certain medications, pregnancy, hormonal changes can also result in pigmentation. The areas affected by skin pigmentation majorly include face, neck, hands, knees and elbows. There can be the various causes for the occurrence of skin pigmentation of which few are listed below –

  • Excess sun exposure
  • Medication
  • High production of melanin
  • Allergies
  • Heredity of skin pigmentation
  • Inflammatory Diseases
  • Aging
  • Pregnancy or hormonal causes
  • Chemical or physical injury
  • Frequent exposure to some cosmetic product

Remedies for Pigmentation:

Pigmentation on skin causes loss of confidence in many of them. So, apart from the cosmetic procedures and creams for the treatment of hyper pigmentation, there are numerous ways in which you can lighten the skin pigmentation at home using natural remedies. Few of the remedies are anecdotal, but research suggests that the actives present in the ingredients work on hyper pigmentation. If a person wishes to try any home remedy, first they should always try it on a small patch of the skin to know the suitability. Mentioning, some of the remedies for pigmentation below-

The remedy can be used as – Mix equal parts of apple cider vinegar and water and apply it to the pigmented area. Keep it for 3-5 mins and rinse with lukewarm water. Avoid contact with the eyes and use higher concentrations.
