Cold and Flu: Are you feeding your kids right?

With every changing season, the biggest concern among parents around the globe is to prevent their kids from cold and flu and what are the foods for cold and flu season. Children start to get cold after about six months of age when the immunity they received from their mom fades and they have to build up their own immunity. Cold and flu season prevention become more important for kids less than seven years of age who have an immature immune system which makes them more susceptible to cold and flu viruses. Most of the kids have at least six to eight colds a year, which is likely to happen during fall and winter. Every time when kids get infected with a specific cold virus, their immune system develops antibodies, which help them to fight against it next time. But there are lots of different cold viruses, so it takes time to build an effective immune system.

Children catch cold, when a virus comes in contact with the lining of nose and throat. There are more than two hundred different viruses causing cold in children, but the Rhinovirus is the most common offender. The symptoms for cold include stuffy or runny nose and sneezing. However, flu symptoms are more severe than cold and include fever, headache, sore throat, congestion.

Ways to get infected by a cold and flu:

Direct contact: by getting in contact with a person infected by cold virus. As cold is contagious; they can pass on the virus. It’s usually spread when an infected person has a cold blow or touches their nose and then touches someone or something else.

Indirect contact: by touching toys, doorknobs, books and other items that have been touched by an infected person.

Through air: if an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks, the virus can spread through droplets in the air and may enter your body through nose, mouth, eyes.

Precautions are better than cure. Some foods for cold and flu season:

Turmeric: Due to its antibacterial and anti-viral properties turmeric is one of the best foods for cold and flu season, known to treat viral infections. Adding turmeric powder to a glass of warm milk can offer relief in the aching throat and runny nose.Honey: Honey contains antioxidants, anti-bacterial and anti-microbial properties which makes it best for cold and flu season prevention. It has been used traditionally for thousands of years in different Asian cultures to treat infections. (An easy honey recipe for kids)

Carrot: Beta- carotene in carrots converts into vitamin A which is key for keeping mucous membranes (inside nose and mouth) healthy. Vitamin A also benefits the immune system by preparing it to fight when a similar virus attacks next time. All these nutrients make it one of the best foods for cold and flu season. (How does Vitamin A help skin?)

Ginger: Ginger roots are used for centuries for health benefits in Asian cultures. Research shows that ginger has medicinal properties, both antiviral and antibacterial, that could help ease the symptoms of cold or sore throat so it’s good to use lots of ginger for cold and flu season prevention. (What are other Ayurvedic herbs that are good for kids?)

Egg: We all know eggs as one of the foods for cold and flu season. Eggs are packed with immunity boosting nutrients, with high amounts of vitamin D, which is vital in regulating and strengthening immunity. Vitamin D is present in every cell of the body, strengthening it and protecting it against viruses or bacteria attacking from the outside. A child who took a daily serving of vitamin D in winters were less likely to catch cold and flu as compared to those who did not.

Whole Grain: Whole grains are high prebiotic fiber which has anti-inflammatory properties and increases the production of healthy bacteria in the gut. It works as the food for the bacteria living in the gut and increasing them in quantity, ensuring healthy gut health. Simply put, with lack of fiber, bacteria living in the gut don’t survive as they don’t get their food. This causes lowered immunity. (How does this help with acne?)

Apple: This fruit contains phytochemical antioxidants which helps in boosting immunity. Apples are also full of calories which come from a good mix of carbs, vitamins and minerals which keeps your child energized to fight the infection without losing much of weight. One apple with skin has 5g of fiber which ensures healthy gut health also. (Should an apple be given every day?)

Spinach: Spinach is a super food that is great for your overall health not only it is packed with digestion regulating prebiotic fiber but it also contains vitamin C, a powerful nutrient that can help in preventing common cold and reduce symptoms of sickness. (An easy spinach recipe for kids)

Blueberries: Blueberries are filled with antioxidants that can help in treating and preventing cold and flu. It contains flavonoids, a type of antioxidants that can help reduce damage to cells and boost the immune system.

Apart from offering plenty of fluids to keep the child hydrated, foods for cold and flu season should be rich in antioxidants like Vitamin C (what is the easiest source?), Vitamin E (what are some easy sources?) and zinc, which help to fight against cold and flu. Zinc forms a protective layer on the cells of the body and shields against invading bacteria and viruses. It is popularly found in diaper rash creams or sunscreens for the same reason. There are certain foods that you should avoid including in your kids diet if he/she has cold and flu such as sugary foods and oily foods which are refined and processed as they don’t contribute any nutrition to cure the infection. Rather they can work adversely (How?). So it’s better to take cold and flu season prevention.

Cold and flu season prevention:

  • Hand wash – make your kids wash their hands on a regular basis especially when they are in contact with someone infected or sanitize their hands.
  • Teach your kids to cover their nose and mouth while sneezing or coughing.
  • Avoid sharing cups, utensils, toys and towels with others.

7 WAYS TO BOOST YOUR CHILD’S IMMUNITY

New School year is going to start soon. Most probably kids will attend it by physically going back into the classroom. In this scenario, immunity is a huge concern among parents as pandemic has not ended yet and cold and flu season also impede ahead. Many paediatricians consider four to five colds or flu per year normal in kids. But there are some healthy habits and foods to increase immunity in child naturally. It’s important to work on a kid’s immunity from the time he/she is born. Here we are discussing some possible ways of boosting and developing a strong immune system among kids from childhood.

Breastfeed: The baseline level of immune cells in the breast milk is higher for babies. We know from research that breastfeeding is an effective way to develop your baby’s defences against diseases. Breast milk contains many elements that support your baby’s immune system. These include proteins, fats, sugars and antibodies and probiotics. When a mother comes into contact with germs, she develops antibodies to help her fight off infections. So breast milk is one of the foods to increase immunity in child naturally (How else does breastmilk help the body?)This is another good reason for breastfeeding for the first six months, as recommended by the World Health Organisation.

Enough sleep: It’s important to get enough sleep for kids to be healthy and active. During sleep, the immune system releases proteins called cytokines, which fights infection and inflammation. While not getting required sleep time suppressed cytokines production. A newborn should sleep up to 18-20 hours of the day, toddlers need 13-15 hours, kids aged 7-12 should sleep 10-11 hours and teenagers 8-9 hours. (Any food that can help how kids sleep better?) Studies have shown that sleep enhances adaptive immune response to invade infectious bacteria and viruses. Long term lack of sleep also increases risk of obesity in kids.

Exercise and outdoor activities: Exercise like running, cycling, swimming, skipping, various kinds of dancing and yoga have been shown to improve immune function in children in some ways. Regular physical activity can strengthen your immune system and help your body fight against infections. Study has shown that moderate intensity exercise has a beneficial effect on a child’s immune system.

Healthy Gut: A child’s gut is home to a wide range of bacterias. Some bad bacterias can lead to infections and diseases while some are good, healthy and helpful to boost immunity in kids. More than 75% of our immune system lives in the gut. It’s almost clear now that a healthy immune system starts with healthy guts as it plays a vital role in preventing infections and diseases. Feeding probiotics which contain beneficial bacteria can improve gut health and is an immunity booster food for kids. (How to prepare probiotic food easily?) Fermented foods contain beneficial probiotics that can help improve digestion and immunity. The most common foods that naturally contain probiotics include yogurt, kefir, pickles, kimchi, and some cheeses. These are foods to increase immunity in kids naturally.

Healthy platter: Ensure that your plate is providing your kid with enough vitamins and minerals required in immunity booster food for kids to maintain their immune system (what all foods should be included?). Healthy diet is key to strong immunity. That means make sure you and your kids eat plenty of vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, lean protein and healthy fats. By choosing nutrient based immunity booster food for kids to keep them active and free from diseases.

Consume Zinc: Zinc is an important mineral that shields the body from the attack of outer elements that can cause us harm. Like viruses and bacterias that can invade the body can cause infection. Zinc forms a layer on the cells of the body which fight off the infection before it tries to destroy the cell. It is crucial to maintain high immunity. (What are some Zinc foods?Remember the diaper rash cream that is applied on kids also has zinc, to protect from rashes (bacterias) that can form with the moisture of the diaper and skin. Zinc also helps with healing of wounds faster. Zinc is an essential element in immunity booster food for kids.

Drink plenty of fluids: Drinking water can help improve overall immunity of your body. Staying hydrated helps your body naturally eliminate the bacteria and toxin that causes infections. With the help of water, oxygen and nutrients are distributed throughout the body and waste material is flushed out from the body. Our blood stream is made up of water. It is essential to have enough water to properly transport nutrients to each organ system of our body. And not just immunity, proper water supply is required for every organ in our body to function at its best. Also you can give coconut water and buttermilk as they are foods to increase immunity in child naturally (Try some easy drinks that kids would like)

IMMUNITY BOOSTING FOODS FOR KIDS

As if the flu season was not enough to worry about, this coronavirus is threatening our heads. In the present scenario it has become important to take care of our health, as well as the health of our family members. We have to put extra efforts with children, as most of them are picky eaters and it is also difficult for them to follow health advisories that have been issued. So, it has become necessary to take care of their health and to feed them a proper balanced diet and food to increase immunity in child naturally.

To keep kids healthy, powerful antioxidants like Vitamin A, C, E are needed. Having nuts and seeds daily, eating immunity food for kids like green leafy vegetables, and staying hydrated are some of the preventive measures.

IMMUNITY FOOD FOR KIDS

  • Vegetables: Colourful veggies like carrots, tomatoes, beetroot, broccoli, peas have to be introduced to brighten up your child’s meal. These veggies are a great source of vitamin A, C, E, fibre and antioxidants (why are they important?) that help your child fight infections and are the best immunity food for kids.
  • Probiotics: They are live bacterias that help in digestion and build immunity. Also called good bacterias, they help to keep the gut of a child healthy. Healthy digestive system is vital for childhood immunity and eventually complete body development. Kefir is the best food to increase immunity in child naturally. It’s a healthy probiotic, similar to drinkable yogurt, that can boost the immune system of a child. Being rich in calcium also improves bone health (what does sugar do to our bones?).
  • Root vegetables: Turnips, potatoes, carrots, beetroots and sweet potatoes are some of their examples. Root vegetables absorb lots of nutrients from the soil like phosphorus, sulfur, magnesium (how does this mineral help with stress?), calcium along with being rich in fibre, vitamins, and antioxidants that together protect against diseases and illness and make them best immunity food for kids.
  • Honey: Honey is the food to increase immunity in child naturally. It has been used as a medicine for thousands for years. Some studies support this claim that Manuka honey has antibacterial potential.  It is further researched that the concentration of honey and the bacteria it possesses ultimately impacts the anti-bacterial claim it can make. Nevertheless, frequent runny nose, cold, cough and wheezing can compromise the growth and learning of a child. 2 teaspoon of honey, therefore, may safely relieve coughing and make the child sleep calmly (what else helps in sleep?). Honey is also a good replacement to refined sugars for dessert or drinks.
  • Legume: It is a type of dry fruit usually produced by plants. An important nutritional aspect of legume foods is that they are rich in protein, because plants are generally well nourished with nitrogen, which is essential for making protein in the body. Beans, peas and peanuts are legumes that we use commonly. Soybeans are exceptionally nutritious (like tofu, soy milk). Legumes contain antioxidants that help prevent damage of cells and fight illness. The fibre and other nutrients benefit the digestive system by supporting a stronger gut and hence proved to be an immunity food for kids. (what else helps in digestion?).
  • Fats: They not only supply energy to kids, but also help other fat soluble nutrients like Vitamin A, D, E to do their job properly. They have antioxidant properties which help to fight infections and keep immunity high. For toddlers and young children, giving nut butter is also a source of good fats (Recipe: easy peanut butter balls)
  • Sprouts: Some research indicates that sprouting increases the level of antioxidants and vitamin C in the legume. Consuming this boosts the immune system of the child. Once soaked, a seed gears up all the necessary superpowers (nutrients) to germinate and grow into a plant. Some studies suggest that sprouting also helps increase protein content of seeds which is also easily digestible. The nutrition in sprouts is also 30 times higher than the cooked food, which makes it an essential immunity food for kids. (How does soaking food help?)
  • Turmeric: There is a enough scientific evidence that curcumin compound of turmeric aids in boosting immunity. They also prevents body from any pain, swelling, fever due to its anti-inflammatory property. Medicines derived from this plant have played an important role over years and the plant has been traditionally used for medical purposes over the last 4000 years for both preventing and healing purposes. As temperature changes from cold to warm, intake of turmeric can help keep the kids safe from common cold or flu. Mixing roasted powder with milk or honey to make a syrup can do the trick. Turmeric is the food to increase immunity in child naturally.
  • Vitamin D: Every single cell in the body requires this Vitamin. There is tonnes of scientific research backing up that a deficiency in vitamin D increases chances of infections and it is an important ingredient in immunity food for kids. Our body can also produce this vitamin through exposure to sunlight (cholesterol produces vitamin D). However, deficiency of Vitamin D is extremely common in kids and results in weaker body, including reduced immunity. Food products including ghee, cheese, milk and yogurt are considered to be the most important sources for vegetarians. If the child is allergic to these, then food fortified with vitamin D e.g. cereals, milk etc should be preferred (Do healthy kids need supplements?)

Ayurvedic Diet : Boosting Immunity by eating right

According to Ayurveda, the human body comprises physical, mental and emotional aspects. All these aspects are supremely connected. Everyone has a different composition of body, just like everyone has a unique face or unique fingerprints.

Ayurveda states that any physical discomfort, what we most often call a disease, is nothing but an imbalance in the body’s constitution, called Dosha. The disease is rather a body not at ease and begins with a root cause, that is, an imbalance of Doshas.

  • Three types of Doshas:

Vata: This aspect heads of voluntary movements like blinking eyes, breathing, movement of hands and legs, essentially all the action by cytoplasm fall under vata aspects

Pitta: All activities which our body incurs from ingestion of food to metabolism fall under the aspect of Pitta

Kapha: It’s about nourishment of the body. movement of assimilated food to different parts of the body falls under the Kapha aspect

Boosting immunity is not a curative disease. You cannot boost immunity overnight, it’s a long-term health investment. It needs time, patience and mostly immunity-boosting foods supplementing your diet.

  • Just like machines break down when they over-work or miss overhauling, similarly, the body also breaks down when there is lack of right fuel and/or lack of activity.

Understanding Immunity

Needless to say, most of us understand immunity as the protection agent of our body. If a foreign infection/ virus enters our body, the immunity system identifies it and begins to fight against it. However, sometimes our body is not correctly able to distinguish between harmful virus and the good virus in our body and it gets confused. In such a case our Immune system begins to attack the body itself.

According to Ayurveda, such scenarios (and diseases) where the immune system attacks the body itself, is a result of heavy imbalance of Doshas. The root cause of this can be attributed to the lifestyle we lead or predominantly the food we eat.

Understanding food for Immunity

On an everyday basis, we need to consume proteins, carbs and fats, as they are the essential macronutrients needed for the functioning of the body, but sadly, 83% of the population lacks meeting their requirement of protein or good fats, as most of the food we consume is carb-heavy.

  • In earlier times, food was fresh, wholesome and consumed in its most natural form. There were combinations of foods preferred purely on the basis of health and experience (and are now supported by scientific research). For example, ghee was prepared using fermented curd which retained good bacteria. Whey was made fresh everyday and consumed for protein in early hours (and also to support metabolism, something which is now called the intermittent fasting). Potato was roasted with skin and not boiled or peeled as that results in massive mineral loss. Food and milk was stored in a dark place to secure certain vitamins in wholegrains. Vegetables were paired such as to maximise nutrient absorption.
  • In a striking contrast today, there is consumption of processed food or refined ingredients in at least two meals every day.

Pistachios: 7 reasons to feed your child everyday

Survey of 150 parents reflected on the top concerns they had for their kids. Some of the concerns, mentioned below, can be improved with the consumption of just a single nut- Pistachio! Consuming 15-40 pista for kids aged 3 to 15 years is enough to aid daily nutrition.

A common snack today and used in multiple cuisines, Pistachio became popular only after WWII. It had been growing in the Middle East for several thousand years before its introduction to wider Europe and Asia. It is not a nut originally but a seed of the Pistachio tree.

  • Strong Muscles: This nut has 7g protein in just a handful. It is one of the best nuts to consume in a large quantity since its low in calories yet loaded with good fat. Protein accounts for approximately 21 percent of the total weight of the nut, making it a good source for vegetarians and vegans

Healthy Weight: Pistachios are very low in sugar which will help to keep the tab on child’s sugar consumption. Due to high fibre content it digests slowly and helps in keeping the child full for longer duration. In a study people who ate 1.87 ounces of pistachios over a 12-week period experienced twice the reduction in their body mass index as people who ate pretzels (Junk) instead of pistachios. Both groups consumed roughly the same amount of calories.

Brain: This nut is rich in vitamin E, B6 and healthy fats which are useful for cognitive development of the brain. A research conducted across multiple nuts showed that pistachio consumption produced the greatest gamma wave response which is necessary for learning, memory and cognition in the brain.

  • Immunity: Antioxidants are substances that play a critical role in health. They reduce the risk of diseases by preventing damage to the body’s cells by safeguarding against the free radicals. Pistachios are high in antioxidants compared to other nuts and seeds.
  • Eyesight: Pistachios are a rich source of both antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin which support healthy vision and protect against weak eyesight in future.
  • Digestion: Pistachios are a great source of fibre which support the rise in good bacterias in the gut. This encourages healthy digestion and prevents constipation in kids

Sleep: Packed with protein, vitamin B6, and magnesium, this nut has all that contributes to better sleep. It is a natural source of melatonin which induces sleep. Just a few pistachios an hour before bedtime can do the trick for kids as well as adults.

Peanut: Your kid’s source of over 30 Vitamins and Nutrients

Survey of 150 parents reflected on the top concerns they had for their kids. Some of the concerns, mentioned below, can be improved with the consumption of just a single nut- Peanut! Consuming 15-30 peanuts for kids aged 3 to 15 years is enough to aid daily nutrition.

Strengthening Muscles: Peanut is high in Protein which is vital for growing kids. Protein is key to building tissues required by every organ of the body, repair and maintain body cells, hormones and supply energy.

Stronger Bones: Calcium, Manganese, Magnesium, Phosphorous and Protein together work on making the bones strong. Osteoporosis is a common bone disease that begins early in life and manifests in adulthood.

Improved Digestion: Handful of peanuts can meet 15% of fibre and 25% of Vitamin B3 requirement for the day, both of which help in improving digestion.

Immunity: Peanuts have saturated fat that stay inside the body cells to build a defence system and attack viruses and bacterias.

Eyesight: Being a nut high in Vitamin E, they help to protect the eyes from degeneration and keep the eye cells young and active.

Brain Development: Peanuts carry essential fats and Vitamin B9 for the brain and also memory. Brain, that is just 2% of our body mass but consumes 25% energy of the body, needs fat to perform efficiently for life and maintain cognitive ability.

High Energy: Peanuts contain high amount of Vitamin B2 and B3 which plays a vital role in maintaining the body’s energy supply.

An interesting study on peanut revealed that between two groups of kids under age five, peanut allergy developed in 1.9% of children who ate peanut butter early in their lives, compared with 13.7% of those who didn’t eat peanuts at an early age. One explanation for this difference is that the children who ate peanuts early developed what is called immune tolerance to them. Their young immune systems adapted to the proteins in peanuts so that they did not react to them.
