Popcorn or Makhana- the better snack for Kids

Giving healthy snacks to kids every time when they have cravings in between meals is the toughest job for every mother. By handing over a pack of chips, sugary cookies and cold drinks we miss the chance to feed them something healthy and nutritious. In this article we will discuss which is healthier of the two snacks: Popcorn or Makhana (lotus seeds) and will see who wins the race in being more nutritious.

Popcorn: What makes a movie perfect? The answer is popcorn. Whether it is in the theatre or at home, movies are incomplete without popcorn. They are considered as one of the healthy snacks for kids. It has ample dietary fiber and low calorie count. Popcorn is also a good source of polyphenols, an antioxidant that helps in better blood circulation and digestive health. And is considered to be a food that can aid in weight loss too. Although always remember that vending-machine popcorn is not just high in calories but also in sodium. Air-popped would be a good way to prepare popcorn.

Makhana (Lotus seeds): Makhana or lotus seeds are grown in Asian countries and considered as a power food. It is an excellent source of many important nutrients. Moreover, it is loaded with protein, fiber, calcium, magnesium, iron, phosphorus and carbohydrates. It also contains antioxidants like gallic acid, chlorogenic acid and epicatechin, which reduces inflammation, helps to neutralize harmful free radicals and prevent oxidative stress. To sum up, makahan and popcorn both are healthy snacks options. Its a kind of co win situation for you to offer these healthy snacks to your kids.

Makhana (Lotus Seeds) vs. Popcorn

Amongst many minerals and vitamins that contribute towards brain development and function, a few are Manganese, Vitamin B6 and B9. They are abundantly present in Makhana.

  • Just a cup of Makhana is enough to meet 50% of Manganese requirements for the day.
  • It is those rare snacks which are loaded with a good balance of B vitamins, 5 times that of popcorn.
  • Makhana has 1/4th of the calories of popcorn. This gap is huge in the limited amount of calories a child can be fed. Every calorie a child consumes should be loaded with nutrients and not be an empty calorie.
  • Not just Brain, Makhana also supports strong bone development of a growing child.

Hence we can say that if we have to choose between Popcorn or Makhana as a healthier snacks for kids, Makhana wins over many folds in nutrition. However, popcorn is not an unhealthy snack option, but Makhana is definitely more nutritious and healthier. So next time when you are watching a movie or otherwise, offer your kids roasted makhana. They will surely love this crunchy healthy snack.

Health benefits of Makhana:

Strengthen bones:

Calcium is crucial for bone development and strengthening, especially for kids in growing years to have strong bones for lifetime. In addition to this, Makhana being high in calcium helps kids in bone development and adults in bone strengthening.(Foods that help build strong bones?)

Moreover, the fiber in it moves slowly through your digestive tract to keep you feeling full for a long time. (Foods that can help with weight control?)

Good for skin

Makhana contains several amino acids, which help promote skin elasticity and skin health. Also the antioxidant properties in it help fight free radicals, thus they act as an anti-ageing agent. Since Makhana is high in a natural flavonoid called kaempferol, it helps to keep away the signs of ageing such as hair loss, graying of hairs and formation of wrinkles. So it is not only good for kids but for adults too. (Remedies and foods to avoid rashes in skin?)

To conclude we can say that Makhana and popcorn both are healthy but Makhana has more nutritional benefits than popcorn.

HEAT RASH PRICKLY HEAT: CAUSES AND REMEDIES

Our skin comes in direct contact with the outer world. It protects our body from inside by facing every weather condition. It plays a role of a preventive barrier against chemicals, infections, ultraviolet rays and helps in controlling body temperature through sweating.  Usually, kids spend more time outside. So, they are at more risk of having heat rashes. Summer is the season of skin rashes. As the name itself implies, heat rashes prickly heat are caused by excessive heat. It looks like small bumps surrounded by red skin and they have prickly sensation and itching too. Heat rashes appear when some of the sweat gets trapped under the skin and because of this, sweat can’t escape from the body.

The sweat producing gland is located in the middle layer of epidermis, which is the outer layer of skin. When these glands become clogged, they are not able to perform their functions and due to this rash appear on the affected area. Generally small babies are at higher risk of heat rash because they have smaller sweat glands which are not mature enough to maintain body temperature. When it’s hot and humid, kids engaged in excessive sports activities can also have heat rashes, because while playing kids sweat and the more you sweat the more chance of dust and dead skin could block your skin pores and cause rashes. It usually develops on the neck, armpit, elbow creases, buttocks and areas where skin rubs against clothing like chest and back.

CAUSES OF HEAT RASH:
  • Hot and humid weather

PREVENTION AND TREATMENT FOR HEAT RASH:

Health Benefits Of Panchamrit

panchamrit benefits

Let food be thy medicine and medicine thy food- Hippocrates

 Panchamrit

Panchamrit is a Sanskrit term made by combining two words- Panch (means five) and Amrit (means divine nectar of Gods, immortality). Moreover, Panchamrit benefits are many and it contains mainly these five ingredients -milk, curd, honey, mishri and ghee. In some regions, it is also known as Charanamrit (nectar from the feet of Gods).

Religious Significance:

In Hindu religion, it is considered very sacred and is used as an offering to God during pooja. And also used for Abhishek (religious bath of the divine). Finally, after the pooja, it is distributed as Prasad to the devotees. The usage of “Panchamrit” in Hindu rituals is considered as the oldest synbiotic food (a combination of both pre-biotic and pro-biotic) in the history of mankind. It is a concoction of five ingredients – Raw Cow’s Milk, Curd, Honey, Mishri (rock Sugar), and Ghee. And you can also add cardamom and basil to it.

According to Mahabharata, it was one of the valuable ingredients that emerged during the Samudra Manthan or Ksheera Sagar Manthan (churning the ocean of milk). Therefore, each one of the ingredients has a symbolic meaning to it. For example, milk symbolizes purity and piousness, honey stands for sweet speech and unity (as producing honey requires absolute dedication and cooperation), sugar represents sweetness and bliss, curd indicates prosperity and ghee represents strength and victory. To sum up, Panchamrit benefits our health in many ways.

Panchamrit BENEFITS FOR HEALTH:

  • Natural skin cleanser and helps to nourish skin cells and promotes natural glow
  • Enhances memory, grasping power, creative ability and brain development
  • Boosts health of mother and foetus during pregnancy
  • Keeps hairs healthy
  • Improves digestion
  • Strengthens bones
  • Builds immunity

Significance of each Ingredient:

Milk:

Raw cow’s milk carries super efficient antioxidants-Vitamin K and Beta Carotene which counter the free radicals (What are they?) in the body. Hence, it is the next best thing after mother’s milk. Moreover, Cow’s milk is also a rich source of calcium, proteins, vitamin B12.

Curd:

Curd is a provider of both bacteria (pro-biotic) as well as the food for the bacteria (pre-biotic). It has a cooling effect on body. Amino acids and enzymes in it help in digestion. It also provides protein and calcium.

Ghee:

Ghee carries antioxidants – vitamin K and beta-carotene which counter the free radicals in the body. It is the most treasured food which has healing properties.

Honey:

Honey carries the enzymes required to break down the food and aid absorption of minerals and vitamins in the body. It contains anti-oxidants, anti- bacterial and anti- microbial properties which helps in digestion, aids infections, clear complexion and makes skin smooth

Mishri (rock sugar):

It provides energy, helps in keeping the immunity high and aids digestion.  It also enhances other ingredients.

Basil and cardamom:

Basil is an anti-inflammatory food which aids in digestion by balancing the acid in the body. It is an elixir that helps detoxify the liver and a super source of iron too. Cardamom is quite an all rounder with powerful antioxidants.

However, there may be certain regional variations in ingredients. For example, most South Indians add raw bananas to the Panchamrit. Raw banana is a great source of good bacteria for the gut (pre-biotic).

In a nutshell, this simple sweet concoction is not just super tasty but also prepares our body to consume all sorts of fried food and sweets in large quantities. The free radical damage and disturbed digestion from eating and overeating heavy, oily and sweet food is countered by the intake of pre-biotic, pro-biotic, antioxidants and enzymes. It is a perfect example of how our traditional foods are backed by science to provide us maximum health benefits.

Happy Festivals and Cheers to Panchamrit!

5 AMAZING HOME REMEDIES FOR DRY SKIN ON FACE AND BODY OF KIDS

Dry skin is a common condition. There can be many reasons for dry skin on face and body of kids and it’s become important to take steps for skin care for children. At least one in 10 children have eczema, an ongoing skin problem that causes dry, itchy, red skin. Children with eczema have more sensitive skin than other people. Babies with severe eczema may also have food allergies. The most common being allergy from cow’s milk.

WHATSAPP for concerns like Speech Delay, Low Weight, Frequent Illness, Hyperactivity, Low Concentration, Weak Eyesight, Improper Sleep, Pigmentation, Pores, Face Marks, Fine Lines , Lactation etc.

Common reasons for Dry skin ON FACE AND BODY

Bathing too often and using soap can cause dry skin and if skin is already dry it makes it worse. This happens because soap removes the layer of skin’s natural oil and makes it difficult for skin to keep moisture in.

Climate is also responsible for having dry skin. It’s especially common in winters. When the humidity level drops outside, it affects skin as water in your skin evaporates quickly. This makes your skin feel dry and tight and makes it look cracking. Skin care for children becomes more important in winters.

Chlorine protects from harmful bacteria that can form in swimming pools. But spending too long in the swimming pool can be a cause for your kid’s dry skin. The chlorine in pool water can dry out a kid’s skin and make it feel tight and itchy because chlorine strips hairs and skin of the natural lubricant (sebum). Dry skin is less common in teenagers than in younger kids as the oil glands are more active in teenage years.

Common cure for dry skin ON FACE AND BODY

There are many home remedies for dry skin one can use. Most common being oil. However, a study in 2013 found that olive oil actually damaged the skin’s barrier, suggesting not all natural oils are suitable for use as moisturizers. Below are some home remedies for dry skin also some nuts and fruits which can be applied or consumed as a part of skin care for children

COCONUT OIL:
  • A study in 2019 explained that soothing properties of coconut oils have positive results on dermatitis and extremely dry skin. Coconut oil acts as a sealant as it traps water into the skin and keeps it moist. It also provides key essential fatty lipids. These lipids improve the function of the skin allowing it to feel hydrated as a result. (Is it beneficial to eat coconut oil too?). Other than applying the oil for dryness purposes, coconut also contains antibacterial properties, which help to heal a rash or allergy on the skin and considered as one of the best home remedies for dry skin on face and overall body. This can also be mixed with aloe vera and kept.

What are the causes for acne in kids and how to treat them.

Mostly kids and adults between ages 12 to 30 will have acne at some point. Acne in children often begins in puberty. But it can happen at any age. We have to understand first What is Acne and causes for acne?

WHATSAPP for concerns like Speech Delay, Low Weight, Frequent Illness, Hyperactivity, Low Concentration, Weak Eyesight, Improper Sleep, Pigmentation, Pores, Face Marks, Fine Lines , Lactation etc.

What is Acne and causes for acne?

  • Acne is a disorder of the hair follicles and sebaceous glands. It is a condition where hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. There are many causes for acne, it occurs when pores of your skin become blocked with oil, dead skin, or bacteria. It causes pimples, blackheads or whiteheads. acne can be found almost anywhere on your body. Acne in children mostly develop on face, back, neck, chest and shoulders. It is most common among teenagers, though it affects people of all ages. Researchers determine that heredity plays a role in the ability of follicles becoming acne resistant in teenage years. Risk of having acne is higher if parents had it in their teens.

Acne in Babies:

Newborn baby acne is a common condition which appears within the first few months of birth. Causes for acne in babies is the hormones that pass from the mother to the baby during pregnancy. Though new born baby acne is harmless and goes away on its own without any kind of treatment.

Acne in Teenagers:

More than 80% of teenagers have this common skin problem known as acne. It’s important to know ‘how our skin works’ to understand acne. The pores in your skin have oil glands. When a child hits puberty, there is an increase in sex hormones called androgens. These excess hormones cause oil glands to become overactive, enlarge and produce too much oil or sebum which blocks the pores or hair follicles with skin cells. Types of pimple in teens include: Whiteheads (small and under the skin), Blackheads (visible and black on surface), Pimples or cysts (seen clearly, painful, full of pus and cause scars if not treated carefully).

Also check, How does sugar cause acne?

Acne in Adults:

Adult acne is not much different from teen acne. It usually occurs after 25 years of age. There can be many causes for acne behind this sudden change including unhealthy diet- junk foods, deep fried eatables (how does sugar cause acne?), heavy make-up (which clogs the pores of the skin), hormonal imbalance (which enables production of excess sebum), release of stress hormones, bacterial infection and inflammation (what are some anti-inflammatory foods?). Applying a layer of cinnamon powder mixed with honey can help with treating the scars. Potato juice mixed with lemon juice also works similarly.

Studies suggest that following a healthy diet can help to cure acne in children. Foods rich in complex carbohydrates, zinc, vitamin A and E, omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants are effective in reducing pimples on children’s face.

FOODS FOR TREATING ACNE:

Complex Carbohydrates:
  •  Having whole grains and less of processed food and flours reduces risk of developing acne in children. Our modern diet is loaded with highly refined carbs like cookies, white bread, cake, pasta, pizza donuts, chips etc. (what happens when we eat such foods?) A quick look at the food label GI index can reduce chances of getting pimples on children’s face. High GI index indicates the food is processed. Rich sources of complex carbs are whole grains, legumes and whole fruits and vegetables.
Zinc:

Studies support the fact that eating foods rich in zinc may be useful in preventing and treating acne in children by decreasing the production of oil in the skin. Researchers believe that zinc shields the body cells from any external bacterial or viral attack on them. (what are other sources of good bacteria?)It is easy to include zinc as a part of a varied diet. Dairy products, nuts, pumpkin seeds lentils etc are good sources of zinc.

Vitamin A:
  •  Vitamin A acts as antioxidant and fights free radicals (what are they?). This helps to slow down cell ageing and keeps skin looking younger. Vitamin A plays an important role in helping new cells grow and stay healthy by healing acne and scars. Food rich in vitamin A which can help in preventing acne in children are yellow/ orange pigment plants such as carrots, sweet potatoes and green pigment plant food like spinach, broccoli (how to keep the vitamin A in food safe during cooking?)
Vitamin E:
  • This is also used as an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant (What are they?). As vitamin E oil is fat soluble vitamin, it allows for quick absorption into skin sebum to heal pimples on children’s faces and also reduce scars. It also helps the skin to lock moisture and promotes the production of collagen which strengthens the skin and may help with skin elasticity and hydration. All nuts and seeds, especially walnuts and sunflower seeds, corn, olives, avocado, soybean, fortified cereals are considered as foods high in vitamin E.
Omega-3 fatty acids:
  •  They can regulate the skin oil production and improve balanced hydration. A diet rich in omega-3s may help to prevent or reduce the severity of acne. It reduces inflammation on the skin too, which research states, may positively result in reduction of acne in children. Flax seed, chia seeds, walnuts, soybeans and fish like salmon, tuna, sardines are rich sources of this fat (Is fat good or bad for the body?).

Hormones Happy Fruits for Teens and Kids
