10 Proven Health Benefits Of Chamomile

health benefits of chamomile

Chamomile is one of the oldest medicinal herbs known to mankind. There are two common varieties: German Chamomile and Roman Chamomile, both of which are native to certain parts of Europe. Numerous products are made from the essential oil of chamomile flowers, which you can use in the form of oils or creams, eat in the form of herbs and teas, and also inhale. You can also find Chamomile in capsule form as a supplement. There are many health benefits of Chamomile.

The most common form of chamomile is tea, which is made from the dried flowers of the chamomile plant. It’s so common that more than a million people drink chamomile tea, often in the evenings before bed.

WHATSAPP for concerns like Speech Delay, Low Weight, Frequent Illness, Hyperactivity, Low Concentration, Weak Eyesight, Improper Sleep, Pigmentation, Pores, Face Marks, Fine Lines , Lactation etc.

Composition of Chamomile:

Long list of health benefits of Chamomile comes from the more than 120 chemical constituents it contains, which include:

  • 28 terpenoids
  • 36 flavanoids
  • 52 additional compounds

Many of these compounds are pharmacologically active, meaning they contain ingredients that are actively effective in treating a concern, much like the main ingredient in a medication. For example, α-bisabolol and cyclic ethers are antimicrobial, meaning they can fight against microbes like bacteria, while chamazulene and α-bisabolol are antiseptic, which means they can prevent the growth of microorganisms or help destroy them.

Health Benefits of Chamomile:

1.Promotes Sound Sleep:

Chamomile is one of the most widely used alternative therapies for promoting sleep and treating insomnia. Chamomile’s restful properties don’t work like a pharmaceutical drug. That is, they don’t force you to sleep. Rather, they help to relieve your physical and emotional tension, allowing you to drift off to sleep naturally. Aiding sleep is one of the most important health benefits of Chamomile.

A 2017 study of 77 older people in nursing homes found a significant improvement in sleep quality when participants were given 400-milligram capsules of chamomile twice a day for four weeks, compared to those who didn’t receive any treatment. Similarly, when researchers in a 2016 study randomized 40 women who had just given birth to drinking one cup of chamomile tea a day for two weeks, they scored significantly lower compared to a control group that didn’t drink the tea when it came to both sleep problems and symptoms of depression. (Other foods to promote sleep?)

2.Anxiety and seizure:

Research has shown chamomile to have meaningful benefits when it comes to reducing anxiety. The Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database, which rates the effectiveness of natural remedies based on scientific evidence, says chamomile is possibly effective for anxiety. Chamomile is used in the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). The recent results from the controlled clinical trial on chamomile extract for GAD suggests that it may have modest anxiolytic activity in patients with mild to moderate GAD. Check here. There is also some limited evidence to support its use in the treatment of ADHD.

Study indicates that the extracts of chamomile (M. recutita) possess suitable effects on seizure induced by picrotoxin, although more experiments are needed in this field. (Causes & remedies for Seizure?)

3.Relieves Pain:

Chamomile acts as a natural pain reliever as it eases minor pains and aches in the body. It can also provide relief from any tension or inflammation present in the body.

4.Improves digestion:

Another important health benefits of chamomile is that it improves digestion. It is also very effective in soothing and healing stomach ulcers. Chamomile helps to calm overactive sensations and cramping in the bowels and promote better digestion, relieve constipation and help with gas pain and vomiting.

An animal study from 2014 showed that chamomile extracts have strong antidiarrheal and antioxidant properties when given to rats in a dose-dependent manner against castor oil-induced diarrhea and intestinal fluid accumulation.

5.Diabetes:

Chamomile, as a rich source of phenolic compounds and terpenoids, seems to be an effective approach in the management of chronic conditions such as diabetes mellitus. A study was conducted to evaluate evidence from animal and human studies of the effects of chamomile on metabolic risk markers and complications of diabetes mellitus. The results of these studies demonstrated a significant effect of chamomile administration on metabolic profiles. Four of the five studies appraising the impact of chamomile on lipid profiles showed that it improved dyslipidemia. Six studies showed that chamomile markedly decreased oxidative stress particularly malondialdehyde. (How some foods can help to manage diabetes in kids?)

6.Wound Healing:

Topically applied chamomile may be able to speed wound healing. Studies show that substances in chamomile can kill viruses and bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus, the cause of staph infections, reduce inflammation, and prevent and treat the growth of ulcers.

One preliminary study that compared chamomile and corticosteroids for treating ulcers in test tubes and animals concluded that chamomile promotes faster wound healing: Animals treated with chamomile exhibited complete wound healing nine days before animals treated with corticosteroids. Another study suggested that antibacterial and wound healing activities of Chamomile nobile ointment were more than tetracycline ointment significantly. (Some home remedies for wounds?)

7.Improves Oral Health:

Some preliminary studies that evaluated the efficacy of chamomile mouthwash found that it significantly reduced gingivitis and plaque in comparison to controls, probably because of its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities. (How to take care of oral health of kids?)

8.Treats Eczema:

Chamomile is often used to treat mild skin irritations, including sunburn, rashes, sores, and even eye inflammations, but its value in treating these conditions needs more research.

Topical applications of chamomile have been shown to be moderately effective in the treatment of eczema. In one partially double-blind trial carried out as a half-side comparison, a commercial chamomile cream showed a mild superiority towards a low-dose .5 percent hydrocortisone and a marginal difference compared to the placebo. (How these foods can help in Eczema?)

9. Natural Relief from Allergies:

Another important health benefits of chamomile is that it helps to treat allergies. Chamomile naturally reduces histamine and excess mucous production in the body thereby relieving the symptoms of allergy. It also helps to detoxify the liver which reduces the body’s overreaction to environmental irritants and allergens.

10. Anti Cancer Properties:

Chamomile helps to fight against various types of cancers such as skin, thyroid, breast, ovarian and prostate. According to a study, consuming chamomile tea regularly can reduce the risk of thyroid cancer by 80%. It also helps to prevent and heal mouth sores caused as a result of chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

Is It Safe For Kids?

Chamomile is a kids friendly herb as it has a pleasant taste and is gentle in nature. Many parents are skeptical about chamomile, but, if given in pure form, it is very beneficial for kids.

Puberty in girls

5 tips and foods to manage PCOS in Teens and Adults

PCOS in Teens

Just like hormonal changes, PCOS in teens and adults ( a type of hormonal imbalance) are part of normal puberty and quite common these days. Actually acne and irregular periods are part of pubertal development. So when does it become PCOS?

Lots of girls who are misdiagnosed with PCOS are actually just in normal puberty, and later go on to have completely normal hormones. On the other hand, many girls or women still go undiagnosed, even with clear signs, as there’s so much confusion as to what is normal. With PCOS, it’s better to intervene earlier because this can make a huge difference in their overall health for life. In this article, you will understand about PCOS, its causes, symptoms, signs and tips to manage PCOS in Teens and Adults.

WHATSAPP for concerns like Speech Delay, Low Weight, Frequent Illness, Hyperactivity, Low Concentration, Weak Eyesight, Improper Sleep, Pigmentation, Pores, Face Marks, Fine Lines , Lactation etc.

What Is PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome)?

PCOS, which stands for polycystic ovary syndrome, is a common health problem that can affect teen girls and young women. It can cause irregular menstrual periods, make periods heavier, or even make periods stop. It can also cause a girl to have excess facial hair and acne.

What Causes Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)?

Doctors can’t say for sure what causes it, but PCOS seems to be related to an imbalance in a girl’s or woman hormones . For most women, it’s probably a combination of factors, including the genes you inherit from your family. For example, women with PCOS are more likely to have a mother or sister with PCOS.

PCOS is usually caused when in addition to estrogen (the main female hormone), women also make small amounts of testosterone (the main male hormone). In PCOS, girls and women make a little extra testosterone than normal. Research also suggests that the body might make too much insulin, signaling the ovaries to release extra male hormones. The higher amounts of these male hormones can interfere with egg development and release. Due to the presence of extra male hormones (testosterone), sometimes cysts (little sacs filled with liquid) develop, instead of the eggs maturing. This results in the cysts build up in the ovaries instead of an egg being released during ovulation as in a normal period. Eventually, these Polycystic ovaries can become enlarged. Girls/women with PCOS might not be ovulating or releasing an egg each month.

What are the Signs and Symptoms of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)?

The signs and symptoms of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) are as mentioned below:

  • Irregular menstrual periods, which means having your period more than once a month or every few months
  • Missed periods
  • Very heavy or very light periods
  • Unwanted hair growth on your face, chest, back, hands, upper arms and legs, or around your nipples (a condition called hirsutism)
  • Acne or clogged pores
  • Thinner hair on your head (alopecia)
  • Patches of dark, thickened skin on your neck, armpits, or between your breasts (called acanthosis nigricans), which is a sign of insulin resistance
  • Weight gain or obesity

Teens and women with PCOS also are at higher risk for type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and/or high cholesterol.

Girls who show signs of puberty early, such as developing underarm or pubic hair before age 8, may be at greater risk for PCOS later on.

What Problems Can Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) Cause?

Girls/women with PCOS are more likely to:

  • Face infertility or have difficulty conceiving. However, this is treatable when a woman decides she wants to become pregnant.
  • Have excessive hair growth on places such as the face, chest, or belly
  • Get acne or have their acne get worse
  • Gain weight or difficulty maintaining a normal weight
  • Develop diabetes, heart disease, or high blood pressure
  • Have obstructive sleep apnea Which foods help to manage sleep issues?

How Is Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) Diagnosed?

If your doctor thinks you might have PCOS, he or she may refer you to a gynecologist or an endocrinologist for a diagnosis. To make the diagnosis, the doctor might  perform any or some of the following actions:

  • Ask about your concerns and symptoms, your past health, your family’s health, any medicines you’re taking, any allergies you have, and other issues.
  • Ask you lots of questions specifically about your period and its regularity.
  • Do a physical exam, which includes checking your weight, and looking for physical signs such as acne, hair growth, and darkened skin.
  • Do a gynecologic exam to rule out other possible causes of your symptoms.
  • Order blood tests to diagnose PCOS and or to see if the symptoms are caused by other conditions, such as thyroid or other ovarian or gland problems.
  • Order a pelvic ultrasound (a safe, painless test that uses sound waves to make images of the pelvis) to check your ovaries for cysts or other problems.

How THeSE 5 TIPS AND FOODS CAN HELP TO TREAT PCOS in Teens or adults?

There’s no cure for PCOS, but there are several ways to treat and manage it.

1. Diet and Exercise

If a girl/woman is overweight or obese, a doctor will recommend lifestyle changes. Weight loss can be very effective in easing many of the health conditions associated with PCOS, such as high blood pressure and diabetes.

Your doctor or a registered dietitian can look at your food intake and your exercise and activity to create a weight-loss program for you. Exercise is very important to improve your body’s sensitivity to insulin and prevent progression to diabetes.

2. Medicines

Sometimes doctors prescribe medicines to treat PCOS.

  • Birth control pills to help control androgen levels in the body and regulate menstrual cycle. They may also help control acne and excessive hair growth in some girls, but they don’t work for everyone.
  • Antiandrogens also are sometimes used to treat PCOS in teens. These medicines counter the effects of excess androgens and help clear up skin and hair growth problems.
  • A diabetes medicine called metformin can lower insulin levels. In some girls with PCOS, it can help control ovulation and androgen levels which can make menstrual cycles more regular.

Medicines should always be combined with the recommended lifestyle changes.

3. Dietary changes to maintain hormone balance in body

FOODS TO AVOID:

Refined sugar and carbs can cause substantial hormonal imbalance. Sugar causes the body’s most critical hormone, Insulin, to malfunction. Insulin interacts with a number of other hormones in the body, including estrogen and testosterone. Furthermore, it depletes vitamin B levels in the body, leading to anxiety and sadness over time.

PRESERVATIVES:

Most of the packaged food companies are adding artificial preservatives to delay spoilage and contamination in foods.  To clearly define, artificial preservatives such as nitrates, benzoates, sulphites, sorbates, parabens, formaldehyde, BHT, BHA and several others can cause serious health hazards. Hormone imbalances, hypersensitivity, allergy, asthma, hyperactivity, neurological damage are some hazards.

REFINED OIL:

Broadly speaking, all natural and useful elements are removed from oil during the refining process. This is bad for your hormones, digestive system, and respiratory system, and ultimately has a negative impact on your general health.

10 amazing health benefits to include honey in kids diet

Benefits to honey

Honey is a delicious and healthy natural ingredient that everyone knows about. It is one of nature’s most wonderful gifts, and it can benefit a child’s health in a number of ways. It is a natural sweetener, thus it is preferable to refined sugar. Most parents have switched from refined sugar to honey and jaggery as alternatives. It has a good nutritional value, as well as a high amount of phytochemicals and flavonoids. It has long been utilised in Ayurvedic medicine for a variety of purposes.

WHATSAPP for concerns like Speech Delay, Low Weight, Frequent Illness, Hyperactivity, Low Concentration, Weak Eyesight, Improper Sleep, Pigmentation, Pores, Face Marks, Fine Lines , Lactation etc.

When can I give honey to the baby?

This is one of the most frequently asked questions by parents to their paediatricians. Honey has excellent therapeutic properties that can really help us, however, it is not recommended for newborns under the age of one year. It is, of course, natural and beneficial, but your baby is not yet ready for it. This is to prevent infant botulism, a disease that can be caused in children under the age of one year consuming honey.
Clostridium botulinum, a spore-forming bacteria found in honey, can proliferate in the intestine. Because newborns have an immature digestive system that cannot fight off clostridium spores, the bacteria releases toxins that might irritate the little one’s gut. However, is safe for children over the age of one since their digestive systems are mature enough to eliminate bacteria from the body.

Honey nutritional value:

It provides numerous health benefits as well as a high nutritional value. It also has trace levels of vitamins and minerals.

Health benefits of honey for kids

Some of the amazing health benefits to include honey in a kid’s diet for growth and development are:

1. Serves as an excellent nutrient storehouse

Honey’s nutritive value is remarkable, as it contains the majority of vital nutrients. Because children are fussy eaters, they often skip out on many of these nutrients, which honey might help to fill. Honey is high in calcium, magnesium, manganese, potassium, phosphorous, zinc, niacin, and riboflavin, all of which aid in the prevention of nutritional deficiencies. (7 health foods for kid’s daily nutrition)

2. Helps in digestion

Honey is an excellent food for boosting digestion in children and treating digestive problems. It is a good prebiotic that aids in the maintenance of healthy gut flora. It also aids in the treatment of constipation and speeds up the process of digestion. In addition to preventing stomach ulcers, honey can help with indigestion, bloating, and flatulence.

3. Treats sore throat/ cough

One of the most common honey benefits for health is – its cure for sore throat /cough. It has been used in Ayurveda and other natural therapies to treat a sore throat in various forms. Honey is antimicrobial in nature and can help soothe a dry, sore throat. It coats the throat and helps sick children sleep easier, especially if they have a nighttime cough. (7 foods to boost immunity in kids)

4. Relieves constipation and diarrhea

Honey can aid with constipation and improve digestive function, but it can also be used as a home treatment for diarrhea. Honey has been shown in studies to improve the recovery process by delaying bowel movements. It’s also a more appealing alternative for kids. (Foods rich in fibre to treat constipation)

5. Relieves gastric reflux

Honey can be used to relieve acid reflux symptoms in children. Honey helps to treat this problem by lining the oesophagus and stomach wall. This limits the upward flow of food and stomach fluid, providing relaxation.

6. Helps in healing

Honey is well-known for its healing properties. It is used to treat lesions, bug bites, burns, boils, and sores due to its antibacterial and wound-healing characteristics. In kids, a mixture of honey, and olive oil may aid in the treatment of damaged skin and disorders such as psoriasis or atopic dermatitis.

7. Heals mouth ulcers

Mouth ulcers can be extremely painful, especially in children. Applying little honey mixed with turmeric on the mouth ulcer helps in healing faster.

8. Heals toothaches

When you have a bad toothache, honey is an excellent pain reliever. Honey, combined with a pinch of cinnamon, is an effective toothache remedy. Make a paste with one teaspoon of cinnamon and 2-3 teaspoons of honey and apply it immediately to the painful teeth. (Home remedies for tooth decay)

9. Alleviates muscle pain

Honey can aid kids with muscle pain and even growing pains. Drinking a glass of warm water with a teaspoon of honey will help greatly.

10. Treats asthma

Honey can aid children with asthma, especially if they experience symptoms in the middle of the night. It has the ability to relieve congestion and allows for easier breathing.

Honey use for colds and coughs in kids:

It has antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties, which is why it is used as a natural cold and cough relief. Giving pasteurized honey before sleep provides some relief from cough and cold symptoms in children over the age of one year. (Home remedies and foods for cough and cold )

Honey is used in various ways, especially during sickness. Adding honey to warm water with a pinch of tulsi has proven to be effective, and it is also the most usual method of use. This combination will help the child’s throat feel better, boosts immunity while also increasing his or her metabolism.

How much honey can my child consume?

Avoid giving honey to children below one year of age. For, children with the age of

  • 1- 2 years: 2 tsp honey
  • 3- 6 years: 2 ½ tsp honey
  • Above 6 years : 3 tsp honey

Ways to include honey in your child’s diet :

Honey should be progressively introduced into a child’s diet. This will allow you to check for any potential allergic reactions. However, you can add honey to milk, spread it on bread, drizzle on pancakes and can use it as an alternative to refined sugar in baked goods.

Follow these precautions while giving honey to your child

Here are few things you can keep in mind while giving honey to your child.

  • Honey should not be given to children in excess. It is high in calories and contains free sugars like fructose, which can lead to unwanted weight gain, dental caries, and gastric issues.
  • Check the manufacturing date and ingredients listed on the label.
  • Do not leave it open without a lid, as it may get contaminated by insects and dust.
  • Store the honey bottle in a cool place.
  • Honey can sometimes lead to breathing difficulty in children caused due to allergic reactions. So, if you identify any such problem, it is better to reach out to your pediatrician immediately.

Raw honey or processed honey: which is better?

Raw honey has nutrients in its natural state, but it also includes natural poisons which can induce honey poisoning showing symptoms such as low blood pressure, nausea, and vomiting. When honey is processed, the toxins are diluted and may not have a negative impact on the body. Honey that has been processed is also devoid of pollen grains and dust particles. This implies that processed honey has fewer hazards than raw honey, but raw honey has a higher nutritional value than processed honey.

Honey contains nutrients such as vitamins and minerals that are often lacking in simple sugar, making it a healthier alternative to refined sugar. Remember to gradually introduce honey so that your child gets familiar with the flavour and their body adjusts to the new dietary item. Once your child has developed a taste for honey, you may incorporate it into his or her balanced diet to make it more healthy.

hormonal imbalance

Magnesium to control hormonal imbalance
