tips to improve concentration

8 Common Nutritional Deficiencies in Children

nutritional deficiencies in children

Have you ever wondered why your child gets sick or has health difficulties despite having a full plate of food? Do you think that plate provides all the essential nutrients that the child requires? Nowadays, malnutrition is most prevalent and is found to be associated with common nutritional deficiencies in children.

Most parents make the mistake of believing that just because their child eats three meals a day means he or she is getting all of the nutrients needed for growth and development. But, a well-balanced meal consisting of all the important vitamins and minerals is all that the child needs. So, let’s understand what is nutritional deficiencies, symptoms, nutritional deficiencies diseases and foods that help to overcome them.

WHATSAPP for concerns like Speech Delay, Low Weight, Frequent Illness, Hyperactivity, Low Concentration, Weak Eyesight, Improper Sleep, Pigmentation, Pores, Face Marks, Fine Lines, Lactation etc.

 What are nutritional deficiencies?

The child’s body needs a sufficient amount of vitamins and minerals to grow properly and be able to fight and avoid diseases. We refer to these nutrients as micronutrients.

While some are made naturally by the body, the majority come from the foods your children consume. Malnutrition, also known as nutrient deficiency, occurs when your child’s body does not get or is unable to absorb the necessary amount of nutrients.

Signs and symptoms of nutritional deficiencies in children

Nutritional deficiencies cause health-related problems which can be difficult to detect while your child is young but become more apparent as they develop. Immune deficiency, stunted bone development, delayed brain growth, weariness, digestive troubles, and even early dementia are few common nutritional deficiencies symptoms.

Apart from these common symptoms, nutritional deficiencies diseases also exhibit symptoms such as :

  • Lethargy
  • Loss of attention
  • Dry skin/hair
  • Depression/ Anxiety
  • Delayed speech
  • Weight loss
  • Hyperactivity
  • Frequent cold or flu

8 Common nutritional deficiencies in children

Here is a list of some common nutritional deficiencies in children, their symptoms and dietary sources:

1. Calcium deficiency

Every cell in your body requires calcium to function properly. Calcium helps to mineralize bones and teeth, which is especially important during periods of rapid growth. Calcium is also a signalling molecule, so a deficiency can cause problems with your child’s heart, nerves, and muscles.

You should never take more calcium than you need. Calcium levels in your blood are strictly controlled, therefore any excess is stored in your bones as calcium phosphate. As a result, your bones will release calcium if you don’t get enough of it from the diet.

HeALTH CONCERNS caused due to calcium deficiency

In many cases, a calcium deficiency is not accompanied by symptoms. However, rickets in children and osteoporosis in the elderly are two prevalent forms of calcium deficiency that cause weaker and more fragile bones.

Dietary sources of calcium

Here are some of the calcium-rich foods that you should include in the diet:

  • Milk and dairy products like cheese and yogurt
  • Moringa
  • Ragi (8 amazing benefits of Ragi)
  • Vegetables like cabbage, mustard, broccoli, lady’s finger
  • Seeds like poppy, chia and sesame
  • Almonds
  • Makhana/ Lotus seeds
  • Amaranth

2. Iron deficiency

Iron deficiency is one of the most common nutritional deficiencies in children. However, it is even more common in picky eaters and toddlers who have weaned from breast milk. (Iron deficiency in children)

Iron is a vital mineral that is found in abundance in red blood cells. Also, iron attaches to haemoglobin and aids oxygen transport between blood cells. It also aids in the production of RBCs.

There are two types of dietary iron – Heme and Non- heme iron. Heme iron is found in animal sources such as red meat and is easily absorbed in the body. Non-heme iron can be present in plant and animal foods, but it is difficult to absorb.

Vegetarians and vegans mostly consume plant sources having non-heme iron which is less absorbed. Hence they are more likely to develop iron deficiency.

HeALTH CONCERNS caused due to iron deficiency

Anemia is the most common nutritional deficiency in children. The common symptoms of anemia include pale skin, fatigue, weakness and tiredness, poor appetite, craving for strange things like ice, dirt and paint, slower growth and development, behavioural issues, frequent infection.

Dietary sources of iron

The best sources of iron both heme and non-heme are listed below:

Heme iron sources:
  • Red meat
  • Shellfish
  • Organ meat
  • Sardines
Non-heme iron sources:
  • Beans
  • Green leafy vegetables like broccoli, spinach, kale
  • Seeds like pumpkin, sesame, flax and hemp
  • Dried fruits like raisins, prunes and apricot
  • Fruits like apple, pear and pomegranate
  • Legumes

3. Vitamin D deficiency

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that acts in the body like a steroid hormone and is produced on exposure to sunlight. It aids iron, magnesium, zinc, and phosphate absorption. It also aids calcium absorption and helps in the formation of strong bones and teeth. Not just bones and teeth, vitamin D also builds immunity in the body and fights off attacking viruses and bacteria. (Vitamin D and calcium for building strong bones in kids)

HeALTH CONCERNS caused due to Vitamin D deficiency

The deficiency of vitamin D prevents the absorption of calcium in the body. Calcium deficiency causes disorders, such as hypocalcemia and hypophosphatemia (rickets), as well as the weakening of bones, certain types of malignancies and lowered immunity. It may also cause growth delay, bone loss and there is an increased risk of fractures.

Dietary sources of Vitamin D

Sunlight is the natural source of Vitamin D. However, other dietary sources of vitamin D are:

  • Cod liver oil
  • Fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, sardines
  • Egg yolk
  • Banana
  • Milk and milk products
  • Fortified cereals
  • Mushroom
  • Ragi

4. Vitamin A deficiency

Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin that is important. It aids in the formation and maintenance of healthy skin, teeth, bones, and cell membranes, as well. Also, it creates eye pigments, which are essential for vision. For Vitamin A to travel to the required parts of the body, like the retina at the back of the eye, it has to partner with another mineral- Zinc.

Dietary vitamin A comes in two forms:

  • Preformed vitamin A  (Retinol): It is derived from animal sources.
  • Pro-vitamin A (Carotenoid): It is obtained from plant sources.
HeALTH CONCERNS caused due to Vitamin A deficiency

A lack of vitamin A or vitamin A deficiency can cause both acute and chronic eye damage, leading to blindness. Vitamin A deficiency can also weaken the immune system and increase mortality, especially in children and women who are pregnant or lactating.

Dietary sources of Vitamin A

The dietary sources of vitamin A are:

  • Organ meat
  • Fish liver oil
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Carrot
  • Green leafy vegetables

Orange-coloured fruits and vegetables like carrots, mangoes, apricot, and sweet potatoes are rich in vitamin A, hence helps to protect your kid from any eye disease.

5. Vitamin B9-Folate deficiency

Vitamin B9, also known as folic acid or folate, is an essential component for the growth and development of the human body. Folate aids in the formation of DNA and RNA, as well as protein metabolism. Dietary folate is also necessary for the production of healthy red blood cells. And it is especially important in times of fast growth, such as during pregnancy and the development of the foetus.

HeALTH CONCERNS caused due to Vitamin B9-Folate deficiency

Folate deficiency in children and babies can cause brain and spinal cord underdevelopment, growth issues, anaemia, and congenital defects. (7 brain-boosting foods for your child)

Dietary sources of Vitamin B9-Folate

The sources of Vitamin B9 include:

  • Green leafy veggies
  • Fresh fruits
  • Nuts
  • Beans
  • Fortified cereals and bread
  • Seafood
  • Eggs
  • Peanuts

6. Vitamin B12 – Cobalamin deficiency

Cobalamin is important for the production of blood cells and to sustain healthy nerve cells in the body. However, vegetarians and vegans may not obtain enough vitamin B12 in their meals and may need to take a B12 supplement. (Foods with B vitamins and their importance)

HeALTH CONCERNS caused due to Vitamin B12 – Cobalamin deficiency

A vitamin B12 deficiency causes megaloblastic anemia. The diseases caused by nutritional deficiencies of Vitamin B12 can also lead to a number of symptoms including weakness, exhaustion, constipation, a decreased appetite, and weight. Failure to meet the minimum requirements can also show negative effects on the nervous system and nutritional deficiencies symptoms such as confusion, depression and dementia.

Dietary sources of Vitamin B12 – Cobalamin

The sources of Vitamin B12 include:

  • Dairy products
  • Fish
  • Meat
  • Beef liver
  • Fortified cereals
  • Egg

7. Zinc deficiency

Zinc is an important mineral for healthy growth, digestion, sex hormone development, and immunity in children. A deficit can have an adverse effect on your child’s hair, skin, and nails, as well as his or her cognitive function and height.

HeALTH CONCERNS caused due to zinc deficiency

Loss of appetite and decreased growth and development in babies and children are early signs of zinc deficiency. They may be angry and sluggish. The immune system of the body may be compromised, causing wounds to heal more slowly and incompletely.

Dietary sources of zinc

The sources of zinc include:

8. Magnesium deficiency

Magnesium is an important mineral in the human body. It’s not only important for bone and tooth structure but it’s also involved in over 300 enzyme processes.

HeALTH CONCERNS caused due to magnesium deficiency

The diseases caused by nutritional deficiencies of magnesium include type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, heart disease, and osteoporosis. Abnormal heart rhythm, muscular cramps, restless leg syndrome, tiredness, and headaches are the most common magnesium – nutritional deficiencies symptoms. (How magnesium can help to balance hormones in teenagers?)

Dietary sources of magnesium

The sources of magnesium include:

  • Whole grains
  • Nuts
  • Dark chocolate
  • Green leafy vegetables

Almost every vitamin can be lacking in some way. However, the aforementioned flaws are by far the most prevalent. Children, young women, the elderly, vegetarians, and vegans appear to be the most vulnerable to a variety of deficits.

Eating a well-balanced diet rich in full, nutrient-dense foods is the greatest approach to avoid deficiencies. Supplements, on the other hand, maybe essential for people who cannot get enough from their food alone.

Foods to avoid

Refined sugar: Excessive sugar impairs cognitive skills as well as self control. Moreover, sugar damages the protein in our body, resulting in ageing of organs, which further compromises immunity, growth and functioning. Greatest source of sugar in the average kid’s diet are sugary snacks and beverages like cookies, cakes, candies, fruit juice, soda, and sports drinks. Everything that the child picks up to eat today has strains of added sugar in some form or the other.

Preservatives: Most of the packaged food companies are adding artificial preservatives to delay spoilage and contamination in foods.  Artificial preservatives such as nitrates, benzoates, sulfites, sorbates, parabens, formaldehyde, BHT, BHA and several others can cause serious health hazards such as hypersensitivity, allergy, asthma, hyperactivity, neurological damage.

Refined oil: The high temperature involved in the refining process removes all the natural and beneficial substances from the oil, which is not good for the digestive as well as respiratory health and ultimately affects your immunity.

All about coconut oil benefits: Skin, Hair, Body and Oral hygiene

about coconut oil benefits

Coconut oil is widely considered as a “True Superfood”. This is because there aren’t a lot of things that coconut oil can’t do. While talking about coconut oil benefits, it can be considered as “Do it all miracle oil”.

Coconut oil is derived from the lifeline of the health tree i.e., coconut tree. It is well known for its taste, health and other versatile benefits that you may not be even aware of. Over decades, coconut oil has gained its fame as a healthiest food for skin, hair and body and the benefits are beyond your expectations.

Let’s get aware of what all this hype is about with the science-backed health benefits of coconut oil for skin, hair, body, oral health and others.

Composition of coconut oil:

Coconut oil is rich in Medium Chain Fatty acids (MCT). These MCTs are easier to burn and harder for the body to convert into fats. It is a rich source of Vitamin E and almost 100% fat.

Fatty acids found in coconut oil include –

Saturated fatty acids: Lauric acid, Myristic acid, Palmitic acids, Caprylic acid, Stearic acid, Capric acid.

Unsaturated fatty acids: Oleic acid, Linoleic acid

Types of coconut oil:

Broadly speaking, Coconut oil is classified into two: refined coconut oil and virgin coconut oil.

Refined coconut oil is produced through heat exposure. It is refined, bleached, deodorized and made from dried coconut. Moreover, it is less expensive, has a neutral scent and higher smoke point. Usually recommended for cooking and have fewer nutritional properties.

Virgin coconut oil is a pure form of oil and is produced without heat exposure. It is made from cold pressing and is unbleached. Moreover, it retains all the natural aroma and has a lower smoke point. It tastes great and has numerous health and nutritional benefits. It is recommended to consume this raw like a dressing.

Cold pressed coconut oil is extremely pure and raw. It has a higher smoke point and is considered better for high temperature cooking. This is usually priced higher since the extraction process retains all the nutrients.

Benefits of coconut oil for skin:

Apart from cooking, coconut oil has some outstanding benefits for skin too. It shines in the beauty product sector too. Read below to explore more about coconut oil benefits for skin.

Treating dry skin:

Skin hydration is an issue faced by most of us. Coconut oil helps in protecting and retaining skin hydration with the help of fatty acids present in them. If you have oily face skin, then try to avoid its use. (Home remedies for dry skin)

Protection against UV radiation: Natural sunscreen

Coconut oil protects your skin from the harmful UV radiations by acting as a barrier between your skin and the radiations. This acts as a natural sunscreen as few studies have stated that it can block about 15-20% of the sun’s UV radiation. Although this may be true but it won’t work as a complete protection. (How to apply sunscreen)

Reduces Inflammation:

The major reasons for skin inflammation include eczema, dermatitis and psoriasis. Since, coconut oil possess anti-inflammatory properties, it is a quick fix that penetrates the skin easily.

Treating Pimples:

Coconut oil contains MCTs that help in reducing pimples or acne by killing the bacterias responsible for this. Therefore, application of a thin layer of coconut oil to the affected areas works. (Home remedies to reduce pimples)

Keeps you safe from infections:

As coconut oil contains lauric acid and other essential fatty acids too, it possesses antimicrobial, antifungal and antiviral properties. This helps in prevention of infection in the body. Consumption and application both work well. (Immunity boosting foods)

Heals wounds:

Coconut oil helps in wound healing by increasing the production of collagen. It is considered as an important wound healing protein.

Anti-ageing:

Apart from soothing, smoothing and nourishing the skin, coconut oil acts as an anti-ageing serum. It is rich in vitamins, vitamin A and fatty acids that reduce wrinkles, fine lines, damaged skin and hyperpigmentation. Moreover, it improves the skin elasticity to a greater extent. (How sugar affects your skin)

Stretch marks:

Coconut oil can be an effective remedy to reduce stretch marks. Application of a mixture of warm coconut oil with pure kapoor (camphor) works best.

Treats baby rashes:

Baby’s skin is quite sensitive. Rashes caused by diapers and heat can be treated with the help of coconut oil. Since coconut oil has soothing and hydrating properties, it reduces the inflammation thus giving relief from itching and irritation. (Home remedies to treat heat rash)

Benefits of coconut oil for hair:

Coconut oil is not only beneficial for the skin but also plays an important role in hair nourishment. Mentioned below are few benefits of coconut oil for hair:

Prevents damage:

Your hair is more vulnerable when wet. When the hair is wet it undergoes structural changes by absorbing water. This results in hair damage and hair fall. Applying coconut oil before and after hair wash prevents damage by reducing protein loss. If applied before, it reduces the amount of damage during washing whereas application of the same after bath prevents damage caused by friction and styling. Moreover, it keeps your hair soft and smooth. (Hair fall home remedies)

Makes your hair shine:

Coconut oil helps in hair shine as it penetrates the scalp much better than other mineral oils. It protects the hair and locks the moisture thus, providing shine to the hair strands. This is the secret of long and shiny hairs.

Protects your hair:

Coconut oil contains essential properties that are important for revamping damaged hair. The nutrient in the oil nourishes the scalp thus protecting it from damage. Its chemical structure is so superior that it helps in protecting the hair from the environmental and cosmetic damages.

Aids hair growth:

Longer, thicker and shinier hair can be obtained from coconut oil. In addition, coconut oil helps in aiding hair growth by reducing breakage, moisturizing the hair, reducing protein loss and protection against environmental damage. It also promotes hair growth by removing excess sebum from the hair follicles. For this to work best, you need to make it a regular beauty regimen. (Reasons of hair fall in kids and remedies)

Prevents lice:

The initial step of lice prevention can be usage of coconut oil. Massaging coconut oil along with tea tree oil kills the lice. Alternatively, you can use apple cider vinegar to wash off the lice eggs after the coconut oil treatment.

Protects hair from sun UV radiations:

Studies state that application of coconut oil protects the hair from the sun’s harmful radiations. It may work as a weak sunscreen.

Treats dandruff:

Coconut oil has antibacterial and antifungal properties. That is why frequent massage of warm coconut oil reduces dandruff. (Home remedies for dry and itchy scalp)

Benefits of coconut oil for oral hygiene:

Coconut oil for oral hygiene has been used since decades. Oil pulling is the natural way of preventing any oral health issues. It helps in maintaining the oral hygiene by

  • Killing the harmful bacterias
  • Reduce bad breaths
  • Prevents dental plaque
  • Prevents tooth decay (Importance of teeth brushing in kids)
  • Preventing gum disease
  • Reduce build-up of food debris
  • Prevents formation of film on tongue
How to oil pull?

It’s simple! Oil pulling is more like an oil mouthwash. Swish coconut oil in your mouth for 15-20 minutes and spit out followed by brushing. The reason behind doing this is, every time you oil pull, the fatty acids present in the oil traps the bacteria and removes them from the mouth. Isn’t it an interesting fact about coconut oil benefits?

Coconut oil drinking benefits: Body care
Boost heart health:

Coconut oil may help in boosting heart health. It contains saturated fatty acids but these work differently as compared to the other saturated fats. It increases the healthy cholesterol (HDL, good fat) in the body while lowering the harmful effects of LDL. Additionally, the MCTs present in this oil are not involved in the cholesterol transport. On the whole, it may help boost heart health.

Quick source of energy:

MCTs present in the coconut oil are easily digested and go directly from your gut to the liver. The body uses them as a quick energy source without increasing the blood sugar levels. (Power foods all kids need)

Helps in fat burning:

Coconut oil helps in the proper functioning of the thyroid and endocrine system. It boosts the body’s metabolic rates which aids weight loss. The major fats from coconut oil are converted into energy rather than being stored as a fat. (Natural ways for weight loss)

Reduce hunger:

Studies shows that coconut oil is responsible for satiety. It reduces hunger by producing ketones in the body. This aids to weight loss also as the intake of the calories reduces. (Tips to increase appetite in kids)

Improve Cognitive (Brain) Functions:

One of the lesser-known facts about coconut oil benefits is its role in improving brain function. The MCTs present in this oil break down into super rich ketones which act as an alternative energy source (fuel) for the brain. This helps in boosting memory. Moreover, it has been studied that it enhances the abilities of language and orientation in Alzheimer patients. (Foods for brain development in kids)

Controls blood sugar:

Recent work on the impact of coconut oil on the blood sugar level states that it helps in promoting insulin secretion. In addition to that, it helps in stabilizing the blood sugar levels and  encourages effective use of blood glucose.

Boost Bone Health:

Coconut oil helps boost bone health in two ways. Firstly, being a rich source of antioxidants, it neutralizes the free radicals and reduces oxidative stress. Secondly, it helps in the absorption of calcium, magnesium and other fat-soluble vitamins and minerals. In addition, it is useful in reducing the symptoms of osteoporosis and arthritis. (Bone development in kids)

Reduce stress:

The combination of two properties of the virgin coconut oil helps in relaxing the body. This oil can be used in aromatherapy which helps in body and mind relaxation. Gentle massage of coconut oil eases the stress.

Balance hormones:

Hormonal imbalance is quite a matter of concern these days. Coconut oil is rich in lauric acid. It helps in balancing the hormones and may have a good effect on the estrogen levels. It is good to consume this during menopause. (Foods to manage hormone imbalance)

Everything is okay, but how much coconut oil per day?

Even though coconut oil serves abundant health benefits, moderate use of it is required.  It should be treated like any other fat that you come across. You can enjoy all the benefits of coconut when consumed in adequate amounts.

Usually, it is best to limit yourself to about 2 tablespoons of coconut oil in a day.

Health benefits of coconut water:

Not only coconut oil but also coconut water plays an important role in the body.

  • Good source of hydration
  • Great source of calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium (Calcium rich foods)
  • Help in preventing kidney stones
  • Instant energy source
  • Reduce blood pressure
  • Aids in digestion (Probiotic foods)
  • Healthy skin
  • Hangover cure
  • Treats flatulence, stomach ulcer and gastrointestinal issues
  • Prevention against infections
  • Eliminates worms (Deworming in kids)
Other benefits of coconut oil:

Apart from having health benefits coconut oil helps in some non-health related issues too. This makes coconut oil a whole.

  • Stain removal
  • Natural deodorant
  • Wood shine
  • Makeup removal
  • Massage
  • Base for exfoliants
  • Natural highlighter
  • Nasal drops
  • Hygiene wash

10 Proven Activities for Brain Development of Child

Brain power improves by brain use, just as our body strength grows with exercise. A child’s brains undergo an amazing period of development from birth to three years as in the first few years of life, more than 1 million new neural connections are formed every second. The brain is the command center of the human body. A newborn baby has all of the brain cells (neurons) they’ll have for the rest of their life, but it’s the connections between these cells that really make the brain work. Brain connections enable us to move, think, communicate and do just about everything.

The early childhood years are crucial for making these connections. The brain development of child is influenced by many factors such as the kid’s environment, relationships, daily activities and of course eating habits (Know some foods helps in brain development of child). As soon as the baby is born, his/ her brain is ready to learn and they depend upon parents, family members and other caregivers to help them to develop the right skill to become independent and lead a healthy and successful life.

Many parents ask how they can help their child’s brain development. The best way is to actively engage your child through everyday activities like playing, reading and being there when he/she feels stress.

ACTIVITIES to encourage brain development of child:
Interaction:

Quality interaction is the key for cognitive development. Responding to your baby’s coos and cries, making eye contact and showing them funny faces is the type of interaction you can do in their early months and soon you will see them responding in their own sign language.

Hiding game:

By the age of 5 to 7 months babies start to recognize objects or the knowledge that something still exists even when it’s not visible. Showing any object like their feeding bottle and then moving it out of their sight and asking your baby where is the bottle gone, helps them to think and use their brain which contributes to brain development of child.

Introduce books:

Books play a vital role in brain development of child as well as motor skill development. You can introduce board books from 6 months and paper books from 1 year. Show different colors, shapes and objects through these books or just allow your baby to turn the pages by themselves and let them observe and memorize things.

Story telling:

Reading and storytelling with babies and children promotes brain development and imagination, develops language and emotions, and strengthens relationships. When children listen to a story, their imagination is on steroids! They’re picturing characters, they’re living the plot and they’re visualizing the setting; they’re sowing the first seeds of creativity. Encourage them to talk to you about the plot and characters, ask them how they think a character could behave, let them ask questions whenever they feel like they’re simply learning how to express themselves.

Block games:

As soon as the baby starts sitting you can introduce the block games. There are lots of block games available in the market, you can choose according to your baby’s age. Block games help kids to express their imagination and helps them to understand different shapes and colors. Create simple patterns with blocks and ask your toddler try to copy the patterns. This is a simple way to help your child observe patterns.

Jigsaw Puzzle games:

Jigsaw puzzles are a great way to develop your child’s spatial perception, coordination, problem-solving, cognitive skills and fine motor skills. These puzzles are awesome for their brain development. But always choose which is age appropriate as if it’s too difficult, kids get impatient and give up. For one year olds you can choose a puzzle with a few pieces whereas for kids over 3 year, try a 16 to 20-piece jigsaw puzzle with large pieces. Older children can handle even more difficult puzzles.

Memory games:

Playing memory games can improve brain functions, such as attention, concentration, and focus.  Simple matching activity for younger children, increase or decrease complexity by changing the number of elements. You can also show any picture for a limited time and ask your child to memorize things in the picture and then list the objects in the picture without seeing them. Finding the difference between two pictures is also a good memory game for a toddler. (How to increase concentration and focus in kids?)

Obstacle games (jumping, running and skipping):

Physical activities not only help in physical development but also aids in brain development. Obstacle games are easy to set up in your room or garden. You can create a simple obstacle for younger kids and a little creativity for older kids which may include something to walk on, crawl under, crawl through, jump, throw, hop, solve a riddle, the possibilities are endless.

Spending time in nature:

Another tip to improve concentration in kids is spending time in nature. Research suggests that natural environments could benefit brain development and may also improve concentration power in children. Even a 20-minute walk in the park could help improve concentration in kids more than a walk of the same length in an urban setting.

Games for 5 +kids:

If your child is above 5 years you can start with games like chess, sudoku, crossword and math games

Parent’s guide for the Anger Management in Kids

the anger management in kids

Are you shocked by your child’s anger? You are worried and do not understand what to do further? Relax!!!! Anger is a common and healthy human emotion. We all experience it at times in different situations. The kids also come across this. Before they face trouble and lose control, it is important to teach kids ways to identify their emotions; and express and manage them without harming their own personalities. In this article, we will understand anger in child, the anger management strategies, tips to control anger and foods that can help.

WHATSAPP for concerns like Speech Delay, Low Weight, Frequent Illness, Hyperactivity, Low Concentration, Weak Eyesight, Improper Sleep, Pigmentation, Pores, Face Marks, Fine Lines , Lactation etc.

What is Anger in Child?

Anger is a strong emotion that the child experiences when something goes wrong or when someone wrongs them. Stress, frustration, and irritation are common feelings associated with it. Anger is something that everyone experiences from time to time. It’s a totally typical reaction to challenging or stressful conditions.

Anger becomes a problem only when it is shown excessively and begins to interfere with daily functioning and relationships. Anger can range from mild irritation to rage in intensity. It can be difficult to keep your child’s emotions under check in these situations, which may lead them to act in ways they wouldn’t normally.

Reasons for anger in child:

Multiple factors can contribute to the child’s anger. The common reasons that bring out anger in a child:

  • Disappointment: Kids don’t get what they want
  • Helplessness: Kids are forced to do something which they might not feel like doing
  • Sadness: Kids feel sad due to poor performance in academics or rejections by their peers
  • Fear: Kids fear losing something or someone like fear of losing parent when forced to go to school for the first time
  • Impatience: Kids lose their patience easily and this might cause anger
  • ADHD or learning disability
  • Lack of sleep (How sleep & brain development is connected?)

HELP kids to identify their anger:

Firstly, the most important thing in managing anger for kids is to help them understand their feelings. The child should be able to communicate their anger, depression or frustration. But how do you help them identify anger? Well!! You can play games such as “Displaying emoji faces” with your kids. Say, for example, you can ask your child to show a happy, sad, or angry face and then ask them the reason why someone might have that feeling. Apart from this, you can encourage them to read stories about emotions and have open discussions about the good and bad feelings that they possess. (How to improve concentration in kids?)

Help them to differentiate between anger & aggression:

Anger is a human feeling or emotion while aggression is the behavior shown as a result of anger and is often expressed in the form of destruction or violence. Explain the difference between angry feelings and aggressive behavior. Aggressive behavior like temper tantrums, disrespect, fighting, spitting, throwing things, slamming doors, etc., are the result of anger and frustration. Teach them, “ Getting angry is fine but showing the above aggressive behavior is totally unacceptable”. Help them to make sure they are in control of their behavior when they are angry. Also, try to understand the reasons behind their anger or frustration. (Foods that help in brain development?)

anger management strategies for children:

It’s never too early to educate your child on how to manage his/her anger rather than allowing it to control him/her. However, keep in mind that mastering these anger management strategies is challenging for young children. They will require your assistance – as well as a great deal of practice:

  1. Put an end:  The child who is angry and out of control, should be separated and taken away from the other person with whom he/she is angry.  It is better to walk out of the place.
  2. Keep cool: Teach your child how to utilize calming techniques/strategies when he/she is experiencing bodily signs of anger. Taking deep breaths, drinking a glass of water, playing with toys, distracting with songs or stories can help the child.
  3. Think and act: Explain to your child to question herself/himself in situations that provoke their anger, like “ What does this bring to me?” Help them understand that actions taken in anger and frustration are worthless. Understanding and making right decisions are useful.
  4. Respect other’s feelings: You can help your child to show empathy to others. Teach your child to respect others’ feelings as he/she wants his/her feelings to be respected.
  5. Identify potential solutions: Always find possible solutions that help both parties to compromise. Accepting the mistakes and apologizing can often bring peace between them.

How to control anger in child?

The anger in child must be controlled and kids must learn appropriate ways to cope up with their anger. Instead of saying “Don’t do that”, teach them other healthy ways to express their anger.

Some tips to control anger in child:
  • Going for a walk
  • Deep breathing
  • Blowing bubbles
  • Playing with toys
  • Counting numbers and alphabets together, say 1-A, 2-B,3-C, and so on.
  • Visualising happy moments
  • Drawing and colouring
  • Listening to soothing music
  • Reading storybooks
  • Singing a song

You should also remain calm when your child is angry. When your child is in angry mode, you don’t shout or take a lecture. Rather calm your child by speaking in a low and neutral tone. They can’t process information in anger, so keep repeating the same phrases like “ I understand”, “Let me help you”, “It’s OK” etc. If you show anger or shout at them during this situation, it teaches them it is alright to yell or raise the voice in anger. Take them to a calm place and recognise or identify their triggers. Understand what’s making them angry and help them practice coping skills.

Set the anger management rules:

You have to set the anger management rules and list out the pleasant and unpleasant behaviors that are acceptable when the child is angry.  Unpleasant behaviors such as slamming the doors, raising the voice, destroying property, and using foul language should not be encouraged.

Teach kids to use anger in a healthy manner:

As the saying goes “ Home is the first school and parents are the first teachers”, it’s you who have to set an example by showing them how to deal with your emotions when you are angry. Kids usually follow the actions of their parents. If you lose your temper, they will likely follow the same. Instead, if you handle your anger in a kind and gentle manner, they get the hang of that too. Refer to the situations when you got frustrated and explain to them how you dealt with it. Expressing your feelings verbally will teach kids to talk about their emotions.

You should also apologize to your kids when you lose your temper. Explain to them the reason and discuss what you should have done instead of yelling or screaming.

Offer rewards for their behaviours:

You can follow a reward system to encourage your kids to follow the anger rules. Consider a sticker/ star reward chart and put a sticker /star each time your child follows anger rules. On the other hand, you can remove a sticker/ star when they do not follow the rules. And based on the stars/ stickers earned, you can gift them their favorite toys or color pens. This inculcates healthy and positive anger management skills in kids.

TAKE IT SLOW AND Be patient:

It is not easy to teach children new ways to cope up with anger and it takes time. Keep repeating and practicing things. Take it slow and work on one behaviour at a time. Observe the changes and reward them.

Foods that can help to control anger in child:

Magnesium:

In our body, Magnesium is responsible for nerve transmission and nerve-muscle coordination. In other words, it protects against the excessive excitement in a child (which can be traumatic). There is enough research going on how Magnesium can help in fixing or preventing neurological disorders. Banana, avocado, pumpkin seeds and spinach are some food sources of magnesium.(What are some disorders in which magnesium can help?)

Complex carbohydrates:

Having whole grains and less processed food and flours reduces risk of blood sugar spikes, also they feel full for longer, this will prevent them from unnecessary snacking. It also enhances mood and encourages better sleep. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans and lentils are carbs rich foods.(Importance of good carbs for kids)

Banana:

Bananas contain dopamine that helps in enhancing mood. They also contain vitamin B, A, C & B6 which helps nervous system and also aids sleep. Bananas are also a good source of magnesium which enhances mood and tryptophan which is used in cure of anxiety and depression.

Dark Chocolate:

A study showed that eating cocoa for five days improved blood flow to the brain. A small part of dark chocolate helps the brain to discharge endorphins and boost serotonin levels. It helps in lowering stress hormones and decreasing anxiety levels. What better to give child than this favorite food. (Check this recipe for Hazelnut Dark Choco Balls)

WALNUTS:

Walnuts look like human brain’s shape and can help brain health. It contains omega3s, vitamin E, melatonin and antioxidants which are helpful for the human brain. It decreases the enhanced vulnerability to oxidative stress. And it offers the mixed mood-boosting elements of omega-3 fatty acids, tryptophan, and vitamin B6. Walnuts can not only boost happiness but also help with the anger management in child. (What are other benefits of walnuts?)

Puberty in girls

During parenting you experience many things while watching your kids grow. Infant (0 to 1 years old), toddler (1 to 3 years old), early childhood (4 to 8 years old), middle childhood (9 to 11 years old) and adolescence (12 to 18 years old), as each stage passes you observe some mental and physical development in your child. During the first three stages (Infant, toddler and early childhood) kids generally go through many natural physical changes of growth. These first 8 years of kids are extremely important for their healthy development and lifelong learnings. Cognitive, social, emotional, language and physical development during this time plays an important role in their life. At every stage a child needs you to understand the learnings and changes that they are experiencing around them. As they enter the puberty phase it becomes more important to be with them. This is the time for some major physical and hormonal changes, which may pop up some questions, which have to be answered properly, But the main question is what puberty is and at what age puberty starts?

What is Puberty? At what age puberty starts?

Puberty is the time when a boy or girl goes through a series of biological and physical transformations. Everyone has experienced this phase in life. It is a transition from childhood to adolescence. Teens go through some changes in their body and hormone levels during this phase. Puberty often begins early in girls as it falls between the ages of 8 to 13 in them. Although every girl has her own unique journey and puberty timing differs in each girl, it definitely brings some hormonal, physical and emotional changes in girls which are absolutely normal. 8 years of age sounds really young for seeing any physical changes. So, it is a little bit awkward to discuss puberty stages and the female reproductive system with your young girls, but it is important to start educating them on these topics before changes happen to best prepare them. It will make them much more comfortable to understand and accept the changes.

Sings of puberty among girls

Breast development: It is the first visible sign of puberty among most of the girls. One can notice “breast buds”, little bumps under the nipples. It is normal for the left and right breast to grow at different speeds. Its also normal for breast buds to be tender or sore, usually it improves with time. A sports bra can be a good choice to wear at this stage.

Body hair: In about 15-20% girls public hairs may be the first sign of puberty. These hairs begin to grow under the arms, around genital areas and on the legs. It is another sign of puberty among girls.

Vaginal discharge: This is a sign of growing numbers of estrogen hormones in the body. Girls experience a small amount of clear or white vaginal discharge that starts about 6-12 months before their first periods. It is considered as a sign of puberty among girls.

Periods: Girls usually get their first periods within 1-2 years after the development of breast buds. It is important to be aware that periods are a normal natural process of growing up. It can be irregular during the first few months as the body is adapting to some fast physical changes. Normal menstrual cycle can be from 21 days to 35 day. (Which foods can help during menstruation?)) Cramps and pains are normal with periods. There is nothing to worry about. But if menstrual cramps are severe and affecting school and normal day to day activities, talk to gynecologists.

Some other changes during puberty phase
Brain

Girls obviously face fast changes during puberty phase and thus their brain needs time to adjust. (Top 10 foods to boost kids brain power) It affects their behavior and social skills. You may observe some sort of clumsiness in their activities.

Bones

If girls hit puberty at an older age they may have lower bone density and can face bone issues further in life. so, it is the ideal time to invest in bone health. Including calcium and vitamin D rich foods in their diet can help them to get strong bones for lifetime. (How vitamin D can help to absorb calcium?)

Weight

There might be an increase in weight. (How to manage weight issues?) During puberty the brain instructs the ovaries to make female hormones estrogen. This hormone is responsible for the change in size and shape of a girl’s body. Fat can be seen around the upper arms, thighs and backs. Hips tend to become wider and curvy. Their organs like stomach, intestine also increase in size during this phase. More healthy and nutritious foods with protein, minerals calcium and iron should be included in their diet at this point of time.

Height

Girls may grow taller during puberty. While entering into puberty girls can see an increase in height by 7-8 cm per year. Peak growth in girls’ height can be seen 6-12 months before the onset of their periods.

Sleep patterns

During puberty or you can say teenage there is a pattern developed in kids of staying up late at night and sleeping longer in morning. (Which foods can help to get better sleep naturally?) This happens because their body takes time to produce melatonin, a sleep promoting hormone. Sleep research suggests that a teenager should get at least 8 to 9 hours of sleep. But most of them get only 6-7 hours.

Skin and hairs

During puberty phase oil glands become more active. Due to this girls face acne issues. (How to treat my kids acne?) Sometimes it’s just an occasional pimple that occurs right before each menstrual cycle. But for some teens it can be a chronic condition which is known as acne. Mostly oily skin and acne issues go hand in hand. Many teen girls also face excessive sweat on the palm, soles of feet, under the arms, and in the scalp. Some teenage girls experience hair fall as they enter puberty. (What is the root cause of hair fall in kids?) Though it is curable and can be managed by following a healthy diet.

PCOS IN TEENS

PCOS stands for polycystic ovary syndrome. It has become a common condition in teenage girls nowadays. Women make a female hormone that is entrogen. But she also makes male hormone testosterone in small amounts. The girls with PCOS make little extra of these male hormones. Though it is not clear what exactly causes PCOS, it is said that the genes you inherit from your family is the main cause for this hormone imbalance. If a mother has PCOS, daughters are at high risk of having it. The signs and symptoms include:-  Irregular menstrual periods, very heavy and pain full periods, facial hair growth, acne and weight problems. If your girl has any of these issues, consult your gynecologist. PCOS is treatable and can be cured by making some changes in lifestyle in terms of diet and exercise.

Nutrients that can help during puberty
Protein

Girls need a balanced meal with adequate amounts of protein during puberty. It helps in growth and repair of muscles and tissues. It also generates enzymes and hormones. Protein rich diets help them to feel energetic throughout the day. (How can I provide needed protein to my kids?)

Iron

Many girls lead to iron deficiency and anemia. (How to overcome from iron deficiency?) This happens due to lack of iron because of an unbalanced diet. As per RDA (Recommended dietary allowances) guidelines 2020, the iron need for a girl ranges from 28-30mg/d. A girl needs more iron during puberty to restore their menstrual loss. It helps in muscle growth and increases blood volume too.

Calcium

Girls need at least 800-1000mg of calcium per day. (How calcium helps in building strong bones?) They need it to build strong bones which can help them later in life. Deficiency of calcium can increase the risk of developing osteoporosis (Condition in which bones become weak and can easily break). Consumption of vitamin D is equally important as it helps in absorption of calcium.

Zinc

The RDA for zinc is highest for teen girls ranging from 9- 12mg/day. Deficiency of zinc can lead to growth retardation in girls. It also promotes bone mineralization during puberty and helps to increase bone density.

Vitamin A

This is the most essential nutrient to include in a girl’s diet. It helps in strengthening the uterus during puberty phase. Besides this it promotes healthy skin and optimum growth. It repairs tissue and helps in vision too.(How can we absorb vitamin A from foods?)

Neem is incredibly effective in treating acne issues. As girls enter into teenage their oil glands become more active and causes acne. The anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties of neem have a positive impact on any kind of pimples, black or white heads. It control the harmful effects of acne causing bacteria. It also has antioxidants and medicinal properties which helps to purifies blood and promotes regular periods. Consuming neem leaves can help to fix period pain as it is an excellent pain reliever.
