6. Stop using junk as a bribe:

Stop using junk food as a bribe, if you want your kid to do some chores. This will inculcate a mindset where the kid will think that he needs to act good to get what he wanted and will have a very unhealthy relationship with the food. Kids shouldn’t associate good behaviour with eating calorie-dense, unhealthy meals.

7. Keep your kids hydrated:

Your toddler may occasionally be motivated to get a snack solely out of boredom rather than actual hunger. Many times, giving them a glass of water during snack time will be sufficient to satisfy their appetite.

8. Go on shopping together:

Taking your children shopping and teaching them how to read labels and choose nutritious and healthy eating food helps to introduce healthy eating food habits in them at a young age. They will be able to discriminate between what is healthy and what is bad for their health, and these children will grow up to be mindful eaters.

10. Start practising a healthy lifestyle

Just as much as they require a balanced diet, growing children also require the recommended amounts of sleep. Poor sleep directly influences food choices because it disrupts the rhythm of the hormones ghrelin and leptin, which can decrease appetite. Similarly, sitting idle can cause them to develop food cravings. Therefore, instead of allowing your children to play video games, set out some time in your schedule to take them outside to play.

Tips for home schooling a child with autism

Here are some effective tips for home schooling your kids to make it more enjoyable and successful:

1.Prepare a curriculum

It’s essential to have all the things ready before you start a home schooling program. If you spend more time on fetching the study materials, it can be upsetting for your child and could cause them to quit and lose interest to learn with you. Alternatively, collect all of the study materials either the night before or right before you start your home schooling activities. Some autistic kids are unable to learn efficiently as other kids. It is preferable to consult a special educator while creating a curriculum for such kids, which may include components from several school boards.

When children listen to a story, their imagination is on steroids! They’re picturing characters, they’re living the plot and they’re visualising the setting; they’re sowing the first seeds of creativity. Encourage them to talk to you about the plot and characters, ask them the moral of the story and how they think a character could behave, let them ask questions whenever they feel like they’re simply learning how to express themselves.

Speech therapy fun exercises for improving speech

Speech

Is your child face difficulty at placing words within a sentence? Is he/she not able to pronounce words with clarity and ease? If yes, then it is must to make the kiddo cope up with it through speech exercises. The inability to communicate also makes it difficult for the child to convey his thoughts or emotions. Thus speech disorders fall out as one of the most common disabilities among kids affecting over 10% of the children. In the long run, this can put limitations upon the kids abilities and also restrict them from being a part of several activities. Do you really want to see your child speech deprived? No, right! None of the parents would think of it.

So, Let’s first look at why speech is important.

WHATSAPP for concerns like Speech Delay, Low Weight, Frequent Illness, Hyperactivity, Low Concentration, Weak Eyesight, Improper Sleep, Pigmentation, Pores, Face Marks, Fine Lines , Lactation etc.

Feedbacks from parents

Importance of speech

Speech helps us in expressing ourselves. It effectively aids in building strong connections, reaching out to people and also influences our choices in life!

Inability to communicate properly can also create misunderstandings, social disapproval, unclarity, etc. Thus it becomes a must to gain firm grip upon one’s speech.

What can be some causes of speech disorders?

There can be different types of causes behind speech disorders.

Some of them include:

  • Autism
  • Attention deficit or hyperactivity disorder
  • Developmental or neurological disorder
  • Brain injury
  • Nervous system disorder
  • Hearing issues

If symptoms are left ignored, they could get worse and harm a child’s speech development. Communication difficulties can be effectively treated in order to reduce symptoms and significantly enhance behavioural and educational patterns. Speech exercises can tremendously help in bringing flexibility in tongue and clarity in communication!

Exercises for Speech Improvement

A child’s speech and language development can be aided by techniques and equipment used in structured speech therapy exercises. They are essential for enhancing a child’s speech, language, and communication abilities and, when given as a part of an entertaining activity, are enjoyable for young children while still being a very effective component of therapy.

Come on! Let’s get acquainted with some interesting exercises.

The following exercises can aid in your child’s oral motor muscle development. The exercises are made simpler if your youngster copies you while performing them. Be imaginative, energetic, and most importantly, have fun!

1. Tongue exercises

The main objective of tongue exercise is to strengthen the tongue muscle and increase oral coordination and stimulation.

Tongue Push-ups (Procedure)Tongue Pops  (Procedure)Back and Forth (Procedure)
Ask the child to hold the grape or berry on the upper ridge of their palate (not to touch the teeth) and roll the tongue upwards. Repeat it 3-4 times for few seconds. At last, berry is the reward!Suck tongue up on the top of the mouth. Pull it back and release it making a pop sound. Repeat it 3-4 times for few secondsSlide out your tongue and hold it for few seconds. Now the tongue inside the mouth. Make sure the tongue does not touch the teeth. Repeat it 3-4 times
2. Hop and talk

Although you already know that repetition is an effective strategy in speech and language therapy, it is not enjoyable to encourage children to repeat the same sound or word repeatedly. But it is possible with a little inventiveness on your part.

For eg: Make a trail with foamy pads on the way. Ask your little kiddo to jump from one pad to the next and repeat some sounds and words along with you. They won’t see this repetition exercise as anything other than pleasure because they’ll be too busy hopping!

3. One stanza of music each day

Music can indeed be a strong source to improve language skills. Every line full of meaning can help the child to develop verbally! So also it puts healthy force upon the vocal cords and helps out with speech.

For eg: Ask your child to learn one stanza of his favourite song supposedly “Saare jahan se accha Hindustan hamara”. Let him recite it once he is done learning the lyrics. The lyrics of music indeed can help the child in getting a firm grip on pronunciation, utterance and the  knowledge of words.

4. Picture decoding

This is one of the best ways to lighten up imagination centers in kids’ brains! Pictures indeed speak a lot and visual interpretation helps in understanding the things much better.

For eg: Place a cartoon scene of “Tom and jerry” in front of the child. Ask the child to speak a few sentences on each character that is the part of the scene. And then ask the child to narrate the scene or what is he actually able to understand from the picture displayed.

5. Bubbling

It’s exciting and entertaining to practise breath control with your kids by blowing bubbles. Because blowing forces kids to purse their lips, it’s also a great oral motor practice. Blowing exercises such as blowing bubbles position and strengthen the tongue for sounds produced in the back of the mouth. It also strengthens the abdominal muscles and helps in sustained speech thereby increasing the sentence length.

6. One new word each day

Learning one new word each day is a wonderful way of gradually expanding the vocabulary.

For eg: Give one word to the kid like “Sugar”. Ask the kid to use that word and make a sentence out of it followed by its pronunciation.

The sentence can be like this : I want some more sugar in milk.

In this way a kid will understand the basics behind sentence structure building and so also it will foster speech improvement.

7. Target reach

A fantastic technique to get your younger children talking is through toy cars. Make a road through the space using yarn or tape, and place many “stops” along the path that contain the desired word, sound, or statement. Encourage the kid to sound out the target word or sentence at each stop before continuing on to the finish line.

This will pour in a sense of awareness within the child and also enhance the speech due to pronunciation.

8. Play with consonant sounds

Consonant sounds make speech crisp, clear, and understandable, which makes it simpler for listeners to understand what is being said. Compared to vowels, consonants are simpler to learn. Each consonant sound can typically only be spoken in one way. You can also start clubbing vowels with the consonants to develop understanding for sounds.

For eg: R consonant clubbed with a,e,i,o,u will become “ra,re,ri,ro,ru”

Thus some of these exercises can effectively help in improving speech disorders.

Foods that can be helpful

Some of the foods that can help with the speech disorders include:

All the nuts like almonds, walnuts, cashew, peanuts and hazelnuts are rich in vitamin E and help in boosting memory. They are also antioxidants which protect against cell damage. Gut health and Immunity: How it is linked?

Gut health

Almost all of the nutrients that we get from foods are absorbed by our gut. Kid’s gut health is vital for their overall well being as it influences many aspects of health. The gut microbiome of a child is built before birth itself. This healthy microbiome not only improves the gut health but also helps to fight against various infections by improving the immunity. Do you know how gut health influences immunity? What is the role of gut microbes and its link with immunity? Let’s unravel the connection between gut health and immunity in this article.

Gut microbes and its role

There are trillions of microorganisms or bacteria living in the human body. Although the majority of them are beneficial, when unbalanced, they could be dangerous. Gut microbiota is a broad and diverse population of microbes which has a significant impact on human health. Humans’ ability to absorb nutrients depends on the condition of their gut bacteria. Beneficial bacteria residing in our gut are contributing to digestion and overall gut health. In fact, complex compounds in meats and vegetables can be broken down by the body with the assistance of gut microbes. Our body is unable to break down plant cellulose without the help of gut microorganisms. The metabolic processes of gut microorganisms may potentially affect food cravings and satiety.

linked between gut health and immune system

The capacity of the body to fight against pathogenic infections is referred to as immunity. According to certain studies, the body may encounter microbes before birth. This first encounter of microbes can give rise to acquired immunity which is responsible for immunological memory. After coming into contact with same germs, our immune system picks up the better way to fight with them. This enables a faster and more efficient reaction against pathogens. 70-80% of immune cells are located in the gut. Beneficial gut microbes produce bacteriocins which are antimicrobial compounds capable of eradicating pathogenic bacteria. Additionally, they nourish the lining of the stomach and regulate immunological responses. The growth of the microbiota can be affected by interruptions in these early encounters.

Calcium is predominately found in milk and milk based products like cheese. And is also found in smaller quantities in some nuts and seeds. (Should kids take whey protein?) Moreover, few herbs such as shallaki also contains calcium.

Logical reasoning

The ability to grasp ideas and make decisions logically to apply them in daily tasks is referred to as logical reasoning. Children naturally possess the capacity for logical reasoning. Parents usually assume that, when their children become older, they will naturally learn to reason. Children learn to develop themselves through listening. Although they are unable to communicate clearly, they build a logic based on what they observe around them. Children are not able to understand from other’s perspective, they only see the world in their own perspective. Toddlers figure out their problems by making mistakes. As a result, they will gain the ability to reason logically.

Activities and games to improve logical reasoning skills

Incorporation of games for the brain into the daily routine of the kids is a must. Start the activities off easy and then gradually add complexity with rules, variants, or additional challenges to help toddlers develop their ability to self-regulate. Here are some games and activities that can help kids in logical reasoning:

1.Books

Books play a vital role in brain development of children as well as motor skill development. You can introduce board books from 6 months and paper books from 1 year. Show different colours, shapes and objects through these books or just allow your baby to turn the pages by themselves and let them observe and memorise things. After 3 years, kids would be able to ask us more questions about the book. They can also think and respond immediately when you ask questions.

2.Story telling

Reading and storytelling with babies and children promotes brain development, logical thinking and imagination, develops language and emotions, and strengthens relationships.

3.Brain teasers

These games for the brain are excellent for exercising the brain because they even have puzzles that require concentration to solve. Brain teasers assist a child in developing their cognitive abilities and enhancing their focus in this way. It helps in stimulating a kid’s imagination and develops logical reasoning skills. For eg: Give your child some simple teasers to answer .

  • “It has two hands but is not able to clap. What is it?” And the answer to this question is “A clock”.
  • It has two legs but is not able to walk. What is it?” And the answer to this question is “A table”.
4.Sorting games

Sorting is a useful ability that aids in improving logical reasoning of kids with things, everyday situations, as well as math ideas. Ask your child to sort his/her toys and legos and put them into two separate boxes. Ask your kid to do simple household duties like putting clothes for laundry, arranging their stuff, folding clothes etc. Appreciate your kid for what he/she has done even if it is not perfect. This inspires kids to take responsibility and develop their logical reasoning skills.

5.Spend some time in nature

Another tip to improve concentration in kids is spending time in nature. Research suggests that natural environments could benefit brain development and may also improve concentration and logical reasoning in children. Show them different types of flowers, pets, and other kids around. Let them walk in the grass. This will help children to explore and observe more.

6.Lego game

Legos are full of fun! It helps a child in building up a structure step by step with small boxes as their basic unit. The ability to differentiate the legos based on shapes or colours is one of the benefits to improve logical reasoning in kids. With LEGO bricks, kids can create and even pick up objects while exercising their fingers. Children enjoy the excitement of creating, and they can do this for hours while developing strong little hand muscles that will aid them in learning other abilities, like how to write.

7.Treasure hunt

Hide chocolates, gifts, pencils, crayons, toys or other things of your choice in a safe space like your garden, park or outside your house. Give the kids a list of objects that are hidden or their pictures and tell them to find those things. Now tell them to sort, match or arrange them in order. These activities for kids bring out the little detective and help them learn about things and organise them. This activity helps to enhance both physical health and logical reasoning skills.

8.Obstacle games

Physical activities not only help in physical development but also aids in thinking logically. Obstacle games are easy to set up in your room or garden. You can create a simple obstacle for younger kids and a little creativity for older kids which may include something to walk on, crawl under, crawl through, jump, throw, hop, solve a riddle, the possibilities are endless. As per instructions, kids will analyse, think and act accordingly.

9.Mealtime fun games

Every mother has a tale about her child refusing to eat fruits or veggies. The struggle between kids and a platter of fruits and vegetables is as ancient as time itself. While introducing your toddler to various colourful fruits and veggies, make cheerful expressions and sounds. Cut the different fruits like apples, guava, pineapple etc in different shapes and keep it in front of your kid. Let them observe the colour, taste, smell and shape of the fruits.Allow them to pick and eat by themselves. Ask them the name of the fruit and its colour. Never forget to appreciate them. This will not only improve their health but also reasoning skills.

10.Games for 5+ kids

If your child is above 5 years you can start with games like chess, sudoku, slime, clay, crossword and math games, that will help to increase their logical reasoning skills.
