about coconut oil benefits

Coconut oil is widely considered as a “True Superfood”. This is because there aren’t a lot of things that coconut oil can’t do. While talking about coconut oil benefits, it can be considered as “Do it all miracle oil”.

Coconut oil is derived from the lifeline of the health tree i.e., coconut tree. It is well known for its taste, health and other versatile benefits that you may not be even aware of. Over decades, coconut oil has gained its fame as a healthiest food for skin, hair and body and the benefits are beyond your expectations.

Let’s get aware of what all this hype is about with the science-backed health benefits of coconut oil for skin, hair, body, oral health and others.

Composition of coconut oil:

Coconut oil is rich in Medium Chain Fatty acids (MCT). These MCTs are easier to burn and harder for the body to convert into fats. It is a rich source of Vitamin E and almost 100% fat.

Fatty acids found in coconut oil include –

Saturated fatty acids: Lauric acid, Myristic acid, Palmitic acids, Caprylic acid, Stearic acid, Capric acid.

Unsaturated fatty acids: Oleic acid, Linoleic acid

Types of coconut oil:

Broadly speaking, Coconut oil is classified into two: refined coconut oil and virgin coconut oil.

Refined coconut oil is produced through heat exposure. It is refined, bleached, deodorized and made from dried coconut. Moreover, it is less expensive, has a neutral scent and higher smoke point. Usually recommended for cooking and have fewer nutritional properties.

Virgin coconut oil is a pure form of oil and is produced without heat exposure. It is made from cold pressing and is unbleached. Moreover, it retains all the natural aroma and has a lower smoke point. It tastes great and has numerous health and nutritional benefits. It is recommended to consume this raw like a dressing.

Cold pressed coconut oil is extremely pure and raw. It has a higher smoke point and is considered better for high temperature cooking. This is usually priced higher since the extraction process retains all the nutrients.

Benefits of coconut oil for skin:

Apart from cooking, coconut oil has some outstanding benefits for skin too. It shines in the beauty product sector too. Read below to explore more about coconut oil benefits for skin.

(How to apply sunscreen)

If applied before, it reduces the amount of damage during washing whereas application of the same after bath prevents damage caused by friction and styling. Moreover, it keeps your hair soft and smooth. (Hair fall home remedies)

Makes your hair shine:

Coconut oil helps in hair shine as it penetrates the scalp much better than other mineral oils. It protects the hair and locks the moisture thus, providing shine to the hair strands. This is the secret of long and shiny hairs.

Protects your hair:

Coconut oil contains essential properties that are important for revamping damaged hair. The nutrient in the oil nourishes the scalp thus protecting it from damage. Its chemical structure is so superior that it helps in protecting the hair from the environmental and cosmetic damages.

Aids hair growth:

Longer, thicker and shinier hair can be obtained from coconut oil. In addition, coconut oil helps in aiding hair growth by reducing breakage, moisturizing the hair, reducing protein loss and protection against environmental damage. It also promotes hair growth by removing excess sebum from the hair follicles. For this to work best, you need to make it a regular beauty regimen. (Reasons of hair fall in kids and remedies)

Prevents lice:

The initial step of lice prevention can be usage of coconut oil. Massaging coconut oil along with tea tree oil kills the lice. Alternatively, you can use apple cider vinegar to wash off the lice eggs after the coconut oil treatment.

Studies state that application of coconut oil protects the hair from the sun’s harmful radiations. It may work as a weak sunscreen.

Treats dandruff:

Coconut oil has antibacterial and antifungal properties. That is why frequent massage of warm coconut oil reduces dandruff. (Home remedies for dry and itchy scalp)

The reason behind doing this is, every time you oil pull, the fatty acids present in the oil traps the bacteria and removes them from the mouth. Isn’t it an interesting fact about coconut oil benefits?

Coconut oil drinking benefits: Body care
Boost heart health:

Coconut oil may help in boosting heart health. It contains saturated fatty acids but these work differently as compared to the other saturated fats. It increases the healthy cholesterol (HDL, good fat) in the body while lowering the harmful effects of LDL. Additionally, the MCTs present in this oil are not involved in the cholesterol transport. On the whole, it may help boost heart health.

Quick source of energy:

MCTs present in the coconut oil are easily digested and go directly from your gut to the liver. The body uses them as a quick energy source without increasing the blood sugar levels. (Power foods all kids need)

Helps in fat burning:

Coconut oil helps in the proper functioning of the thyroid and endocrine system. It boosts the body’s metabolic rates which aids weight loss. The major fats from coconut oil are converted into energy rather than being stored as a fat. (Natural ways for weight loss)

Reduce hunger:

Studies shows that coconut oil is responsible for satiety. It reduces hunger by producing ketones in the body. This aids to weight loss also as the intake of the calories reduces. (Tips to increase appetite in kids)

Improve Cognitive (Brain) Functions:

One of the lesser-known facts about coconut oil benefits is its role in improving brain function. The MCTs present in this oil break down into super rich ketones which act as an alternative energy source (fuel) for the brain. This helps in boosting memory. Moreover, it has been studied that it enhances the abilities of language and orientation in Alzheimer patients. (Foods for brain development in kids)

Controls blood sugar:

Recent work on the impact of coconut oil on the blood sugar level states that it helps in promoting insulin secretion. In addition to that, it helps in stabilizing the blood sugar levels and  encourages effective use of blood glucose.

Boost Bone Health:

Coconut oil helps boost bone health in two ways. Firstly, being a rich source of antioxidants, it neutralizes the free radicals and reduces oxidative stress. Secondly, it helps in the absorption of calcium, magnesium and other fat-soluble vitamins and minerals. In addition, it is useful in reducing the symptoms of osteoporosis and arthritis. (Bone development in kids)

Reduce stress:

The combination of two properties of the virgin coconut oil helps in relaxing the body. This oil can be used in aromatherapy which helps in body and mind relaxation. Gentle massage of coconut oil eases the stress.

Balance hormones:

Hormonal imbalance is quite a matter of concern these days. Coconut oil is rich in lauric acid. It helps in balancing the hormones and may have a good effect on the estrogen levels. It is good to consume this during menopause. (Foods to manage hormone imbalance)

Everything is okay, but how much coconut oil per day?

Even though coconut oil serves abundant health benefits, moderate use of it is required.  It should be treated like any other fat that you come across. You can enjoy all the benefits of coconut when consumed in adequate amounts.

Usually, it is best to limit yourself to about 2 tablespoons of coconut oil in a day.

Health benefits of coconut water:

Not only coconut oil but also coconut water plays an important role in the body.

  • Good source of hydration

Tips for skin care: How to apply sunscreen?

how apply sunscreen

You scream, I scream, Sunscreen! There is a lot of misinformation and misunderstanding about how to apply sunscreen. Usually, only the bright sunshine reminds us of the importance of sunscreen but NO! Your skin needs to be protected even when there’s no sun! Check what science really has to say about sunscreen.

Sunscreens are made to protect our skin from the harmful UV rays of the sun. Moreover, they help in preventing tans, sunburn, wrinkles, leathery skin and reduce the risk of skin cancer too when used properly and in adequate amounts. But, if you’re wearing sunscreen, that doesn’t mean you can stay longer in the heated sun as much as you can.

Here’s a lot more for you to decide whether sunscreen is a friend or foe to your skin.

Types of sunscreen:

There are basically two types of sunscreens. Each of them protects the skin in a different way.

Chemical sunscreen:

This type of sunscreen usually contains active ingredients such as octinoxate, oxybenzone, octisalate, avobenzone, octocrylene or homosalate. It works like a sponge. They help in protecting the skin by absorbing the sun’s UV rays before it penetrates the skin. This sunscreen is easier to rub and blends well.

Physical sunscreen:

This is also called Mineral sunscreen. It typically contains zinc oxide, titanium oxides or both as an active which works like a shield. It helps by reflecting the UV rays away from the skin. This sunscreen works best for sensitive skin.

Both sunscreen works well for the skin. Normally, a combination is used. While buying a sunscreen 2 things must be kept in the mind – SPF and broad-spectrum protection (protects against UVA and UVB). Water resistance is another factor to be considered.

What is SPF?

The full form of SPF is a Sun Protection Factor. It is used to measure how much or how well the sunscreen protects the skin against UVB rays. In simple terms, it measures how long it takes for the sun to burn (redden) the skin with and without sunscreen application.

What SPF should I use?

The SPF and its protection are directly proportional i.e., higher the SPF number, higher the protection. 15 SPF (block around 93% UVB rays) is the least that you should use whereas SPF 30 (blocks 97%) works best of all.

Why is daily application of sunscreen recommended?

Application of sunscreen should be a daily and a year-round habit that everyone should build. Here are few reasons to do so –

  • Protects the skin from UV rays
  • Lowers risk of skin cancer
  • Prevents premature Aging
  • Maintains even skin tone
  • Protect against sunburn
  • Avoid blotchy skin
  • Avoids hyperpigmentation
  • Stop DNA damage
When should I apply sunscreen and how much?

Always remember, apart from sun damaging your skin, sand, water, stone and snow also reflect the sunrays and harms your skin. Make sure to apply sunscreen when around these surroundings. The sun’s radiations are strongest between 10am – 4pm. Avoid excessive or prolonged exposure.

The answer to how much to and how to apply sunscreen is- sunscreen must be applies 30 minutes prior to sun exposure so that it can be absorbed by the body completely and less likely to wash off when you perspire. Generally speaking, 30 grams of sunscreen is required to cover your entire body! REAPPLICATION OF SUNSCREEN AFTER EVERY 2 HOURS IS A MUST.

Every part of the body which is not covered is eligible for sunscreen application. Face, neck, arms, ears, lips, legs and areas hard to reach like the back should be focused.

Indoor:

Even if you are staying indoors and don’t feel the need to apply sunscreen, you still have to apply sunscreen. This is because UV light can penetrate your skin through the openings and windows. It’s like you’re receiving the similar UV rays as you would if you were outside.

On cloudy days:

Sun is hidden on cloudy days. But, studies state that even though it’s hidden, around 80% of the UV radiation reaches earth. Unfortunately, it results in skin damage. So next time don’t forget to apply sunscreen on cloudy days too.

High altitudes:

Higher altitudes increase the risk of sun damage. Applying sunscreen reduces this impact and protects the skin. Snow reflects 80% of the rays. So next time you go skiing, don’t forget to apply your sun gear!

Winters:

Application of sunscreen during summers is a must and explainable, but why winters? This is because during winters, the ozone layers thin out. This means we have less defence against UV rays.  Therefore, it is important to apply sunscreen even to the easy to forget areas.

Light clothing:

Clothing definitely acts as a protective gear from the sunrays. But, not all. Light weight and coloured fabrics and garments are more likely to be hit by sun and allow light. Alternatively, dark or dense coloured clothes provide good defence. Application of sunscreen while wearing light clothing is important.

Swimming and other high perspiration activities:

Swimming and activities like heavy exercise, running, jogging washes out the sunscreen. It is advisable to reapply the sunscreen after such activities for better protection.

Some tips:

Reapply sunscreen after every 2 hours

  • Choose broad spectrum sunscreen
  • Be careful around sensitive areas (eyes, nose, bruises, irritated skin)
  • Apply thoroughly
  • Shake well before use (Spray and sticks are available now)
  • Choose water resistant sunscreen
  • SPF 30 works best
  • Wear protective gears
  • Do not use sunscreen on infants or below 6 months
  • Make sure you are not allergic to the ingredients mentioned
  • If you are already using some medicated products, make sure that no interactions occur
  • Works best when applied bare skin or after serum as it protects the skin not only from UV rays but also from the makeup from going deep into skin.
Foods with UV protecting properties:

Apart from sunscreen application and wearing protective gears, here’s an extra dose of sun protection! Yes, there are few foods that help with extra UV protection. Include this in your diet for good results.

  • Berries: Blueberry, strawberry, cherries
  • Red wine (Moderate amounts)
  • Omega-3 rich and Vitamin E foods: Sunflower seeds, salmon, sardines, hemp seeds, nuts, avocado
  • Antioxidants and vitamin C rich: Green tea, pomegranate, dark chocolate, tomatoes, olive oil, watermelon
  • Beta-carotene rich: Carrots, sweet peppers, sweet potato
  • Dark green vegetables: Spinach, kale, broccoli
  • Coffee

COVID 19 vaccination of pregnant women or breastfeeding mothers

vaccination pregnant

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease that has spread rapidly throughout the world. In March 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic. Since then the pandemic has severely impacted health systems, economic and social progress throughout the world. In this article, we will learn whether vaccination of pregnant woman or breastfeeding mothers is safe or not?

COVID-19 is caused by a newly discovered coronavirus now named as the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Coronaviruses (CoV) are zoonotic, and are transmitted between animals and humans. Coronaviruses cause diseases such as the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and more mild illnesses including the common cold. (Home remedies of cold in kids)

The most common signs of infection with COVID-19 include fever, dry cough (Home remedies for cough), shortness of breath or difficulty in breathing, and tiredness or fatigue. Though most people (~80%) experience mild disease and recover without requiring hospitalization. However, globally, around 20% of people who contract COVID-19 become seriously ill and have trouble breathing. Also, in more severe cases, the infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and even lead to death. (Reference: MoHFW)

Vaccination and pregnant WOMAN:

COVID-19 infection during pregnancy may result in rapid deterioration of health of pregnant women and could also affect the foetus. Based on the recommendations from National Technical Advisory Group on Immunization (NTAGI), MoHFW has approved vaccination of pregnant women against COVID-19. But with the condition that the pregnant women may be informed about the risks of exposure to COVID-19 infection along with the risks and benefits associated with the COVID-19 vaccines available in the country.

vaccination pregnant

Moreover, A pregnant woman who opts for vaccination, could be vaccinated at any time of the pregnancy. Also, to help pregnant women make an informed decision to be vaccinated, they should be provided with information about the risks of COVID-19 infection in pregnancy, the benefits of vaccination, along with the likely side effects of vaccination. vaccination in India in pregnant women is showing a hike. (Reference: WHO) (World Health Organization)

  • Pregnancy does not increase the risk to COVID-19 infection, but current evidence indicates that pregnant women are at an increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19 compared to non-pregnant women in case they get infected.
  • Additionally, pregnant women with COVID-19 are at increased risk for preterm birth and might have an increased risk of other adverse pregnancy outcomes.
  • Most pregnant women will be asymptomatic or have mild disease, BUT their health may deteriorate rapidly and that might affect the foetal outcome.
  • It is important that they take all precautions to protect themselves from acquiring COVID-19, including taking vaccination against COVID-19.
  • WHO recommends vaccination in pregnant women when the benefits of vaccination to the pregnant woman outweigh the potential risks.
  • It is therefore advisable that a pregnant woman should take COVID-19 vaccine.
vaccination pregnant
Are there any side effects of the COVID 19 vaccines that can either harm the pregnant woman or her foetus?
  • COVID 19 vaccines available are safe and vaccination protects pregnant women against COVID 19 illness/disease like other individuals. (Immunity building foods)
  • Based on current knowledge, experts believe that COVID -19 vaccines are unlikely to pose a risk to the pregnant person or foetus.
  • Like any medicine a vaccine may have side effects which are normally mild. After getting the vaccine, she can get a mild fever, pain at the injection site, or feel unwell for 1-3 days.
  • The long-term adverse effects and safety of vaccines for foetus and child is not known yet.
  • Very rarely, (one in 1-5 lakh persons) the beneficiary may, after COVID 19 vaccination, experience some of the following symptoms within 20 days after getting the injection which may need immediate attention.
Symptoms occurring within 20 days after receiving any COVID 19 vaccine:
  • Shortness of breath (difficulty in breathing)
  • Chest Pain
  • Pain in limbs / pain on pressing the limbs or swelling in the limbs (arm or calf)
  • Small pinpoint hemorrhages (petechial) or bruising of the skin beyond the vaccination site
  • Persistent abdominal pain with or without vomiting.
  • Seizures in the absence of previous history of seizures with or without vomiting.
  • Severe and persistent headaches with or without vomiting (in the absence of previous history of migraine or chronic headache)
  • Weakness/paralysis of limbs or any particular side of the body
  • Persistent vomiting without any obvious reason
  • Blurred vision/ pain in eyes
  • Any other symptom or health condition which is of concern to the recipient or the family
Are there any specific contraindications for vaccination of PREGNANT WOMAN?

As for the general population, pregnant women should avoid vaccination in the following conditions:

  • Anaphylactic or allergic reaction to the previous dose of COVID-19 vaccine (Home remedies for allergies)
  • Anaphylaxis or allergic reaction to vaccines or injectable therapies, pharmaceutical products, food-items etc.

Vaccine is temporarily contraindicated in the following conditions:

  • Diagnosed COVID-19 infection – defer for 12 weeks from infection or 4 to 8 weeks from recovery
  • Active COVID-19 infection
  • COVID-19 infection treated with anti-COVID-19 monoclonal antibodies or convalescent plasma.

(Reference: MoHFW)

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):
If a pregnant woman has already had COVID-19, when should she be vaccinated?

In case a woman has been infected with COVID-19 infection during the current pregnancy, then she should be vaccinated soon after the delivery.

What are the benefits of VACCINE?

The COVID-19 vaccines produce protection against the disease, as a result of developing an immune response to the SARS-Cov-2 virus. In addition, developing immunity through vaccination means there is a reduced risk of developing the illness and its consequences. So, this is how immunity helps you fight the virus if exposed.

Should we eat or drink differently the day or two after getting vaccinated?

The effectiveness of the vaccine is not dependent on any food or drink before or after taking the vaccine. (Reference: WHO) (World Health Organization)

Is it safe for pregnant women, those planning to become pregnant, and breastfeeding mothers to receive COVID-19 vaccines?

In the interim, WHO recommends that for pregnant women the use of the COVID-19 vaccine depends on the basis of a benefit vs risk assessment. WHO does not recommend pregnancy testing prior to vaccination. Neither does WHO recommend delaying pregnancy or terminating pregnancy because of vaccination. Vaccination with any of the vaccine products assessed by the WHO Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization can be offered to breastfeeding women. Also, WHO does not recommend discontinuation of breastfeeding after vaccination.

Claims on social media suggested that COVID-1919 vaccine could affect female fertility. Is it true?

Rumours or social media posts suggesting that COVID-19 vaccines could cause infertility are not true and totally baseless. Such rumours were floated in the past against other vaccines also e.g. polio and measles. None of the available vaccines affects fertility. All vaccines and their constituents are tested first on animals and later in humans to assess if they have any such side effects. Vaccines are authorized for use only after their safety and efficacy is assured. (Reference: MOHFW)

Should women who are on their periods take the COVID-19 vaccine?

Women can receive a vaccine at any point in their menstrual cycle

(Reference: WHO) (World Health Organization)

What are the side effects of COVID-19 vaccines?

Like any vaccine, COVID-19 vaccines can cause mild, short term side effects. Most reactions to vaccines are mild and go away within a few days on their own.

Reported side effects to COVID-19 vaccines have mostly been mild to moderate and short-lasting. They include: fever, fatigue, headache, muscle pain, chills, diarrhoea, and pain at the injection site. The chances of any of these side effects following vaccination differ according to the specific COVID-19 vaccine. (Reference: WHO)

Generally speaking, the color of the lips varies from person to person. But if your natural lip tone turns out to be darker then some lifestyle changes are required. Your lips speak a lot about your habits, health and lifestyle.

There are various factors that affect the change in lip color. In this article, we have mentioned various potential causes of lip darkening. Moreover, now you will be able to treat these dark lips with the help of kitchen superstars. (Kitchen superstars to reduce dark circles)

Causes of dark lips:

Having dark lips is typically a harmless condition. It is nothing but excess production of melanin in that area which causes darkening also known as Hyperpigmentation. Following are the underlying causes-

How to lighten dark lips:

There are multiple ways of treating or reducing the pigmented lips. Everyone wishes for red lips. Apart from the cosmetic procedure, here are a few effective home remedies that will answer your question of how to lighten dark lips. Remember, consistency is the key!

1. Lemon and Sugar:

Lemon has skin lightening properties. It exfoliates and bleaches the skin. Sugar acts as a scrubbing agent. Honey moisturizes the skin.  Take a slice of freshly cut lemon. On it add some sugar and honey. Gently massage your lips for a few minutes. Rest it for a minute or two. Rinse with cold water. If you feel it drying out, apply honey and rinse.

2. Potato:

Potatoes have a naturally occurring compound called catecholase which is responsible for reducing darkness. Rub a slice of potato on your lips. Rest it overnight. Wash with lukewarm water.

3. Milk and turmeric:

Raw milk and turmeric are indeed a great combination to reduce dark lips. It exfoliates the skin and acts as a melanin inhibitor. Mix 1 tablespoon of milk with ½ tablespoon of turmeric. Make a paste and massage the lips. Rest for 5 minutes. Wash clean.

4. Massage with oil:

Coconut, Olive or almond oil are best for lip massaging. It helps in increasing the blood circulation. Also, it has emollient properties and helps in rejuvenating skin. Take a few drops of any of these oils and massage on the lip twice a day. You can also leave the oil overnight and wash with lukewarm water in the morning.

5. Pomegranate:

Pomegranate is a great answer to how to lighten dark lips. It helps reduce hyperpigmentation and restore the natural colour of your lips. Crush or grind pomegranate seeds. Mix raw milk. Make a paste and gently massage your lips. Leave for 5 mins rinse off with cold water. You can also mix carrot or beetroot juice for extra benefits.

6. Cucumber juice:

Cucumber soothes and rejuvenates skin. It has a good amount of vitamin C and antioxidants. Juice half of a cucumber. Refrigerate it. Once cooled, apply it on the lips and gently massage. Leave it for 30 minutes. Rinse well.

7. Rose water:

Apart from soothing and moisturizing the lips, rose water helps in healing the lip. Mix well honey and rose water. Apply this to your lips at least twice a day. Leave it for 15-20 minutes. Wash with cold water. Alternatively, you can mix rose petal paste with honey and milk.

8. Beetroot:

This remedy will give you red lips that you wished for. Apply beetroot paste to your lips. Leave for 15 mins. Rinse with cold water. Apply your choice of lip balm. Repeat twice a day. (5 reasons why you should eat Beet)

How to prevent dark lips formation:
  • Apply sunscreen
  • Quit smoking and tobacco
  • Use good quality cosmetics
  • Stay hydrated
  • Maintain your lips
  • Maintain a good balanced diet
  • Limit caffeine intake
  • Limit Alcohol intake too
  • Avoid allergens
  • Avoid lip sucking
Make your own Lip balm!

If you’re putting a lot of effort in maintaining and achieving red lips, why not try making your own lip balm? Avoid the chemical-based lip balms that do more harm than good. Here’s an easy natural way –

Things that you’ll need:

  • 3-4 tablespoon Beeswax pellets
  • 2-3 tablespoon Shea butter
  • 4 tablespoon Coconut oil (Alternatives can be almond oil, olive oil, grapeseed oil)
  • 10-15 drops Essential oil (Recommended are citrus, lemon. Lavender, peppermint)
  • ½ gram Flavor oil (Optional or alternative)

How to proceed?

1. Melt beeswax, shea butter and oil in 30 seconds increments in a microwave. Stir well after each one.

2. Add the essential oil or the flavor oil. Microwave for 15 seconds. Mix well.

3. Pour the mixture in a tube or pots of the container of your choice. Make sure to choose a container that makes it easy to apply.

4. Leave it to set. Store in a cool place.

Home remedies to remove tan: Types and concerns

home remedies to remove tan
home remedies to remove tan

Summer and vacations are fun but no one likes to return back having their skin striped like a zebra. Hanging out at the beach or an open pool feels amazing until you realize that you have got two tons of skin! Yes, skin tan it is! But, don’t you worry, there are effective home remedies to remove tan.

Tanned skin is a beauty problem faced by almost every individual including kids too. Scorching heat and the blazing sun rays make your skin appear dull and tanned. Mild exposure to sun is important in the synthesis of vitamin D but excess is harmful. It not only tans the skin but also results in dark spots, premature ageing, loses luster and hyperpigmentation.

Effects of tanning vary according to the skin types. It’s a simple science behind why tanning occurs. Let’s learn more!

WHATSAPP for concerns like Speech Delay, Low Weight, Frequent Illness, Hyperactivity, Low Concentration, Weak Eyesight, Improper Sleep, Pigmentation, Pores, Face Marks, Fine Lines , Lactation etc.

What is tanning and how does it happen?

Tanning is a natural process of the body where it protects the skin from sun damage. Sun exposure increases the production of melanin which leads to tanning or darker skin appearance. (Food for glowing skin)

The sun rays comprise 2 types of the rays i.e., UVA and UVB. UVA is responsible for the sun tan whereas UVB causes skin burn by affecting the upper layer of the skin.

UVA goes deep into the lower layers where it triggers melanocytes cells to produce melanin. The more is the exposure to the UV radiations; more melanin is produced and darker the skins appear. Even though sun tan protects the skin from UV rays, it is a sign of skin damage.

The areas that are most prone to sun tan are: Face, arms, neck, back, hands, legs and feet.

Types of skin tan:

There are different types of tans based on the skin type and reaction to the sun. According to the Fitzpatrick skin prototypes, the tans are classified as below:

Skin Color Sun Exposure reactionsTanning Levels
Pale WhiteEasily burnsDoes not tan
WhiteUsually burnsTans with difficulty
BeigeBurns moderatelyTans uniformly

How long do tans last?

Usually, the lifespan of the tan is decided based on the skin type. The frequency of skin regeneration also affects tan’s lasting time. Generally speaking, it lasts for around 8-10 days. After that the outer layer of the skin begins to shed off naturally, thus removing the tan.

How to protect sun tan:

  • Apply and reapply sunscreen after certain intervals
  • Use sunglasses and hats
  • Wear protective clothing
  • Stay hydrated
  • Seek shades if possible
  • Exfoliate your skin at regular intervals if you’re exposed to sun for a longer time

Both UVA and UVB rays may cause severe skin issues if the skin is exposed to this radiation to a greater extent. UVA goes deeper inside the skin and may damage a person’s immune system. It leads to a type of skin cancer called Melanoma. Correspondingly, UVB exposure increases the danger of causing other 2 types of skin cancer namely, basal and squamous cell carcinoma.

Exposure to UVB rays also increases your danger of getting two other types of skin cancer: basal and squamous cell carcinoma.

It is always recommended to protect your skin from these radiations.

WHATSAPP for concerns like Speech Delay, Low Weight, Frequent Illness, Hyperactivity, Low Concentration, Weak Eyesight, Improper Sleep, Pigmentation, Pores, Face Marks, Fine Lines , Lactation etc.

Why do we get dark circles?

Studies show that the skin under our eye is the thinnest and delicate when compared to the rest of the body. Under eye skin has no oil glands and subcutaneous tissue and thus is more prone to darkening. As we age, the collagen in the skin starts decreasing and the skin becomes thin. This can be considered as one of the main reasons for dark circles. Also, frequent sun exposure breaks the collagen present in the skin. When this happens the veins under the eye start to be visible and pass through much of a stretch and strain, thus promoting the dark circles. Fair skin people are more prone to these under eye dark circles.

Causes of dark circle:

The cause of dark circles varies from person to person. It can either be one single reason or the combination that causes a dark circle under the eye. Here are a few of them.

Remedy for dark circles at home:

Although you might have tried numerous home remedies for dark circles, only a few may or may not have worked for you. It depends on your skin type. Nothing happens overnight, consistency is the key and you won’t regret it. Here are few worth trying and easy remedy for dark circles at home.

Sleep:

Sleep deprivation or even poor-quality sleep makes you look pale and tired, promoting dark circles. A good sound seven to eight hours of sleep helps reduce the dark circle and also it will benefit the overall body. (How to get a sound sleep)

Hydration:

The skin around the eye is thinner and is more prone to dehydration. When you do not consume adequate amounts of water, your skin feels dull and dehydrated. This also boosts the visibility of the dark circles. Drink a sufficient amount of water during the day and more in the summer.

Exercise:

Exercise is the key when it comes to appearance. Regular workouts enhance blood circulations throughout the body. This makes you glow, reduces the darkness and gets you younger looking skin. Moreover, it releases the endorphins which elevates your mood. Workout at least 5 times a week.

Apply moisturizer and sunscreen daily:

This is a skin care routine that must not be skipped at any cost. It helps in hydration and protects you from UV sun rays. Using this on a regular basis can help reduce the dark circle.

Cold compress:

Cold compress is a method in which the blood vessels under the eye are dilated. This helps in reducing the dark circle by constricting the vessels. Just take an ice cube and wrap it with a clean cloth. Apply or massage it under the eyes for 10 minutes. Repeat this process twice a day.

Cucumber:

Cucumber are known to have high water content. It nourishes and moisturizes the skin. Also, it has skin-lightening and astringent properties which helps reduce dark circles. Take thin slices of cucumber and refrigerate it for 20 mins. Place it on the eye and leave for 10-15mins. Remove and wipe the areas with lemon juice. Make sure it does not enter your eyes. Rinse well.

Tea and coffee bags:

Tea (green, black) and coffee contain antioxidants and caffeine. These have anti-inflammatory properties. Also, it stimulates the blood circulation, shrinks blood vessels and reduces the liquid retention. And thus, helps in reducing the dark circle by soothing the capillaries under the eye area.  Soak tea bags in hot water for 5 minutes. Remover and refrigerate it for 20 mins. Place it under the eyes for 15 minutes. Rinse with water.

Rose water and cold milk:

This is a good combination when it comes to reducing dark circles.
