8 Amazing Health Benefits of Ragi: A super food

health benefits of Ragi

You must have heard about the health benefits of Ragi from elders. Ragi, an ultimate superfood is also known as finger millet or nachni. In many parts of South India, ragi is a common staple food item.

Since ancient times, Ragi has been overshadowed by other cereal crops such as rice and wheat in India’s food and nutrition landscape despite being a highly prized healthy grain in ancient agricultural systems dating back over 2000 years. Fortunately, Ragi has made a huge comeback in the last three to four decades because of the extensive research and the UN FAO’s push to include millets in the daily diet to combat malnutrition and a variety of other prevalent diseases.

Since Ragi is high in protein, calcium, iron and amino acids, it is a “Super food”. It is the most commonly used millet for making porridges for babies and infants. Let’s take a closer look at the health benefits of Ragi.

Health benefits of Ragi:

The benefits of Ragi for health are highlighted below:

1. Great source of protein and fiber:

100 grams of Whole Ragi Flour gives 7.29 grams of protein and 16.56 grams of fiber. That is why, it serves as an excellent source of protein for vegetarians. Due to its high fiber content, it prevents overeating and keeps you full for a longer time, which aids in weight loss. The insoluble fiber present in Ragi helps in easy movement of foods in the stomach and adds water into the stool, hence aiding easy digestion and relieving constipation. (Foods for constipation in kids)

2. Calcium rich – promotes healthy bones and teeth:

When compared to other grains, ragi flour is one of the greatest non-dairy calcium sources. Calcium is essential for building strong bones and teeth, as well as for the prevention of a bone-weakening condition called osteoporosis. The sprouting process can increase the calcium content in Ragi by 20 percent. In addition, sprouting reduces the anti-nutritional factors and helps in better absorption of calcium. Hence, nothing beats Ragi when it comes to promoting bone growth in children and adults. (Benefits of calcium in kids)

3. Improves Red blood cells production – PreventS Anemia:

Naturally rich in iron, ragi benefits those with low hemoglobin levels. Also, the vitamin B1 in it helps in the synthesis of red blood cells and generates ATP, which is used by our bodies for energy. Ragi, when sprouted, has significant levels of vitamin C, which improves iron absorption. (Foods rich in iron)

4. Adds great benefit for diabetes:

It is the major benefit of ragi for health. Its higher fibre content lessens the cravings for food. When compared to wheat flour, ragi flour produces a far lower spike in sugar levels. Moreover, ragi is high in magnesium, which helps to improve insulin sensitivity by reducing insulin resistance. When our magnesium levels are too low, the pancreas does not produce enough insulin to keep our blood sugar under control.

5. gluten-free:

Ragi is a must-have for anyone on a gluten-free diet or suffering from celiac disease. For chapatis, dosas and some sweets, ragi can readily replace wheat because it is gluten-free. (A guide to a Gluten free diet for kids)

6. Rich in Antioxidants:

Other health benefits of ragi include its antioxidant property. Ragi is rich in antioxidants which prevents oxidation and fights against infections. Also, being a  rich source of amino acids, it aids the body’s natural ability to relax. You can efficiently combat depression, headaches and insomnia, as well as anxiety and stress, by consuming ragi. (Why do we need antioxidants)

7. great pick for the little ones and new moms:

The health benefits of ragi makes it a great choice for infants and new moms. As well as aiding with their digestion, it also strengthens their bones and promotes their overall growth. Ragi is great for stimulating milk production and balancing hormonal processes in pregnant women and young moms due to its high iron and calcium content.

8. Promotes healthy skin:

Ragi is a miracle worker when it comes to keeping youthful skin. As a result of the essential amino acids Methionine and Lysine and vitamins such as Vitamin B3, the skin tissues are less susceptible to wrinkles and aging.

How to get the benefits of ragi malt for your baby at home?

The benefits of ragi malt has created interest for a lot of parents in learning how to make ragi malt at home. You can prepare ragi malt for babies in one of two ways.

  • Traditionally, ragi grains are milked and dried before being ground into a thin powder. This method is time-consuming and tedious.
  • The alternative option is to powder the whole ragi. It is always a good idea to sprout the ragi and prepare a malt. Iron, calcium, vitamins, and minerals are all more abundant in sprouted ragi malt. Few tips to be taken care of while feeding your child:

  1. It is important that you should not focus on the amount of food your 2-year-old infant consumes. It varies among the children.
  2. Do not include artificial supplements in your child’s diet.
  3. Your child’s eating habits should not be rewarded or punished as this might lead to a negative attitude towards food.
  4. While eating, do not allow your kid to watch his favorite cartoon on television. He/ she has to concentrate on the meal.
  5. Make sure you don’t force-feed your child. (How food format helps to feed nutrition to kids?)

Many people believe that eating nutritious food that is fresh and free of preservatives requires too much work, but with the proper motivation, it can become a habit rather than a burden! Food should be simple and easy on the stomach:

The foods should be easy to chew and digest. In addition to this, avoid providing bigger pieces of food that may result in choking.

Ensure the food is cool before serving:

Do not feed foods that are hot to babies. Always check the temperature before feeding.

Avoid – excess salt, spices, sugar:

Adding too much salt and sugar can be heavy to process and causes harm to the immature kidneys. Also, too many spices can cause irritation in a baby’s digestive system.

Keep an eye on the child, if they are self feeding:

Babies learn to self-feed at this phase, so make sure they are under supervision. Do not just hand over the food and engage in your daily chores, instead teach them how to eat to prevent choking of food.

6 Month Baby Food Chart

6 month baby food chart

Are you not excited to see your little one tapping into his/her 6th month? Congratulations – he/she is ready to start with solid foods. But, keep in mind that breast milk or formula still remains to be the primary source of nutrient to the baby until 1 year or more. (Growth and development of 6 months old baby?)

How do you decide your baby is ready for solids?

Based on the physical development of the baby, the solids are introduced. Firstly, proper development of digestive enzymes is required. The digestive enzymes in the stomach develop between 4 to 6 months and it aids in digestion. Early introduction of solids before proper development of digestive enzymes leads to more digestive problems and food allergies. Secondly, good head and neck control is required to easily accept solids, chew and swallow them. In addition to this, you can introduce solids when your child shows interest in food or is still hungry after being breastfed or formula fed. (Read more about introducing solids to baby)

What are the best foods for a 6 month old baby?

The foods commonly used in the diet for a 6 month baby includes fruits and vegetable puree, cereal / pulses porridge, vegetable/ pulses soup, cerelac for 6 month baby etc.

  • Fruits puree: Fruits such as apples, pear, banana, avocado, papaya and peaches should be steamed, mashed or pureed before feeding to the baby.
  • Vegetable puree: It is prepared by steaming or boiling vegetables with water. The commonly used vegetables are sweet potatoes, carrots, potatoes, broccoli, tapioca, sweet pumpkins etc.
  • Pulses and vegetable soup: The stock of pulses such as moong dal and vegetables such as carrot, sweet pumpkin can be prepared by boiling in water. This stock serves as soup for babies.
  • Mung bean porridge: Mung bean being a great source of protein is the best choice for the baby introduced to solids. Firstly, begin with mung bean soup and slowly start with mung bean porridge. It is advisable to soak, sprout and cook the beans since it makes digestion easier in babies.
  • Rice porridge: Rice porridge is prepared with broken rice and breast milk or formula milk. It is a good source of carbohydrates and vitamins for babies.
  • Cereal porridge: A single or variety of cereals like wheat, barley, oats and millets can be used for the preparation of porridge. The cereal can be dried, powdered and used for porridge.
  • Cerelac for 6 month baby: Homemade or commercially available cerelac can be fed to babies. Boil clean drinking water for 5 minutes. Allow it to cool and add 3-4 spoons of cerelac, mix well until smooth and serve.
  • Herbs: You can add a pinch of herbs like cinnamon, nutmeg, cumin, mint, turmeric etc. to the baby’s food to introduce new flavors and build healthy eating habits. The herbs also serve nutritional benefits.

Important tips for starting solids for baby:

Since the introduction of solids to babies is challenging task to their parents, it is very important to plan well before they start. You can consult your pediatrician to check if your baby is ready for solids. And, you can also prepare a 6 month baby food chart with the best foods you plan to try with.

  • Start with a single fruit, vegetable or cereal. Do not try combinations of foods at first. Always go with mashed fruit first.
  • Stick to the 3-day rule. Feed the same food for the first three days and observe the reactions before starting a different one. This helps in finding the culprit foods that cause allergic reactions in your babies.
  • After 3 days, along with mashed fruit, start vegetable soup or pulse soup, later add porridge to the meal.
  • Always try new foods for breakfast or lunch. Since this helps in tacking any allergic reactions caused.
  • Avoid finger foods or foods with lumps for babies of 6 month old as they may cause gagging and choking.
  • Initially, start with a tablespoon of single food and gradually increase it to 3-4 tablespoons or more.
  • Always choose a calm and peaceful environment while feeding your baby.
  • Avoid distractions while feeding such as watching tv, using electronic gadgets – mobile or tablet.
  • Introduce foods with different flavors, texture and taste, as these draw the babies likeness towards the food.
  • Always prepare and store baby foods in clean and sterilized steel or glass containers and avoid containers made up of plastic.
  • Use steel cups to introduce water rather than a feeding bottle to bring out transition in growing babies.

6 month baby food chart:

You can design a meal plan or food chart for your baby and follow it. Since milk is still the prime source of nutrition to the babies, introduced solids between the milk feeds. Refer to the below food chart for 4 weeks to get an idea on how to plan the meals for baby. You can choose more recipes from here and replace or add as per your taste and preference. (Which is the best milk for baby?)

Week1

Similarly, you can personalize a 6 month baby food chart based on your baby’s choices and follow it. You can also try different combinations of food that suits your baby. Don’t forget to give enough water after every solids introduced. In the first week, start with 1 tablespoon of single food and gradually increase it to 3-4 tablespoons. In the following week, you can gradually increase the solids being fed. Avoid trying new foods in the evening. And it takes time for your baby to adapt to this meal plan, so stay calm and patient rather than forcing the feed to the baby. (Is your child lactose intolerant?)

How to identify if your baby has an allergy to a particular food?

The child develops following symptoms, if he/ she has an allergy to a particular food:

What are the different types of Food Allergies in Children?

Don’t panic!! Follow this, if your baby is allergic to a particular food.

Always follow the 3 day rule, while introducing a new food to your baby. If the baby shows above symptoms to any food, stop it immediately and reintroduce them later. Also, keep a track in the 6 month baby food chart with your baby’s favorite foods and of those causing allergies. If symptoms persist for a longer time, consult a doctor immediately.

feeding schedule

Different type of food allergies in kids

type of food allergies

Are you worried about food allergies in kids? As a parent, it is necessary that you are aware of the culprit foods that cause allergic reactions. And also replace them with healthy and nutritious choices. Firstly, let us understand what is food allergy and what are the common type of food allergies that kids face.

What is food allergy?

Food allergy is an abnormal/adverse reaction that takes place in the body after the ingestion of certain foods. According to the National Health Survey conducted in 2016, around 6% of children have food allergies. In some cases, they also cause severe and life-threatening reactions. Mostly, parents are not aware of the food allergy in their kids until they get a reaction after giving the food for the first time. Hence, it is really important for every parent to know about the different type of food allergies and their symptoms. (Introducing solids to babies?)

TYPE OF FOOD ALLERGIES COMMONLY FOUND in kids:

Culprit foods that cause different type of food allergies in kids are as follows:

  • Milk
  • Eggs
  • Peanuts
  • Tree nuts such as almonds, pistachios, hazelnuts, walnuts, cashews
  • Fish and shellfish
  • Soy
  • Wheat

Milk Allergy:

The most commonly occurring food allergy in kids is milk allergy. Children below 3 years of age are more allergic to milk than other age groups. The milk proteins i.e. casein and whey proteins present in milk cause milk allergy. If the children are allergic to cow’s milk, they may also have allergic reactions to milk from other animals like sheep, goats. However, milk allergy is not similar to lactose intolerance. Moreover, children are most likely to overcome milk allergy by the age of 16, which is not the same as lactose intolerance. (Which milk is good for kids?)

Egg allergy:

Children develop allergic reactions to an egg when their immune system sensitizes the proteins in egg whites or yolks. Children with egg allergy are allergic to either egg white or yolk or sometimes both. Since the egg is used in the preparation of many foods such as bakery products, salad dressings, ice cream, care should be taken to eliminate these foods completely from the diet. (What are the other source of protein rich foods?)

Peanut and tree nut allergy

The peanut and tree nut allergy are always confusing. Peanut belongs to the legume family as that of soybeans, peas while tree nut do not. Kids allergic to peanuts may also be allergic to at least one of the tree nuts.  Therefore, giving candies, cereals and, baked goods containing peanut and tree nuts to kids is not advisable.

Fish and shellfish allergy:

Fish and shellfish allergy are not as common as the other allergies in kids. A shellfish allergy is caused when body attacks proteins from the crustacean and mollusk families of fish, commonly known as shellfish. In addition, they can cause a serious and potentially fatal allergic reaction with symptoms like vomiting and diarrhea.

Wheat allergy:

Wheat allergy is one of the type of food allergies which occurs as an allergic response to any of the proteins found in wheat. It affects mostly children but they usually outgrow this allergy by the time they reach ten years of age. It is known to be acquired from parents (i.e. if a parent is allergic to wheat, the child may also be allergic). Wheat allergy is different from gluten sensitivity or celiac disease.

Soy allergy:

Soybean, a member of the legume family causes allergy in young children below 3 years of age. Soy allergies are triggered by a protein found in soybeans. However, almost 70% of the children overcome this allergy when they reach adulthood.

What are the symptoms TO food allergIES?

When a particular food that is allergic is ingested into the body, it is considered a foreign particle. The body’s immune system starts producing chemicals called histamines against the food allergens which triggers the allergic responses.

These allergic responses vary from person to person and can appear immediately or after several hours following the food intake. Reactions can be mild or severe affecting one or more parts of the body. This might involve skin (eczema), gastrointestinal system (child stomach pain), cardiovascular system (fainting), and respiratory system (shortness of breath).

The mild symptoms to food allergies include:

Severe allergic reactions called anaphylaxis are also developed in children like:

  • chest pain, low pulse
  • wheezing  and difficulty breathing
  • swelling in tongue, lips, and throat
  • hives – an itchy and bumped rash
  • fainting
  • nausea or vomiting
  • turning blue

Tests for food allergies

Pediatrician will prescribe appropriate tests for food allergies. This might include blood test, skin prick test or dietary review. The doctor might conduct an interrogative session to know the child’s symptoms. Like how often the reaction occurs, the onset of symptoms from the time of food intake, and family history for allergies, before running the test.

  • Skin prick test: Tests for food allergies by pricking the forearm skin and exposing it to the food allergens. If reddish raised spots or bumps appear within 15 minutes, it means that the child is allergic to that particular food.
  • Blood test: To check the presence of IgE antibodies in the blood after the consumption of particular food.
  • Dietary review of foods: To understand the symptoms and identify the food allergens.

A food challenge test might also be conducted where the amounts of the food allergen are increased slowly, and the symptoms are noted down by the doctor. This is usually done to check if the child has overcome an allergy.

Treatment for food allergies

The child diagnosed with food allergies will have to eliminate the food causing allergic responses from the diet completely. Parents should always check the allergen labels of all the packaged food products.

Though it is not possible to cure food allergies, but the symptoms can be treated. Antihistamines are administered to kids to treat the symptoms such as itchy rashes, runny nose or child stomach pain. In case the child faces severe allergic symptoms, parents should consult the pediatrician. (What are the natural remedies for children’s allergies)

Difference between food allergy and food intolerances

Parents are often confused with the terms “food allergies” and “food intolerances”. Food allergy induces an immunological response whereas food intolerances do not. Food intolerance is related to the digestive system and the body finds it difficult to digest a certain food. Both of them might show similar symptoms but the treatment varies. The best way to prevent both of the conditions is to avoid the foods causing allergies. (Foods for healthy gut?)

Some examples of food intolerances are lactose intolerance, celiac disease, etc. In the case of lactose intolerance, the lactose sugar found in cow’s milk is not digested by the body. Celiac disease causes an immune reaction damaging the lining of the small intestine when gluten protein is taken. The symptoms are normally observed over time when the food that is allergic is consumed more. The best treatment for food intolerances is to avoid the foods that cause symptoms mainly child stomach pain. The doctor may also advise different ways to prevent or overcome the reactions.

Growth and development for Infant- 6 months old

It feels like yesterday when your baby came into this world and now it’s half way to a year. There is so much going on in terms of growth and development for infant during 6 to 8 months of age . It’s fun and exciting seeing them do new things every day. This is the time when the left side of their brain starts talking to the right side of the brain. It helps them to coordinate with the movement of their body parts much better. The growth and development for infant at this age is very fast and you have to keep an eye on this. Following are the things that you can expect at 6 months (What foods can be given to 6 months old?) baby age:

Growth and development for infant

Physical development: By 6 months most of the babies start to roll over in both directions and push themselves up and down, it means now you have to take extra care while they are on bed or table. They begin to sit (How calcium and vitamin D helps in building strong bones in kids?) with or without support for some time and also are able to hold their head up strongly without any help. They also try to reach and grab toys and other things which they see and pass them from one hand to other.

Communication and language skills: Normally children start to babble consonant sounds like “ba”, “da”, “Ma”. They also begin to recognize their name and responses when someone calls their name. Beside their name they start to understand a few words like eat, bath, sleep (How sleep is related to brain development in babies?) etc. Some Kids at this age use their voice to get attention and to express their feelings.

Emotional development: The growth and development of newborn is very rapid. 6 months is the time when babies start differentiating between familiar faces and strangers, even their touch and voice. They respond to your smile and when you talk to them they express their feelings through their expressions. Seeing themselves in the mirror is fun for them at this age.

Cognitive skills: They start reaching for things and putting them in their mouth to explore the world, show curiosity (Some brain foods that can help to build cognition) about things and try to get objects that are out of their reach. They also try to move in all directions and decide whether to go, either for a toy or when they look at you.

Every child is different so their time to reach any particular developmental milestone varies too. Some kids grab skills early while some take a little more time. It’s not right to compare them with one another. But if anything is bothering you; it is always better to talk with your pediatrician. Some signs of development delays are:

When to consult a doctor:

  • Do not try to reach out for things and toys in sight.
  • Does not make any sounds.
  • Rarely responds to smiles and shows little interest in talking.
  • Not sitting even with support.
  • Not able to hold his/her head.
  • Trouble in eating, like pushing food out of the mouth instead of swallowing.
  • Does not respond to his/her name and to any other sounds around them.
  • Don’t make eye contact or every little eye contact.
  • Don’t roll over in any directions.
  • Seems very saggy or floppy.
Tips for growth and development for infant
  • Familiarize your baby with his/her name by using it frequently.
  • Get toys for your baby which is easy to pick with one hand, so that they can pass it from one hand to another.
  • Play interactive games. Like peekaboo, in which kids show their different expressions when you disappear and come back.
  • Reading by showing pictures and telling stories, develop your baby’s imagination, and help them to recognize things later.
  • Take your baby out to a park or garden, this will give your baby all together a different experience, as there is so much to see, smell, hear and touch.

6 months is also the time to start solid food for your baby, as only breast milk (How To increase breast milk production?) or formula milk is not anymore sufficient to meet their nutrients requirements. They also need solid food to build immunity and to support growth of brain, bones, eye-vision and overall body. Every food chosen has to have a nutritional purpose. Please keep this in mind that even a single junk food can prove to be a wasted opportunity, since the opportunity to feed is limited in babies. Feed these foods for better growth and development of infants.

Foods to start solids with:

Banana: Bananas are loaded with potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, folate, niacin and vitamin B6. They are also a rich source of prebiotic fiber that helps build a healthy digestive system. Banana(Recipe of banana muffins) is good for bones, improves brain power and cures constipation issues too. It is one of the best baby’s first foods to introduce. As it is sweet and creamy, babies also enjoy eating it. Initially you can start with giving half a small mashed banana. Later, a small banana per day is ideal for a kid.

Mung bean/ Moong Dal: Mung bean is the safest and one of the best foods for growth and development for infant. It is a great source of protein, iron, fiber, vitamins and minerals as well as probiotics (What is the role of prebiotic in maintaining gut health?). All of these nutrients are essential in babies growing years. Always remember to soak and sprout the bean since it makes it easy for a baby to digest. You may use any- hulled mung bean or those with green covering.

Potato: It is considered good for growth and development of infants. It is a good source of carbohydrates (Which foods can help kids to gain weight?) and provides energy to your growing baby. Vitamin C, starch and various enzymes in it nourishes baby’s skin. It also helps babies to gain healthy weight. Phosphorus in it contributes to building strong bones.

Rice water: Rice water is considered to be a very rejuvenating and healthy drink for babies. Rice water is starchy water left after rice is cooked. It is a great source of energy, as it contains carbohydrates. It also maintains the fluid level of the body and is effective in removing gastritis conditions in babies.

Carom seeds: It has powerful anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. Carom seed extract helps to prevent and treat gas and indigestion. It is a common medication used to treat coughs in India. You can start giving your baby a little bit of carom seed water after starting solids to save them from indigestion and gas.

Nutrition tips for Toddlers

Toddlers between the age group of 1 to 3 years go through a lot of developmental changes. It can often get challenging for parents to feed them healthy food and manage daily nutrition. There aren’t any strict rights or wrongs however there can be certain choices that can make the mealtime pleasant for both the child and the parent, while keeping it nutritious too. These nutrition tips for toddlers can help.

Nutrients:

Toddlers need roughly 1000 calories a day. Healthy food for toddlers must be packed with nutrients, namely some key ones like calcium, vitamin C, D, Iron (which are mostly found deficient too!) within those limited calories. For instance, handing over a cookie with 100 calories will take away your chance of feeding Iron to your child through a bowl of spinach soup. One nutrition tips for toddlers is to replace junk food with healthy food. Certain informed choices will have to be made to ensure that the calories are full of quality in the early years. (How iron deficiency affects child?)

WHY No Sugar for toddlers?

Another important nutrition tips for toddlers is to avoid sugar. Studies suggest that you should give no sugar for toddlers under 2 years of age.. The reasons for which sugar should be avoided are mentioned below:

  •  Calcium combines with phosphorus to make calcium phosphate which is the most important component for our bones. When sugar is consumed, there is an acid that’s released in the body. In order to balance this acid, calcium is extracted from the bones resulting in weaker bones and easy fractures.
  •  Vitamin D assists in absorption of Calcium by the bones. Consumption of sugar increases an enzyme that degrades vitamin D. And thereby results in reduced absorption of calcium by the bones. Double whammy!
  • Vitamin C helps to make collagen and also delays the decaying process of bones. Sugar intake restricts the absorption of this vitamin into our body cells resulting in weaker bones.
  • Magnesium works on keeping the bones strong. Sugar strips the body of magnesium too by releasing it out through urine.

WHY NO SALT FOR TODDLERS?

Toddlers are busy growing and crossing new milestones. Along with their body, their observation and admiration is also increasing and feeding healthy food for toddlers becomes more important. They are trying and accepting new food flavors. As a parent, it is imperative to present healthy food options which are not detrimental to the child’s growth, mainly bones. A study states that kids in India (and worldwide) tend to consume double the recommended limit of sodium in their diet. When sodium intake becomes too high, the body gets rid of sodium via the urine, taking calcium with it, which depletes calcium stores in the body resulting in weaker bones. Every bite matters and should be chosen wisely! That is why no salt for toddlers is advised.

Proteins:

Toddler years are a time of growth and development and protein plays an important role during this phase. Whey protein for child especially toddlers also has its benefits. Whey protein for toddlers can be made at home with the left-over fluid when yogurt is curdled.(How whey protein helps?)

Other important nutrition tips for toddlers to keep in mind:

various textures and tastes:

introduce various textures and tastes
  • The sooner the transition from baby food to family food happens, it not only makes the life of the parent much easier but also prepares the child to try varied textures and tastes. Early introduction of healthy food is necessary for growing kids. Nutrient deficiency can directly impact digestion, bones and brain development of the child. Hence, every bite the child takes should be loaded with goodness (and taste!) (Baby’s first foods?)

Food format Matters:

food format matters
  • For ideal nutrition intake, we should serve a variety of healthy food for toddlers preferably in the format he or she loves to eat. It is not only liberating but also time saving for the parents to share the same meal with the child as he/she is eating. It is observed that it’s not the healthy food that makes a child fussy but the food format. If a child is given healthy food in his/her favourite format in their early years, then they learn to eventually pick up and enjoy those vegetables, fruits and nuts without much fuss. For example, if a child loves fries, then baking sweet potato or carrot fries with favorite seasoning is a no brainer.

healthy eating habits:

kids tend to copy parents
  • Kids do as their parents do. They copy! Sharing and eating appealing, tasty healthy food with the child, makes the whole process of feeding not only simple but also pleasant. Mostly food preferences are formed early in life. Hence, onus is on the parent as to what options does he/she serve to the child. Serving healthy food for toddlers or child-friendly food will most likely make the child habitual to less spice, easy to chew, limited food options. These habit forming preferences only become firmer with age resulting in either higher consumption of processed food (like cookies, fries etc) or a separate meal preparation at home (which can get frustrating eventually). (Why junk food should be avoided?)
