Coconut oil is derived from the lifeline of the health tree i.e., coconut tree. It is well known for its taste, health and other versatile benefits that you may not be even aware of. Over decades, coconut oil has gained its fame as a healthiest food for skin, hair and body and the benefits are beyond your expectations.

Let’s get aware of what all this hype is about with the science-backed health benefits of coconut oil for skin, hair, body, oral health and others.

Composition of coconut oil:

Coconut oil is rich in Medium Chain Fatty acids (MCT). These MCTs are easier to burn and harder for the body to convert into fats. It is a rich source of Vitamin E and almost 100% fat.

Fatty acids found in coconut oil include –

Saturated fatty acids: Lauric acid, Myristic acid, Palmitic acids, Caprylic acid, Stearic acid, Capric acid.

Unsaturated fatty acids: Oleic acid, Linoleic acid

Types of coconut oil:

Broadly speaking, Coconut oil is classified into two: refined coconut oil and virgin coconut oil.

Refined coconut oil is produced through heat exposure. It is refined, bleached, deodorized and made from dried coconut. Moreover, it is less expensive, has a neutral scent and higher smoke point. Usually recommended for cooking and have fewer nutritional properties.

Virgin coconut oil is a pure form of oil and is produced without heat exposure. It is made from cold pressing and is unbleached. Moreover, it retains all the natural aroma and has a lower smoke point. It tastes great and has numerous health and nutritional benefits. It is recommended to consume this raw like a dressing.

Cold pressed coconut oil is extremely pure and raw. It has a higher smoke point and is considered better for high temperature cooking. This is usually priced higher since the extraction process retains all the nutrients.

Benefits of coconut oil for skin:

Recent work on the impact of coconut oil on the blood sugar level states that it helps in promoting insulin secretion. In addition to that, it helps in stabilizing the blood sugar levels and  encourages effective use of blood glucose.

Coconut oil helps boost bone health in two ways. Firstly, being a rich source of antioxidants, it neutralizes the free radicals and reduces oxidative stress. Secondly, it helps in the absorption of calcium, magnesium and other fat-soluble vitamins and minerals. In addition, it is useful in reducing the symptoms of osteoporosis and arthritis. (Bone development in kids)

Reduce stress:

The combination of two properties of the virgin coconut oil helps in relaxing the body. This oil can be used in aromatherapy which helps in body and mind relaxation. Gentle massage of coconut oil eases the stress.

Hormonal imbalance is quite a matter of concern these days. Coconut oil is rich in lauric acid. It helps in balancing the hormones and may have a good effect on the estrogen levels. It is good to consume this during menopause. (Foods to manage hormone imbalance)

Soaking and Sprouting of seeds: 8 Proven Benefits

WHATSAPP for concerns like Speech Delay, Low Weight, Frequent Illness, Hyperactivity, Low Concentration, Weak Eyesight, Improper Sleep, Pigmentation, Pores, Face Marks, Fine Lines , Lactation etc.

Soaking

In traditional diets of our ancestors, soaking and sprouting of seeds was key to preparing food. Dal, rice, beans, nuts, seeds and other whole grains contain phytic acid. Soaking for a few hours before you cook helps to break down the phytic acid which makes it easy for the body to absorb all the nutrients and also digest the food better. Study shows that our grains contain arsenic, a compound found in earth‘s crust. By soaking the grain prior to cooking, the arsenic level can come down by 25-30%. Soaking grains also release compounds called lower order inositols – specifically myo- and d-chiro-inositol. And these compounds help support blood sugar regulation, metabolic and hormonal health (PCOS).Soaking of rice and dal can be done up till 4 hours. ( why eating lentils is important?) For oats and most nuts, soaking overnight is good.

Soaking in different culture

Traditionally In India, rice and lentils are fermented for at least two days before they are prepared as idli and dosas, or flour is fermented to make Bhatura; Africans soak corn overnight before adding it to soups and ferment corn for days to prepare a traditional dish; Welsh prepared similar dish by soaking oats overnight. Latin Americans ferment rice for long before cooking; Ethiopians make their distinctive bread by fermenting a grain called teff for several days; (Recipe of teff bread) Mexican corn cakes are fermented for two weeks in banana leaves; Americans and Europeans used fermented starter to Bake bread, cookies and cake. The Chinese were the first people to carry moong dal (mung bean) and sprout for consumption as they sailed on voyages overseas.

Sprouting of seeds

Sprouting involves soaking seeds, draining water and leaving them until they germinate. This germination process usually begins with the seeds being soaked for several hours. The soaked seeds are then exposed to the right combination of temperature and moisture, and allowed to grow for two to seven days. The end product is sprout. During sprouting, the seed releases enzymes that lays the nutritional foundation for it to become a plant. So, just when the seed sprouts and is sufficiently loaded with nutrients and enzymes, we consume it. These enzymes also help in our digestion process.

Soaking and sprouting of seeds are gaining popularity because of their highly concentrated nutritional benefits. Sprouts are low in calories and rich in fiber, enzymes, protein and other micronutrients. Following are some health benefits, after knowing them you wouldn’t stop yourself from adding sprouts to your daily diet.

Health benefits of Soaking and Sprouting:

Here are some benefits of soaking and sprouting:

Improves nutrient contents:

Almost all the whole grains, nuts and legumes are high in fiber, B vitamins, iron, zinc and magnesium and protein. Studies show that sprouting may increase these nutrient contents even more.

Helps in digestion

The concentration of fiber increases in sprouted grains. Fiber is one of the most important components for maintaining gut health. Fiber nourishes the good bacteria in the gut and promotes elimination and detoxification of the colon. (How to improve gut health?)

Break down anti nutrient contents:

Anti nutrients are compounds that reduce the absorption of certain nutrients within your body. Enzymes created during sprouting also break down the phytic acid present in some seeds. Phytic acid is also called ‘anti-nutrient’ because it makes it difficult for humans to absorb certain vitamins and minerals from food sources. By sprouting, the phytic acid of the seed breaks down and it becomes easier for humans to absorb more vitamins and minerals from the sprouted seed.

Aids in weight loss:

Sprouts are one of the best foods if you are looking for some weight loss. They are high in nutrients with very low calories. Sprouts contain a high amount of fiber that keeps you full for a long period of time. It also reduces the release of ghrelin, a hunger hormone, that tells our brain to eat more. (How to tackle obesity?)

Boost your immunity:

Consuming sprouts allow the body to absorb all the vital nutrients and antioxidants that protect and boost the immunity system. Sprouting process promotes the level of vitamin C and other antioxidants that make it easy for white blood cells to fight off infections and free radicals and hence builds strong immunity. (What are some more foods that boost immunity?)

Improves heart health:

Some sprouts contain omega 3 fatty acids which helps to control the cholesterol level in the body. The presence of potassium in sprouted grains helps reduce blood pressure level, which also reduces the risk of any cardiac problem.

Improves Eyesight:

Because of the presence of Vitamin A in sprouts, they help in improving eye health. Also the high antioxidants properties of sprouts protects the eye cells from free radicals. (What are common Eye concerns and foods to improve eye health?)

Good for skin and hairs:

Sprouts prevent premature ageing. The antioxidants present in the sprouts help combat cell damage due to free radicals that can cause premature ageing. Sprouts contains many components that helps hairs to grow healthy like: selenium in sprouts fights dandruff , zinc promotes production of sebum in the scalp, vitamin A stimulates hair follicles and help them to grow thicker and longer and presence of biotin helps in overall hair health. (Some foods for skin and hair)

Understanding the role of Prebiotics in foods for Health

Prebiotics in foods are a type of dietary fiber that humans cannot digest but the gut bacteria can. Prebiotic is a source of food for your gut’s friendly bacteria. It is a food which does not get fully digested in the body and reaches the large intestine (commonly known as GUT). The good bacteria in the large intestine eat this food and flourishes. Good bacteria multiply and win over the bad bacteria (disease causing). This allows your gut bacteria to produce nutrients for your colon cells, which helps in healthy digestion.

Some of these nutrients include short-chain fatty acids like butyrate, acetate and propionate that are released into blood circulation, consequently affecting not only the gastrointestinal tract but also other distant organs. Prebiotics should not be confused with probiotics. Each have their separate role in the battle for better gut health, where probiotics are the friendly bacteria, prebiotics in foods are food for these bacteria.

What are Probiotics foods for Gut Health?

What are probiotics foods? Probiotics are live bacteria naturally occurring in food that are good for you, your digestion and your GUT. According to a study, there are approximately 300 trillion bacteria living inside your body. Most of them reside in your gut and majority of them are quite harmless, some are helpful and a small number of them cause diseases. Whenever you get an infection, it is a sign that bad bacteria are affecting your system out of balance. At this point of time good bacteria helps in eliminating those bad ones and maintaining the balance of good bacteria again. Probiotics are the best way to flourish good bacteria in your body.

Most people consider bacteria to be a negative word. They thought that bacteria only made you sick. But Probiotics are those good bacteria that help you fight off diseases causing bad bacteria and restore the balance of both. Food habits, lifestyle and antibiotics, all of them impact the gut health of your body. Your body loses good bacteria when you fall sick and take antibiotics. At this time probiotics can help to maintain the amount of good bacteria in the gut again. The two specific types of bacteria found in probiotics are Lactobacillus and bifidobacterium. Probiotics also promote the production of natural antibodies in the body. There is no recommended daily intake for probiotics, so there is no way to know exactly what quantity is best. Therefore, add as many probiotic rich foods to your daily diet as you can.

Teething Symptoms in Babies: Teething and Diarrhea

It is a matter of joy to see your baby’s first tooth. But teething is a difficult and uncomfortable phase for kids as well as for parents. Kids become super fussy and refuse to eat or drink milk because of gum irritation. There are many teething symptoms in babies such as gum swelling and pain, drooling, biting, crying, gagging, pulling ears, facial rashes and refusing to eat. Lots of parents connect teething with diarrhea. However, there is no such evidence that can justify that teething and diarrhea are correlated. According to American academy of pediatrics, teething does not directly cause diarrhea. Babies can experience it due to many different factors other than teething. It is just a surrounding myth that teething and diarrhea are related or teething causes diarrhea.

WHATSAPP for concerns like Speech Delay, Low Weight, Frequent Illness, Hyperactivity, Low Concentration, Weak Eyesight, Improper Sleep, Pigmentation, Pores, Face Marks, Fine Lines, Lactation etc.

teething symptoms in babies

Biting and sucking: This is one of the most common teething symptoms in babies. You can notice that your baby is biting and sucking everything in hand. For them, it is a way to soothe gum irritation.

Gum pain: Eruption of teeth is a painful process. Sensitive and swollen gums can make your baby fussy.

Increased saliva: Babies chew, bite and drool more during teething phase. You may see a baby’s shirt wet all the time. This is one of the teething symptoms in babies

Facial rash: Constant moisture of drool may irritate baby’s skin and cause rash around the mouth.

Body temperature: Teething can raise body temperature slightly. But above 100.4 F is not one of the teething symptoms in babies, and you should consult a doctor.

Reasons for diarrhea during teething

Introduction of solid foods: Usually teething starts around 4-7 months of age. It is the time when babies get introduced to solid foods. This can cause a change in their bowel movement and leads to diarrhea. Infant’s digestive system is immature and it takes time for kids to adjust with new foods, which may cause a change in their stool and parents generally connect it with one of the baby teething symptoms. (What to feed when baby begins solids?)

Tend to put everything in mouth: The chances of bacteria entering the body are extremely high as during this phase kids tend to put everything in the mouth, which may also lead to diarrhea. Due to constant gum irritation, babies generally reach out for different objects, to put in the mouth. These objects could have germs or are not necessarily clean and this can be a cause of diarrhea during teething. It’s not one of the baby teething symptoms actually.

Immunity Fact: Babies immune system is much stronger immediately after birth than at the age of six months. Around this time the baby starts losing the antibodies he/she got at the time of birth and may experience unrelated ailments or infections which can cause diarrhea. This is the time when a baby’s underdeveloped immune system needs a boost up to fight against disease causing bacteria. (Immunity foods for babies during 6 months)

Tips to be followed during Diarrhea

Maintain hygiene: The most important thing is to maintain a hygienic surrounding when you notice some of the teething symptoms in babies. The process of teething causes gum irritation and in an attempt to soothe sore gums babies put things or a teething toy in their mouth. If these objects are not cleaned regularly, it can be an invitation for germs and microbes to enter their body which leads to many infections including diarrhea.

Rehydration: Rehydration is the process of restoring lost water or fluid to the body. The World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF recommended Oral Rehydration Salt (ORS) as essential for clinical treatment of acute diarrhea. ORS treats dehydration caused by severe diarrhea through the replacement of lost fluid, salt, sugar, potassium and other nutrients. Ask your doctor about what type and quantity of ORS to be used.

Diet: Your kid’s diet is the main concern you should take care of during teething and diarrhea. If your baby is on breastfeeding or formula, increase its frequency is necessary. At least half of the dietary energy comes from foods other than milk. If your baby is above 6 months, you can give mashed banana, yogurt, potato, carrots, moong dal/mung bean soup and rice water.  All these foods can help to aid diarrhea. (How to make mung bean soup?)

Developing immunity: To boost up your baby’s immunity to fight infections just stick to breastfeeding, nutrient rich foods, probiotics and follow their vaccination schedule.

When to consult a doctor?

Mild symptoms of diarrhea can be treated at home with these precautions. However, if your child develops any of the below mentioned symptoms, consult your paediatrician.

  • If diarrhea persists for more than a week.
  • Vomiting along with diarrhea.
  • Severe stomach pain.
  • Increase in baby’s body temperature more than 101 degree Fahrenheit.
  • Blood in stool.
  • If the baby is losing weight.
  • If there are symptoms of dehydration in a baby.

Foods to overcome Diarrhea

Besides keeping your baby hydrated, it is also important to take care of their diet. Offer small meals to your baby at regular intervals. Foods rich in carbohydrates help to maintain the energy level of the body during diarrhea. Potassium rich foods are also important, which may be lost in large quantities through diarrhea. Here is the list of foods that you can offer to your baby during diarrhea:

Breast milk (0+ month):

Breast milk passes antibodies from mother to the baby to fight against infections such as diarrhea. It is also a great source of probiotics (gut friendly bacteria) for babies, which contributes to the establishment of the infant’s gut microbiota. (How to heal the gut of the child?)

Banana (6 months+):

It is best to give during diarrhea as it helps to harden the stool. Banana is the rich source of potassium, which helps to balance electrolytes lost due to frequent loose motions. It is a rich source of iron and fiber which contributes to a healthy digestive tract. It is a superfood which can be used as a complete plant to treat digestion. (How to use banana stem in food everyday?)

Carrots (6 months+):

Carrots are rich in iron, calcium, vitamin A and fiber. It helps in adding bulk and binds the stool which helps in diarrhea. Go for steamed mashed or pureed carrots for your little one. (Prebiotics for kids to help with digestion?)

Nutmeg (6 months+):

Nutmeg or Jaiphal has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, which helps to reduce microbial infection and reduces the intestinal inflammation. It also has anti-secretory components which helps to reduce the loss of fluid from the body during diarrhea. You can make the powder by rubbing nutmeg on the stone grinder. Give your baby a pinch of this powder with some water. This is also great to treat cold and cough. (Foods and remedies to help with cold and flu)

Rice water (6 months+):

Rice water is starchy water left after rice is cooked. It is a great source of energy, as it contains carbohydrates. It also maintains the fluid level of the body and decreases the frequency of stool.

Moong dal (mung bean) (6 months+):

Mung bean (Moong dal) is an outstanding prebiotic, which helps to maintain gut health. Rich in both soluble and insoluble fiber, It helps in digestion and adds more bulk to stool. It is extremely high in Protein, which digests slowly and keeps the kids energetic.(Why to sprout beans for kids?)

Sabudana (sago) (7 months+):

Sabudana is a rich source of carbohydrates, protein, vitamin K, calcium and potassium. It helps to retain fluid in the intestine and to thicken loose motions, hence control the frequency of bowel movements.

Buttermilk (7 months+):

Buttermilk is rich in calcium, vitamin D, vitamin B12, protein, carbohydrates and low in fat. It has great probiotics properties that help to increase the production of good bacteria in the digestive tract, which improves kids gut health, boosts immunity and prevents acidity. It helps to ease the discomfort in the digestive tract. (Nutritious summer drinks for kids keep hydrated)

Boiled potato (8 months+):

Potatoes are easy to digest and best to give your baby during diarrhea as it is high in carbohydrate and provides adequate energy that is lost during loose motion.

Apple and Banana benefits for Kids

apple and banana benefits

There is a famous children’s rhyme- I like to eat eat eat Apple and Bananas…which too agrees to the power of these fruits. Eating an apple and banana benefits child’s health in many ways. Just one each of these fruits can meet over 50% Fibre and Vitamin C requirement for the day, solving for Digestion and Immunity.

Our body neither produces nor stores vitamin C. Hence it becomes imperative to consume it everyday. It is a powerful antioxidant which protects the body against free radical damage that can lead to serval diseases in the long run. Vitamin C is also important for the formation of collagen protein which is found in skin, bones and teeth. Deficiency in Vitamin C can lead to susceptibility to infections, aging, bleeding gums and slow healing.

WHATSAPP for concerns like Speech Delay, Low Weight, Frequent Illness, Hyperactivity, Low Concentration, Weak Eyesight, Improper Sleep, Pigmentation, Pores, Face Marks, Fine Lines , Lactation etc.

Benefits of eating apple daily:

Apples should be mashed or steamed or blended for consumption but never juiced. All the fibre of the fruit is strained out when it is juiced. The polyphenols present in the skin of the apple are also separated out while juicing. Polyphenol is an antioxidant which helps to fight diseases. In simple words, it will balance the negative impact of consuming other fast-foods. Several studies reveal the benefits of consuming 400mg of this compound to work its magic on making body healthy and disease free. Hence, always consume an apple with the skin. 1 Apple provides roughly 400mg of Polyphenol, which is enough for the day.

Finally, another important benefits of eating apple daily is that in addition to fibre and vitamin C, apple also has a compound Quercetin which favors Brain health and impacts better memory and cognitive ability in kids.

What are benefits of eating banana?

Banana is high in fiber and prebiotics, both of which support smooth digestion. It contains potassium which is an essential mineral required for heart health and is rich in pectin( a type of fiber) that helps in regulating blood sugar levels.

APPLE AND BANANA BENEFITS:

Both fruits are a rich source of natural fiber. The moment you remove the skin of the apple, you reduce the fiber by 50%. Kids needs 15-20g of fiber based on their age/ weight. One apple with skin can give roughly 5g of fiber. One banana has 3g of fiber. Kids nowadays consume 1/10th fiber of what was consumed centuries ago. Processed, easy-to-gulp food has taken priority. This has resulted in extreme digestion issues.

apple and banana benefits for kids

Mostly kids enjoy eating apple and banana for their snack. They are the easiest source of added fiber and Vitamin C along with varied nutrients in daily diet. In addition to fighting infection, Vitamin C also helps in absorbing Iron in the body. Iron is important for high energy levels as it helps in blood production in the body (haemoglobin).

These fruits also help in keeping kids full for a longer duration due to high fibre content. This way apple vs banana benefits with weight loss for kids who are over weight or obese by controlling the prevalent binge eating trend in kids nowadays.
