for throat pain home remedies

Sore throats are a frequent illness, especially in the winter. While the most frequent kid complaint is a sore throat, it may be extremely stressful for newborns, toddlers, and their parents. Crying, irritability, exhaustion, difficulty to eat or speak correctly, and even breathing difficulties might accompany it. A sore throat is an unwelcome guest, and while it is generally not a serious problem, it is vital to understand what causes it and how to care for your kid if they are suffering from one. Here are some foods for throat pain along with the best home remedies. (7 Foods to boost immunity in kids)

What is a sore throat?

Sore throat is a common ailment that affects individuals of all ages, including newborns, all over the world. It has a variety of reasons, but the most frequent is a typical cold or flu virus infection. Other more dangerous viral infections, including measles, chickenpox, and croup, can also produce a sore throat. The mucous lining of the throat and upper respiratory tract is irritated primarily or secondary to a bacterial or viral throat infection in the majority of these disorders. Teething can also cause sore throat in some babies.

Allergies to pollen from plants and flowers, smoke in the home (including cooking odours and tobacco), dust mites, and cat or dog hair can potentially cause a throat infection in newborns. Allergy rhinitis is the medical term for this illness.

Causes of sore throat:

Your baby’s sore throat might be caused by a variety of factors. The following are the most prevalent reasons:

Sore throat symptoms in babies:

In general, a baby or toddler’s throat infection is a sign of an underlying infection or body response that is causing it. Depending on what caused the sore throat, the symptoms might differ.

  • Throat redness: The mucous lining of the throat may be swollen. In newborns and infants, this is difficult to notice. Toddlers can be taken to a light area and asked to open their mouth to examine the state of the throat and see whether there are any other symptoms such as ulcers, yellowish layer on the tongue, or enlarged tonsils, all of which can suggest particular conditions underlying the sore throat.
  • Irritable and restless child: The infant is irritable and agitated as a result of the infection and inability to feed. Frequently, irritation and restlessness are exacerbated by a lack of sleep and hunger.
  • Difficulty swallowing food: In newborns, a sore throat causes swelling of the mucosal membranes, making swallowing food and even saliva painful. Due to the discomfort, the infant may scream and refuse to eat even though they are hungry.
  • Enlarged lymph glands: An infected sore throat may be accompanied by inflamed lymph glands, indicating that the body is combating the infection.
  • Foul or Bad breath: Because the infant has been unable to feed, he or she will have a dry mouth and, as a result, bad breath. This is particularly noticeable in situations of gingivitis, thrush, or hand, foot, and mouth illness.
  • Strep throat symptoms: Strep throat symptoms include red and white spots in the throat as well as swollen tonsils in toddlers. As a result, swallowing becomes more difficult. Fever, painful or enlarged glands and lymph, headache, and stomach discomfort are all possible symptoms.

11 Effective Home Remedies for Ear Infections in Kids

Ear infections can be really uncomfortable and painful for children and seeing your child in pain is something no parent wants. Though ear infections are more common in younger children, grown up kids and adults can also have it. Good thing is that for most of the ear infections or ear pain, your child might not even need medications. In this article, you will know about the best and most effective home remedies for ear infections.

What is an Ear infection?

An ear infection is an infection of the middle ear, the air-filled space behind the eardrum that contains the tiny vibrating bones of the ear. It might be caused by a bacteria or virus in the ear. Ear infections often happen as a result of allergies, colds, or upper respiratory problems. When the tubes inside the ear fill up with fluid and mucus, this causes an infection. Acute Otitis Media (AOM) is the most common ear infection.

Signs and symptoms of ear Infections in Children:

  • Ear pain, especially when lying down
  • Tugging or pulling at an ear
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Crying more than usual
  • Fussiness
  • Trouble hearing or responding to sounds
  • Loss of balance
  • Fever of 100 F (38 C) or higher
  • Drainage of fluid from the ear
  • Headache
  • Loss of appetite (Tips to improve appetite?)
  • Sore throat

When to see a Doctor?

It is important to get an accurate diagnosis and rule out any other severe conditions. You should call your child’s doctor if:

  • Symptoms last for more than a day
  • Your baby is less than 6 months old with any of the above symptoms
  • Ear pain is severe
  • Your infant or toddler is sleepless or irritable after a cold or other upper respiratory infection
  • You observe a discharge or fluid from the ear

Your doctor will advise medications or suggest going with the home remedies depending on the severity of the infection. The latest guidelines from the American Association of Pediatrics suggest that doctors should focus on pain management, not antibiotics, for ear infections. This is because ear infections often go away on their own, and the overuse of antibiotics could lead to antibiotic-resistant infections.

Causes of Ear Infections in Children:

Many times, ear infections are caused from another illness like cold, flu or allergy, that results in congestion and swelling of the nasal passages, throat and eustachian tubes. (What are some foods & remedies for cough and cold?)

Other possible causes for an earache or ear infection are mentioned below:

11 Home Remedies for Ear Infections in Children:

1.Cold or Warm Compresses

One of the best home remedies for ear infections in children is using warm and cold compresses. Hold either a hot pad or cold washcloth against the ear for 10 to 15 minutes or alternate between hot and cold.

2. Neck exercises

Ear infections cause pressure in the ear canal which can be relieved by Neck exercises. Here’s how to do neck-rotation exercises:

  1. Sit or stand up straight.
  2. Rotate your neck to the right, so it’s parallel with your right shoulder. Hold for five to 10 seconds.
  3. Repeat this exercise on the left side.
  4. Raise your shoulders high like you’re trying to reach your earlobes with them. Hold for five to 10 seconds.
  5. Repeat these exercises throughout the day.

3. Olive oil

Though there is no solid scientific evidence to prove that drops of olive oil in your ear canal can soothe ear pain. However, according to the American Association of Pediatrics, putting a few warm drops of olive oil in the ear is safe and could be moderately effective.

For young children, it is advisable to consult a doctor before giving oil. Another important point is to make sure the olive oil is no warmer than your body temperature so as to avoid burning the eardrum.

4. Mullein

Oil made from the flowers of the mullein plant is an effective pain reliever for ear infections. Mullein is available at most health food stores as a stand-alone tincture or as an ingredient in herbal ear drops.

5.Vitamin D

Vitamin D may seem unrelated to ear infections, but it is known to boost immunity. And a healthier immune system is less likely to be susceptible to ear infections. (How some foods can help to boost immunity?) According to a 2017 study, the risk of ear infections might be reduced by increasing serum levels of vitamin D through food consumption, supplementation, and direct sunlight.

6. Garlic oil

Due to its antimicrobial, antiviral, and antifungal properties, garlic oil ear drops can be applied to the ear canal to help kill bacteria or viruses that might be causing an ear infection. You can also soak crushed garlic cloves in warm olive oil to make your own garlic oil ear drops. Hence, garlic oil is one of the best home remedies for ear infections.

7.Chiropractic

Chiropractic adjustments may help relieve tight muscles around the ear, which will allow trapped fluid to drain. According to this study where 46 children aged 5 & below participated, 93 percent of them showed improvement following chiropractic adjustments. 43 percent of the children felt better after only one or two sessions.

8. Hydrogen peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide can help keep ears clean and prevent dirt or additional bacteria from entering the middle ear. It is especially useful for preventing swimmer’s ears. Swab a tiny amount of hydrogen peroxide onto the ear canal, but be careful that too much doesn’t get into the ear itself.

9.Ginger

Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties and thus applying ginger in juice form or as infused oil to the outer ear canal can help to relieve the ear infection. But never put it directly into the ear.

10.Sleep positions

Resting or sleeping sitting upright rather than lying down can encourage fluid in your ear to drain. This could ease pressure and pain in your middle ear. Prop yourself up in bed with a stack of pillows, or sleep in a reclining armchair. (Foods for sound sleep?)

11.Distraction

Sometimes distraction helps to take your child’s mind off the pain or discomfort they are suffering.

You may want to:

  • Put on their favorite movie
  • Engage them in colouring or drawing activity
  • Allow them a bubble bath with lots of toys
  • Let them play a game on your phone or tablet
  • Give them their favorite snack (Healthy recipes for kids?)
  • Find other things for them to focus on

If your child is of teething age, offer cooled teething toys for chewing.

These home remedies for ear infections should help to relieve your child from any discomfort or ear pain. But if the problem continues, it is advisable to see a pediatrician.

Causes of Nasal Congestion in kids: 8 Ways to Relieve

Baby’s stuffy or runny nose is a matter of concern for every parent but also unavoidable due to their still maturing immune system. Stuffed-up noses are caused by inflammation of the sensitive membranes that line the nasal cavity, and they’re usually nothing to worry about. Nasal obstruction is when the nasal passages are blocked, or there is difficulty breathing from the nose. This is very common in babies and toddlers. Especially it is troublesome for newborns younger than 2 months, as they don’t know how to sniff or blow their nose while adults and older children can blow their noses to help clear their nasal passages. The most common causes for nasal congestion and runny nose in infants and children are infections, mainly of viral origin, or allergies

WHATSAPP for concerns like Speech Delay, Low Weight, Frequent Illness, Hyperactivity, Low Concentration, Weak Eyesight, Improper Sleep, Pigmentation, Pores, Face Marks, Fine Lines , Lactation etc.

Symptoms of nasal congestion

A child with nasal congestion may also have these symptoms

  • Stuffy or Runny nose
  • Sneezing or coughing
  • Itchy eyes, nose, mouth and throat
  • Reduced sense of smell or taste
  • Has difficulty breathing or is unable to breathe
  • Noisy breathing
  • Body aches
  • Recurrent, severe respiratory infection
  • Problem in falling asleep. (some foods that help in sound sleep)
  • Difficulty in feeding
Causes For nasal congestion

Nasal congestion can be caused by any of the following causes:

Cold and flu

Children catch colds when a virus comes in contact with the lining of the nose and throat. There are more than two hundred different viruses causing colds in children, but the Rhinovirus is the most common offender. The symptoms for cold include stuffy or runny nose and sneezing. (Home remedies for cold and flu)

Infection of the sinuses:

Sinuses are moist air spaces within the bones of the face around the nose. When they get infected and swell or become irritated, this is called sinusitis (or a sinus infection).  This infection usually causes nasal congestion.

Allergic rhinitis:

These are the symptoms that occur when you breathe in something you are allergic to, such as dust, animal dander, or pollen. Symptoms can also occur when you eat a food that you are allergic to. (What are some common food allergies in kids?)

Presence of irritants:

Another prominent cause of blocked nose due to cold in children is the presence of irritants such as dust, smoke, or perfumes around the little one.

Foreign object in nostril:

Nasal congestion in toddlers can also be because of the insertion of small objects like a bead or a peanut by mistake, which make it difficult to breathe properly and need to be taken out immediately.

Large adenoids

When the tissue in the back of the nose in children is enlarged, this may also cause nasal congestion in kids.

When to see a doctor?

In most of the cases nasal congestion is minor and clears up within a few days. If you notice any of the following symptoms, please seek help from your baby’s doctor.

  • Have fever (How to control fever at home?)
  • Nasal discharge persists for more than 10 to 14 days
  • Greenish or bloody nasal discharge
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Your child is eating or drinking less or seems to be having trouble with feeding
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Your child is peeing less than normal
  • Ear pain.
  • A blue tint to skin around lips and nostrils.
Home remedies for nasal congestion

Taking proper care at home can help your baby to recover fast from nasal congestion. Below are some home remedies and foods that can help your baby.

Plenty of fluid:

Keep your child hydrated, this will help in thinning the mucus clogged in their nasal passage. If the baby is under 6 months, feed more breastmilk or formula milk and if the child is above 6 month you can offer warm water or other fluids. Give a small amount of fluid at a time but multiple times in a day. Apart from this you can also offer hot homemade soups, which are full of essential vitamins and minerals and are easy to digest. Avoid drinks with caffeine, including colas and tea, because they can make dehydration worse by increasing urination.

Saline solution:

This is the most important home remedy for a stuffy nose. Mix a teaspoon of table salt in warm water and pour the solution into your kid’s nostrils with the help of a dropper. This will directly impact the thinning of the mucus.

Warm  compress:

Warm compress is one of the traditional and proven remedies to open up the nasal passage. Soak a soft washcloth in the warm water, squeeze it well. Now place this over the nose. This will help your child in passing the mucus and eases the clogged nose. Repeat this in a regular interval.

Steam:

If your child has nasal congestion then giving them steam is the best thing to do. For small kids who can’t inhale steam themselves, turn on the shower up to its hottest setting and close the door and let the steam build up. Turn off the shower once the bathroom is full of steam, now sit there with your baby for sometime. Your baby will automatically inhale the steam. This will help in thinning of mucus and give your baby relief from nasal congestion.

Sleeping Position:

Keep your child’s head in an elevated position to give some relief from cough and blocked nose that perpetuates through the night. (How is sleep and brain development related?)

TURMERIC

Due to its antibacterial and anti-viral properties turmeric is one of the best foods for cold and flu season, known to treat viral infections. Adding turmeric powder to a glass of warm milk can offer relief in the aching throat and runny nose.

GINGER

Ginger roots have been used for centuries for health benefits in Asian cultures. Research shows that ginger has medicinal properties, both antiviral and antibacterial, that could help ease the symptoms of stuffy nose or sore throat. Take out some ginger juice by grating it and mix it with some honey. Give this mixture to your child above 1 year twice a day for quick relief (What are other Ayurvedic herbs that are good for kids?)

Massage

• Heat mustard oil and roast garlic and carom seeds in it. Once cool, apply this oil on the baby’s head, palm, feet base, chest and back. Leave it applied and let the child sleep. It will help settle the cold and cough both. Also, any body ache the child has will be resolved. Mustard oil is a very effective cough and cold home remedy.

• Take1 to 2 tbs of lukewarm mustard oil and mix half a teaspoon of rock salt. Then, massage this oil gently on the baby’s chest and back, cover with cotton cloth. The warmth of mustard oil helps in relieving congestion.

Prevention is better than cure

Do your child often fall sick with fever, cold and cough? The food we eat plays a key role in determining the overall health and immunity. It gives the body a condition of being able to resist a particular disease. By adding foods, like Nuts, Seeds, Ayurvedic herbs like Tulsi, Giloy, Turmeric, Amla, Ashwagandha and Antioxidants like Cocoa and Vitamin E to your kid’s diet you can prevent them from falling sick again and again by boosting their immunity.

However, when it comes to satisfying both flavour and nutrition in your child’s diet, pasta may be the greatest option. Easy, classic pasta recipes with vegetables are an excellent way to include nutrition into your child’s favourite meal. It may be carried in a lunch box or offered as an after-school snack while your child is watching his or her favourite TV show or the T20, IPL live.

Pasta is one of the most popular foods among children because of its smoothness, variety of forms, and ability to be prepared in a variety of ways while retaining the majority of its original flavour. It is made from whole grains and has its own set of health benefits. Some parents, though, maybe concerned about adding carbohydrates to their child’s diet too soon. While there is no need to be concerned because newborns require carbohydrates for growth and development, parents should be aware that when served in moderation and in combination with other nutritious meals, pasta recipes with vegetables may be a nutritious meal option for their children. ( 10 easy dinner recipes in India for kids of all ages)

This article will explain the benefits of pasta and provide a few nutritious pasta recipes with vegetables for kids.

When and how to introduce pasta to babies?

Pasta is best offered during the solid food phase, which begins when your baby has hit the age of 6 months and has been introduced to purees (Baby’s first foods). When making pasta for newborns, keep in mind that it should be thoroughly cooked so that it may be mashed if necessary. You can be creative and make meals exciting for the infant by using different types of pasta, such as stars, bows, or elbow-shaped pasta. (5 recipes for easy digestion in kids)

It is also a typical dish served during baby-led weaning. If you have not already introduced egg or wheat into your baby’s diet, be cautious while introducing pasta because it frequently contains both of these major food allergies.

What are some ways to make pasta healthier?

Here are a few suggestions for making pasta dishes healthier: (Healthy snacks in the evening – Roasted Makhana)

  • You may choose pasta produced from legume flour (black bean pasta, chickpea pasta, lentil pasta) which is often higher in nutrients than pasta prepared from rice or wheat flour.
  • Enriched pasta will also provide additional nutrients such as iron and B vitamins.
  • Moreover, you may make your child’s favourite food healthy by including extra vegetables in hidden forms, such as vegetable sauce.

Precautions to keep in mind while introducing pasta to children

Getting to know your pasta is essential, especially if it is not a common meal in your region. Here are some things to keep in mind while giving pasta for your child –

  1. Pasta should be consumed in moderation and as part of a well-balanced diet.
  2. Before you buy pasta, be sure you know what the base component is. Make sure the pasta you choose is not processed, or prepared with all-purpose flour or maida. Pasta for newborns should be made from whole wheat, durum wheat, or rice flour.
  3. Make sure there are no additives or artificial flavours in your baby’s food since they might harm his or her health.
  4. When serving pasta as finger food, keep an eye out for choking hazards. Give them tiny pasta or chop regular pasta into smaller pieces.
  5. If your baby does not appear to enjoy the texture of pasta, you can stop feeding it for a few days and reintroduce later.

Healthy pasta recipes with vegetables:

As already said, pasta must be cooked in a specific manner in order for the babies to digest it easily. However, these pasta recipes with vegetables, like many pasta dishes with a base sauce, include a hidden vegetable sauce, which is an excellent way to improve a child’s vegetable consumption.

Infants with GERD are otherwise healthy, but some may develop problems that affect their nerves, brain or muscles.

According to the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearing house, A child’s immature digestive system is responsible for it and most infants come out of this condition as they complete one year of age. 5% of older children are at risk of having GERD, if he/she experienced it as a baby. 8 healthy and creamy recipe of smoothies and milkshakes

Are you worried that your children are not getting enough nutrients every day? Smoothies and milkshakes are a tasty and nutritious solution! They are simple, quick, delicious and ideal for breakfast, snacking, or a quick lunch on the run! These 8 recipe of smoothies and milkshakes can help your child consume more fruits, veggies, and add nutrients into their tiny belly.

Smoothies vs milkshakes: What’s the difference?

Almost everyone enjoys smoothies and milkshakes. These two delicious treats are frequently confused. However, they are extremely different in terms of preparation as well as consistency.
