Vitamin D, Calcium and Kids: Are they building strong bones in Kids?

One of the most important minerals in our body is CALCIUM. Bones are 70% calcium and it is only calcium which gives bones their hardness for protection and support. Bones also serve as the calcium bank of the body. Sometimes people get confused between vitamin D and calcium. Vitamin D helps the body to absorb calcium and works with it to build strong bones. It moves calcium from the intestine to the bloodstream and into the bones. If you are thinking that your child is getting enough vitamin D only by drinking milk, then you may be partially correct. There are some more foods for vitamin D and calcium other than milk which are great source of these nutrients.

Recent study shows that most of the children are not getting essential vitamins and minerals, and especially vitamin D. Some children with low vitamin D complain of pain in the legs and body ache. Very low vitamin D can lead to soft bones, causing rickets, a bone softening disease and also increase the risk of bone fracture in children. From age 9 – 18 children need more calcium to meet the daily recommended intake. Interestingly, it is only till mid-20s that kids can improve their bones which will last them a lifetime. Sunshine is considered as the natural source of vitamin D in the body. Every cell of our body has vitamin D receptors. So, if your child is in the sunlight three times a week for about 15-20 minutes he/she will get enough UV rays to produce vitamin D. Not just bones and teeth, vitamin D builds immunity in the body and fights off attacking viruses and bacteria.

FOODS FOR VITAMIN D AND CALCIUM:

Cow’s milk and its products:

It is the most commonly consumed type of milk and naturally a good source of many nutrients like calcium, protein, phosphorus and Vitamin B2. In several countries, it is fortified with vitamin D because milk doesn’t naturally contain vitamin D, but is one of the most widely used calcium rich foods for kids. These two work together to keep the bones strong. There are some dairy products made of cow’s milk like cheese, yogurt which are a good source of vitamin D

Cereals:

In comparison to other natural resources, fortified corn flakes and oat meals or granola mixes may provide less vitamin D, but still they can be a good way to boost the vitamin D levels. These cereals can be consumed together with milk or yogurt to achieve both calcium and vitamin D for the body. The most important check to make here is the sugar levels in the cereal. Added sugar intake can adversely impact calcium and vitamin D levels.

Win-win!

Mushrooms can be consumed either directly or also in the form of dried mushroom powder, which can be used throughout the year, even when the season of mushroom has passed. 12 Immunity Booster Foods For Kids

The best gift you can ever give to your child is a healthy body and strong immunity to fight infections. Life is more difficult nowadays. From the past two decades, our lifestyle, especially food habits, has evolved. This change, not necessarily all good, has mainly affected kids as they are the ones latching on to the trend of packaged comfort foods. Ill health is the biggest hurdle in a child’s life journey. From food, climate, eating habits, and lifestyle, to almost everything is constantly changing (not all for good as it seems).  In this evolving scenario, immunity plays a major role and your responsibility as a parent to provide the best foods for immunity boosting to your child.

Immune system is a complex network of cells, that not only protects your body from harmful disease causing viruses and bacteria but also aids in tissue repair and wound healing. In the context of corona pandemic, we can only rely on our immunity to safeguard us from the nerve-wrecking battlefield. While, to some extent, our immune system depends on genetics, it is also majorly influenced by our everyday choices- food and lifestyle.

Immunity boosting is a comprehensive process which starts right from the early age. As babies grow and start preschool, they are more likely to be attacked by viruses and bacteria causing cold cough and other infections. Building immunity becomes key at this early stage.

WHATSAPP for concerns like Speech Delay, Low Weight, Frequent Illness, Hyperactivity, Low Concentration, Weak Eyesight, Improper Sleep, Pigmentation, Pores, Face Marks, Fine Lines , Lactation etc.

Tips to Strengthen Immunity

ENLARGED TONSIL AND ADENOIDS IN CHILDREN

Enlarged tonsil and adenoid is a very common problem faced by children in their preschool and teenage years and is known as Tonsillitis. According to the American Academy of Otolaryngology, almost every child in the United States experiences at least one episode of tonsillitis.

There are generally three types of tonsils in kids:

  • Acute tonsillitis: These symptoms usually last 3 to 4 days but can last up to 2 weeks too.
  • Recurrent tonsillitis: This is when child get tonsillitis several times in a year.
  • Chronic tonsillitis: This is when child has a long term tonsilinfection.
enlarged Tonsil in Kids and its causes:

Tonsils are two oval shaped pads of lymphoid tissue located at the back of the throat, one on each side that helps the body to fight infection. Adenoids are located higher and further back, where the nasal passage connect with the throat. The tonsils are visible through mouth but the adenoids are not. The role of Tonsils and adenoids is to confine bacteria and viruses entering through the throat before they reach the rest of the body and to produce antibodies. Sometimes, bacteria and viruses get into the tonsils and infect them, which causes the enlargement of tonsils. School going children are more exposed to viral or bacterial infections and hence at more risk of Tonsillitis. The most common bacteria causing Tonsillitis is Streptococcus pyogenes that causes strep throat.

What are the Symptoms of enlarged tonsil

Tonsils in kids may vary depending on the cause and severity of infection. If kid’s throat hurts and it becomes difficult to eat, drink or even swallow, then he/ she might be suffering from enlarged tonsil or Tonsillitis.

Other symptoms include red, swollen tonsils, white or yellow patches on the tonsils, sore throat, fever, bad breath, stomach ache, scratchy or throaty voice, headache and neck pain.

In younger children who are unable to express properly, signs include drooling, refusal to eat and unusual fussiness. Normally, tonsils and adenoids return to their normal size when the infection is over.

Complications: Enlarged tonsils in kids are considered serious if they cause symptoms like chronic ear infections, obstructive sleep apnea, recurring sinusitis and difficulty in breathing. You should visit an ENT Doctor in such cases.

Treatment: Enlarged tonsils treatment usually depends on the cause. If the tonsillitis is caused by bacteria, the doctor will prescribe antibiotics to kill bacteria. In case, it is caused by a virus, antibiotics don’t work and kid’s body will fight the infection on its own. In some cases, if the infection is severe and causing serious symptoms, doctors might advise surgery to remove the tonsils.

How to prevent it?

The germs causing tonsils in kids are contagious and hence following good hygiene practices might help to prevent it.

  • Wash hands thoroughly and frequently
  • Avoid sharing food, drinking glasses, bottles or utensils with other kids
  • Replace their toothbrushes after being diagnosed with tonsillitis

To prevent the spreading of infection to other kids in case your child is infected:

  1. Keep your child at home
  2. Teach your child to sneeze or cough into a tissue
  3. Teach your child to wash hands after sneezing or coughing
Home remedies to relieve the symptoms of enlarged tonsil
Drink plenty of warm liquids:

Drinking warm liquids like soups, broths and teas helps in soothing the sore throat. Herbal teas which include honey, pectin or glycerin, helps to form a protective film over the mucous membranes in the mouth and throat and thus help in soothing irritation.

Avoid Hard Foods:

Eating hard or sharp foods like chips, crackers, dry cereal, toast, raw carrots and apples may scratch the throat, resulting in further irritation and inflammation, and hence such foods should be avoided.

Gargle with salt water:

Gargling with salt water helps to reduce the pain or tickling in the back of the throat. Warm salt water can help to disinfect the area and reduce inflammation. Salt water mixture can be made by adding a quarter teaspoon of salt to 8 ounces of warm water and stirring it until the salt dissolves. Gargle with salt water for a few seconds before spitting it out and repeat the process as and when necessary. Younger children should avoid it as they might inhale the fluid. Steam inhalation can also help to reduce the discomfort.

Increase Indoor Humidity:

Dry air can further add to the irritation in the throat and hence keeping a cool mist humidifier inside the room of a kid suffering from tonsillitis might help to relieve the discomfort.

Avoid straining the voice:

Since the voice becomes muffled due to the swelling in the throat, kid might be tempted to raise the voice, but this might further irritate the throat.

Get plenty of rest:

Taking proper rest at home allows the body to fight off the infection and even saves from any other infection which might be caught from going out.

Medicated throat candies (lozenges):

Medicated lozenges contain anaesthetic medicines to numb and soothe the throat and also contain anti-inflammatory drugs to comfort swelling and inflammation in the throat due o enlarged tonsil. For younger children, lozenges should be avoided as they might cause choking due to their big size.

Foods and herbs that can help:
Tulsi or Holy Basil:

Tulsi is a plant which is commonly found in most of the Indian households due to its medicinal properties. It has antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties. It has qualities that help in reducing the swelling and pain in the throat and thus speed up the healing process. Drink made by boiling tulsi leaves also helps in boosting immunity. (Know some more foods that helps in boosting immunity)

  • Method:
  • Add 10 to 12 basil leaves to one and one-half cups of water. Boil for 10 minutes. Strain and add the juice from one lemon to the solution. Optionally, add one teaspoon of honey to sweeten it or 2 grams of black pepper to spice it up.Drink this three times a day for two to three days.
Cinnamon:

Cinnamon is rich in antimicrobial properties and hence suppresses the growth of bacteria in tonsils thereby comforting the pain, swelling and inflammation due to enlarged tonsil.

  • Method:
  • Add one teaspoon of cinnamon powder to a glass of hot water. Mix in two teaspoons of honey. Sip on it slowly while it is still warm. Drink this two or three times a day for one week.
Turmeric:

Turmeric has strong anti-inflammatory and antiseptic qualities which help to fight the tonsil in kids and relieve the symptoms. Ayurveda recommends using 1 cup of hot water with 1/2 teaspoon turmeric and 1/2 teaspoon salt mixed in. Gargle with this mixture morning and evening. It is particularly helpful before going to bed. It will help get rid of the inflammation and soreness. Alternatively, you can add one teaspoon of turmeric powder and a pinch of ground black pepper to a glass of warm milk. Drink it at night for two to three days to speed up the healing process.

Fenugreek seeds or Methi:

Methi again has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that helps to fight the bacteria and gives instant relief from pain and inflammation.

  • Method:
  • Add two tablespoons of fenugreek seeds to two to three cups of water. Allow to simmer for 30 minutes. Strain and let it cool. Gargle with this water for at least 30 seconds, and then spit it out. Repeat twice daily until you get comfort.

A MOM’S OPINION ABOUT HOW IMMUNITY BOOSTER HELPED TO FIGHT AGAINST ALLEGIES

What are allergies?

Allergies are abnormal reactions from your immune system to things that are usually harmless to most people. Our immune system protects us from harmful organisms that cause illness. If you have an allergy that means your immune system mistakes a harmless substance as an invader. There are various substances that can cause different type of allergy or allergic reactions like some foods, dust, plants, pollens, or medicines and these substances are called allergens.

Also check, Dry skin for babies

Why do allergies occur?

The reason for different type of allergy can be unkown. Inheritance can be one reason. If your close family member has allergies, you can be at higher risk of having them. There are also some substances that cause an allergic reaction. When the immune system fights with allergens thinking it will harm the body and it causes symptoms on the body which can range from mild to fatal at times. To defend the body, the immune system makes antibodies called immunoglobulin E (IgE) and these antibodies can cause certain cells to release chemicals into the bloodstream. The release of these chemicals is what causes the allergic reactions and it can affect eyes, nose, throat, lungs, skin and gastrointestinal tract.

Some type of allergy are seasonal which means that they occur at a specific time of the year (when pollen count is high) while other allergies can happen when a person comes in contact with an allergen.

In children, skin allergies are most common followed by food allergies and respiratory allergies.

Also check, Foods that help with Eczema

What are some of the common allergens?

How to diagnose allergies?

For skin allergies, your doctor will ask for the medical history of your child and family to identify a potential allergen. If required, the doctor might conduct a patch test or a skin prick test. In both these tests, a small amount of allergen is introduced in the skin to check for any allergic reaction. If diagnosed with a skin allergy, your pediatrician will prescribe an ointment or a gentle skin cleanser for your child’s skin allergy treatment.

If your child has cold-like symptoms which last for longer than a week or two or develops a cold at the same time every year, then your doctor might diagnose an allergy and prescribe some medications. Skin tests and blood tests are conducted to find the cause of an allergy.

To detect food allergies early in toddlers, paediatricians advise introducing one new food to the baby at a time. Maintain a food diary and note down the food along with the date when you first gave it to your child and note down any discomfort or allergies that the child developed.

5 Ways to detox festival binge eating

What is detoxification meaning and whY is DETOX AFTER FESTIVE SEASON IMPORTANT?

Festivals go hand-in-hand with sweets, fried and spicy foods in every culture. Round the year we often get excuses to indulge in delicacies in the celebration of festivals. The most exciting part of any festival is the scrumptious food, which varies across different festivals. Food is what makes every festival so memorable. During festive season, days often begins and ends with a sweet, delicately prepared at home with loads of patience and love. In addition, Food is what connects people of different regions and backgrounds. Even families unite after a long separation and build moments with taste-laden food and drinks. And it is a common culture across the world to invite and visit friends and family. Eventually, in the end, it all sums up to eating, laughing and more eating.

Soon, once the festival is over, we begin our search for detoxing our bodies of food-guilt, not love and laughter. People generally tend to (over) consume foods with high sugar content, spices and fat. More often than not, this leads to gastritis, indigestion, acidity and raised cholesterol levels, thereby creating a need to detox post festival. That is why detox after festive season is required.

Detoxification Meaning:

Detoxification means cleansing up your body while removing the impurities from blood. Toxins are the pollutants, synthetic chemicals, heavy metals which enter our body along with our regular food and affect our health negatively.

After-effects of Festival Binge Eating:

Gas and constipation:

This is the common problem people complain off after every festival. And the reason behind this is the consumption of oily, deep fried spicy food. The excess use of oil, sugar, and refine flour that is used to make verity of dishes during festivals leads to acid reflux, constipation and heartburn.

Weight gain:

Even health conscious people can’t stop themselves from having those tasty festival dishes, which are full of calories. Further, it results in weight gain and can cause health issues.  As a result, it become important to detox post festival delicacies. (What food can help increase healthy weight in kids?)

Harmful for gut health:

When there is excess of oil, starch or sugar in the diet, your digestive system can’t process it properly (Why?). So the sugar starts to ferment and begins feeding pathogenic bacteria like yeast.  Later it harms the healthy bacteria that live in your gut. And this can lead to conditions like small intestine bacterial overgrowth. Moreover, a high fat and sugar combined diet may damage the gut micro biome by increasing unhealthy bacteria and decreasing number of healthy one. That is why a detox post festival becomes necessary in such scenarios.

Acne:

High saturated fat food may result in acne by increasing inflammation and altering hormone levels. (How to fix acne in kids?)

Increase risk of diabetes:

Consuming festive food, which not only includes high fat food but, also high sugar levels (sweets and drinks), leads to high-calorie intake and sudden rise in blood sugar levels. This can be a trigger point for people with pre-diabetes developing diabetes.

Increase in cholesterol level:

Excess use of saturated or trans fat (hydrogenated vegetable oil) for making different dishes during festival season may lead to high cholesterol levels in your blood, which is harmful for your heart health and liver function. Liver is the main organ that breakdown fat in the bod. Excess of fat intake can put pressure on liver. (How to keep Liver safe?)

To detox post festival binge eating becomes essential for a healthy body. Drinking enough water and having high-fiber diet helps to get rid of waste and toxins from the body. Some of the best way to detox your body after binge are exercising, consuming probiotics (what are some easy probiotics?), adding some antioxidants in your diet (what are antioxidants?) and consuming foods that are easy to digest. Some food sources can really help to detox post festival.

WAYS TO DETOX:

Aloe Vera and turmeric:

Aloe Vera plant is water- dense. It is the best way to detox your body. This plant keeps the body hydrated and provides a way to flush out impurities. It is a rich source of antioxidants, which helps fight free-radicals (what are they?) and lowers oxidative stress on your body. The aloe Vera is proven to clean toxins from the liver. It also decreases irritation in the stomach and intestine. Turmeric is an extraordinary spice in terms of health benefit. It has anti-inflammation and anti-oxidant properties that fight inflammation and can contribute to healthy digestion. Mix a spoon of Aloe Vera gel (freshly obtained from leaf is preferred) with quarter spoon of turmeric in warm water. Enjoy this drink to detox post festival binge eating.

Apple cider vinegar:

Apple cider vinegar is fermented food which adds good bacteria to the gut. It is high in potassium, magnesium, calcium and other vitamins and minerals. It gives good dose of enzymes, supports healthy immune system, promotes pH (acidity) balance in the body, aids healthy digestion, helps in removing toxins from body. Add one table spoon of ACV to the warm water, for best results drink this in the morning empty stomach. (Easy way to make ACV jellies)

Chia seeds:

Chia seeds are high in fiber and essential fats (omega-3), which help to reduce inflammation and flush out toxins. It has high amount of fiber which reaches the large intestine and becomes food for the bacterias staying there, thereby promoting healthy intestinal flow, treating constipation, heartburn and other digestive disorders. Soak some chia seeds in a glass of water, drink this after an hour of soaking. (Some easy seeds rich in protein)

Lemon:

Lemon is the key ingredient in many detox drinks and one of the best ways to detox your body. It is packed with antioxidants and vitamin C, which is beneficial for skin and fight free-radicals. It has an alkaline effect on the body which helps restore the body’s pH balance and flush out toxins to cleanse the system. Start your day with a glass of warm water with a slice of lemon in it. It also aids in maintaining a healthy weight.

Garlic:

Garlic contains organo- sulfur compounds (OSCs), which make it the perfect detoxification supplement.  It is not only anti-viral, anti-bacterial and antibiotic but it also contains a chemical called allicin which promotes the production of white blood cells and helps fight against toxins. Selenium, a mineral present in garlic can cleanse the liver of toxins too. (How does this help with boils on the body?)

Ginger:

Ginger water mixed with lemon juice is also used to detox the body. As per numerous studies, ginger has been credited to fight infection and inflammation. Ginger root contains powerful compounds, including gingerols and shogoals, that help to inhibit inflammation and protect against cellular damage. They also tend to liver against toxins. Taking a little bit of ginger in tea or meals everyday can support overall health including a good flow of blood in the body. (How does ginger solve cough in kids?)

Health Benefits Of Panchamrit

panchamrit benefits

Let food be thy medicine and medicine thy food- Hippocrates

 Panchamrit

Panchamrit is a Sanskrit term made by combining two words- Panch (means five) and Amrit (means divine nectar of Gods, immortality). Moreover, Panchamrit benefits are many and it contains mainly these five ingredients -milk, curd, honey, mishri and ghee. In some regions, it is also known as Charanamrit (nectar from the feet of Gods).

Religious Significance:

In Hindu religion, it is considered very sacred and is used as an offering to God during pooja. And also used for Abhishek (religious bath of the divine). Finally, after the pooja, it is distributed as Prasad to the devotees. The usage of “Panchamrit” in Hindu rituals is considered as the oldest synbiotic food (a combination of both pre-biotic and pro-biotic) in the history of mankind. It is a concoction of five ingredients – Raw Cow’s Milk, Curd, Honey, Mishri (rock Sugar), and Ghee. And you can also add cardamom and basil to it.

According to Mahabharata, it was one of the valuable ingredients that emerged during the Samudra Manthan or Ksheera Sagar Manthan (churning the ocean of milk). Therefore, each one of the ingredients has a symbolic meaning to it. For example, milk symbolizes purity and piousness, honey stands for sweet speech and unity (as producing honey requires absolute dedication and cooperation), sugar represents sweetness and bliss, curd indicates prosperity and ghee represents strength and victory. To sum up, Panchamrit benefits our health in many ways.

Panchamrit BENEFITS FOR HEALTH:

  • Natural skin cleanser and helps to nourish skin cells and promotes natural glow
  • Enhances memory, grasping power, creative ability and brain development
  • Boosts health of mother and foetus during pregnancy
  • Keeps hairs healthy
  • Improves digestion
  • Strengthens bones
  • Builds immunity

Significance of each Ingredient:

Milk:

Raw cow’s milk carries super efficient antioxidants-Vitamin K and Beta Carotene which counter the free radicals (What are they?) in the body. Hence, it is the next best thing after mother’s milk. Moreover, Cow’s milk is also a rich source of calcium, proteins, vitamin B12.

Curd:

Curd is a provider of both bacteria (pro-biotic) as well as the food for the bacteria (pre-biotic). It has a cooling effect on body. Amino acids and enzymes in it help in digestion. It also provides protein and calcium.

Ghee:

Ghee carries antioxidants – vitamin K and beta-carotene which counter the free radicals in the body. It is the most treasured food which has healing properties.

Honey:

Honey carries the enzymes required to break down the food and aid absorption of minerals and vitamins in the body. It contains anti-oxidants, anti- bacterial and anti- microbial properties which helps in digestion, aids infections, clear complexion and makes skin smooth

Mishri (rock sugar):

It provides energy, helps in keeping the immunity high and aids digestion.  It also enhances other ingredients.

Basil and cardamom:

Basil is an anti-inflammatory food which aids in digestion by balancing the acid in the body. It is an elixir that helps detoxify the liver and a super source of iron too. Cardamom is quite an all rounder with powerful antioxidants.

However, there may be certain regional variations in ingredients. For example, most South Indians add raw bananas to the Panchamrit. Raw banana is a great source of good bacteria for the gut (pre-biotic).

In a nutshell, this simple sweet concoction is not just super tasty but also prepares our body to consume all sorts of fried food and sweets in large quantities. The free radical damage and disturbed digestion from eating and overeating heavy, oily and sweet food is countered by the intake of pre-biotic, pro-biotic, antioxidants and enzymes. It is a perfect example of how our traditional foods are backed by science to provide us maximum health benefits.

Happy Festivals and Cheers to Panchamrit!

Some common cough remedies at home for kids

As a parent, hearing your child cough may make you feel uncomfortable. Cough is one of the most common complaints for which parents bring their children to a doctor. Yet an occasional cough doesn’t always mean there is a problem. In fact coughing is a healthy and important reflex that helps protect the airways in the throat and chest. Children can cough several times a day or have coughing episodes lasting up to a couple of weeks if they have viral infections. However, coughing that lasts for more than 2-3 weeks is a matter of concern and a valid reason to visit your physician. Some cough remedies at home can also help to cure it at initial stage.

Coughing occurs when something other than air gets into the airway below the vocal cords. Because the airway prefers air only instead of anything else (like mucus), as soon as something gets into the lower airway, it is quickly expelled. Cough and sore throat is a problem that can strike kids any time of the year. However, chances increase during winters. In winters, the cold air can dry out the tissues in the throat and can cause severe irritation. So common cold prevention and treatment become key in winters. By taking some regular precautions and cough remedies at home we can cure It easily.

Understanding the different types of cough can help you know when to handle them at home using home remedies for cold for kids and when to call your doctor.

WHATSAPP for concerns like Speech Delay, Low Weight, Frequent Illness, Hyperactivity, Low Concentration, Weak Eyesight, Improper Sleep, Pigmentation, Pores, Face Marks, Fine Lines , Lactation etc.

Dry cough:

A dry cough refers to a cough that does not produce mucus. Kids may have a dry, hacking cough after inhaling a mild irritant, such as dust, smoke or powder. It also can be the result of a disorder, such as allergy.

Also check, How to treat an allergy?

Whooping cough:

Whooping cough is extremely contagious. It mainly affects babies younger than 6 months old who aren’t yet protected by immunization, and kids 11 to 18 whose immunity has started to fade. Whooping cough causes severe coughing spells, which can sometimes end in a whooping sound when the child breathes in. It takes 7 -10 days for symptoms to appear. They are usually mild at first and resemble those of a common cold with runny nose, nasal congestion, watery eyes and cough. After a week, signs and symptoms worsen. So common cold prevention and treatment is important for infants also.

Cough with wheezing:

Cough and wheezing are common when young children have cold and chest infection. Wheezing is a whistle sound made while breathing. Because a child’s airways are so small, any lower respiratory infection can cause wheezing in the child. Wheezing happens during exhalation, when something blocks or narrows the lower airway passage into the lungs. We can use some home remedies for cold for kids

Night time cough

Coughing at night can be caused by a variety of conditions. Some are short term and disappear while in some cases it can be long term. Coughing often becomes worse at night. When you are lying down on bed, mucus will start pooling in the back of your throat, which causes irritation. Another reason is acid reflux. Acid is an irritant to the throat, much like mucus, germs or dust. Frequent vomiting, especially after meals, choking, wheezing are contents of the reflux.

Cough with vomiting

Kids often cough so much that it triggers their gag reflex (contraction of throat when something touches area around tonsils), making them throw up. Also, a child who has cough with cold could vomit if lots of mucus drains into the stomach and causes nausea. That is why common cold prevention and treatment is important

HOME REMEDIES TO TREAT COUGH

Mint

Mint has a very strong odour and can be used as one of the home remedies for cold for kids, as it helps open up the airways and allows relaxed breathing. It contains menthol, which soothes the throat and acts as a decongestant, helping to break down mucus. Drinking warm mint tea (mint brewed in water) or by inhaling peppermint vapours from a steam bath can benefit (for older kids). Another option is to have chamomile flowers brewed in water (chamomile tea). It has the same effect on the child and also produces melatonin hormone for sleep. (Easy foods to make kids sleep) Mint could be one of the best cough remedies at home.

Carom seeds (Ajwain)

Carom seeds work as an expectorant (an agent that promotes the expulsion of mucus from respiratory tract). It acts as a decongestant and helps in mucus removal to clear the kid’s nasal passage and helps to breathe easily. Boiling water along with carom seeds and tulsi leaves and keeping it at a safe distance from the child in your supervision and helping the child to breathe it while sleeping or while active (for older kids), can help to keep cough in check and relieve chest congestion. This should best be done before sleeping as sleeping too helps heal and works as common cold prevention and treatment

Licorice (Mulethi)

The benefit of this is plenty. It’s antioxidant property helps to protect from any virus or bacteria that attacks the body or fights the same when these unwanted guests enter the body. However, this perennial herb can be used to get relief from dry cough as well. For using as one of the cold and cough remedies at home for kids with cold, mix a spoon of mulethi powder with a spoonful of honey in a glass of lukewarm water and make your kids take this twice a day to get relief.

Mixing ginger powder or freshly squeezed juice of ginger with honey and roasted Turmeric is a great cough syrup for kids.

Honey

Honey is the best out of all the home remedies for cold for kids. It alone may be an effective cough suppressant too. It can’t cure coughs, but honey is believed to act as a demulcent- a substance that coats the throat and soothes it so, it is adviced to use it for cough remedy. Honey is also considered a humectant that keeps moisture in place, which prevents the throat from getting dry. This especially helps with night time coughing resulting in peaceful sleep.

Flu to Cold: Are you feeding your kids right?

With every changing season, the biggest concern among parents around the globe is to prevent their kids from cold and flu. Children start to get cold after about six months of age when the immunity they received from their mom fades and they have to build up their own immunity.

Cold and flu season prevention become more important for kids less than seven years of age who have an immature immune system which makes them more susceptible to cold and flu viruses. Most of the kids have at least six to eight colds a year, which is likely to happen during fall and winter. Every time when kids get infected with a specific cold virus, their immune system develops antibodies, which help them to fight against it next time. But there are lots of different cold viruses, so it takes time to build an effective immune system.

Children catch cold, when a virus comes in contact with the lining of nose and throat. There are more than two hundred different viruses causing cold in children, but the Rhinovirus is the most common offender. The symptoms for cold include stuffy or runny nose and sneezing. However, flu symptoms are more severe than cold and include fever, headache, sore throat, congestion.

WHATSAPP for concerns like Speech Delay, Low Weight, Frequent Illness, Hyperactivity, Low Concentration, Weak Eyesight, Improper Sleep, Pigmentation, Pores, Face Marks, Fine Lines , Lactation etc.

Feedback from parents

Ways to get infected by a cold and flu:

Direct contact: by getting in contact with a person infected by cold virus. As cold is contagious; they can pass on the virus. It’s usually spread when an infected person has a cold blow or touches their nose and then touches someone or something else.

Indirect contact: by touching toys, doorknobs, books and other items that have been touched by an infected person.

Through air: if an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks, the virus can spread through droplets in the air and may enter your body through nose, mouth, eyes.

Precautions are better than cure. Some foods for cold and flu season:

Turmeric:

Due to its antibacterial and anti-viral properties turmeric is one of the best foods for cold and flu season, known to treat viral infections. Adding turmeric powder to a glass of warm milk can offer relief in the aching throat and runny nose.

Honey:

Honey contains antioxidants, anti-bacterial and anti-microbial properties which makes it best for cold and flu season prevention. It has been used traditionally for thousands of years in different Asian cultures to treat infections.

Also check, An easy honey recipe for kids

Carrot:

Beta- carotene in carrots converts into vitamin A which is key for keeping mucous membranes (inside nose and mouth) healthy. Vitamin A also benefits the immune system by preparing it to fight when a similar virus attacks next time. All these nutrients make it one of the best foods for cold and flu season.

Also check, How does Vitamin A help skin?

Ginger:

Ginger roots are used for centuries for health benefits in Asian cultures. Research shows that ginger has medicinal properties, both antiviral and antibacterial, that could help ease the symptoms of cold or sore throat so it’s good to use lots of ginger for cold and flu season prevention.

Also check, What are other Ayurvedic herbs that are good for kids?

Egg:

We all know eggs as one of the foods for cold and flu season. Eggs are packed with immunity boosting nutrients, with high amounts of vitamin D, which is vital in regulating and strengthening immunity. Vitamin D is present in every cell of the body, strengthening it and protecting it against viruses or bacteria attacking from the outside. A child who took a daily serving of vitamin D in winters were less likely to catch cold and flu as compared to those who did not.

Whole Grain:

Whole grains are high prebiotic fiber which has anti-inflammatory properties and increases the production of healthy bacteria in the gut. It works as the food for the bacteria living in the gut and increasing them in quantity, ensuring healthy gut health. Simply put, with lack of fiber, bacteria living in the gut don’t survive as they don’t get their food. This causes lowered immunity.

Also check, How does this help with acne?

Apple:

This fruit contains phytochemical antioxidants which helps in boosting immunity. Apples are also full of calories which come from a good mix of carbs, vitamins and minerals which keeps your child energized to fight the infection without losing much of weight. One apple with skin has 5g of fiber which ensures healthy gut health also.

Spinach:

It is a super food that is great for your overall health not only it is packed with digestion regulating prebiotic fiber but it also contains vitamin C, a powerful nutrient that can help in preventing common cold and reduce symptoms of sickness.

Also check, An easy spinach recipe for kids

Blueberries:

Blueberries are filled with antioxidants that can help in treating and preventing cold and flu. It contains flavonoids, a type of antioxidants that can help reduce damage to cells and boost the immune system.

Apart from offering plenty of fluids to keep the child hydrated, foods for cold and flu season should be rich in antioxidants like Vitamin C (what is the easiest source?), Vitamin E (what are some easy sources?) and zinc, which help to fight against cold and flu. Zinc forms a protective layer on the cells of the body and shields against invading bacteria and viruses. It is popularly found in diaper rash creams or sunscreens for the same reason. There are certain foods that you should avoid including in your kids diet if he/she has cold and flu such as sugary foods and oily foods which are refined and processed as they don’t contribute any nutrition to cure the infection. Rather they can work adversely (How?). So it’s better to take cold and flu season prevention.

Home Remedy for Cold and Flu for Small Kids:

  • Heat mustard oil and burn garlic in it. Once cool, apply this oil on the baby’s head, palm, feet base, chest and back. Leave it applied and let the child sleep. It will help settle the cold and cough both. Also, any body ache the child has will be resolved.
  • Take1 to 2 tbs of lukewarm mustard oil and mix half a teaspoon of rock salt. Massage this oil gently on the baby’s chest and back, cover with cotton cloth. The warmth of mustered oil help in relieving congestion.
  • Mix a spoon of mulethi (Licorice) powder with a spoonful of honey in a glass of lukewarm water and make your kids take this twice a day to get relief.
  • Take out some ginger juice by grating it and mix it with some honey. Give this mixture to your child above 1 year twice a day for quick relief.
  • squeeze some lemon juice in a glass of warm water and add honey for taste. This remedy is for older kids above one year.
  • Add turmeric powder to a glass of warm milk and make your kid have it every night. This provides instant relief for an aching throat and runny nose.

Cold and flu season prevention:

  • Hand wash – make your kids wash their hands on a regular basis especially when they are in contact with someone infected or sanitize their hands.
  • Teach your kids to cover their nose and mouth while sneezing or coughing.
  • Avoid sharing cups, utensils, toys and towels with others.
