Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease that has spread rapidly throughout the world. In March 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic. Since then the pandemic has severely impacted health systems, economic and social progress throughout the world. In this article, we will learn whether vaccination of pregnant woman or breastfeeding mothers is safe or not?

COVID-19 is caused by a newly discovered coronavirus now named as the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Coronaviruses (CoV) are zoonotic, and are transmitted between animals and humans. Coronaviruses cause diseases such as the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and more mild illnesses including the common cold. (Home remedies of cold in kids)

The most common signs of infection with COVID-19 include fever, dry cough (Home remedies for cough), shortness of breath or difficulty in breathing, and tiredness or fatigue. Though most people (~80%) experience mild disease and recover without requiring hospitalization. However, globally, around 20% of people who contract COVID-19 become seriously ill and have trouble breathing. Also, in more severe cases, the infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and even lead to death. (Reference: MoHFW)

Vaccination and pregnant WOMAN:

COVID-19 infection during pregnancy may result in rapid deterioration of health of pregnant women and could also affect the foetus. Based on the recommendations from National Technical Advisory Group on Immunization (NTAGI), MoHFW has approved vaccination of pregnant women against COVID-19. But with the condition that the pregnant women may be informed about the risks of exposure to COVID-19 infection along with the risks and benefits associated with the COVID-19 vaccines available in the country.

Moreover, A pregnant woman who opts for vaccination, could be vaccinated at any time of the pregnancy. Also, to help pregnant women make an informed decision to be vaccinated, they should be provided with information about the risks of COVID-19 infection in pregnancy, the benefits of vaccination, along with the likely side effects of vaccination. vaccination in India in pregnant women is showing a hike. (Reference: WHO) (World Health Organization)

Why is COVID 19 vaccine recommended for pregnant women?
  • Pregnancy does not increase the risk to COVID-19 infection, but current evidence indicates that pregnant women are at an increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19 compared to non-pregnant women in case they get infected.
  • Additionally, pregnant women with COVID-19 are at increased risk for preterm birth and might have an increased risk of other adverse pregnancy outcomes.
  • Most pregnant women will be asymptomatic or have mild disease, BUT their health may deteriorate rapidly and that might affect the foetal outcome.
  • It is important that they take all precautions to protect themselves from acquiring COVID-19, including taking vaccination against COVID-19.
  • WHO recommends vaccination in pregnant women when the benefits of vaccination to the pregnant woman outweigh the potential risks.
  • It is therefore advisable that a pregnant woman should take COVID-19 vaccine.

Are there any side effects of the COVID 19 vaccines that can either harm the pregnant woman or her foetus?
  • COVID 19 vaccines available are safe and vaccination protects pregnant women against COVID 19 illness/disease like other individuals. (Immunity building foods)
  • Based on current knowledge, experts believe that COVID -19 vaccines are unlikely to pose a risk to the pregnant person or foetus.
  • Like any medicine a vaccine may have side effects which are normally mild. After getting the vaccine, she can get a mild fever, pain at the injection site, or feel unwell for 1-3 days.
  • The long-term adverse effects and safety of vaccines for foetus and child is not known yet.
  • Very rarely, (one in 1-5 lakh persons) the beneficiary may, after COVID 19 vaccination, experience some of the following symptoms within 20 days after getting the injection which may need immediate attention.
Symptoms occurring within 20 days after receiving any COVID 19 vaccine:
  • Shortness of breath (difficulty in breathing)
  • Chest Pain
  • Pain in limbs / pain on pressing the limbs or swelling in the limbs (arm or calf)
  • Small pinpoint hemorrhages (petechial) or bruising of the skin beyond the vaccination site
  • Persistent abdominal pain with or without vomiting.
  • Seizures in the absence of previous history of seizures with or without vomiting.
  • Severe and persistent headaches with or without vomiting (in the absence of previous history of migraine or chronic headache)
  • Weakness/paralysis of limbs or any particular side of the body
  • Persistent vomiting without any obvious reason
  • Blurred vision/ pain in eyes
  • Any other symptom or health condition which is of concern to the recipient or the family
Are there any specific contraindications for vaccination of PREGNANT WOMAN?

As for the general population, pregnant women should avoid vaccination in the following conditions:

  • Anaphylactic or allergic reaction to the previous dose of COVID-19 vaccine (Home remedies for allergies)
  • Anaphylaxis or allergic reaction to vaccines or injectable therapies, pharmaceutical products, food-items etc.

Vaccine is temporarily contraindicated in the following conditions:

  • Diagnosed COVID-19 infection – defer for 12 weeks from infection or 4 to 8 weeks from recovery
  • Active COVID-19 infection
  • COVID-19 infection treated with anti-COVID-19 monoclonal antibodies or convalescent plasma.

(Reference: MoHFW)

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):
If a pregnant woman has already had COVID-19, when should she be vaccinated?

In case a woman has been infected with COVID-19 infection during the current pregnancy, then she should be vaccinated soon after the delivery.

What are the benefits of VACCINE?

The COVID-19 vaccines produce protection against the disease, as a result of developing an immune response to the SARS-Cov-2 virus. In addition, developing immunity through vaccination means there is a reduced risk of developing the illness and its consequences. So, this is how immunity helps you fight the virus if exposed.

Should we eat or drink differently the day or two after getting vaccinated?

The effectiveness of the vaccine is not dependent on any food or drink before or after taking the vaccine. (Reference: WHO) (World Health Organization)

Is it safe for pregnant women, those planning to become pregnant, and breastfeeding mothers to receive COVID-19 vaccines?

In the interim, WHO recommends that for pregnant women the use of the COVID-19 vaccine depends on the basis of a benefit vs risk assessment. WHO does not recommend pregnancy testing prior to vaccination. Neither does WHO recommend delaying pregnancy or terminating pregnancy because of vaccination. Vaccination with any of the vaccine products assessed by the WHO Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization can be offered to breastfeeding women. Also, WHO does not recommend discontinuation of breastfeeding after vaccination.

Claims on social media suggested that COVID-1919 vaccine could affect female fertility. Is it true?

Rumours or social media posts suggesting that COVID-19 vaccines could cause infertility are not true and totally baseless. Such rumours were floated in the past against other vaccines also e.g. polio and measles. None of the available vaccines affects fertility. All vaccines and their constituents are tested first on animals and later in humans to assess if they have any such side effects. Vaccines are authorized for use only after their safety and efficacy is assured. (Reference: MOHFW)

Should women who are on their periods take the COVID-19 vaccine?

Women can receive a vaccine at any point in their menstrual cycle

(Reference: WHO) (World Health Organization)

What are the side effects of COVID-19 vaccines?

Like any vaccine, COVID-19 vaccines can cause mild, short term side effects. Most reactions to vaccines are mild and go away within a few days on their own.

Reported side effects to COVID-19 vaccines have mostly been mild to moderate and short-lasting. They include: fever, fatigue, headache, muscle pain, chills, diarrhoea, and pain at the injection site. The chances of any of these side effects following vaccination differ according to the specific COVID-19 vaccine. (Reference: WHO)

Health Benefits of Pumpkin Seeds for Kids

Most of us know pumpkin as the fruit used for decorating Jack-o’- lanterns for Halloween, but other than just being a decorative fruit or vegetable, pumpkin offers numerous health benefits to your kids. This winter squash is not a vegetable, but rather a healthy fruit that also contains nutritious edible seeds. The origin of pumpkin is not known but there is evidence that pumpkins were grown in Mexico and North America about 5000 to 7000 BC. There pumpkin seeds health benefit for kids are many. These health benefits can range from improved brain development, help in getting sound sleep, improved liver health, possesses antimicrobial properties, improved urodynamics and supply of essential vitamins and minerals.

When can I start giving pumpkin seeds to my kids?

You can start giving pumpkin seeds to your toddler once he/she has strong enough teeth to chew regular solid food, which can usually be between 1 ½ years of age to 2 years of age. If you are worried whether or not your child can chew the seeds, then you could simply grind the seeds and give it. You can prepare and store it in a jar. An important thing to keep in mind is that when you start collecting these seeds from pumpkin fruit, make sure that before you serve the seeds to your child or if you’re trying to make a paste out of it, you need to remove the outer husk or layer that surrounds the seed. Although this is a time-consuming process, considering the benefits your child can get, it is worth the effort.

(Foods for your child’s brain development?)

Promotes sound sleep:

Another pumpkin seed benefits for health is that they promote proper sleep in kids and adults. Tryptophan is an essential amino acid which helps in producing serotonin and this in turn gets converted into melatonin which is a hormone that helps in getting better sleep. If your kid has trouble sleeping, having a few pumpkin seeds before bed with small amounts of carbohydrates such as a piece of fruit, may be beneficial in providing the body with tryptophan needed for melatonin production, which can lead to better sleep. For younger kids, powdered pumpkin seeds can be an option. (Why is sleep so important for your child’s brain development?)

Improves Urodynamics:

Traditionally, pumpkin seeds have been used for regulating passage of urine. Recent studies have confirmed that pumpkin seed oil can reduce bladder pressure, increase bladder compliance and reduce urethral pressure.

Rich in antioxidants:

Antioxidants are compounds produced in your body or naturally found in some foods that scavenge or neutralize the effects of cell damage by potentially harmful molecules known as free radicals. Pumpkin seeds are a rich source of antioxidants. (What are antioxidants?)

High in magnesium:

Pumpkin seeds are a rich source of magnesium, with 150 mg in a 1-ounce (28-gram) serving. (Puberty in girls)

Strengthens the liver:

The unsaturated fats present in pumpkin seeds are good for strengthening the liver. Studies suggest that a mixture of pumpkin and flax seeds can reduce liver damage. (How to prevent liver disease in kids?)

Zinc is considered an essential nutrient which means that the body cannot produce or store it. For this reason, it is very important to add zinc in your daily diet. Zinc is required for numerous processes in the body like gene expression, growth and development, immune function, protein synthesis, wound healing to name a few. Pumpkin seeds are a good source of zinc. (How can zinc help with hair and skin health?)

In most of our diets and also in our children’s diets, the presence of potassium is becoming very less and the presence of sodium is increasing rapidly which needs to be corrected. (How can potassium rich food help the bones?)

1.Beetroots are superfoods:

Superfood contains essential vitamins, antioxidants, micro & macro nutrients and fiber and for this reason, beetroots can definitely be called a superfood as it contains all these nutrients. 3.Loaded with iron:

Iron is required in the body to make new blood cells which help to carry oxygen to different parts of the body. There are two types of iron: heme-iron which is found in animal products and non-heme iron which is found in beets, grains & legumes. Thus, another reason why your kids should eat beets is that it can prevent anemia in children by increasing their iron levels. Anemia is a condition in which one lacks enough healthy red blood cells to carry adequate oxygen to the body’s tissues. Having anemia can make your child feel tired and weak. Studies suggest that drinking 500ml of beetroot juice a day can reduce the risk of anemia in kids. Therefore, any time of the day is the best time to drink beetroot juice. (Which other foods can help to increase iron levels?)

4.Boosts Immunity:

Beetroots are a natural antioxidant storehouse and they are essential to enhance ‎your kids’ immune system. Moreobers, beets can help to enhance the immunity of babies & young kids whose immune system is still developing and this is another reason why your kids should eat beets. (Foods to boost immunity?)

5.Helps in cleansing the body:

Combining cucumber, carrot juice & beetroot juice can help to cleanse the body, especially the gallbladder and the kidneys. If your child enjoys lots of junk food like chips, pizza, burger etc., including this juice in his/her diet will help to cleanse the system. (Why is cleansing or detox important?)

6.Increases stamina and energy levels:

There are many health benefits of beetroot for children who are engaged in any types of sports or athletic games. Studies suggest that when athletes add beetroot juice to their regime, it may support exercise endurance and improve performance. It also aids recovery because when muscles are in a resting state, the nitrates present in beetroot helps to bring more oxygen to the muscle cells helping muscles to recover more efficiently. In general, including beetroot in your child’s diet can give the energy boost his/her body needs.

7.Improves blood circulation:

Betanin is responsible for the red color of beetroots. When you think beetroot, you think red, Blood red! This is the reason why this vegetable can do wonders for your blood circulation. The presence of iron and magnesium helps in blood production, thus helping to prevent anemia. Research suggests that drinking 500ml of beetroot juice a day significantly lowers blood pressure and it was found that blood pressure was reduced in healthy volunteers within an hour of drinking the juice.

Is beetroot safe for babies?

You can give beetroot for infants just like any other vegetable. Beetroot is safe for infants and can be introduced when he/she has turned 6 months old and started consuming solid foods. Health Benefits of Ashwagandha for Kids and Teenagers

what are the benefits of ashwagandha

Withania somnifera or Indian ginseng, winter cherry or Ashwagandha is an Indian Ayurvedic herb that has been used for medicinal purposes over centuries. The Sanskrit word ashwa means horse and gandha means aroma which technically represents a fragrant root that is mainly used in various Ayurvedic products. The sense behind this name is that when consumed it can provide the strength and power of horses. The ashwagandha plant is a minor shrub that also bears fruits. Its root is not only used for medicinal purposes, but also used in dietary and natural Ayurvedic practices. It is commonly manufactured as ashwagandha powder or capsules and is available in general stores that sell Ayurvedic medicine. What are the benefits of Ashwagandha? Some important health benefits of ashwagandha include treatment of anxiety, stress-related issues, and skin (How to prevent skin dryness?) diseases such as leukoderma, memory functions, gastric ailments, arthritis, and insomnia.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF Ashwagandha FOR KIDS AND TEENAGERS:

Reduces Stress & Anxiety:

Ashwagandha is an adaptogen herb. Adaptogens are herbal supplements that work to counteract the effects of stress in the body. Stress causes very real physical changes in the body, including harming the neurological, endocrine, and immune systems. Adaptogens have stimulant properties that help counteract those harmful effects. Amongst many benefits of Ashwagandha, the most important is that, it can be a natural way to enable our kids’ bodies to handle and tolerate stress (which foods can help to manage stress?) way better. Studies have shown that Ashwagandha is an excellent stress reliever. This can be immensely helpful for our children and teenagers.

Promotes Better Sleep and Relaxation:

This herb can help children to improve sleep (Some foods can help to get better sleep) and thus health benefits of Ashwagandha include not only reducing stress but also improving overall well-being. In today’s world, children live in a world of electronic devices. Their exposure to gadgets and their electro-magnetic frequencies (EMF) starts from birth or even earlier on. One of the many negative consequences is improper sleep. While reducing their screen time and exposure to EMF itself can significantly improve sleep, some children may need more support to achieve a good night’s sleep. Research suggests that ashwagandha root contains sleep-inducing compounds. If you have existing sleep or anxiety related medication in your prescriptions, it is best not to combine ashwagandha products with it. In case you want to try ashwagandha you should see your pharmacist or doctor and learn about the combinations first.

Improves Brain Power:

Health benefits of Ashwagandha also include raising the level of acetylcholine, the most important neurotransmitter associated with boosting brain power (How to boost your kids brain power?). Studies suggest that impaired cognitive function including inability to learn are associated with decreased levels of acetylcholine. Research on children with ADHD indicates Ashwagandha raises acetylcholine by inhibiting the activity of the enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine. Furthermore, Ashwagandha root also contains choline, a substance necessary for the formation of acetylcholine.

Boosts Immunity:

Improving our children’s immune system (How foods help in strengthening immunity?) is something all parents want to achieve especially during this pandemic. As an anti-oxidant and immunomodulator, boosting immunity is one of the most popular benefits of Ashwagandha for kids. The root activates and increases the levels of enzymes and macrophages, a type of white blood cell of the immune system that engulfs and digests substances that do not have the type of proteins specific to healthy body cells. It also promotes the development of antibodies, which is a major factor in improving the body’s response to a health-threatening infection.

Increases muscle mass & strength:

One of the other benefits of Ashwagandha is that it is a safe and natural way to support a kid’s muscle strength to avoid injuries (How to fix growing leg pain in kids?) . In an 8-week randomized human clinical trial involving 40 healthy adult college students, Ashwagandha improved muscular strength and increased endurance, speed, and coordination better than placebo. The dosage used in this trial was 500 mg/day of Ashwagandha root extract.

Reduces depression:

Although it hasn’t been thoroughly studied, a few studies suggest ashwagandha may help alleviate depression. In one controlled 60-day study in 64 stressed adults, those who took 600 mg of high-concentration ashwagandha extract per day reported a 79% reduction in severe depression, while the placebo group reported a 10% increase. However, only one of the participants in this study had a history of depression. For this reason, the relevance of the results is unclear.

Might reduce blood sugar levels:

Studies suggest that ashwagandha helps to lower blood sugar levels. One test-tube study found that it increased insulin secretion and improved insulin sensitivity in muscle cells. Also, several human studies have suggested that it can reduce blood sugar levels in both healthy people and those with diabetes. Additionally, in a 4-week study in people with schizophrenia, those treated with ashwagandha had an average reduction in fasting blood sugar levels of 13.5 mg/dL, compared with 4.5 mg/dL in those who received a placebo.

May reduce Inflammation:

Benefits of Ashwagandha also include reducing inflammation. Several animal studies have shown that ashwagandha helps decrease inflammation. Studies in humans have found that it increases the activity of natural killer cells, which are immune cells that fight infection and help you stay healthy. It has also been shown to decrease markers of inflammation, such as C-reactive protein (CRP). This marker is linked to an increased risk of heart disease. In one controlled study, the group who took 250 mg of standardized ashwagandha extract daily had a 36% decrease in CRP, on average, compared with a 6% decrease in the placebo group.

Improves heart health:

In addition to its anti-inflammatory effects, benefits of ashwagandha also include improving heart health by reducing cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Animal studies have found that it significantly decreases levels of these blood fats. One study in rats found that it lowered total cholesterol and triglyceride levels by 53% and nearly 45%, respectively. While controlled human studies have reported less dramatic results, they have observed some impressive improvements in these markers. In a 60-day study in chronically stressed adults, the group taking the highest dosage of standardized ashwagandha extract experienced a 17% decrease in LDL (bad) cholesterol and an 11% decrease in triglycerides, on average.

Fights sickness:

Ashwagandha has shown to have strong anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal as well as antibacterial properties which help to fight off sickness. Ashwagandha might be a useful back-to-school supplement, which you could add into your child’s breakfast (Some healthy breakfast ideas) smoothie to support immune health. A study with Ashwagandha root extract showed lowered rates of infection. It is unclear whether this benefit is due to Ashwagandha’s antibacterial or immune-boosting qualities, or possibly even both.

How to take Ashwagandha?

Ashwagandha powder mixed with milk: Ashwagandha powder is the base for any other way of taking ashwagandha. Here, Ashwagandha roots, which have most of the medicinal benefits are dried, cut, and sifted for tea or powdered to be taken with milk.

Ashwagandha churna balls: These churna balls are made with herbs like Gokshura, Safed Musli, and Shilajit to maximize the benefits of Ashwagandha for ED.

Ashwagandha chocolate: A dark chocolate infused with ashwagandha. This combination helps in boosting libido and acts as a natural aphrodisiac.

Ashwagandha tea: This is the best caffeine-free drink to soothe you into a restful sleep every night. All you need to do is boil the herb’s roots in water so that the water is infused.

Ashwagandha Tablets: The most hassle-free and convenient way to take ashwagandha.

Ashwagandha with water: If you are a vegan, this is the easiest way to consume ashwagandha. The prep is similar to ashwagandha milk but without the milk obviously. Replace the milk with water and you can drink this mixture.

Ashwagandha Oil: From arthritis to even a sore day after working out, ashwagandha oil is your go-to since it relieves muscle tension.

Ashwagandha paste for your hair: Ashwagandha can reverse premature greying of hair (How to get strong hairs and healthy scalp?)by producing melanin, the pigment responsible for the colour of your hair.

Foods with Antioxidants your kid must start eating today

In today’s era of pandemic, antioxidants have become a vital marketing tool, as most of the food companies claim for the presence of antioxidants in their products that boost up immunity and fight infections. Before going any further we should know, what are antioxidants, foods with antioxidants and how it works? (What are some Ayurvedic herbs for immunity?)

What are Antioxidants?

Antioxidants are compounds produced in your body or naturally found in some foods that scavenge or neutralize the effects of cell damage by potentially harmful molecules known as free radicals. Free radicals are highly unstable molecules that are naturally formed when you breathe or when your body converts food into energy. There are also some environmental sources that cause free radicals like air pollution and sunlight. Free radicals can cause oxidative stress, which is a process that is responsible for cell damage. In simple words, when any object oxidizes; it becomes bad, over ripe, aging, and reduces nutrients.

Fortunately eating a diet rich in antioxidants or antioxidant rich foods help to fight oxidative stress and reduce the risk of many chronic diseases. Some examples of antioxidants are: Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Selenium, Beta carotene, Lycopene, Lutein, Zeaxanthin, Manganese, Polyphenols. How to increase breast milk: 7 foods to eat

Giving birth to a baby is altogether a new journey for a woman. A new chapter in life with a new character MOTHER. The bonding between a mother and a child is pure and pious. During early days of motherhood, the main concern of a mother is whether she is producing enough breast milk for the baby or not. Every cry of the baby makes her restless, thinking that maybe he/she is not getting enough milk. Here are some foods that increase breast milk in mothers.

The first five to six weeks are crucial for a first time mom to understand and find a proper routine. It is the same time when the body is regulating a healthy supply of breast milk. Though there are small numbers of mothers who are not able to produce enough breast milk, still it is a common fear. Some tips and foods that increase breast milk production in new moms and can help to get over this fear. Before that all we have to understand are the causes for low breast milk supply.

Reasons of low breast milk supply
Delay:

Separation of mother and baby due to some medical conditions can affect milk production. If the mother is unwell after delivery or the baby needs admission to a special care nursery, it delays the breast feed and hence the body stops producing enough milk.

Poor attachment:

Some mothers have flat or inverted nipples which makes it difficult for the baby to suck milk properly. This may cause poor attachment to the breast. Sleepy babies due to having jaundice at birth time and lip or tongue tie are some other causes which detach babies to get required milk supply from breast feed.

Schedule:

Baby needs to get fed whenever he/she demands. Scheduling or making a time table to feed the baby can result in low breast milk production.

Skipping

Some mothers prefer breast feed and formula feed for their babies.  But skipping breastfeed and depending more on formula can lead to low supply of breast milk.

Contraceptive pills

To escape from fear of getting pregnant again, some women start taking contraceptive pills that contain estrogen. This affects breast milk production.

Smoking

Smoking can also obstruct the production of milk. It can also pass through the negative effects of nicotine to babies through feed. Further in life babies may face a range of health problems due to this bad practice.

Ways to increase breast milk production
Demand and supply

Breastfeed your baby often as the body makes milk on the law of demand and supply. The more you breastfeed, the more your body get signal to produce milk. By nursing your baby every two to three hours you can be able to naturally increase your breast milk supply.

Breast pump

Power pump is a great way to boost up your breast milk production. This empties your breast fully and Indicates body to make more milk.

Proper diet

A nursing mom should take proper care of her food intake. It is the most effective way to increase milk supply. Lactating mom must organize her drinking and eating of a proper balanced meal throughout the day as nothing can hold milk supply faster than being hungry and dehydrated. (Easy source of protein for mothers)

Breastfeed from both sides

During the early days it is advisable to feed your baby 8-12 times in a day. Always try to feed the baby from both sides. If it is not working, you can use a pump on the other side. It will stimulate more milk production.

Rest and sleep:

Proper rest and a good sleep time can help your body to boost milk supply. After you deliver the baby, your breast milk supply starts to build up.  Many factors such as proper nutritious diet, hydration and relaxation influence this process. Lactation cookies play an important role to increase milk production in lactating mothers. Some foods that promote milk production are used to make these cookies. These are the best things to include in a new mom’s diet to overcome low milk supply issues. (How does sleep help a child with brain development?)

VITAMIN D, CALCIUM AND KIDS: ARE THEY BUILDING STRONG BONES?

One of the most important minerals in our body is CALCIUM. Bones are 70% calcium and it is only calcium which gives bones their hardness for protection and support. Bones also serve as the calcium bank of the body. Sometimes people get confused between vitamin D and calcium. Vitamin D helps the body to absorb calcium and works with it to build strong bones. It moves calcium from the intestine to the bloodstream and into the bones. If you are thinking that your child is getting enough vitamin D only by drinking milk, then you may be partially correct. Recent study shows that most of the children are not getting essential vitamins and minerals, and especially vitamin D. Some children with low vitamin D complain of pain in the legs and body. Very low vitamin D can lead to soft bones, causing rickets, a bone softening disease and also increase the risk of bone fracture in children. From age 9 – 18 children need more calcium to meet the daily recommended intake. Interestingly, it is only till mid-20s that kids can improve their bones which will last them a lifetime. Sunshine is considered as the natural source of vitamin D in the body. Every cell of our body has vitamin D receptors. So, if your child is in the sunlight three times a week for about 15-20 minutes he/she will get enough UV rays to produce vitamin D. Not just bones and teeth, vitamin D builds immunity in the body and fights off attacking viruses and bacteria.

FOODS HIGH IN CALCIUM AND VITAMIN D:

Cow’s milk and its products: It is the most commonly consumed type of milk and naturally a good source of many nutrients like calcium, protein, phosphorus and Vitamin B2. In several countries, it is fortified with vitamin D because milk doesn’t naturally contain vitamin D, but is one of the most widely used calcium rich foods for kids. These two work together to keep the bones strong. There are some dairy products made of cow’s milk like cheese, yogurt which are a good source of vitamin D (How is it used in the rest of the world?)

Cereals: In comparison to other natural resources, fortified corn flakes and oat meals or granola mixes may provide less vitamin D, but still they can be a good way to boost the vitamin D levels. These cereals can be consumed together with milk or yogurt to achieve both calcium and vitamin D for the body. The most important check to make here is the sugar levels in the cereal. Added sugar intake can adversely impact calcium and vitamin D levels. (how does sugar impact bones?)

Egg yolk: Eggs are one of the highest natural sources of vitamin D. Just one whole large egg provides 50% of vitamin D required for the day. It helps to maintain strong bones and teeth. Those who can may opt for fish (salmon, sardines) also as a source of vitamin D.

Banana: The yummy bananas are a great source of magnesium, which plays an important role in activating vitamin D in the body. Journal of the American osteopathic Association, suggests that- it is essential to consume the recommended amount of magnesium to obtain the optimal benefits of vitamin D. So while bananas don’t have vitamin D directly, it enables absorption. In addition, bananas are also a great source of quick energy (simple carbs) and prebiotic fibre (for digestion) for kids. Win-win!

Moringa: Moringa is a super food. It has 3 times more calcium than milk which makes it an excellent food to treat weak or damaged bones and also one of the best non dairy sources of calcium. Some studies also indicate that moringa can heal damaged bones thus making it a must have calcium rich foods for bones. Dried moringa leaf powder has 17 times more vitamin D than fortified milk. In addition to this, it’s a fix for digestion troubles, immunity and iron.

Ragi: Ragi is also one of the foods high in calcium and vitamin D.  It is said that no other plant source provides calcium the way ragi can making it one of a popular non-dairy sources of calcium. It also has vitamin D and along with calcium, it can help in improving bone strength. It is a whole grain that is gluten free also and can be used in baking cakes and cookies.(Easy nutritious ragi recipe)

Mushroom: Mushrooms are a rich ‘plant’ source of vitamin D. Researchers has found that we can increase levels of vitamin D even more by exposing mushrooms to the sun for 10-15 minutes. Mushrooms can be consumed either directly or also in the form of dried mushroom powder, which can be used throughout the year, even when the season of mushroom has passed. For kids who are picky and don’t particularly enjoy eating mushroom, using the powder is an easy option. You can hide it in any batter or dough to make pancakes, wraps, bread, paratha, pizza. (Easy pizza recipe to hide mushroom powder)

12 Immunity Booster FOODS FOR KIDS

The best gift you can ever give to your child is a healthy body and strong immunity to fight infections. Life is more difficult nowadays. From the past two decades, our lifestyle, especially food habits, has evolved. This change, not necessarily all good, has mainly affected kids as they are the ones latching on to the trend of packaged comfort foods. Ill health is the biggest hurdle in a child’s life journey. From food, climate, eating habits, and lifestyle, to almost everything is constantly changing (not all for good as it seems).  In this evolving scenario, immunity plays a major role and your responsibility as a parent to provide the best foods for immunity boosting to your child.

Immune system is a complex network of cells, that not only protects your body from harmful disease causing viruses and bacteria but also aids in tissue repair and wound healing. In the context of corona pandemic, we can only rely on our immunity to safeguard us from the nerve-wrecking battlefield. While, to some extent, our immune system depends on genetics, it is also majorly influenced by our everyday choices- food and lifestyle.

Immunity boosting is a comprehensive process which starts right from the early age. As babies grow and start preschool, they are more likely to be attacked by viruses and bacteria causing cold cough and other infections. Building immunity becomes key at this early stage.

Tips to Strengthen Immunity
  • Breastfeed your baby (studies suggest that breast milk is the best kids immunity booster available naturally.)
  • Follow kid’s vaccination schedule
  • Encourage kids to eat nutritious and healthy diet
  • Proper rest and sleep (studies indicate that sleep and immunity are positively related)
  • Develop hygienic habits (washing hands)
  • Access to fresh air and sunlight (outdoor activities and vitamin D both help build immunity)
  • Avoid Antibiotics (unless necessary since they reduce good bacteria in the body which build immunity)

There are certain nutrients required for the growth and functions of immune cells such as Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Zinc, Selenium, Iron and Protein. Focusing on nutrient rich food and a well-balanced diet is the best way to boost your kid’s immunity.

Immunity Booster Food for Kids
Vegetables

Encouraging your child to eat a variety of vegetables in all colors like Broccoli, Spinach, bell paper, tomato, carrot, and beetroot in a day will take care of multiple vitamins and minerals required to keep the immunity high. (How to give complete nutrition for kids?)

Cinnamon is generally regarded as safe to give to your baby in small amounts after they turn 6 months of age. Cinnamon doesn’t commonly cause an allergic reaction in children or adults. Though heavy exposure to cinnamon can cause stomach upset, skin or mouth irritation, and possibly problems with bleeding due to decreased blood clotting but a sprinkle of cinnamon on your baby’s food probably won’t cause a problem. ENLARGED TONSIL AND ADENOIDS IN CHILDREN

Enlarged tonsil and adenoid is a very common problem faced by children in their preschool and teenage years and is known as Tonsillitis. According to the American Academy of Otolaryngology, almost every child in the United States experiences at least one episode of tonsillitis.

There are generally three types of tonsils in kids:

  • Acute tonsillitis: These symptoms usually last 3 to 4 days but can last up to 2 weeks too.
  • Recurrent tonsillitis: This is when child get tonsillitis several times in a year.
  • Chronic tonsillitis: This is when child has a long term tonsilinfection.
enlarged Tonsil in Kids and its causes:

Tonsils are two oval shaped pads of lymphoid tissue located at the back of the throat, one on each side that helps the body to fight infection. Adenoids are located higher and further back, where the nasal passage connect with the throat. The tonsils are visible through mouth but the adenoids are not. The role of Tonsils and adenoids is to confine bacteria and viruses entering through the throat before they reach the rest of the body and to produce antibodies. Sometimes, bacteria and viruses get into the tonsils and infect them, which causes the enlargement of tonsils. School going children are more exposed to viral or bacterial infections and hence at more risk of Tonsillitis. The most common bacteria causing Tonsillitis is Streptococcus pyogenes that causes strep throat.

What are the Symptoms of enlarged tonsil

Tonsils in kids may vary depending on the cause and severity of infection. If kid’s throat hurts and it becomes difficult to eat, drink or even swallow, then he/ she might be suffering from enlarged tonsil or Tonsillitis.

Other symptoms include red, swollen tonsils, white or yellow patches on the tonsils, sore throat, fever, bad breath, stomach ache, scratchy or throaty voice, headache and neck pain.

In younger children who are unable to express properly, signs include drooling, refusal to eat and unusual fussiness. Normally, tonsils and adenoids return to their normal size when the infection is over.

Complications: Enlarged tonsils in kids are considered serious if they cause symptoms like chronic ear infections, obstructive sleep apnea, recurring sinusitis and difficulty in breathing. You should visit an ENT Doctor in such cases.

Treatment: Enlarged tonsils treatment usually depends on the cause. If the tonsillitis is caused by bacteria, the doctor will prescribe antibiotics to kill bacteria. In case, it is caused by a virus, antibiotics don’t work and kid’s body will fight the infection on its own. In some cases, if the infection is severe and causing serious symptoms, doctors might advise surgery to remove the tonsils.

How to prevent it?

The germs causing tonsils in kids are contagious and hence following good hygiene practices might help to prevent it.

  • Wash hands thoroughly and frequently
  • Avoid sharing food, drinking glasses, bottles or utensils with other kids
  • Replace their toothbrushes after being diagnosed with tonsillitis

To prevent the spreading of infection to other kids in case your child is infected:

  1. Keep your child at home
  2. Teach your child to sneeze or cough into a tissue
  3. Teach your child to wash hands after sneezing or coughing
Home remedies to relieve the symptoms of enlarged tonsil
Drink plenty of warm liquids:

Drinking warm liquids like soups, broths and teas helps in soothing the sore throat. Herbal teas which include honey, pectin or glycerin, helps to form a protective film over the mucous membranes in the mouth and throat and thus help in soothing irritation.

Avoid Hard Foods:

Eating hard or sharp foods like chips, crackers, dry cereal, toast, raw carrots and apples may scratch the throat, resulting in further irritation and inflammation, and hence such foods should be avoided.

Gargle with salt water:

Gargling with salt water helps to reduce the pain or tickling in the back of the throat. Warm salt water can help to disinfect the area and reduce inflammation. Salt water mixture can be made by adding a quarter teaspoon of salt to 8 ounces of warm water and stirring it until the salt dissolves. Gargle with salt water for a few seconds before spitting it out and repeat the process as and when necessary. Younger children should avoid it as they might inhale the fluid. Steam inhalation can also help to reduce the discomfort.

Increase Indoor Humidity:

Dry air can further add to the irritation in the throat and hence keeping a cool mist humidifier inside the room of a kid suffering from tonsillitis might help to relieve the discomfort.

Avoid straining the voice:

Since the voice becomes muffled due to the swelling in the throat, kid might be tempted to raise the voice, but this might further irritate the throat.

Get plenty of rest:

Taking proper rest at home allows the body to fight off the infection and even saves from any other infection which might be caught from going out.

Medicated throat candies (lozenges):

Medicated lozenges contain anaesthetic medicines to numb and soothe the throat and also contain anti-inflammatory drugs to comfort swelling and inflammation in the throat due o enlarged tonsil. For younger children, lozenges should be avoided as they might cause choking due to their big size.

Foods and herbs that can help:
Tulsi or Holy Basil:

Tulsi is a plant which is commonly found in most of the Indian households due to its medicinal properties. It has antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties. It has qualities that help in reducing the swelling and pain in the throat and thus speed up the healing process. Drink made by boiling tulsi leaves also helps in boosting immunity. Turmeric:

Turmeric has strong anti-inflammatory and antiseptic qualities which help to fight the tonsil in kids and relieve the symptoms. Ayurveda recommends using 1 cup of hot water with 1/2 teaspoon turmeric and 1/2 teaspoon salt mixed in. Gargle with this mixture morning and evening. It is particularly helpful before going to bed. It will help get rid of the inflammation and soreness. Alternatively, you can add one teaspoon of turmeric powder and a pinch of ground black pepper to a glass of warm milk. Drink it at night for two to three days to speed up the healing process.

Fenugreek seeds or Methi:

Methi again has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that helps to fight the bacteria and gives instant relief from pain and inflammation.

  • Method:
